Danny Robins on Uncanny: “I never really asked, do ghosts exist. The question is, what are ghosts?”
Image
It might sound strange but the concept of hauntings – ghosts, poltergeists, strange phenomena – are something of a comfort to Danny Robins, the British writer, broadcaster and journalist behind the highly successful podcasts Haunted, The Battersea Poltergeist, The Witch Farm and Uncanny, the latter of which is now also a three part show which aired on BBC 2, now available on BBC iPlayer. Created during the pandemic, Robins’ foray into supernatural podcasting felt, well, natural.

“Battersea Poltergeist was the first time where I just felt like I was really myself on tape,” he tells Den of Geek. “I just felt it was like a deliciously refreshing invigorating thing to just completely be yourself, to make something that you really desperately care about.”

If that level of care and enthusiasm is apparent from the podcasts (it is), then it’s even more so in the show, where Robins investigates a story over the course of an hour,...

BBC's Uncanny Is the Next Big Ghost Hunting Show
Image
Most supernatural investigative shows have bad reputations as they've been considered fake, with its "mediums" being anything but. Uncanny was a supernatural series that started as a compelling podcast and gained a huge following. The Uncanny TV show is redefining the genre in style by offering new takes on classic schools of thought to offer something fresh for audiences.

It's Halloween, and the paranormal investigation shows are sure to be getting a few more viewers than normal. There are some classics in the genre, however, there have always been accusations that what these shows depict is false and superficial. The gap between believers and skeptics appears to be getting bigger every day as the argument rages on between the two sides. Sometimes, no amount of proof is enough to convince someone that ghosts exist unless they experience it for themselves and have absolutely no explanation for what happened.

However, the...

The Conjuring: Questionable Authenticity & Inaccurate History Spooks a Paranormal Expert
Image
Despite being inspired by actual paranormal events, The Conjuring takes artistic liberties in its portrayal of the Warrens and their investigations, according to paranormal expert Danny Robins. Robins humorously points out that the Warrens in the film quickly abandon their skepticism and jump to conclusions about demonic presence based on minimal evidence. The Conjuring universe as a whole adapts truth to fit its cinematic mold, deviating from real-life stories and prioritizing thrills over authenticity, as seen in films like the Annabelle trilogy and The Nun 2.

If there's one thing the modern cinematic landscape has embraced, it's shared universes – and among the most infamous is the haunting realm of The Conjuring. Yet, for all its chills and screams, how true does the famed series remain to its paranormal roots? Danny Robins, a paranormal expert, recently voiced his candid observations on the matter, particularly highlighting the theatrical departures of Ed and Lorraine Warren from their real-life counterparts.

“Bad Smell, Gotta Be Demons”: The Conjuring’s Warren Couple Mocked By Paranormal Expert
Image
Robins criticizes The Conjuring for how quickly the Warrens jump to the conclusion that a house is haunted by demons, despite other possible explanations. Other entries in The Conjuring Universe also lack realism to their paranormal events, deviating from real-life events to fit into a larger cinematic universe while sacrificing accuracy. Despite its lack of realism, The Conjuring is still highly regarded as one of the scariest demonic films of all time, and even Robins enjoys it.

Paranormal expert Danny Robins breaks down the unrealistic way in which the Warren hunt for demons in The Conjuring. Based on the real-life case of the Perron haunting in Rhode Island, the movie follows couple Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate the family's home. The movie is best known for starting a shared universe of horror films, some of which are entirely fictionalized while others are loosely based on real events.

Can the Uncanny TV Series Prove That Ghosts Are Real?
Image
When it comes to ghosts, are you a believer, a skeptic, or a ‘never really think about it’? If the latter is true Uncanny might not be on your radar but now the paranormal podcast, hosted by Danny Robins, has become a BBC Two TV show it’s definitely worth a look. Robins is a writer, comedian, broadcaster and journalist, who, as well as Uncanny, made the podcast The Witch Farm and wrote the acclaimed play 2:22 A Ghost Story.

Betteridge’s law that “Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no,” does, unfortunately, apply here, however even though, no, of course the show doesn’t prove anything, it delves into multiple theories, and comes up with some fairly convincing arguments should you be inclined to believe. And if not? Well it’s still a rollercoaster of storytelling.

The format of the show is similar to the podcast.

‘I had people stalking me – it was unbearable’: Cheryl on her ‘perfect storm’ of fame, Sarah Harding, and her West End debut
Image
Cheryl is still famous enough not to need a surname. On the poster for 2:22 A Ghost Story, the spooky hit play in which the singer formerly known as Tweedy, Cole and Fernandez-Versini is about to make her West End debut, she is billed simply and definitively as “Cheryl”. The 39-year-old has been using the mononym for so long now – since her 2012 solo hit “Call My Name” – that she didn’t even think about it until she saw her name on the Lyric Theatre’s marquee. “I was like, I guess that’s what it is then,” she says in the warm Geordie accent familiar from her judge’s critiques on The X Factor.

She has maintained a low profile in recent years. In the late Noughties, when she juggled The X Factor with a hugely successful music career – first as a member of Girls Aloud and then as a...
