Baltimore Is Fighting the Right-Wing Takeover of Its Iconic Newspaper
Image
Although Elon Musk’s quixotic purchase of Twitter, which he redubbed X, seems to have played a significant role in giving him full and unfettered access to the gears of government, one right-wing rich guy’s purchase of a media company did not result in his desired electoral outcome last year. Putative billionaire David D. Smith, Sinclair Broadcast Group’s executive chair, bought The Baltimore Sun in January 2024 and, yet, his candidates in the primary and a ballot initiative that he solely funded were resoundingly defeated by voters in Baltimore.

Susan Smith
This Friday, February 14, 2025, at 9:00 Pm Et/8:00 Pm Ct, Dateline NBC presents “Return to the Lake”, an in-depth investigation into Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who admitted to murdering her two children in 1994. After serving more than 30 years in prison, Smith was recently denied parole, sparking renewed interest in this haunting case.

Correspondent Craig Melvin reports on the emotional parole hearing, where Susan Smith, now 53, expressed deep remorse for her actions, saying, “I know that what I did was horrible. And I would give anything if I could go back and change it.” During the hearing, she described the tragic events leading to the deaths of her children, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, whom she drowned by driving their car into a lake. Smith’s defense team argued that mental health issues contributed to her actions, while her ex-husband, David Smith, strongly opposed her release, saying that she had never shown genuine remorse.

Dateline NBC “Return to the Lake” February 14 2025 Recap & Preview
Susan Smith
This Friday, February 14, 2025, at 9:00 Pm Et/8:00 Pm Ct, Dateline NBC presents “Return to the Lake”, an in-depth investigation into the tragic and notorious case of Susan Smith, a South Carolina woman who admitted to drowning her two young sons, Michael and Alexander, 30 years ago. Susan Smith recently appeared before the parole board for the first time, and her request for parole was unanimously denied.

In the emotional parole hearing, Smith expressed deep remorse for her actions, saying, “I know that what I did was horrible. And I would give anything if I could go back and change it.” However, her ex-husband, David Smith, who has long fought for justice for his sons, argued against her release, emphasizing that the punishment she served was not enough for the gravity of the crime. He added, “This wasn’t a tragic mistake. She purposely meant to end their life.”

‘The Traitors’: BBC & Studio Lambert Accused Of Being Misleading About Hit Show’s Scottish Roots
Image
Exclusive: The Traitors is all about backstabbing and accusations, but accusations of deception have now extended to the behind-the-scenes production of the hit show.

The BBC has been accused of painting a “truly shocking picture” when it comes to the number of people working on the show who are based in Scotland, which is where it is filmed and where it qualifies as a “Scottish commission” under Ofcom regulations.

The Traitors UK is made by Studio Lambert Scotland and is filmed at a castle in remote Inverness. However, veteran Scottish TV director Peter Strachan, who is on the board of trade body Director’s UK, has claimed the show could be failing on the Ofcom regulations. These regulations require producers to meet two of three criteria to qualify as out-of-London: having a “substantive base” in the region, investing 70% of “production spend” outside the English capital and having at least 50% of...

Where Stargate Sg-1's Cast Is Now, 27 Years Later
Image
It's been 27 years since Stargate Sg-1 began, and the talented cast has continued entertaining audiences in the years since the series concluded. The hit sci-fi TV show started with its first season in 1997 and featured stars Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge as the titular team Sg-1. This cast continued playing their respective characters for the following years until Stargate Sg-1 ended with season 10 in 2006 (though some of the stars took breaks here and there). Of course, this wasn't the end of their careers.

2024 marks 18 years since Stargate Sg-1 season 10 came to a close, but the age of streaming means that more audiences than ever have found and fallen in love with the show. Stargate checks all the boxes for a great sci-fi, full of campy action, heroic sacrifices, leagues of aliens (both good and evil), and a team of lovable characters. Unfortunately, the stories surrounding Jack O'Neill,...

Pete Muller Premieres New Song “And (Hold On)”: Exclusive
Image
Singer-songwriter Pete Muller is gearing up for his sixth studio album, More Time, out this Friday (May 17th). In advance of the release, Consequence has an exclusive premiere of the opening track, “And (Hold On),” and its accompanying music video.

Kicking off with a grooving Rhodes piano riff, “And (Hold On)” was inspired by the “conflict between being an artist and a good husband/father,” as Muller explains to Consequence. “Instead of picking one or the other, I choose to go for both: Hold on to what you want And hold on to what you got.”

