Yes, after a six-month time jump following her immediate recovery, Mags is part of the same family as Bash and his sister Amira (Sirena Gulamgaus). She’s also returning to work. Why do Mags and Bash think they can make a relationship work this time? “I think they’ve had enough of back and forth to know what it means to lose one another. Sometimes you realize when you go through it, the person you love and you lose, you’re just like, life is not the same without that person,” Laurence Leboeuf tells TV Insider. “And I think if you do come back and the timing...

Angel Studios Dates Syrian Refugee Crisis Drama ‘The Strangers’ Case’ For Year End
Image
Exclusive: Angels Studios has set a limited theatrical release on Dec. 25 with January expansion for Brandt Andersen’s feature drama The Strangers’ Case.

The title, which made its world premiere at the 2024 Berlinale, was curated by the studio’s Angel Guild of 1.1M members.

Inspired by Andersen’s Oscar-shortlisted 2020 short film Refugee (2020), The Strangers’ Case unfolds through a Shakespearean lens, drawing its title from a poignant speech in Sir Thomas More defending displaced peoples. Set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War, the film follows a pediatric surgeon, Amira (Yasmine Al Massri), and her daughter, whose lives intertwine with five families across four continents in a chain reaction of tragedy, resilience, and hope. The ensemble cast includes Omar Sy, Yahya Mahayni, Ziad Bakri, Constantine Markoulakis, and Jason Beghe.

The Strangers’ Case won the Amnesty International Film Award. Andersen, who wrote and directed the movie, is also a seasoned producer and activist who has worked extensively with refugees in Syria, Jordan, and beyond. The movie features Syrian extras who have faced the Aegean crossing depicted in the story. To date, the film has received over 50 Festival awards.

“Stories that amplify light like The Strangers’ Case are for global mainstream audiences,” said Jared Geesey, Chief Distribution Officer at Angel. “Brandt Andersen’s vision to inspire compassion and understanding resonated with the Angel Guild, and we’re thrilled to bring this masterpiece to our audience.”

“I am honored and grateful to partner with Angel to share The Strangers’ Case with a global audience,” said Andersen in a statement. “I cannot wait for everyone to see the hard work of this amazing cast and crew on the big screen. This film is deeply personal, and I believe its message of shared humanity is more important now than ever.”

The Angel Guild counts a community of over 1.1M members from more than 170 countries who cleared The Strangers’ Case for distribution.

Have you ever looked into someone’s eyes and wondered what their story might be? Director Leve Kühl has and in Through My Eyes, his Unhcr Hope Away from Home campaign film, audiences are invited to see the world through the perspective of Amira, a woman fleeing her homeland. Using kinetic, point of view camerawork, alongside a transportive soundscape, we are thrown directly into the chaos of an unnamed war-torn land, aligning viewers with the pain and hardship of displacement and the remarkable strength of those who endure it. This is a short that harnesses film’s unique ability to educate through immersion, pleading for us to readjust our perspective of the refugee label and to see the humans behind the stories not just as humans who have relocated but humans with feelings, humans with families and humans with futures. 'Everything Is Good': FBI Star Shares Positive Update on Character Missing From the Series Since 2021
Image
FBI star Zeeko Zaki has addressed the likelihood the show will bring back his character Omar Adom "Oa" Zidan's sister Amira. Cynthia Hamidi originally played Amira in Season 1 of the CBS procedural.

Viewers learned early in FBI's run that, since the Zidan children lost their father at a young age, they developed a dysfunctional relationship. Oa admitted he and Amira had a strained relationship as adults because he'd acted more like a father than a brother to her while growing up.

FBI Star Addresses Possible Return of Oa's Sister Amira

Speaking to TVLine, Zaki revealed that, while there are no plans yet for Amira to return, there is a reference to the character "in the episode we’re filming now." The actor wouldn't give away the context of the reference, but he insisted "everything is good" with Amira.

Amira first appeared in the FBI season one episode "A New Dawn,...

This Day That Year: Vicky Kaushal’s Little-known Knock-Out Performance
Image
In this installment of Subhash K Jha’s terrific This Day That Year series, he takes a look back at one of Vicky Kaushal’s knock-out performances.

Long before Chhaava, Vicky Kaushal scored high marks in a little-known film. Zubaan, which was released on March 4, 2016, saw Kaushal play what could be considered the antithesis of Chhaava.

For those who thought Vicky Kaushal’s debut in Masaan was just a one-off flash-in-the-pan affair, Zubaan was an eye-opener.

Kaushal plays Dilsher, the waylaid Sikh boy from Gurdaspur who only wants to be successful in ways that we normally describe as success. So he schemes his way into the heart, mind, home, and property of a business tycoon Sikand and ends up getting what he thinks he wants.

From here onwards, first-time director Mozez Singh charts Dilsher’s descent into a self-serving opportunism and then his sudden swerve into redemption. This journey back...

