Set in the bustling streets of 9th-century Baghdad, Assassin’s Creed Mirage had fans buzzing with its increased focus on stealth and parkour-based gameplay, marking a return to roots for the franchise. However, what many may not know is that Mirage was never originally intended as the full game it became.

In fact, the title was supposed to be a simple Dlc expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. In an interview, Creative Director Stéphane Boudon shared some insights into how a single PowerPoint slide turned into a standalone title. It brought the franchise back to its roots and gave long-time fans a nostalgic throwback of what made them fall in love with the franchise in the first place.

It’s tough to believe that Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed (AC) franchise has been taking us on adventures around the globe for 17 years now, starting with the series’ massive debut in 2007. Although a brand-new Assassin’s Creed is coming soon, the past few years haven’t been the best for the franchise.
One of the reasons behind Assassin’s Creed’s decline in the last couple of years has been Ubisoft’s constantly changing formula for the franchise. After the success of Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, players expected AC Mirage to follow the same route. However, the company’s new philosophy for AC Mirage’s game design frustrated many. Now, it seems like AC Mirage’s most controversial changes might plague the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game.

Basim Ibn Ishaq's journey will continue to be a major focus in future Assassin's Creed games, tying in with both Mirage and Valhalla. Mirage offers a standalone experience but hints at a possible extension of Basim's story, delving deeper into his role as an assassin. Basim's complex character and connections to Isu beings like Loki suggest a deeper, more villainous side that will unfold in future games.
It's clear to those who have played 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla and 2023's Assassin's Creed Mirage that Basim Ibn Ishaq will play a major role in the series going forward. Basim was introduced as a master assassin as part of the Hidden Ones - the group that would go on to become the Assassin's Order - in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, meeting Eivor's Viking clan and offering to help them expand their operations in Norway and England. The series then went back...

Assassin's Creed Mirage followed Basim Ibn Ishaq's origin story in a stealth-focused adventure set in Baghdad in 861 Ad. Creative director Stephane Boudon confirmed no Dlc planned for Mirage, but ideas for future Basim stories exist. Ubisoft hints at Basim's future appearances in upcoming Assassin's Creed projects but doesn't indicate whether these will be sequels to Mirage or further supporting roles like Valhalla.
Following Assassin's Creed Mirage, players could be seeing more of Basim Ibn Ishaq. After being introduced as a master assassin in a supporting role in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the series went back to Baghdad in the year 861 and depicted his origin story through a smaller, more stealth-focused title.
In an Ama (ask me anything) session on the official r/assassinscreed subreddit, Assassin's Creed Mirage's creative director Stephane Boudon, and art director Jean-Luc Sala answered questions about the game and where Basim's journey could go next. When asked about...

When the original Assassin’s Creed first hit store shelves in 2007, it was unlike anything else you could play on consoles that holiday season. Sixteen years later, we take that game’s winning combination of stealth gameplay, melee combat, parkour traversal, and open-world historical setting—all somehow also wrapped up in a compelling sci-fi thriller—for granted. But that’s because so much of the open-world formula the original title helped pioneer has become the standard language of modern gaming.
It’s why, in recent years, Assassin’s Creed publisher Ubisoft worked to freshen things up with a trilogy of games that emphasized loot-driven RPG mechanics over the original’s more linear, stealth-focused approach. But while those three installments—Origins, Odyssey, and most recently, Valhalla—were undeniable success stories for the franchise, Ubisoft is now going...

Assassin's Creed may have established itself in recent years as an enormous open-world franchise, but the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage looks like it may not fit in exactly the same mold. The first of several upcoming Assassin's Creed games and the only one to have yet received gameplay and story showcases, Mirage takes the franchise back to the Middle East in the shoes of the new protagonist, Basim Ibn Ishaq. The setting of the game looks to be as dynamic and detailed as ever, but it may not offer the same scope and explorative freedom fans have more recently come to expect from AC.

Speculation about Assassin’s Creed Mirage has focused on which features it will bring back to the franchise - and Ubisoft have just confirmed one of the most important ones. The press surrounding the upcoming title has emphasized how the game will be a much-desired return to the series' roots. Like Assassin’s Creed 1, Mirage will bring players to the Middle East and focus more on narrative than exploration, diverting from the formulaic newer Assassin's Creeds.
But what may be of more importance to fans is how Assassin's Creed Mirage manages gameplay. Since Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft has drifted away from designing games that emulate the movements and processes of an assassin. At first, Assassin's Creed Syndicate offered protagonists Jacob and Evie Frye as gangster alternatives to standard Brotherhood members. Since then, the series' RPG entries have given their protagonists god-like strengths, making the point of hiding or cunning more and more moot.
