Miraculous: The Tales Of Ladybug & Cat Noir combines elements of a magical girl anime with those of more traditional superhero stories to create a fun take on teenagers saving the world. After five seasons of episodes, the show has only improved in its execution, expanding its cast of characters and the mythology of the Miraculouses along the way.
The show continues to get better with each new season, as most of the best episodes occur in Season Four. What's also clear is that fans of the show aren't just in it for the superhero battles, as most of the best-rated episodes of the series also feature strong emotional components.

"Saltburn" is a different kind of monster movie.
Playing like a gothic romance (in the traditional sense of the word) retold through the lens of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley stories, it's one of the bleakest films of 2023, and a real bad time at the movies. In a good way -- this is a film that revels proudly in its darkness. Because writer/director Emerald Fennell, who proved adept at pushing the right buttons with the similarly cruel "Promising Young Woman," knows that monsters can be seductive, that we can and will have sympathy for the devil, and that we'll follow an especially clever creature to the ends of the earth if they prove interesting enough.
And Oliver Quick, played by Barry Keoghan with the kind of shocking bravery that has catapulted him to the top of the "most interesting actors in the world" list over the past few years, is a special kind of monster.

“This could easily have been set in Hollywood,” Emerald Fennell said of her new film Saltburn, during a post-screening Q&a at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
The actual setting is, in fact, a long way from Hollywood. Fennell’s sophomore follow-up to her Oscar Best Picture-nominated, Best Screenplay-winner Promising Young Woman, Saltburn follows Oliver (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford University student who befriends Felix (Jacob Elordi), an aristocratic, manor-born adonis.
Plunged into the eccentric world of the über-posh British upper classes on a visit to Felix’s family estate, Oliver is both awkward outsider and furtive observer. We meet Felix’s parents (Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant), his ascerbic cousin (Archie Madekwe), and wayward sister (Alison Oliver). Fennell also reunites with her Promising Young Woman star Carey Mulligan, who has an all-too-short stint as an unhinged houseguest.

The world has certainly come a long way from the time when funny cat clips seemed to overwhelm the internet. With the help of director Sarah Jayne and her new documentary film, Cats of Malta, the web’s oldest tradition of feline viral videos has now evolved into a much more serious and heartfelt venture. Compiled just beneath the bright sunny skies and over the flowing canals of this beautiful archipelago, all the numerous interviewees in this hour-long feature have a fantastic story to share in regard to their unique relation with the cat community.
With only a few momentary misfires, Cats of Malta is very much an entertaining show and tell spectacle. In between the calls for government-sponsored feeding programs, the need for financial help toward the already established non-governmental organizations, and raising positive awareness against an underlying prejudice that associates stray cats with vermin, a widespread consensus in...

It took guts to re-air any part of Yellowstone on CBS.
Yellowstone Season 1 Episode 1 was not the sanitized Westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. This series tells it like it is, and the coarse language is an important part of the Western's character. So is the violence.
Nothing in this series is gratuitous, but it is graphic -- and originally made for cable, where there are looser standards about what can and cannot be said.
The introduction to the Duttons felt more like a movie than a television series. The cinematography was breathtaking, but I was struck by the symbolism of the opening scene and how well it foreshadowed Lee's death.
It's not fair, this life. I wish I could give you better. The best I can offer you is peace.
John Dutton Permalink: It's not fair, this life. I wish I could give you better. The best I can offer you is peace.

Afire is a movie that showcases the talent of director Christian Petzold, known for his emotionally charged dramas and strong political messages. The film focuses on a frustrating main character, Leon, which forces the audience to reflect on their own tendency to procrastinate and ignore genuine connections. Afire explores the hardships of human connection in a society defined by constant availability, highlighting the beauty of mystery and the need to pay attention to our surroundings.
Afire is one of the best movies 2023 has to offer, but its limited release just before Barbenheimer caused the film to stay out of the radar of many people. Stray Kids took the stage at the 2023 MTV VMAs to perform “S-Class,” a song from their latest album, 5-star. Check out their appearance on the awards show below.
Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. donned near-military garb for their aggressive performance of “S-Class,” which oscillates between rapped verses and soft-sung choruses. The track really helps set Stray Kids apart from other K-pop groups; with heavy drums and dance breaks, the boys’ interest in hip-hop and noise music becomes clear.
Stray Kids took home the Best K-Pop VMA for “S-Class,” which Consequence named Song of the Week earlier this year. The group — one of 10 K-pop acts who ruled the genre in 2022 — recently played a triumphant show in Atlanta that we recapped in full. Revisit our interview with the boy band here.