The David and Goliath tale gets a new epic retelling in the trailer for Prime Video’s House of David
Image
It’s perhaps the greatest underdog story next to Rocky. Heck, it’s used as a phrase to describe a match-up that seems so unevenly matched. The David and Goliath tale is one of the most popular stories in the Bible. It tells of a normal man who went up against the fiercest warrior in the land in the biggest size difference imaginable. Amazon’s House of David is a series that will retell the story in eight epic episodes. Three episodes will premiere on February 27, with one episode weekly thereafter. The trailer has just been released.

The official description reads,

“House Of David tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely,...

His life revolves around the enticing allure of social media stardom, where likes and subscribers are the currency of worth. The opposing settings—the bustling, smoke-filled bar and the lonely area that becomes Adi’s grave—reflect the duality of his existence. While the stark and lonely field serves as a chilling reminder of the loneliness that frequently comes with the search for online validation,...

Ziad Abaza
A braggart absorbed in writing his own online legend with feats of strength can’t carry off being shoved underground for a spiritual experience

Why Transplant Season 4 Was The Show's Last, According To The Showrunner
Image
Transplant season 4 is the official end to the Canadian medical drama, but American audiences will have to wait to watch the show. A highly underrated TV procedural, Transplant is a 2020 Canadian medical drama that follows Dr. Bashir "Bash" Hamed (Hamza Haq), a Syrian Civil War refugee and the newest resident at York Memorial Hospital. Despite his long career in medicine, issues with foreign conversions of his credentials force him to start at the lowest rungs of the hospital where he faces all the problems a new workplace and home can bring.

The show first premiered in February 2020 on CTV, with seasons two, three, and four coming over the next few years. It's an underrated medical drama that deserves more attention both for its hospital plotlines and for centering a Syrian character in the show. Bel-Air Season 3 Puts a Mature Spin on The Fresh Prince's Biggest Feuds

Quick Links Bel-Air Season 3 Reinterprets Old Romantic Problems Bel-Air Season 3 Reworks Fresh Prince's Darker Arguments

The following contains spoilers for Bel-Air, Season 3, Episode 10, "Save the Best for Last," which debuted Sept. 5 on Peacock.

One of the most interesting aspects of Peacock's Bel-Air is how it reinterprets the original series Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Reimaginings -- along with reboots -- are a fad right now. Luckily, this Peacock series hasn't botched it the way Rupert Sanders' The Crow did.

Bel-Air understands how to balance drama, comedy and action, making the show more adaptable. By the time the third season wraps, it's very clear that the new TV series knows how to reinvent nostalgia, especially regarding the iconic feuds of old. It plays to modern audiences with a mature creative approach, crafting relatable stories to appeal to people from all walks of life.

‘The Daily Show’ at the DNC: Why the Show Is More Nimble Than Ever Ahead of Jon Stewart’s Live Episode
Image
The last time “The Daily Show” was physically at the Democratic National Convention was in 2016 — two presidents, a global pandemic and many hosts ago. So going into the DNC this week, head writer Dan Amira felt a bit like he was “learning it all over again.” But few shows on television are better suited to adapt on the fly than Comedy Central’s late night gem.

“We’ve gotten very used to adjusting. I don’t think we’ve had a normal period at ‘The Daily Show’ for quite a while now,” Amira said.

Starting in 2020, the series filmed from Trevor Noah’s home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That was followed by a period when the show returned without a studio audience before last year’s unconventional season. In the wake of Noah’s departure as host, “The Daily Show” tried out new guest hosts weekly, a challenge that required the writers,...

Anticipation was high for “Bel-Air” two years ago, the dramatic flip of the beloved classic comedy “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Kansas City native Morgan Cooper’s re-imagining of the pop culture fixture started as a fan film he uploaded to YouTube in 2019 that generated so much buzz that Will Smith himself jumped aboard as an executive producer. And the success of the first season, not to mention glowing reviews of the show’s depiction of class tensions — and changes like fresh takes on Hillary as a culinary influencer and Carlton as a struggling, undercover addict — beget a second season and now a third.

But the latest installment takes a somewhat greater departure from the first two seasons. Instead of taking place during the school year, Season 3 takes over the summer, placing Will (Jabari Banks) and Carlton (Olly Sholotan) in a country club setting that television has typically reserved for young white kids.

Sabri is the star of “Moftaraq Toroq,” the Arabic adaptation of “The Good Wife” that launched in June to top ratings across the Middle East on leading regional network Mbc’s Shahid premium streamer.

The second season of “Finding Ola” is expected to drop later this year.

Below, Sabri speaks to Variety about navigating the “tricky” cultural complexities of transposing the U.

‘The Strangers’ Case’ Review: Omar Sy in an Intense Refugee Drama That Preaches a Bit More Than It Practices
Image
The line between art and activism is blurred — often to a fault — in The Strangers’ Case, a visceral migrant drama that plays less as a movie with a message than as a message with a movie.

Written and directed by Brandt Andersen, an executive producer (American Made, Everest), former NBA G League franchise owner and international activist, the film follows several characters whose lives are upended by the Syrian Civil War, switching points of view as it moves from the grim battlegrounds of Aleppo to the gates of Europe.

It can be an intense experience to sit through, and Andersen doesn’t hold back on the gruesome violence and nonstop tragedy many migrants suffered during the conflict — and continue to suffer to this day. But that doesn’t always make for great drama, nor for characters who go deep enough, resulting in a well-meaning film that feels half like a globetrotting Hollywood thriller,...

