Julián Ortega, who appeared in Netflix’s hit Spanish series “Elite,” died Aug. 25 after going into cardiac arrest while visiting Zahora Beach in Barbate, Spain, according to local outlets. He was 41.

Spain’s Union de Actores y Actrices posted an obituary for Ortega on Monday.

While initial reports suggested the Spanish actor had drowned, authorities later said he went into cardiac arrest while on the shore. After paramedics attempted to revive him for several minutes, Ortega was pronounced dead on the scene.

Ortega played the manager of “La Cabana” restaurant in the Spanish drama series “Elite,” appearing in several episodes during the show’s first season. “Elite” would run for eight seasons from 2018-2024, with its last episode airing on July 26.

Elite season 8's murder lacks excitement. The characters are inconsistent and hard to root for. The series finale is fitting, but the story offers very few surprises along the way.

Elite follows a group of teenagers who study at Las Encinas, a super-exclusive school attended by those with a lot of money and power in society. One of the biggest aspects of the teen drama is the culture clash between those with scholarships and the ones who pay to go to the school. Elite season 8 once again explores that element, with students getting into situations that put them and their loved ones in danger. As with every season, Elite's final year once again revolves around a murder, but it feels like the same old in many ways.

Today Focus Features opens Tár, the strikingly original return of Todd Field, in four locations in NY and LA. There’s a reason Carlota Pereda films Sara (Laura Galán) urinating through her clothes as an old friend (Irene Ferreiro’s Claudia), who’s drifted away towards the clique that bullies her, puts a bloody hand on the back window of a serial killer’s van while screaming for help. We need to understand her fear. Just because Sara is a teenager who’s been brutally victimized by an entire town of peers doesn’t mean she’s measuring the situation and deciding to let Claudia, Maca (Claudia Salas), and Roci (Camille Aguilar) die. She’s afraid for her own life. What if she tries to save them and the killer (Richard Holmes) watching from the driver’s seat simply throws her in the back? So she freezes. And, to her surprise, he helps her instead.

Therein lies the complexity of Piggy, a feature expansion of Pereda’s short film of the same name.

Elite Season 6 gets underway later this year on Netflix.

The streaming service revealed a new batch of episodes will arrive on Friday, November 18.

While the cast exits haven't been seamless in the slightest, Elite Season 6 is poised to be completely different.

Samuel (played by Itzan Escamilla) was seemingly killed off at the conclusion of the previous season, but there were some rumors that he survived.

Elite is headed back to school — sans several cast members! — later this fall, when Season 6 premieres on Friday, Nov. 18, Netflix announced on Monday via the above video.

A premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Carlota Pereda’s Piggy takes a Carrie-esque look at fighting back at bullies with a horror twist. After catching a lot of positive attention from its screening at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the Spanish-language horror film Piggy will be screening at Fantastic Fest this weekend… and on October 7th, the movie will be receiving a nationwide release at Alamo Drafthouse theatres! Rest in peace, dear one -- if you're truly dead. 

With Elite's sadistic track record of killing off main characters, I shouldn't have been surprised by this season's fatal blow, but it floored me, so much so that I'm not sure it was fatal, after all. Bodybag, or it didn't happen, right?

Spoilers ahead! If you haven't watched, continue at your peril

I have two theories: Samuel is dead, the cliffhanger cleverly employed to compel us to watch Season 6 (not that we wouldn't anyway) or Samuel is on the brink of death, will live, and will leave Las Encinas for good, Itzan Escamilla exiting the show. 

The latter would be preferable.

Samuel has gone through far too much to die poolside of a head injury. However, that manner of death is eerily similar to that of his Season 1 lover Marina, so it could be a full-circle closure of his storyline.

Season 5 of the popular Spanish teen drama “Élite” will debut April 8, Netflix announced Monday.

Set in the private, elite secondary school Las Encinas, “Élite” follows an ensemble cast of students that constantly find themselves involved with various murder and police investigations. Changes are on the horizon for Netflix's hit Spanish drama Elite.

The streaming service on Monday revealed Elite Season 5 will launch on April 8.

This will be the first Elite content since December's Short Stories.

A teaser was also unveiled that shows the characters dancing the night away, and their reactions certainly suggest something is afoot.

Elite Season 4 waved goodbye to Miguel Bernardeau (Guzman) and Aron Piper (Ander), leaving Itzan Escamilla (Samuel) and Omar Ayuso (Omar) as the only original cast members remaining.

Claudia Salas (Rebe) and Georgina Amoros (Caye), who have been on the show since its second season, will be back.

Elite Season 4's new cast members Carla Diaz (Ari), Martina Cariddi (Mencia), Manu Rios (Patrick) Pol Granch (Phillipe), and Diego Martin (Benjamin) will all be back for Elite Season 5.

Valentina Zenere and Andre Lamoglia are set to play new cast members on Season 5, and they're both present in the new teaser.

In Carlota Pereda’s staggering debut feature, Piggy, there are horrors aplenty as a serial killer targets a small town in Spain. But the true terror here comes from the hell that is being a teenage girl, especially one who is plus size, which is demonstrated through the constant torment that Sara (Laura Galán) faces in her day-to-day life. A group of popular teens, led by the brazenly bitchy Maca (Claudia Salas), make it a point to go out of their way to cut Sara down any way they can, in both real life and on social media, where they constantly ridicule Sara and her unconventional body size through their use of the nickname “Piggy.” On one sweltering summer day in particular, Sara heads off to a swimming pool looking for some respite from the heat, but when she arrives, Maca and her friends decide to prank the poor girl...