It’s 2023 and the early 2000s are having a moment: blog rock is being celebrated, nü metal is back, and Emerald Fennell––perhaps recognizing this vibe shift––sets her latest film Saltburn in 2006. The period setting is a wise move on a few fronts: it affords the film a killer soundtrack of early cuts from Mgmt, Arcade Fire, and Bloc Party. It also lets these teenagers party and have sex without doing the verbal dance that accompanies such topics on campus these days.
Its setup is familiar: first-year Oxford student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) is an outsider, his one “friend” a mental math savant who is more realistic about their dire social prospects. Oliver, refusing to accept this, eventually falls in with the cool kids, led by Felix. Felix is everything Oliver is not: tall, rich, effortlessly handsome, confident enough to rock an eyebrow piercing. He prioritizes partying over studying.

Jacob Elordi landed a significant role in Saltburn despite the director, Emerald Fennell, never having seen his work on Euphoria. Fennell chose Elordi for the role because she was impressed by his authentic and powerful performance. Saltburn is about an Oxford student named Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) who gets drawn into a glamorous and intriguing world when visiting his irresistible classmate Felix's (Elordi) palatial estate.
Jacob Elordi landed a major role in Saltburn even though director Emerald Fennell has never seen an episode of his breakout HBO show, Euphoria. Exclusive: Emerald Fennell likened making Saltburn, her dangerously dark comedy of class and lack of manners, “to taking your clothes off and exposing yourself.”
The filmmaker, who won an Oscar and BAFTAs for her debut feature Promising Young Woman, clarified that the “transgressive” material that she’s interested in working on means “that you have to spend a lot of your time as a director saying, ‘Trust me, I think this how we’re going to do it.’ And so then people watch it, which is so thrilling. But yeah, you are showing yourself. You are taking your clothes off and exposing yourself.”
She added that Saltburn, while made on a big canvas, is a ”very intimate“ movie.
She told me during a long conversation at the Telluride Film Festival, where the film had its world premiere, that this is a film “about needing and wanting and desire and sex.

Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” brings style, swag and a whole lot of Barry Keoghan’s manhood to the award race. After having its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday night, festivalgoers were in for a wild bonanza of colors, lights and one of the sexiest films to grace the big screen so far this year.
Fennell’s previous film as a director, 2020’s “Promising Young Woman,” was a hit with Oscar voters, scoring five nominations, including one for best picture. But “Saltburn” looks to be much more divisive with critics and audiences.
“Saltburn” follows a college student named Oliver (Keoghan), as he finds himself drawn into the world of a charming and aristocratic classmate (Jacob Elordi) after he is invited to his eccentric family’s sprawling estate for a summer.

The 2023 Telluride Film Festival launched on Thursday with numerous world premieres – including the first public screenings of Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin,” Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers,” and Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” – but few had attendees buzzing like “Saltburn.” At least based on anecdotal evidence, the new film from “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker and Oscar winner Emerald Fennell was the evening’s hottest event, with a capacity crowd at the Palm theater all but vibrating before the film’s world premiere – and then left stunned in its aftermath.
Set primarily in 2006, “Saltburn” focuses on the unexpected friendship that forms between Oliver (Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan), a young Oxford student on scholarship, and Felix (“Euphoria” star Jacob Elordi), the wealthy big man on campus with whom Oliver takes an intense interest. The film draws its title from Felix’s family estate, where he spends the summer with Oliver.