Leap: Moon Knight’s Mohamed Diab to direct sci-fi thriller
Image
Director Mohamed Diab got started working on dramas, making his feature debut with the 2010 film Cairo 678, about “three women and their search for justice from the daily plight of sexual harassment in Egypt.” That was followed by the 2016 film Clash, which takes place entirely inside a police van and shows what happens when “a number of detainees from different political and social backgrounds are brought together by fate”. In 2021, he made Amira, which showed that a “girl’s world is turned upside down when she learns the man she grew up idolizing is not her real father.” Then he shifted gears, directing four of the six episodes that made up the Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knight. And now Deadline reports that Diab has signed on to direct a sci-fi thriller called Leap.

Scripted by Source Code writer Ben Ripley and produced by The Picture Company, Leap is “a high...

‘Transplant’ Boss: Bash & Amira Conflict ‘Challenges Him Emotionally in a Volatile Time’
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Transplant Season 3 Episode 6 “Audition.”] Amira (Sirena Gulamgaus) knows what will make her happy — singing — but unfortunately, not only are she and Bash (Hamza Haq) not on the same page about that, but the latest Transplant episode also ends with a major change for the siblings. It begins with a video of Amira practicing for her audition, but Bash is not happy about his sister copying his digital signature for a school application without telling him. But Amira, as she explains when she stops by the hospital, thought it was worth the risk. “No screens, no sleepovers, no dance,” he decides, and she points out that that “no joy” affects him, too: “No more staying over at your secret girlfriend’s house when I’m out.” Bash tells her he’s withdrawing her application. “I have to,” he explains. “What you did was fraud. I passed my citizenship exam, but I...

Transplant Season 3 Episode 6 Review: Audition
Transplant (2020)
Things are coming to a head at York Memorial Hospital's emergency department.

There were too many over-stressed staffers on Transplant Season 3 Episode 6.

In some cases, they suffered from the effects of Dr. Devi's patient-centric approach, of an institution implementing changes without the required resources.

Others were bringing their problems into the Ed, affecting their performance.

Neeta means well with her patient-friendly policies, and she was allowed to prove that her academic concept could work in the real world.

More of the blame should rest on the hospital's administrators, who hired her to do the impossible.

A certain amount of wait time for treatment is integral to Canada's public healthcare system.

York's cynical administrators figured that a more content patient would be less likely to sue in the event of a problematic result.

Now, all Devi has to do is to install her system only by reallocating existing resources.

Mohamed Diab
‘Leap’ – ‘Moon Knight’ Director to Take on Time Loop Sci-fi Thriller
Mohamed Diab
Director Mohamed Diab is no stranger to mind-bending sci-fi, having helmed last year’s Marvel series “Moon Knight.” Deadline reports that the filmmaker will next tackle Leap, a high concept thriller that traps passengers of a high speed train in a time loop.

The sci-fi thriller is penned by writer Ben Ripley and produced by The Picture Company.

Leap is “set aboard the Eurostar train which runs high-speed between London and Paris. Leap is a high-concept action-thriller with a grounded sci-fi idea at the center. The story follows a daring rescue mission to save one of the train’s passengers, who is trapped onboard in a never-ending time loop.”

Diab broke out last year on Disney+ series “Moon Knight,” which centered on Oscar Isaac’s character, “an ex-Marine turned mercenary whose multiple alter egos allow him to better fight crime.” The split personalities integral to the series demonstrates that Diab...

Transplant Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Multiple Choice
Transplant (2020)
It's a time of change at York Memorial Hospital, and that's not working out for much of the staff.

Most doctors labored to find their footing on Transplant Season 3 Episode 4, whether at work or in their private lives.

Not even Dr. Neeta Devi, the new Emerg director who replaced the beloved Dr. Jed Bishop, has been spared from this soul searching.

Neeta was hired to implement a patient-centric philosophy in the department to make the process more tolerable.

However, she's quickly learning what sounds good in an academic paper can be challenging to sell in a real hospital.

Even Dr. Neil Olsen, the arrogant medical director (is that phrase redundant?) who hired Neeta, backs her policy only as long as it doesn't inconvenience him.

Neeta is having to go along to get along. An example of this was, at the insistence of Dr. Novak and Dr. Singh, allowing Bash to...

Transplant Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Hospital Beige
Transplant (2020)
The repercussions of Dr. Bishop's departure are still being felt at York Memorial Hospital.

As a result, no one was very comfortable in either their professional or their personal lives on Transplant Season 3 Episode 3

It would be easy to blame everything on Dr. Devi, who has been brought in to find and fix the problems within the Emergency Department.

Devi feels pressure to make changes quickly without taking sufficient time to observe and research the current situation.

She admitted to her partner on Transplant Season 3 Episode 2 that she feared she had made a mistake in uprooting her family and moving to Toronto.

The staff has been resistant to her suggestions to implement patient-driven care. What they've had wasn't perfect, but at least it was familiar.

Also, Devi isn't the paternal figure Bishop was, not by a long shot. She's approachable, all right, but she wants what she wants...
