By day, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins wears out shoe leather at the White House, trying to get the latest details on any number of eyebrow-raising policies coming out of the Trump administration. By night, she holds forth from a shiny Washington studio, far from the fray.
CNN hopes to inject a little of the reporter’s daytime routine into her nighttime one.
Collins is expected to leave her studio perch and host her 9 p.m. program, “The Source,” from the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s Washington, D.C., newsroom, a move that could take place as soon as Tuesday evening. The hope is that the change in setting will give viewers a more kinetic presentation that reminds them of Collins’ unique place at the network — it is rare for someone assigned to a busy news beat, in this case that of chief White House correspondent, to also have responsibility...

Just when it seemed like the “Morgan Wallen left 15 seconds early” story would be the weirdest, refuse-to-die Saturday Night Live controversy of the year, “Aimee Lou Wood’s teeth” sauntered up to the bar and said, “Hold my beer.”
Getting you up to speed in case you missed it: SNL poked fun at the extended Trump family in an HBO parody called The White Potus. Most of the gags were aimed at political figures, but the character of Chelsea, played by Aimee Lou Wood, was turned into a dental joke. Sarah Sherman popped in some enormous fake chompers to imitate Wood’s toothy smile, a bit that inspired Wood to call out SNL on social media for “mean” humor. Within hours, Wood reported that a) she’d received a lot of online support and b) “I’ve received apologies from SNL.”

Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show on Monday, after taking a brief respite from his grueling one-day-a-week schedule. Stewart began his monologue by roasting Donald Trump for recently bragging that he “won” a Trump International golf tournament, which the host then likened to the “Make-a-Wish Batman kid” celebrating his defeat of the Joker.
But the bulk of the segment was dedicated to the off-the-rails incompetence of the Democratic Party, best typified by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s unwillingness to battle the Trump agenda. Not to mention the various social media gimmicks that Democratic lawmakers have been focusing on, which arguably wildly undercut the severity of the current political moment.
In addition to mocking a cringey video game-themed TikTok post, Stewart also called attention to one Democratic congresswoman who shared a “Get Ready With Me” video in which she unpacked America’s healthcare crisis while applying mascara in the front seat of a car.

Saturday Night Live has been pushing boundaries for nearly five decades, delivering sharp, outrageous, and sometimes questionable humor that leaves audiences laughing, or gasping. From political satire to celebrity impersonations, the show thrives on skirting the edge of controversy.
And while cast members have endured awkward moments, few can claim to have been personally blindsided quite like Scarlett Johansson, thanks to her husband, Colin Jost.

Jost, a master of dry wit and awkward charm, found himself delivering a joke so risqué that it made his wife momentarily consider fainting. But was it really that bad? Considering SNL’s history of eyebrow-raising humor, this was just another day at 30 Rock.

In 2017, President Donald Trump passed a series of tax cuts that netted major corporations and the ultra wealthy billions in savings — while producing barely noticeable gains for working-class Americans.
Now, as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Republicans look to extend and expand Trump’s 2017 tax cuts — and further redirect wealth upwards — they’re preparing to gut Medicaid and rob the poor of their health care.

A day after interviewing Republican representative Dan Crenshaw, Kaitlan Collins invited another guest on “The Source” to discuss Donald Trump’s recent executive order banning transgender troops from serving openly in the military.
“I have been at the pinnacle of naval aviation. I’m proof standing here that we’re qualified to serve,” Navy Commander Emily Shilling told Collins. Over her 19-and-a-half years of service, Shilling has completed two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as a pilot and has seen 60 combat missions. She is also the president of Sparta, an advocacy group for transgender troops.
Shilling was one of the first naval aviators to regain her flight clearance post-transition. She estimated that her transition kept her out of action for “about a month,” a period of time she likened to a minor knee surgery. She also noted that some people who transition never even take down time. Shilling...

Bill Maher has realized he’s behind on current internet slang, namely “Brat Summer,” after being on a month-long hiatus from Real Time.
While chatting with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins on Friday’s episode, the host attempted to understand the viral phenomenon — which started after Charli Xcx dropped her latest studio album titled Brat in June — that’s taken over social media in recent months.
“What do you think about this? Somehow, Kamala got to be ‘brat,’” Maher asked Collins, to which she joked, “Are you jealous?”
After Maher clarified that he’s “not” jealous, he proceeded to ask his guest if she thought it was a “smart move” for Kamala Harris’ campaign to embrace the label — one that he’s clearly confused by — which has inspired TikTok dances, memes and fashion trends.

