I have to admit I have a soft spot for high school romance/dramas, particularly when their story includes some depth which prevents them from being soapy. “The Uniform” is definitely one of those titles.

The story takes place in 1997. Ai, whose mother is running a sort of cram school for kids from their house, fails to enter the prestigious First Girl’s High School, which accepts only the top scorers in the national Comprehensive Assessment Program for Junior High School Students. Her mother, though, forces her to enroll in the school’s night program instead. The day and night students (whose classes begin at 4pm) wear the same uniform but different colored name tags, but their main difference is that the former look down on the latter, in a concept that becomes quite evident to Ai quite early on.

Hit crime thriller “The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon” received 13 nominations for the upcoming Taipei Film Festival’s Taipei Film Awards. These include nominations for best feature, best director, best screenplay, best actor, best supporting actress, and best supporting actor. It was followed by “Old Fox” with ten nominations and “Big,” with eight.

The film tells the story of a gangster who discovers that he is only the country’s third most wanted criminal and, before he dies, sets out to eliminate those ranking above him.

The best film contenders are “Salli,” “Trouble Girl,” “Big,” “Old Fox” and “The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon.”

Considering the amount of movies we have seen about Covid the last few years, finding one that deals with 2003 Sars is actually surprising nowadays. HBO Asia has unveiled details of its light-hearted Chinese-language drama series “Workers.” The show is the latest in a growing roster of local productions in Asia, by pay-tv groups and digital platforms.

Based on a novel of the same title, the show follows a group of construction workers who daydream about being wealthy. They resort to countless outrageous get-rich-quick schemes only to make fools out of themselves. The cast is headed by Christopher Lee (“A Good Wife”) and Alex Ko (“Back to the Good Times”).

HBO will upload it to HBO Go from May 10, with the first two episodes immediately available. The remaining four parts will follow as weekly instalments.

The show is an HBO Asia Original series produced in association with Kbro Media and Him International Music. Production is by DaMou Entertainment, the studio behind another HBO Asia series “The World Between Us.”