The track was recorded in Memphis with producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang and features contributions from former Wilco drummer Ken Coomer, guitarist Will Sexton, organist Rick Steff, and bassist Dave Smith.

“All of them learned the song the day we recorded it, and Will came up with an out-of-the-blue crazy guitar riff that really makes the track come alive,...

Peter Bart: A Biden-Trump Rematch Dims Cable News Prospects And A Print Media Biz Already In Trouble
Image
“Sequels suck, whether you’re making them or watching them.” So said one storied filmmaker in rejecting a rich movie deal (details below), and he’d likely react the same if offered Biden vs. Trump.

The New Hampshire primary results this week reinforced media alarm over a projected 2024 rerun that could fracture ratings and reduce print coverage to “meaningless dribble,” in the words of one publisher.

Can there be a fix? Mark Thompson, the new CNN chief who has seen half his linear audience disappear, optimistically promises a digital upheaval not only in election coverage but beyond.

On the print side, however, chaos prevails: The Los Angeles Times has lost its top editors and roughly half of its news staff and sold off the San Diego Union-Tribune. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Sun, once also owned by the Times, has been acquired by Sinclair, a TV station behemoth whose leader, David Smith,...

‘The Wire’ Creator David Simon Laments After Baltimore Sun Sold to Sinclair TV Chairman
Image
In a holiday weekend surprise, The Baltimore Sun was sold by the investment firm Alden Global Capital to David Smith, the chairman of local TV station giant Sinclair Broadcast Group.

The Sun broke the news Monday, also revealing that Smith is joined in the venture by Armstrong Williams, a conservative political commentator who hosts a program syndicated on Sinclair’s 185 TV stations.

News of the sale sparked immediate interest in a reaction from David Simon, creator of the acclaimed HBO series The Wire. Simon spent years working as a journalist at the Sun, and made a fictional version of the newspaper a focal point of season five of the series.

“What is left to say about American newspapering?” Simon said on X, afyter being tagged by the sportswriter and political pundit Charles Pierce.

“Everyone who is in within the sound of an honest Bawlamer accent needs to subscribe to the @BaltimoreBanner right fucking now.

Avalanche at Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Leaves One Person Dead, Another Injured
Image
An avalanche roared through a section of expert trails at a California ski resort near Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring another, as a major storm with snow and gusty winds moved into the region, authorities said.

The avalanche prompted Palisades Tahoe to close 30 minutes after it opened, and search crews combed the area to see if anyone was injured or trapped.

Sgt. David Smith, a spokesperson for the Placer County sheriff, said hours later that one person, a male, died and another person sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He said nobody else was missing.

The avalanche occurred around 9:30 a.m. on steep slopes under the KT-22 lift, which serves “black diamond” runs for skilled skiers and snowboarders. Palisades Tahoe said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that both sides of the mountain at the resort would be closed for the rest of the day.

The avalanche...

Where Is Jho Low? Jailed Malaysian Leader Najib Razak Questioned in 1Mdb Scandal Doc Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
It’s been seven years since the Justice Department filed the largest forfeiture complaint in U.S. history, asserting that billions had been stolen from Malaysia’s 1Mdb sovereign wealth fund and spent in gratuitous fashion around the world — on penthouse apartments in New York, vast mansions in the most exclusive neighborhoods of Los Angeles, private jets, superyachts, A-list parties, Vegas gambling trips, artworks and even forays into Hollywood with the financing of The Wolf of Wall Street.

While efforts have been made to seize the assets acquired with the stolen loot — and there have been seismic anti-corruption trials in Kuala Lumpur — the man accused of being the mastermind of the 1Mdb scandal, the flamboyant Malaysian businessman Jho Low, is still a fugitive. Many believe the individual, considered the most-wanted “white-collared criminal” on the planet, is in China, reportedly under house arrest in Shanghai.

In the new documentary Man on the Run,...

Diamond Sports Group Files Suit Against Parent Company Sinclair Broadcasting in Fight to Remain Solvent During Bankruptcy
Image
It has been a difficult year for Diamond Sports Group (Dsg), not only did the broadcaster officially file for bankruptcy protection in March, but since then, it has forfeited the rights to broadcast San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks games and is increasingly raising the ire of Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred who would like to see his league take over all of the rights held by the embattled regional sports network (Rsn) provider.

While Dsg has been going through the process of trying to establish a new sustainable — and eventually profitable —business model, it has filed multiple motions and petitions in court, but it’s the latest filing that might be the most surprising.