In most films, the sight of a slaughtered human body — weighed down at the bottom of a public swimming pool with blood gushing from its wounds — would be the most stomach-churning thing in any given scene. “Piggy,” however, is not most films. In Spanish writer-director Carlota Pereda’s striking psychological slasher, the image passes without comment in the background, so incidental that we briefly wonder if our eyes have deceived us. For we’ve already been rattled by the real violence of the scene: plus-size teenager Sara (Laura Galán) being gleefully and relentlessly taunted by svelte mean-girl bullies, who then attempt drowning her with a pool net for extra laughs. Small wonder Sara doesn’t notice the dead man in the water, or that we barely register it. Pereda’s viciously impressive debut uses standard genre shocks almost as macguffins; it’s the all-too-recognizable horror of brutalized adolescence that really makes us wince.

Netflix is doubling down on Elite, which is set to become one of the streamer's longest-running series.

On Thursday, the service ordered Elite Season 6, well ahead of the still unscheduled Elite Season 5 premiere.

What's more, we're getting three holiday-themed episodes of the Spanish teen drama with new episodes of Elite: Short Stories set to air in December.

The specials are as follows:

- Samuel & Omar (December 20)

- Patrick (December 23)

The renewal was a no-brainer. Elite has solidified itself as one of the streamer's most popular dramas.

Also helping matters is that the cast rotates in and out, meaning that unlike many other shows, the budget will not be soaring with every season.

Paris-based Charades Films has boarded Carlota Pereda’s rural thriller “Piggy” (“Cerdita”), one of the most awaited feature debuts of the year from Spain.

Written and directed by Pereda, “Piggy” is produced by Morena Films and France’s Backup Media, the outfit behind “Still Alice,” “Submergence” and Ari Folman’s Cannes entry “Where Is Anne Frank.” Charades will handle world sales rights on “Piggy,” while Filmax, a frequent backer of first time directors, will distribute the film in Spain.

Starring Laura Galán, Richard Holmes and Carmen Machi, “Piggy” expands on Pereda’s short of the same title which marked her breakthrough as a film director and won 90 awards, including the Spanish Academy Goya Award for best short film in 2019, the José María Forqué Award for best fiction short and a Slamdance Russo Brothers Fellowship.

Though “Piggy” represents her feature debut, Pereda has an extensive C.V. as a director and writer.

Netflix Spain’s popular YA series “Elite” season four will premiere on June 18 worldwide. Among the service’s most popular programs in any language, “Elite” stands among the few series, international or American, to surpass the three-season mark at the platform.

The U.S streaming giant first announced season four just about two months after season three launched on the streamer and was seen by more 20 million households. The cast, including Miguel Bernardeau and Claudia Salas, announced the pickup via a video from their homes in quarantine. The streamer on Thursday officially ordered a fifth season of the Spanish-language drama Elite, well in advance of its Season 4 premiere.

Netflix made the announcement on Twitter, but Deadline revealed that the fifth season will also bring another two new cast members into the fold in Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas), but no character details were revealed.

Elite typically likes to keep viewers in suspense when new additions are announced due to the nature of the series.

Each season follows a new mystery in a similar vein to Big Little Lies, with the characters being quizzed by the police about the events.

Elite was renewed for Season 4 in May last year, but production was scuppered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the series finishing filming much later than originally planned.

Just because Elite is returning for Season 4, don't expect every cast member to return. 

Netflix on Monday revealed the official cast for the fourth season of the Spanish drama series. 

Andrés Velencoso, Manu Rios (El Chiringuito de Pepe), Carla Díaz (El Príncipe), Martina Cariddi (Mientras dure la guerra), Pol Granch and Diego Martín will be part of the universe of Las Encinas, the streamer has announced.

Their characters will cross paths with Guzmán (Miguel Bernardeau), Samuel (Itzan Escamilla), Ander (Arón Piper), Omar (Omar Ayuso), Rebeca (Claudia Salas), and Cayetana (Georgina Amorós).

The streamer has renewed its Spanish-language teen drama Elite for Season 4.

Set at an upper-class secondary school, Elite follows the relationships between three working-class scholarship students and their wealthy classmates.

The recent Season 3 finale found all of the characters seemingly moving on after the murder of Polo.

Six cast members revealed the renewal in a Twitter video, which was filmed virtually from each of the stars’ homes.

“I wish I could see your faces when you watch it, because you’re going to flip out,” Georgina Amorós, who plays Cayetana, tells fans of the fourth season.

“There are many new things going on you could never think of.”

Itzan Escamilla (Samuel), Miguel Bernardeau (Guzman), Aron Piper (Ander), Claudia Salas (Rebe), and Omar Ayuso (Omar) were also a part of the video, confirming they will all be back.

“Elite” will be coming back for another season of drama in a fancy Spanish high school.

Netflix has picked up the series for season 4 around two months after season 3 launched on the streamer. The cast, including Miguel Bernardeau and Claudia Salas, announced the pickup via a video from their homes in quarantine. Precisely when season 4 will be available is yet to be announced, especially given the current uncertainty of the coronavirus production shutdown.

“I wanted to tell you that we have got the scripts of season 4 and they look so good,” says Bernardeau in the video.
