Princess ‘Diana’ Musical to Premiere on Netflix Ahead of Broadway Debut
Princess Diana
A new Broadway musical about the life of the late Princess Diana called “Diana” will make its debut in a filmed version on Netflix ahead of its premiere on Broadway — which has been shut down since March due to the coronavirus.

Jeanna de Waal stars in the musical that started previews back in March and was meant to open on March 31 at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway.

“Diana,” directed by Christopher Ashley, will be filmed without an audience on the stage of the Longacre Theater and will feature the original Broadway cast including de Waal as Diana, Roe Hartrampfas Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles, and two-time Tony winner Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth. The producers have worked closely with Actor’s Equity Association on all protocols.

The show is currently scheduled to open on Broadway on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, and the filmed version will debut on Netflix at some time next year.

SAG-AFTRA Board To Hear Proposal To Lower Stunt Performers’ Full Retirement Age
Hollywood’s stunt performers — whose careers, like those of professional athletes, tend to decline after a certain age — have been lobbying the SAG Pension Plan, without success, for decades to allow them to retire with full benefits at age 55. They can currently take early retirement at that age but with a 30% reduction in pension benefits.

At its meeting this weekend, SAG-AFTRA’s national board of directors is expected to take up the issue in response to a resolution approved at the union’s convention in October, which urged the board to recommend to the Pension Plan’s trustees that they provide full pensions at age 55 to all members – like stunt performers and dancers – who work in physically taxing professions. In the past, however, the pension trustees have said that doing so would cost the Plan too much money.

The latest push to lower the full retirement age for stunt performers...

Department Of Labor Finds $750,000 Misappropriated From SAG Pension & Health Plans
Image
The U.S. Department of Labor has found that more than $750,000 was misappropriated from the SAG Pension & Health Plans, according to guild sources familiar with the probe. The money has been repaid by the Plans’ insurer, and the DoL’s investigation was closed last month.

Guild sources say that the misuse of the Plans’ funds stem largely from excessive fees paid on investments; improper spending on holiday, staff retirement and anniversary parties; and excessive spending by the trustees for meals, limos and meetings.

The misappropriation of funds is in addition to the millions of dollars embezzled by Nader Karimi, the Plans’ former chief information officer, who was sentenced in April to five years of probation after having pled guilty to filing a false income tax return in which he failed to report more than $700,000 in kickbacks he received from contractors he hired to upgrade the Plans’ computer system.

Bruce Dow, the Plans’ former chief administrator,...

Former SAG Pension & Health Plans Exec Nader Karimi Gets Probation In Tax Fraud Case
Image
The former chief information technology officer at the SAG Pension and Health Plans, who pleaded guilty to tax fruad was sentenced today to five years’ probation. Nader Karimi pleaded guilty in November to filing a false income tax return in which he failed to report more than $700,000 in kickbacks he received from contractors he hired to upgrade the Plans’ computer system.

U.S. District Court Judge Fernando Olguin also ordered Karimi to serve eight months of home detention with electronic monitoring and pay $208,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Attorney Angela Davis had asked for a year and a day in federal prison, but the U.S. Probation Office had recommended that he serve no jail time.

“I can’t begin to say how ashamed and sorry I am,” Karimi said before the sentencing. “I let everyone down. I have asked God for forgiveness, and I humbly...

SAG Pension & Health Plan Whistleblower Craig Simmons Wasn’t First To Ring Alarms
Exclusive: Fully two years before whistleblower Craig Simmons alerted the U.S. Department of Labor to alleged malfeasance at the $3 billion SAG Pension & Health Plans, fellow employee Gary Mathis made virtually identical allegations to the federal agency, Deadline has learned.

Mathis and Simmons both filed claims and wrongful-termination suits, with decidedly different outcomes. Mathis’ claims were rejected by an arbitrator, but Simmons’ claims went public, with coverage so intense it led to the resignation of Bruce Dow, the benefit plans’ longtime CEO. The Simmons arbitration resulted in a confidential settlement, and that Dol probe is ongoing.

Mathis says that while the investigation into his charges led to the subsequent inquiries, “I got nothing out of it,” he told Deadline, which has obtained the Labor Department complaint he filed in 2009 (read it here). “Craig reached out to me when he was going through his lawsuit, and I met with him and with the FBI.

Embezzlement Allegations Over SAG Pension & Health Plans End Quietly
Bruce Dow
Allegations of widespread embezzlement at the SAG Pension & Health Plans that ruined the career of the benefit plans’ longtime chief administrator Bruce Dow quietly have been settled. “That case is over,” said Robin Dal Soglio, the attorney who represented Dow and the plans in a confidential arbitration of the matter. The case that started with a bang has ended with a thud.