NextTV is reporting that on Wednesday, paperwork was filed in the Houston bankruptcy court overseeing the proceedings that indicate that Dsg is suing its parent company Sinclair Broadcast Group (Sbg) and multiple members of its executive team.

The police chief in Rochester, New York, has revoked the entertainment license of the venue where two people were killed during a crowd surge at a GloRilla concert Sunday.

The Rochester Police Department’s Licensing Unit was scheduled to meet with the owner of the Main Street Armory Wednesday in the aftermath of the incident, where false reports of gunfire resulted in a stampede within the venue already known locally as a “death trap.”

However, when the venue’s owner didn’t show up for the meeting, Rochester police immediately...

Two Killed After GloRilla Concert Stampede In Rochester, N.Y.
Image
After rumors of gunshots spread through the crowd of a GloRilla concert in Rochester, N.Y., a stampede occurred, resulting in two killed, one severely wounded and seven with non-life-threatening injuries.

In a news conference on Monday, Chief David Smith of the Rochester Police Department said that the stampede began after a performance by rap artist GloRilla around 11 p.m.

“We are hearing many reports of potential causes, including crowd size, shots fired, pepper spray and more,” Smith said. “Preliminary reports from people at the scene indicate that these injuries were caused from being trampled. We do not have any evidence of gunshots being fired or anyone being shot or stabbed.”

The two deceased victims were identified as Rhondesia Belton, 33, and Brandy Miller, 35. The identity of the third victim in critical condition has not yet been released.

Stampede At GloRilla Concert In New York Leaves 2 Dead, Several Injured
Image
Two women are dead and several others are injured after being trampled Sunday night following GloRilla’s concert at the Main Street Armory in Rochester, New York.

According to multiple reports, police Monday afternoon identified one woman killed by the stampede of concert-goers as Rhondesia Belton, 33, of Buffalo. The second woman who died was said to have been 35.

Just after 11:00 p.m. Sunday, concert-goers were leaving the venue following the show, which featured musicians GloRilla and Finesse2Tymes, when, per Rochester Police Chief David Smith, the crowd started to surge and rush toward the exit. There were reports of individuals hearing what they believed to be gunshots inside the venue, “causing the crowd to panic,” he said.

Smith said there was no evidence that anyone fired a gun inside the venue, or that anyone at the venue was shot or stabbed. The injuries, Smith said, “were caused from being trampled.

Walt Disney Archives Director Becky Cline Takes Us Into The Disney Vault For Disney100: The Exhibition [Exclusive Interview]
Image
When I was a kid, I remember hearing about the Disney Vault. Every once in a while, movies and shows would be brought in and out of this vault, apparently for special occasions. But this was very much a marketing tool to drum up the popularity of classic productions from The Walt Disney Company. There wasn't a literal vault where these things were kept ... right?

Well, in a way, there actually is a "Disney Vault." The Walt Disney Archives is an initiative that was started by Roy O. Disney in 1970 in order to collect and preserve the legacy of the company started by his brother. Over 50 years later, this archive (largely due to the groundwork laid by original Disney archivist Dave Smith) has assembled integral pieces of history from the House of Mouse's existence like props, costumes, and documents and ensures that they're kept safe and intact for future generations to enjoy.

Below Deck Med Season 7 Cast Members That Should Return for Season 8
Image
Now that Below Deck Mediterranean season 7 has come to an end, it's time to look ahead to season 8 and hope for some cast members to return. The crew of superyacht Home had to deal with its fair share of difficult guests, but it was the drama among themselves that made the show what it is. With some of the interpersonal dynamics getting harder and harder to watch, it seems like some fans are glad Below Deck Med is over.

The crew of Below Deck Mediterranean is led by Captain Sandy Yawn, and she has become a staple of the series for many seasons. However, the interior crew, made up of Natasha “Tash” Webb, Kyle Vilijoen, Natalya Scudder, and Chef Dave White are all new to the franchise and suffered the most. The exterior crew included Raygun Tyler, who was fired early in the season, Storm Smith, who promoted to bosun after Raygun left,...

Choir Boys Have A Viral Moment While Performing At Queen Elizabeth II’s Funeral
Image
The Choir of Westminster Abbey had quite a moment in the spotlight during Monday’s state funeral service for Queen Elizabeth II, with one choir boy in particular capturing hearts across social media.

