The past met the future as John Cena challenged Austin Theory for Cena’s signature title, the United States Championship. It was the youngster who defeated his childhood idol to kick off WrestleMania 39. Cena toyed with Theory to start, but it only enraged the champion who responded by biting the 16-time World Champion’s ear. After an impressive few minutes from Theory, Cena locked in an Stf submission, but Theory again used his teeth to break the hold. So here’s the problem with writing a list-based article based on the bloodiest pro wrestling matches you can find that have been on the telly: there are, at last count, Seven And A Half Billion Of Them. And every one of them is supposedly bloodier than the last.
Us pro wrestling fans – the proper, hardcore nerdy types who remember the dates and runtimes of individual matches in Japan seventeen years ago – are incredibly precious about blood. It’s one of the signifiers that differentiates a casual fan from a real fan, after all: we know that red means green, and what a crimson mask should really look like. We understand the difference between hardway and a blade job (in fact, we call it ‘gigging’ like we read that they do in the business, just to make sure everyone knows we’re smart to it). We have our favourite bloody matches,...

On Total Divas Sunday night, viewers watched as Jimmy Uso exchanged vows with Naomi Knight. Unlike typical WWE weddings, no one objected and interrupted, no one smashed someone with cake or a steel chair… and stage names were not used. It was Jonathan Fatu marrying Trinity McCray.
Recently, WWE has seemingly had an unprecedented number of real-life weddings concurrently incorporated into the company’s storylines – all through Total Divas. Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella tied the knot the week after WrestleMania and were immediately thrust into the spotlight on Raw upon returning from their honeymoon. And Tyson Kidd and Natalya’s marriage was woven into WWE television, with Nattie breaking away from Great Khali to partner with her husband as he returned from injury.
While reality TV has increased the profile of these married couples, WWE has certainly incorporated real-life marriages into storylines before – to varying degrees of success.

The use of blood in pro wrestling has been a part of the business for many years. While it’s hard to track down when it first started being used in matches or who was the first to do it, the fact is that it’s been a tool to tell stories within a match for several decades now.
In today’s WWE, you won’t see matches with blood. A guy may get a cut above an eye because of a punch or going into some object, but there’s no more intentional blood. The PG era restarted again in 2008, so there won’t be anything on here that came after that. From the mid 90s until 2008 there were plenty of bloody moments, though.
A popular term that announcers would use to talk about blood in match is “crimson mask.
