Elite season 8's murder lacks excitement. The characters are inconsistent and hard to root for. The series finale is fitting, but the story offers very few surprises along the way.
Elite follows a group of teenagers who study at Las Encinas, a super-exclusive school attended by those with a lot of money and power in society. One of the biggest aspects of the teen drama is the culture clash between those with scholarships and the ones who pay to go to the school. Elite season 8 once again explores that element, with students getting into situations that put them and their loved ones in danger. As with every season, Elite's final year once again revolves around a murder, but it feels like the same old in many ways.

The world’s TV scene faces challenges. But it still has opportunities. Marc Cistaré, a writer on “Locked Up,” has seized one, the strategic co-production alliance between TelevisaUnivision’s ViX streaming service and The Mediapro Studio.

A ViX Original, airing from March 10 on its platform as part of its premium offer, the show combines the craft learnt from two decades of writing Spanish prime-time series and the larger canvas, gender focus and artistic boldness of contemporary scripted.

Elite Season 6 looks to be a cut above the previous two seasons.
The series has struggled to keep its focus since many of the original cast members exited at the end of Elite Season 3.
However, the official trailer teases the aftermath of Sam's death, new beginnings, and Isadora's vengeance.
It looks like plenty of drama is on the menu, which could be what the show needs to steer it in the right direction.
“After Samuel’s death, Las Encinas faces a new school year trying to have a facelift by covering up disasters of the past,” reads the official synopsis.
“However, the conflict in its classrooms is systemic: racism, sexism, domestic abuse or Lgtbi-phobia are just a few of the difficult issues that will run through the hallways of the prestigious institution this season."

Now gorgeously restored in 4K from the original negative, and approved by Kwan himself, the film follows Cheung as iconic silent film star Ruan Lingyu, who committed suicide at the age of 24 in 1935 after a tumultuous private life that was frequent fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids—and began to mirror the melodramas that brought her fame. Today Focus Features opens Tár, the strikingly original return of Todd Field, in four locations in NY and LA. The film premiered at Venice winning star Cate Blanchett Best Actress as musician and conductor Lydia Tár. Early this week, it seemed to mesmerize a sold-out Alice Tully Hall at the New York Film Festival.
A 97 with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadline’s review here called Field’s first film since Little Children 16 years ago, a “daring and quite comprehensive immersion in a rarified world [that] features a lead performance the likes of which doesn’t come along very often.” Field wrote the part for Blanchett but at an NYFF Q&a he said he waited to send her the script until it was done and Focus chairman Peter Kujawski “asked me, ‘Who do you have in mind?’ I said I was still thinking about it. Because I was superstitious. That she would say no.

There’s a reason Carlota Pereda films Sara (Laura Galán) urinating through her clothes as an old friend (Irene Ferreiro’s Claudia), who’s drifted away towards the clique that bullies her, puts a bloody hand on the back window of a serial killer’s van while screaming for help. We need to understand her fear. Just because Sara is a teenager who’s been brutally victimized by an entire town of peers doesn’t mean she’s measuring the situation and deciding to let Claudia, Maca (Claudia Salas), and Roci (Camille Aguilar) die. She’s afraid for her own life. What if she tries to save them and the killer (Richard Holmes) watching from the driver’s seat simply throws her in the back? So she freezes. And, to her surprise, he helps her instead.
Therein lies the complexity of Piggy, a feature expansion of Pereda’s short film of the same name.

Elite Season 6 gets underway later this year on Netflix.
The streaming service revealed a new batch of episodes will arrive on Friday, November 18.
"If those who run the system do not actively take action to address these issues, it will have to be the students themselves who do so.”
While the cast exits haven't been seamless in the slightest, Elite Season 6 is poised to be completely different.
Samuel (played by Itzan Escamilla) was seemingly killed off at the conclusion of the previous season, but there were some rumors that he survived.

A premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Carlota Pereda’s Piggy takes a Carrie-esque look at fighting back at bullies with a horror twist. Set in rural Spain, the film follows Sara, a teenager who is subject to ruthlessly bullying. Her day finally comes when she witnesses her tormentors being kidnapped and the story gets darker from there, to say the least. Ahead of an October release, the first trailer has now arrived.
During the sweltering summertime of rural Spain, Sara carries an extra load of teenage agony due to the perpetual bullying from her peers. She’s also an outsider at home—her parents and little brother just don’t understand her—so, feelings internalized, she’s often found buried in her headphones, drowning out her surroundings. One day, Sara’s usual solo dip at the local pool is disrupted by the presence of a mysterious stranger...

