Gem Little (She/Her) is an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles whose work explores Black life in America through richly textured characters and environments.
Her short film Pens & Pencils received an NAACP Image Award nomination and an ABFF HBO Short Film Award, and is currently streaming on MAX. She also produced Malleable-a Rising Voices short film created under Lena Waithe's Hillman Grad Productions and 271 Films-which is now streaming on Amazon Prime and had a limited theatrical run, premiering ahead of Jordan Peele's NOPE. Additional producing credits include Remember, a WarnerMedia 150 pilot created by Bernard David Jones and executive produced by Hosea Chanchez.
Most recently, Gem directed and produced HOPELESS, a short film that screened at a range of festivals including the Rhode Island International Film Festival, Roxbury International Film Festival, Filmteenth, and the Baltimore International Black Film Festival, among others.
Gem is an alum of the American Film Institute's MFA program, where she sharpened her voice as a writer-director. While at AFI, she held internships with Charles D. King's MACRO and Ava DuVernay's ARRAY Filmworks. She has worked as a showrunner's assistant and most recently served as a writer's assistant on an HBO series.
In addition to her film credentials, Gem holds a Master's degree in Urban Planning-an influence that subtly informs her cinematic worlds, particularly her interest in place, class, and the unseen infrastructures shaping Black identity and belonging.
Her work has been recognized by Tribeca, ABFF, Urbanworld, BronzeLens, Toronto Black Film Festival, and many more.