As the ensemble sang hymns and songs throughout the duration of the ceremony, viewers took note of a young singer with curly red hair who delivered a star-worthy performance filled with passion, movement and expression.

Dubbed by some as the “Mvp” of the funeral, the boy was praised for his earnest emotion — and Twitter just couldn’t get enough.

I know it’s all about the queen but the star of this funeral so far has been the overly dramatic redheaded choirboy who apparently has never brushed his hair

One Of Mary Poppins' Most Notable Props Was Almost Lost To History
Image
August 2022 marks the 58th anniversary of Walt Disney's "Mary Poppins." Featuring Julie Andrews as the titular nanny from the beloved P.L. Travers book series, the critically acclaimed live-action/animated hybrid became the highest-grossing movie of 1964 and was the only Walt Disney Studios film to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards during the founder's lifetime.

However, like many films of that era and prior, there aren't many pieces of screen used memorabilia left to display and share with the adoring public. Those involved in the productions at the time viewed such items as "just props" to be disposed of when cameras stopped rolling. That's why Roy O. Disney founded the Walt Disney Archives in 1970, with the goal of collecting, preserving, and making props available not just for research but so future generations could enjoy them. Luckily, when it comes to the practically perfect Poppins, some people worked hard...

Trolls World Tour Turns a Bigger Profit Streaming on VOD Than Original Did in Theaters
Justin Timberlake, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Kenan Thompson, George Clinton, Kelly Clarkson, Gustavo Dudamel, Rachel Bloom, and Anthony Ramos in Les Trolls 2 : Tournée mondiale (2020)
Trolls World Tour was the first major studio release to skip theaters following the shutdown and head straight to digital platforms. Universal Pictures opted to release the highly-anticipated sequel on VOD, charging a premium for people to rent it and watch it at home. That business model, as it turns out, is incredibly lucrative, as the sequel has already earned more for the studio than the original did after five months in theaters.

Universal recently revealed that Trolls World Tour was rented 5 million times, meaning it took in $100 million. The studio opted to charge $19.99 for a 48-hour rental, which was also done with movies such as The Invisible Man, The Hunt and Emma, which had stunted theatrical windows before the shutdown kicked in. As such, it's said the studio has cleared more than $77 million in revenue. It's said that the studio keeps roughly 80 percent of the rental prices, which is...

‘Trolls World Tour’ Review
Anna Kendrick at an event for In the Air (2009)
Stars: Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Rachel Bloom, James Corden, Ron Funches, Kelly Clarkson, Anderson Paak, Sam Rockwell, George Clinton, Mary J. Blige | Written by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger | Directed by Walt Dohrn, David P. Smith

Due to the Covid-19 crisis gripping the world, Trolls World Tour, the sequel to the 2016 Trolls film, was originally scheduled to be in theaters on April 10, but instead was released on Video on Demand as a 48-hour rental. It’s a chance the studio had to take, unless they wanted to delay releasing the film in theaters several months from now when movie theaters reopen. It’s also the only wide release film in the last month and since it’s a family film, should do quite well in terms of rental sales.

Disclaimer! The original Trolls is one of my least favorite animated films, along with Planes and the Emoji Movie, so my expectations...

Universal says 'Trolls World Tour' scored biggest digital debut in history
Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Studio released on Friday and in 21 drive-in theatres in North America.

Universal Pictures said on Monday (13) that DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour, the family tentpole it controversially opted to release in the home without a theatrical release when the coronavirus pandemic forced cinemas to close, has delivered the biggest digital launch in history.

At time of writing the claim could not be verified as the studio did not release numbers and home entertainment sales are not normally made public.

Universal released the film on Friday (10), the date it had been scheduled to open in theatres. It opened in the...

Did “Trolls World Tour” Just Change The Way We’re Going To Be Watching New Release Movies?
Les Trolls (2016)
This weekend may end up being an incredibly important one in the history of cinema. Why, you ask? Well, Trolls World Tour opted to skip a theatrical release entirely, debuting as a rental in homes. For years, theaters have fought the day and date model, suggesting it could be an end to the cinematic experience. That’s led to some of their battles with Netflix, etc, as streaming services make inroads into the film world. Today, we can look a bit into whether this movie is truly the canary in the coal mine… For those unaware, the film is a sequel to the surprise hit (and Academy Award nominee) Trolls. Here is the storyline, according to IMDb: “Poppy and Branch discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop and Rock.