Rest in peace, dear one -- if you're truly dead.
With Elite's sadistic track record of killing off main characters, I shouldn't have been surprised by this season's fatal blow, but it floored me, so much so that I'm not sure it was fatal, after all. Bodybag, or it didn't happen, right?
Spoilers ahead! If you haven't watched, continue at your peril
I have two theories: Samuel is dead, the cliffhanger cleverly employed to compel us to watch Season 6 (not that we wouldn't anyway) or Samuel is on the brink of death, will live, and will leave Las Encinas for good, Itzan Escamilla exiting the show.
The latter would be preferable.
Samuel has gone through far too much to die poolside of a head injury. However, that manner of death is eerily similar to that of his Season 1 lover Marina, so it could be a full-circle closure of his storyline.

Piggy Review — Piggy (2022) Film Review from the 44th Annual Sundance Film Festival, a movie directed by Carlota Martinez-Pereda, starring Laura Galán, Carmen Machi, Fernando Delgado-Hierro, Julián Valcárcel, José Pastor, Claudia Salas, Pilar Castro, Camille Aguilar, and Richard Holmes. If vacationing teenaged girls were the only bullies targeting overweight Sara (Laura Galán), the daughter [...]

In Carlota Pereda’s staggering debut feature, Piggy, there are horrors aplenty as a serial killer targets a small town in Spain. But the true terror here comes from the hell that is being a teenage girl, especially one who is plus size, which is demonstrated through the constant torment that Sara (Laura Galán) faces in her day-to-day life. A group of popular teens, led by the brazenly bitchy Maca (Claudia Salas), make it a point to go out of their way to cut Sara down any way they can, in both real life and on social media, where they constantly ridicule Sara and her unconventional body size through their use of the nickname “Piggy.” On one sweltering summer day in particular, Sara heads off to a swimming pool looking for some respite from the heat, but when she arrives, Maca and her friends decide to prank the poor girl...

In most films, the sight of a slaughtered human body — weighed down at the bottom of a public swimming pool with blood gushing from its wounds — would be the most stomach-churning thing in any given scene. “Piggy,” however, is not most films. In Spanish writer-director Carlota Pereda’s striking psychological slasher, the image passes without comment in the background, so incidental that we briefly wonder if our eyes have deceived us. For we’ve already been rattled by the real violence of the scene: plus-size teenager Sara (Laura Galán) being gleefully and relentlessly taunted by svelte mean-girl bullies, who then attempt drowning her with a pool net for extra laughs. Small wonder Sara doesn’t notice the dead man in the water, or that we barely register it. Pereda’s viciously impressive debut uses standard genre shocks almost as macguffins; it’s the all-too-recognizable horror of brutalized adolescence that really makes us wince.

Netflix is doubling down on Elite, which is set to become one of the streamer's longest-running series.
On Thursday, the service ordered Elite Season 6, well ahead of the still unscheduled Elite Season 5 premiere.
What's more, we're getting three holiday-themed episodes of the Spanish teen drama with new episodes of Elite: Short Stories set to air in December.
The specials are as follows:
- Phillipe, Caye, & Felipe (December 15)
- Samuel & Omar (December 20)
- Patrick (December 23)
The renewal was a no-brainer. Elite has solidified itself as one of the streamer's most popular dramas.
Also helping matters is that the cast rotates in and out, meaning that unlike many other shows, the budget will not be soaring with every season.
Elite follows the students of a private secondary school in Spain that always seems to attract scandal.
Elite Season 4 waved goodbye to another two original stars in Miguel Bernardeau (Guzman) and Aron Piper...

Paris-based Charades Films has boarded Carlota Pereda’s rural thriller “Piggy” (“Cerdita”), one of the most awaited feature debuts of the year from Spain.
Written and directed by Pereda, “Piggy” is produced by Morena Films and France’s Backup Media, the outfit behind “Still Alice,” “Submergence” and Ari Folman’s Cannes entry “Where Is Anne Frank.” Charades will handle world sales rights on “Piggy,” while Filmax, a frequent backer of first time directors, will distribute the film in Spain.
Starring Laura Galán, Richard Holmes and Carmen Machi, “Piggy” expands on Pereda’s short of the same title which marked her breakthrough as a film director and won 90 awards, including the Spanish Academy Goya Award for best short film in 2019, the José María Forqué Award for best fiction short and a Slamdance Russo Brothers Fellowship.
Though “Piggy” represents her feature debut, Pereda has an extensive C.V. as a director and writer.