The allegations made headlines when Craig Simmons, the plans’ executive director of human resources, alleged in 2011 that Dow was sending the plans’ insurance business to his wife and that she pocketed part of the premiums, that Dow underreported the amount of money allegedly embezzled by a former employee, that Dow paid his brother-in-law for a no-show job and that Dow used insider information to benefit his church.

In his initial 2012 lawsuit (read it here), Simmons alleged that he was wrongfully terminated in March 2011, because he wouldn’t cover...

SAG P&H Plans Name New CEO To Replace Retiring Chris Dowdell
Almost two years after merging SAG-aftra still haven’t melded their pension and health plans, but the SAG Plan now has a new CEO. Michael Estrada, former Executive Director, Investments and Finance, will take over the Screen Actors Guild-Producers Pension & Health Plans “effective immediately,” SAG-pphp said today. The scandal-plagued plans saw Christopher Dowdell announced last year he was exiting the CEO gig after just more than a year in the job. The former COO stepped in after previous controversial CEO Bruce Dow exited in April 2012. Both SAG and AFTRA’s separate plans are expected to be a major topic of discussion in the union’s upcoming negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers over a new 3-year contract. SAG-aftra and AMPTP have not yet set a start date for those talks, but the current contract expires June 30 — the same day as the DGA, who struck their new...

SAG P&H Plan Sued Again By Whistleblower
Update: SAG Pension & Health Plans whistleblower Craig E. Simmons filed a second lawsuit today against his former employers. Today’s suit (read it here) stems from a letter that the SAG-pphp Board of Trustees sent out to plan participants on December 22, 2011 declaring that Simmons’ allegations of embezzlement against then CEO Bruce Dow were false, according to an independent investigator. “Plaintiff is informed and believes that the Board of Trustees wrote this letter knowing that Plaintiff’s allegations against Dow were true,” says today’s complaint. Seeking a jury trial, the defamation and invasion of privacy suit by the former SAG-pphp Executive Director of the Human Resources comes after he filed a wrongful termination suit against the organization back on March 22. In that initial suit, Simmons alleges that he was wrongfully terminated on March 25, 2011, because he wouldn’t cover up Dow’s alleged multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme of the SAG-Pension and Health Plans.

Former SAG Pension & Health Plan Employee Sues Plan a Second Time
The SAG Pension & Health Plan’s former head of human resources and information technology, Craig Simmons, sued the Plan for defamation and invasion of privacy Wednesday, alleging that the Plan published false allegations about Simmons in a letter sent to SAG members on or about December 22, 2011. This is the second lawsuit filed by Simmons against the Plan. In his first suit, filed in March, he alleged wrongful termination a year earlier, in retaliation for reporting alleged illegal conduct by the organization’s CEO, Bruce Dow. Longtime SAG P&H Plan Manager Exits
Marianna Edwards has left her position as manager of the SAG Producers Pension & Health Plan, Deadline has confirmed. “Marianna Edwards is no longer working here,” a SAG P&H Human Resources official said today. In fact, she hasn’t been working there for at least two weeks. Edwards resigned in late October after 27 years at SAG. Her departure came around the same time the SAG-aftra National Board received an uninformative Pension, Health & Retirement Report from the trustees of the still separate SAG Producers Pension and Health Plan and the AFTRA Health and Retirement Plan. In July, the National Board of the now merged union passed a motion urging the trustees of the plans to unify and to immediately implement a reciprocity agreement between the two plans. Craig Simmons, the SAG Pension & Health Plan’s former head of human resources and information technology, sued the Plan for wrongful termination Thursday, alleging that he was discharged a year ago after reporting alleged illegal conduct by the organization’s CEO, Bruce Dow. Bruce Dow Tackles King Herod in 'Jesus Christ Superstar'
Bruce Dow wanted to be a leading man and believed it was necessary for him to become one lean dude. He spent a decade as an anorexic and then a bulimic. (No, it's not only a woman's issue). He landed leading roles, but these were not especially satisfying and he ultimately regained the weight. When director Susan H. Schulman cast him as the rotund Pancho Sanza in "Man of La Mancha" at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, he had a life and career altering revelation. It was not simply his success in the part or the juicy character roles that poured in—from the emcee in "Cabaret," to Trinculo in "The Tempest" to his current gig as the wild and campy King Herod in the Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar."It turned out to be a lesson in self-acceptance. "When I was thin,...

New York — What's the buzz? A hit production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Canada is coming south to Broadway.

Producers announced Tuesday that the rock musical about the last days of Jesus written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will hit New York in the spring, a move that was widely expected.

Previews will begin on March 1 at the Neil Simon Theatre and an official opening is set for March 22. Des McAnuff, the artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, where the revival originated this summer, will again direct.

"I'm extremely happy, and very, very happy for the company of actors because I think they anticipated that this might happen and I certainly haven't discouraged them from believing that," McAnuff said by phone from Italy.

The guitar- and keyboard-driven musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1971, includes such songs as "What's the Buzz?" "Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him.