The haves and have-nots of Great Britain always have served as ripe subject matter for writers of every stripe, and the tradition continues in Saltburn, a vibrant if rather familiar take on the class system circa 2006. Emerald Fennell, following up on her Oscar-winning script for Promising Young Woman, reveals a strong hand behind the camera, even if the trajectory of the story feels rather overwrought and familiar. Nonetheless, the writing is alive and often amusing, giving the fine cast a lot to play with.
At the center of things is Oliver Quick, a name of which Dickens certainly would have approved. Very engagingly played by Barry Keoghan, who broke through last year in The Banshees of Inisherin, Oliver is a teenager without parents whose looks are both odd and appealing and who is determined to break through the class and expectations barrier to make something of himself. It’s the moment of truth for Emerald Fennell, whose “Promising Young Woman” established the actor-turned-auteur (last seen playing pregnant doll Midge in “Barbie”) as a formidable new filmmaking talent. Building on the barbed sensibility she established with “Killing Eve,” the writer-director’s zeitgeist-throttling feature debut lured audiences like a bright red candy apple, leaving them with plenty to debate after the cyanide-laced sugar high wore off. But what exactly did that pop provocation promise, in terms of where Fennell’s wicked-sinister imagination might go next? Surely something more satisfying than “Saltburn.”
But first the positive, as the shortcomings will swiftly make themselves apparent: A tall drink of Evelyn Waugh spiked with Patricia Highsmith bitters, Fennell’s sophomore feature boasts a distinctive, splashy look for its demented critique of pomp and privilege among England’s elitist upper class. Emerald Fennell likes things to be deeply cinematic, with elements that are vast, weird and flamboyant. No matter what you thought of the actor-turned-director’s genre-defying and much debated “Promising Young Woman”—it’s been called unapologetically feminist by defenders like this critic and, well, whatever’s the opposite of that, by others—her filmic appetite that rejected the mundane and conventional was undeniable in that original debut.
After a recent appearance as Midge in “Barbie,” Fennell is back in the directing chair with her unclassifiable sophomore caper “Saltburn,” a studiously mannered dark comedy-cum-thriller that spans across Oxford University and a massive mansion in the North Yorkshire town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and feels marvelously British. It’s almost as British as the likes of “Withnail and I” and “Jeeves and Wooster.”

"From small-town Florida to the bustling beaches and bright lights of Miami, Neon follows three friends as they hustle their way to making it big in the world of reggaeton," the official description teases.
"The eight-episode comedy captures not only the three besties' larger-than-life dreams, but also the harsh realities and funny mishaps of surviving the music industry."
The series stars Tyler Dean Flores as Santi, a rising reggaeton artist who, with the help of his friends Ness (Emma Ferreira), Felix (Jordan Mendoza), and A&r rep Mia (Courtney Taylor), hopes to become the biggest star in reggaeton.
"Or at least pay his rent," the tongue-in-cheek logline adds.
Neon was co-created by Shea Serrano and Max Searle, who also serves as showrunner.

Netflix’s new comedy “Neon,” which executive produced by Daddy Yankee, is bringing all the heat this fall.
In the teaser for “Neon,” which is set for an Oct. 19 launch, three friends from a small town in Florida make their way to Miami as rising reggaeton artist Santi (Tyler Dean Flores) attempts to climb his way to the top of the music industry with the help of his friends Ness (Emma Ferreira), Felix (Jordan Mendoza), and A&r rep Mia (Courtney Taylor).
“Picture it: you are a star,” Ness tells Santi, who dreams of becoming “the biggest reggaeton star in the world” in the teaser. “We have to show them that we’re not just some loser wanna-bees.”
“Ness, the three of us currently live in a 2009 Toyota Corolla,” Felix says, injecting some reality into the group’s dreams.
While industry staples are immediately impressed by Santi’s “rare” fluency as a writer,...

Emerald Fennell found her crown jewel in Barry Keoghan for “Saltburn.” Fennell, who won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for her feature debut “Promising Young Woman,” told Vanity Fair that she cast Keoghan in sophomore film “Saltburn” after seeing 2017 film “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”
Yorgos Lanthimos’ body horror thriller first pitted Keoghan and Colin Farrell side-by-side prior to their respective Oscar-nominated performances in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Keoghan portrayed a disturbed teen with seemingly supernatural abilities to kill those who wronged him. The actor went on to play the Joker in “The Batman.”
“I just thought, ‘That’s a once-in-a-lifetime performer. There’s no equivalent,'” Fennell recalled of first seeing Keoghan onscreen. “He’s just so compelling. He’s got a kind of sex appeal and a vulnerability and a physical presence and a sort of darkness, or he can at least communicate these things in a way that is very rare.