House lawmakers overwhelmingly passed legislation today that would force the parent company of TikTok to divest the popular app or face a ban on U.S. platforms.
The legislation passed 352-65, easily clearing the 2/3 threshold needed.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where no timetable is set for considering the legislation.
“The Senate will review the legislation when it comes over from the House,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-ny) said in a statement.
But the bill gained two key supporters, Sen. Mark Warner (D-va) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-fl), the chair and ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who have previously sought measures to restrict the effort.
Under the legislation, ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, would be forced to sell the social media platform within about five months or face having it banned on app stores or web hosting services. The bill, called the Protecting...

The office of House Speaker is officially empty, and the Republican Party is in a state of chaos.

Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) brought a motion to oust him on Monday, and then he and seven other Republicans voted to ditch the California congressman a day later. The rest of the party was not happy, and in some cases visibly distraught, after the GOP left itself with no leader and no clear path forward.

Enrique Tarrio — the capo of the Proud Boys on Jan. 6 — has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for his part in the seditious conspiracy to block the peaceful transfer of power to President Joe Biden following the 2020 election. Tarrio’s two-decade sentence — the stiffest yet for a Jan. 6 defendant — was handed down Tuesday afternoon in a packed Washington, D.C., courtroom.
Tarrio’s prison term tops that delivered to Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oath Keepers, who received 18 years for leading that militia’s seditious conspiracy plot on Jan.

The week of chaos, confusion, and (literal) infighting that preceded Kevin McCarthy’s election as speaker was a pretty strong indication that the Republican Party’s control of the House of Representatives was going to be a shitshow.
They’ve been in control for a week now. Yes, it’s been a shitshow, but the past few days have also served as a reminder that along with all of the antics comes a laser-like focus on derailing the American government.
Republicans have hit the ground running since McCarthy belatedly took up the gavel last Friday.

Kevin McCarthy really, really, really wants to be speaker of the House of Representatives. It’s not coming. The 118th Congress began on Tuesday, and though Republicans won control of the chamber last November, a not-insignificant portion of the party remains steadfastly opposed to giving McCarthy the gavel. McCarthy has lost three consecutive speakership ballots, with 19 Republicans opposing him on the first two, and 20 on the third.
Rep. Byron Donalds joined the 19 other defectors to vote against McCarthy on the third ballot, which means McCarthy is drifting even further away from securing the majority necessary.

On Wednesday’s “The Daily Show,” Trevor Noah took aim at the way Democratic Pennsylvania U.S. Senate Candidate John Fetterman’s recovery from a stroke has been depicted by both major media outlets and Republicans. And in addition to showing why that reaction is ridiculous, he also accurately described the inherent bigotry implied by it, which he called “trash.”
So, for some background, Fetterman was interviewed by NBC News reporter Dasha Burns this week, his first TV interview since having a stroke in May. While Fetterman’s answers were perfectly coherent in the interview, like many stroke victims, he has lingering issues with speech recognition. However, his cognition is unimpaired, he can speak fine and also can read, so he uses captions to ensure he understands what he’s hearing.

“Navel orange!” said Yang and Bryant in unison.
“Navel orange, ew!” joked Yang. “Why do you have a belly button? You’re a fruit!”
“What’s next? Honeydews with C-section scars?” deadpanned Bryant. “Navel orange, go to bed, bitch!”

Survive, from New York: “Saturday Night Live” will continue on without four prominent departing cast members, but most of them got a chance to offer up a few final laughs before the show completed its 47th season.
Word that Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Pete Davidson planned to leave the venerable late-night series after Saturday’s broadcast leaked out late in the week. That made appearances by the actors all the more emotional during NBC’s broadcast of SNL’s season finale. McKinnon made one more run as Ms. Rafferty, the down-and-out woman who is abducted (and probed) by aliens, but lives to tell the tale. The show used its signature “cold open” to reprise the character once more, with Bryant, Mikey Day and Cecily Strong all playing a part along with host Natasha Lyonne. McKinnon and Bryant were at the center of the last sketch of the evening,...

Chad is leaving Studio 8H.
Pete Davidson, who joined “Saturday Night Live” as a relative unknown and has become a superstar whose presence graces gossip pages daily, is expected to leave “Saturday Night Live” after the broadcast of this weekend’s season finale, according to a person familiar with the matter. He is one of a handful of long-serving cast members including Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon whose tenure on the show has come up for scrutiny at the conclusion of recent seasons. Davidson joined the show in 2014 as a featured player at the age of 20, one of the youngest cast members in the program’s 47 seasons on air.
NBC declined to make producers at “SNL” available for comment.
His departure is likely to draw a new burst of attention to the long-running program, which typically uses its summer hiatus to recalibrate its cast of players and contributors.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) is sending out unsolicited applications for mail-in ballots to voters in his district, even after he supported a state law that banned local election officials from the same practice, The Texas Tribune reports.
Last September, Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 1, which made it a felony for officials to send out ballot applications to voters who didn’t request them. Passed by Texas Republicans in a party-line vote after a delayed process that saw dozens of Democratic lawmakers leave the state in protest, the...