Netflix has set June 18 for the worldwide release of Season 4 of its popular Spanish YA drama series Elite.
The series received an early fourth season renewal two months before Season 3 premiered, and it was renewed for Season 5 in February, ahead of the Season 4 launch. Created and written by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, Elite is one of the streamer’s best performing Spanish originals, with Netflix noting in 2019 that it had been seen by more than 20 million households.
Season 4 picks up with a new school year at Las Encinas, as well as a new director (Diego Martin): one of the most powerful businessmen in Europe, ready to bring the Las Encinas institution, which, according to him, has been running amok in the past few years, back on track. He brings his three children with him: three teenagers too used to always get their own way,...

Netflix has (finally!) announced when Elite fans can check back into Las Encinas.
The long-delayed fourth season of the private-school drama will land on the streaming service Friday, June 18.
An episode order has not been revealed, but it is expected to be in line with the previous three seasons, which spanned eight episodes apiece.
The premiere date means fans will have been waiting 15 months between seasons, but the long delay is due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Elite Season 4 production was forced to shut down, but it resumed a few months ago, and with work on the season has now been completed, production on Elite Season 5 has already commenced.
Yes, fans have a lot of Elite to look forward to, but this won't be the same Elite we know and love.

Netflix Spain’s popular YA series “Elite” season four will premiere on June 18 worldwide. Among the service’s most popular programs in any language, “Elite” stands among the few series, international or American, to surpass the three-season mark at the platform.
The U.S streaming giant first announced season four just about two months after season three launched on the streamer and was seen by more 20 million households. The cast, including Miguel Bernardeau and Claudia Salas, announced the pickup via a video from their homes in quarantine. In late February of this year, Season Five was commissioned by Netflix, and two new key castings announced in Valentina Zenere and André Lamoglia.
The two newcomers will join the now superstar cast including series regulars Miguel Bernardeau, Claudia Salas, Georgina Amoros, Itzan Escamilla and Omar Ayuso, who joined the show in season three.

The trials and tribulations of the students at Las Encinas will continue to be charted at Netflix.
The streamer on Thursday officially ordered a fifth season of the Spanish-language drama Elite, well in advance of its Season 4 premiere.
Netflix made the announcement on Twitter, but Deadline revealed that the fifth season will also bring another two new cast members into the fold in Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas), but no character details were revealed.
Elite typically likes to keep viewers in suspense when new additions are announced due to the nature of the series.
Each season follows a new mystery in a similar vein to Big Little Lies, with the characters being quizzed by the police about the events.
Elite was renewed for Season 4 in May last year, but production was scuppered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the series finishing filming much later than originally planned.

Spanish drama Elite has been renewed for a fifth season at Netflix, and the YA boarding school series has added Argentinan actress Valentina Zenere (Soy Luna) and Brazilan actor André Lamoglia (Juacas) to its cast.
The renewal comes before Season 4 has even premiered on Netflix. Elite, which was created and written by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, is one of the streamer’s best performing Spanish originals, with Netflix noting in 2019 that it had been seen by more than 20 million households.
Described as “effervescent, uninhibited and sensual,” the soapy teen series follows the intrigue at Las Encinas, an exclusive boarding school in Spain. It is made by Zeta Audiovisual, which has offices in Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville.
Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau, Arón Piper, Omar Ayuso, Claudia Salas and Georgina Amorós will appear in Season 4, while new cast includes Andrés Velencoso, Manu Rios, Carla Díaz, Martina Cariddi, Pol Granch, and Diego Martín.

Netflix's Elite has been renewed for season four, so more drama awaits! On May 22, costars Itzan Escamilla, Claudia Salas, Georgina Amorós, Miguel Bernardeau, Arón Piper, and Omar Ayuso confirmed the news in a video, saying that they've already received the script. "You better be prepared, because it's intense," Piper says. Amorós also teased a powerful season, saying, "I wish I could see your faces when you watch it because you're going to flip out. There are many new things going on you could never think of."

But there are greater depths and ambition to the Netflix Spanish high-school hit, if the first two episodes of Season 2 and a Madrid press conference involving cast and creators are anything to go by.
First details of “Elite” Season 2 come as the series has been renewed for Season 3, Diego Avalos, director of originals in Spain, announced at the Thursday presentation.
Season 2 follows a tried and tested flash forward format. In the first season of “Elite” someone is murdered. In Season 2, someone goes missing. As the hours tick by – 36 at least by the end of Ep. 2, – hope of finding them alive plunges dramatically.
That set-up gives the suspense thrust to “Elite” Season 2, the Spanish teen crime/social thriller which, produced once more by Zeta Audiovisual, bows on Netflix worldwide on Sept.