Brooke Davis and Lucas Scott may not have been endgame in One Tree Hill, but for a time, they were a great couple. It is sometimes debated whether Lucas should have ended up with Brooke. Regardless, that doesn’t take away the love story they got in the series. It still can be enjoyable even if fans know how it will end.
Brooke showed Lucas how to be less serious and have some fun. He was always brooding, but Brooke brought out a different side of him. So even if fans were truly Leyton shippers, they could still enjoy Brucas. There were a lot of ups and downs during their relationship, especially when Peyton Sawyer came between them. But there are episodes that can that fans can relive the bliss of Brucas.

If there’s one thing Christian Petzold does well it’s introspective examinations of characters at the heart of overwhelming circumstances. Which isn’t the most succinct thing to put on your CV but you have to admit he does it well. After all he has a whole trilogy of films he calls ‘Love in Times of Oppressive Systems’ so clearly it’s working for him.
His latest piece, Afire, focuses on a narcissistic author agonising over his latest novel while sharing a holiday home in the Baltic Sea, completely uninterested in the raging wildfires consuming the nearby woodland. It’s a fitting subject for an artist like Petzold, a creative so obsessed with their own endeavours that they become openly hostile to anything outside themselves.
That sums up our protagonist Leon (Thomas Schubert) in a nutshell. A schlubby, sullen writer chafing against his idyllic surroundings. He refuses to go...

Thomas Schubert on playing Leon in Afire: 'I always felt like there was quite a bit of myself in my character. It is really interesting that we all sort of have that memory of being that way' Photo: Curzon Austrian Thomas Schubert stars Afire in the latest film from Christian Petzold, an offbeat comedy of sorts set on a summer that is smouldering with possibilities, both literal and figurative. Schubert, who was a non-professional when he took on his breakout role in 2011’s Breathing, at the age of 17, has since established himself an impressive and varied career, notching up more than 30 TV and film roles. His latest sees him play Leon, a writer who is heading on a summer retreat with his buddy Felix (Langston Uibel) in a bid to complete his second novel.

"Yes, we want to build this house really for real at this altitude. Yes, we really want go on a glacier." They went to any length to make this film feel real, and authentic, and it's all the better for it. One of my favorite films of 2022 (and 2023) is called The Eight Mountains, an Italian drama about two friends who grew up in the mountains. I have been raving about it since the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, seeing it again at another festival in late 2022, following its release in spring of 2023. Co-directed by Belgian filmmakers Felix van Groeningen & Charlotte Vandermeersch (who are also married), the film is a remarkable look at how massively powerful mountains are in shaping the lives of humans. I get all emotional just thinking about it, as I'm a huge mountain nerd myself. I was lucky to get time to interview Felix & Charlotte earlier in 2023 - I'd...

If the previous episode of Hijack was a little bit of a dud, it’s probably because the series had in its arsenal the latest episode, which absolutely knocked it out of the park with its thrilling turn of events. The hijackers had threatened to do further damage if the authorities didn’t release Edgar Janssen and John Bailey-Brown. Sam was running out of breathing space, as the plane was just a couple of hours away from its destination, and the situation on the flight was dangerously close to getting out of hand. Stuart had lost his brother Lewis, and he could wreak havoc if he lost his composure. Sam knew that and had to come up with a way to minimize the damage. This episode finally showed us the dreaded criminals Edgar and John, to secure whose freedom the plane had been hijacked, apparently. The real shocker came at...

Afire.Paula Beer has said that she wants to avoid any clear overlaps with her personal life as she’s preparing a character. To her credit, there’s something about her acting that eschews biographical readings: she invites us into the present as her characters are experiencing it. Beer, who was born in Mainz, Germany, has been acting since she was a child; she was 14 when she stepped onto the set of her first movie, Chris Kraus’s The Poll Diaries (2010). Just a few years later, she won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for her turn as a young widow in François Ozon’s World War I drama Frantz (2016)—a performance that showed how, even in the framework of a fairly traditional romantic drama, Beer could hint subtly at her character’s interiority beyond what was on the page. From there, it was a quick jump to the cycle of films...