Updated, with additional coverage details: The first anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol will be marked by continuous coverage across the broadcast and cable news networks, as reporters and anchors recount the events of that day while sharing plenty of consternation over what has happened since.
The political polarization that has gripped Washington, and much of the country, will be evident by who is expected to participate in commemoration events. Few Republicans are expected, with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate and House Democratic leaders slated to speak at a ceremony Thursday morning.
Former President Donald Trump, whose false claims that the election was stolen from him led his supporters to storm the Capitol, nixed plans to hold a press conference at Mar-a-Lago that would have been a kind of counterprogramming to the D.C. events. While there were reports that Trump’s...

The public feud between Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Dan Crenshaw is getting ugly. The Trump-loving Republican lawmakers were at each others throats on Monday, with Crenshaw suggesting Greene is either “a Democrat — or just an idiot,” and Greene firing back that Crenshaw is “harassing” her.
The two members’ recent disagreement stemmed from remarks Crenshaw made during a Fox News appearance in which he advocated for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) to step in and operate Covid-19 testing sites, which it did during the Trump administration. The U.S.

Republicans and Democrats talked over each other at the latest Congressional hearing over whether and how to yank legal immunity from social media tech giants, all of them mad but unlikely to agree on specific legislation.
The Subcommittee on Communications and Technology (of the Committee on Energy and Commerce) weighed in on “Holding Big Tech Accountable: Targeted Reforms to Tech’s Legal Immunity” with Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen back on the stand joined by witnesses including Kara Frederick, Research Fellow in Technology Policy The Heritage Foundation — who had also worked at Facebook, now called Meta. Haugen focused on the company’s divisive algorithms, Frederick on “the litany of suspensions of ordinary Americans by Big Tech platforms for expressing right-leaning political views.”

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) appeared on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning and accused George Soros and Democratic donors of the “funding far-left, radical DAs and prosecutors” who let the man who drove his S.U.V. into a Waukesha, Wisconsin holiday parade go free on bail days before the attack. Updated: Lawmakers for a key House committee united Thursday in a bipartisan attack on the nation’s three biggest social media platforms and threatened their CEOs with all kinds of oversight.
Peter Welch (D-vt) of the House Energy and Finance Committee discussed creating a public agency like the FCC or FTC with rulemaking and enforcement powers for the Internet — like “the SEC was designed to stop rampant abuse on Wall Street in the 1930s.”
A month after Sen. Amy Klobuchar introduced an antitrust bill aimed at big tech, House pols compared the giant platforms Facebook, Twitter and Google — run by Mark Zuckberg, Jack Dorsey and Sundar Pichai — to old fashioned monopolists like Standard Oil and Ma Bell. The FTC and dozens of states have filed antitrust lawsuits against Google and Facebook.
Reps bashed Facebook’s new push to build an Instagram for kids under 13, likening it to Big Tobacco fostering addiction.

The pandemic has driven home a lesson that’s been true for a long time about Republican politicians: They don’t actually care about the welfare of their constituents so long as they’re able to trick enough people into people into believing the other side is responsible for everything that’s wrong. Nearly 500,000 people have died and millions more have had their lives upturned largely because of the GOP’s negligence, but they’ll have you believe the real enemies are the liberals impinging on your freedom by asking you to wear a mask.

The highlight of the third night of the Republican National Convention will be speeches by Vice President Mike Pence and the second lady of the United States, Karen Pence, but there is another major news story looming: Hurricane Laura.
Throughout the day on Wednesday, news networks already were doing a split screen tracker of the hurricane, which is posing a threat to the Gulf Coast as a potential category four storm as it makes landfall. That is projected on the Louisiana and Texas coasts sometime late in the evening or Thursday morning.
Convention planners have not yet said how or if the oncoming hurricane will be addressed during the evening’s events, or if any plans are changing.
This actually is not a new thing for political conventions – which often land in August, at the start of hurricane season. In 2008, Republicans canceled most of the events planned for the first...

Pete Davidson's was the first millennial cast member hired by Saturday Night Live. He delivered one of my all-time favorite SNL moments when he welcomed Congressman and former Navy Seal Dan Crenshaw on the show for a comedic reconciliation.
The on-air meeting occurred one week after Davidson mocked Crenshaw's eye patch the week prior (a moment that simultaneously had boasted the Congressman's sense of humor).
Faulty first impressions, it seems, lead to hasty errs in judgment.
And that is the message taken from Davidson's starring debut, The King of Staten Island, to be released digitally on June 12 by Universal.
