Wonder spin-off White Bird is now streaming on Amazon Prime in the UK following some lengthy delays.

Released in 2017 and based on the novel by Rj Palacio, Wonder told the inspiring story of August Pullman, a boy with Treacher Collins Syndrome, which causes deformities of the face, and his attempts to fit it at high school. Written and directed by Perks Of Being A Wallflower scribe Stephen Chbosky and starring Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, the film did good business, taking over $300 million on a $20 million budget.

This brings us to White Bird, not a direct sequel but a story set in the same universe, based on the graphic novel novel by Palacio, which was due to be released late last year. Bryce Gheisar played bully Julian in Wonder, and he reprises the role as we see what happened to him after being expelled for his horrific bullying of August.

Ariella Glaser will star in the upcoming mystery thriller Flavia, an adaptation of Alan Bradley’s bestselling book series about a young investigator who solves a difficult family mystery. Martin Freeman, Jonathan Pryce, and Toby Jones will front the film’s ensemble cast.

The plot revolves around an 11-year-old protagonist who discovers a dead body at her family’s dilapidated British manor house and becomes involved in a murder inquiry targeting her father. Glaser will play Ophelia de Luce, the sister of the main character played by Molly Belle Wright.

Veteran filmmaker Bharat Nalluri will bring the story to life, and Susan Coyne—known for her work on “Daisy Jones and the Six”will handle the screenplay. Exclusive: White Bird star Ariella Glaser has boarded Flavia, the Martin Freeman-starring adventure movie about an 11-year-old detective.

Glaser stars as Ophelia de Luce, the sister of the movie’s protagonist, who is played by Molly Belle Wright. Freeman, Jonathan Pryce and Toby Jones are also aboard.

Flavia is based on the Alan Bradley series of books centered on the pre-teen detective. White Bird, a follow-up to 2017's Wonder, has set a digital release date. Directed by Marc Forster, the film expands the Wonder universe, which grossed $315 million globally. While Wonder focused on Auggie Pullman's challenges with Treacher Collins syndrome in a middle school setting, White Bird shifts to a historical narrative centered on Auggie's bully, Julian (played by Bryce Gheisar), who visits his grandmother (Helen Mirren) in France following his expulsion from school and learns of her survival story during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II.

After a limited theatrical run earlier this month, the digital release on VOD offers White Bird a renewed opportunity to connect with home audiences. These are the recollections of an aging grandmother trying to teach her grandson lessons about kindness. They’re also stories of survival, and Forster, with Dp Matthias Königswieser, films them in a way that avoids the trappings of sentimentality.

In them, the German-Swiss helmer behind Monster’s Ball, Quantum of Solace and more recently A Man Called Otto reaches for a specificity and a clear-eyed honesty that liberates parts of this young adult film from narrative contrivance. White Bird, the Marc Forster-directed film adaptation of author R. J. Palacio’s sequel/prequel to her worldwide hit book and 2017 movie Wonder, has taken a long and circuitous route to finally getting a North American release. Frustrating as it has been, this is a film that is well worth the wait and perhaps more timely now than ever.

Shot in the Czech Republic in February 2021, White Bird was initially set as a wide release in September 2022, delayed a month to October then taken off Lionsgate’s release schedule entirely before either of those dates came around. It was then scheduled for an August 2023 opening, but last year’s SAG strike meant another delay until it was finally set several months ago for its October 4 release this Friday.

There is a particular scene in White Bird that made me gasp out loud. The scene was not violent; however, watching a teacher insist on chaperoning the Jewish children pulled from her class because they are her responsibility felt like the equivalent of me yelling out during a horror film, “Don’t go in there!”

You cannot argue against how effective White Bird is in terms of engagement. Watching teachers, priests, and neighbors risk, and at times outright sacrifice, themselves to protect Jewish children is compelling, if not heartbreaking. Disturbingly, this has practically become a Hollywood trope.

There are several scenes like the one I described above. Saviors appear on the screen and vanish from sight, never to be seen again. That’s what makes Marc Forster’s White Bird haunting at times—kindness is an enduring theme, but it comes at the cost of one’s life.

Living Links has also partnered with the Shoah Foundation, which records, preserves and shares the testimonies of Holocaust survivors, to release a viewing guide and related testimony-based classroom resources for educators, students, and the general public to extend the learning opportunities raised by “White Bird” in support of the film’s theatrical release.

Cassandra Freeman (Bel-Air), Tika Sumpter (Sonic the Hedgehog) and Michaela Watkins (Thanks for Sharing) have joined the “Geena & Friends” program taking place at the upcoming Bentonville Film Festival in Arkansas.

The program, led by Geena Davis and moderated by The Hollywood Reporter contributing editor Stacey Wilson Hunt, takes a unique spin on traditional comedic narratives by reimagining them with an all-female or gender-non-conforming cast. The event is set for June 14 at the Thaden Theater in Bentonville.

Marc Forster has frequently demonstrated an ability to tastefully moderate the more manipulative or saccharine aspects of popular but somewhat blunt-edged source material, in bestseller screen translations like “The Kite Runner” and “A Man Called Otto.” That knack comes in handy once more with “White Bird,” a graceful adaptation of a YA graphic novel by R.J. Palacio. A “Wonder story” tangentially related to 2012’s “Wonder,” it may get some boost from the connection to that book’s successful 2017 film version with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.

A new trailer for the upcoming war-drama “White Bird”, starring Helen Mirren, has been unveiled, nearly one year after Lionsgate debuted the official trailer.

In the new two-minute clip, Mirren recounts stories from her character’s dark childhood in Nazi-occupied France, including how she fell in love with a boy who was made fun of in school and dubbed a “freak,” in order to teach her grandson a lesson about kindness.

Participant has boarded Lionsgate and Mandeville Films’ White Bird: A Wonder Story, the companion film to 2017’s hit $306M-plus grossing YA feature Wonder, as EP and co-financier.

As we first told you, Marc Forster is directing White Bird, which is currently in production. The screenplay adaptation of R.J. Palacio’s book is by Mark Bomback. Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, who produced Wonder, are also producing the new film, along with Palacio. The film stars Golden Globe winner Gillian Anderson, Oscar winner Helen Mirren, Ariella Glaser, Orlando Schwerdt, and reprising his role from Wonder is Bryce Gheisar.

Participant was a co-financier and EP on Wonder as well. White Bird: A Wonder Story is being made in association with Forster’s production company 2DUX2; the filmmaker’s partner, Renée Wolfe, is also an EP. .

Helen Mirren has signed on to star in Lionsgate’s “White Bird: A Wonder Story,” a spinoff of the hit 2017 film that starred Jacob Tremblay as a boy with a rare facial deformity.

“White Bird” also stars Gillian Anderson and will be directed by “Christopher Robin” filmmaker Marc Forster.