It took Boots Riley five years to produce the follow-up to his deservedly acclaimed 2018 satire Sorry To Bother You. Fortunately, Prime’s I’m A Virgo is worth the wait. Another trippy satirical thrill ride from Riley, I’m A Virgo tells the story of Cootie. A giant who was raised in seclusion, Cootie becomes an unlikely folk hero when he escapes into the colorful environs of his Oakland neighborhood. Cootie’s tragicomic coming-of-age forms the bulwark of I’m A Virgo’s story.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for I'm A Virgo
The iconic Boots Riley returns to screens with I’m A Virgo, a funny, surreal, and rousing story that features a surprising ending. Although Boots Riley was a hip-hop legend for decades before Sorry To Bother You’s 2018 release, that indie satire established him as a major cinematic talent. Sorry To Bother You blended comedy, sci-fi, and surrealism to satirize race relations, corporate culture, and contemporary capitalism. Riley’s follow-up, Amazon's I’m A Virgo, sees the filmmaker return to this fertile creative ground for the story of Cootie, a 13-foot-tall Oakland native. Cootie’s coming-of-age and his introduction to American life are chronicled in I’m A Virgo season 1.
Like Sorry To Bother You’s infamous ending, I’m A Virgo’s ending is likely to leave some viewers confused. Cootie spends most of I’m A Virgo season 1 developing friendships with Jones, Felix, and Scat while tentatively romancing Flora,...

This article contains spoilers for all seven episodes of I’m a Virgo.
There’s a lot going on in I’m a Virgo, Boots Riley’s seven-episode series on Prime Video. The mere premise of the show itself – that of a 13-foot tall young Black man from Oakland finding himself – is a lot to unpack. And that’s before the Sorry to Bother You filmmaker begins to introduce other elements of magical realism.
Cootie’s (Jharrel Jerome) journey to self discovery features: a cult cartoon called Parking Tickets that has the potential to drive people insane, a billionaire comic book writer who becomes his own fascist creation called The Hero (Walton Goggins), and of course: plenty of revolutionary labor politics.
All of those disparate threads come to a head in the I’m a Virgo finale in which Cootie and friends have sabotaged a power facility in a fruitless attempt at...

I’m a Virgo, an Amazon series directed by Boots Riley, is a story of self-exploration and the complexities of existing in a world that often rejects individuality. Set against a contemporary backdrop, this thought-provoking series delves into the life of Cootie, a 13-foot-tall, gigantic teenager, as he embarks on a transformative journey of discovering his true self. Although Cootie thought he could fly high and do amazing things, he was faced with many difficult situations where people wanted to take advantage of him because of his size. But as he went through these challenges, Cootie learned that real heroes are not just characters in colorful comic books. Being a hero requires thinking carefully and being patient. It’s not about having superpowers or being big but about making wise choices and staying calm in tough times.

Boots Riley’s coming-of-age joyride series, I’m a Virgo, is like one of those dreams that leave you wondering, “What was that?” My reaction throughout the series, from the start to the middle and all the way to the end, was just like that. The series starts off with a woman carrying a giant baby, immediately setting the absurd tone of the series. This baby, named Cootie (Jharrel Jerome), grows up to be a gigantic 13-foot-tall man, hidden away from the world by his adoptive parents, who fear others might exploit him. While this may seem like a typical fantasy plot, the true madness of I’m a Virgo unfolds gradually. So, let’s delve into this madness and attempt to decipher what was really happening in the series.

Afro-surrealism has been on Hollywood’s radar for some time now. From Donald Glover’s groundbreaking series “Atlanta” to Terence Nance’s thought-provoking “Random Acts of Flyness” and Jordan Peele’s critically acclaimed films “Get Out” and “Nope,” this formerly niche genre seems to be thriving in mainstream entertainment.
Writer, producer and musician Boots Riley, whose 2018 film “Sorry to Bother You” catapulted him to prominence as a filmmaker, returns with his latest project: “I’m A Virgo” on Prime Video. This highly anticipated series solidifies his position among the pioneers of the Afro-surrealist genre.
Afrofuturism and Afro-surrealism, often seen as interchangeable, are different. Where Afrofuturism blends the African diaspora’s art, science and music to speculate on the future, Afro-surrealism is about the now. Why romanticize a dystopian future when so many working-class Black and brown bodies live in oppressive spaces at this moment?