Bummed-out kids acutely feel the pain of quarantine, so kudos to DreamWorks Animation for letting the fun-and-song-filled fluffball known as Trolls World Tour become the first major studio release intended for theaters to go directly to Video on Demand. Trolls. Ok, it’s not nearly as good a time, feeling more dutiful than dazzling. Still, grownups won’t need to resort to controlled substances to share the experience without climbing walls, though the nonstop, piñata-like explosions of noise and color are mindful of an acid trip. Deep thanks to co-directors...

Trolls World Tour Music Video Throws a Living Room Dance Party with the Cast
Les Trolls (2016)
As Trolls World Tour arrives digitally, a new music video for Don't Slack from the movie's official soundtrack has been released. The song comes from Anderson .Paak and Justin Timberlake, who are both members of the cast. Anna Kendrick, who returns from the first movie, features in the video and has herself a timely living room dance party. This is the second song from the soundtrack released that features Timberlake, who previously collaborated on The Other Side with Sza.

The video sees Anna Kendrick waking up and trying to go about her daily routine, which is interrupted by the sounds of Anderson .Paak and Justin Timberlake. Eventually, Kendrick succumbs to the rhythm of Don't Slack and winds up dancing around in her pajamas. Some of the characters from the animated sequel pop up as well. Whether or not this can become the hit that Can't Stop the Feeling was as...

Les Trolls (2016)
‘Trolls World Tour’ Film Review: Animated Saga Expands Its Musical Universe in a Safe But Sprightly Sequel
Les Trolls (2016)
Four years ago, with its colorful array of cute, bubbly, and pop-musically-inclined characters, “Trolls” became a surprise toy-turned-family-movie blockbuster, bolstered by an earworm of a soundtrack — kindergarteners everywhere knew every syllable of voice actor and music producer Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” — that kept the film alive months after its theatrical debut.

Now “Trolls World Tour” takes the stage, and while it doesn’t quite hit the same high notes as its predecessor, the home-field advantage of being one of the first theatrical releases to be released day-and-date on-demand amid the coronavirus pandemic will bring some much-needed entertainment and lightness to families everywhere.

When rocker Queen Barb (voiced by Rachel Bloom) descends on the land of the “Techno” trolls, she makes her plans immediately known: “We’re all going to be one nation of Trolls — under rock!” she vows, as she plots to force every troll community to convert to rock trolls.

‘Trolls World Tour’: Film Review
Justin Timberlake, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Kenan Thompson, George Clinton, Kelly Clarkson, Gustavo Dudamel, Rachel Bloom, and Anthony Ramos in Les Trolls 2 : Tournée mondiale (2020)
As the first major Hollywood movie — and, in fact, the only one — since the outbreak of the coronavirus to bow out of its scheduled theatrical release and reposition itself on a home-viewing platform, “Trolls World Tour” has the chance to be a bigger event than it might have otherwise. Or maybe a smaller one. (Or maybe both at once.) What’s undeniable is that the film now stands, in a way that no one was ever planning on, as the one and only new mainstream commercial release that movie-starved audiences will get a chance to see in April.

That said, there may be less significance to its changed circumstances than you might think. When Universal first announced that its sequel to “Trolls” would bypass theaters altogether, some observers took it as the proverbial crack in the theatrical window they’d been waiting for — the first domino to fall in an increasingly tense cold war,...

New Trolls World Tour Trailer Unites the Trolls to Save All Music
Daniel Craig in Mourir peut attendre (2021)
Earlier in the week, Universal and MGM made the announcement that No Time to Die was being delayed until November due to health concerns around the globe. ‘Trolls World Tour’ Fills Easter Void Left By ‘No Time To Die’
Daniel Craig in Mourir peut attendre (2021)
Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls World Tour is going where No Time to Die vacated: April 10. Originally the Dwa pic, released via Universal, was to go April 17.

This is the first major studio move in the wake of MGM/Eon/Universal moving the global day and date release of the 25th 007 pic this morning, which Deadline exclusively broke. It also will ease fears among exhibition. While studios can sustain and weather macro shifts in their movie re-dates, having consistent product is the bread and butter for theaters. The Dwa sequel is also sneaking for exhibitors at the studio-theater chain confab Cinemacon at the end of March.

This is great sigh of relief to distribution in the wake of No Time to Die‘s move to Thanksgiving. Easter has become a very rich weekend for movies with the 2015 and 2016 holidays delivering back-to-back record openings with Uni’s Furious 7 ($161.2M) and Warner Bros.
