One of the UK’s oldest working cinemas, the Electric Birmingham, has shut, with the last film screening listed as yesterday (February 29).
The closure has been confirmed on the cinema’s official website. The cinema dates back to 1909, and was built in a converted taxi rank in Station Street.
Kevin Markwick bought the cinema in 2021, with his daughter Katie Markwick running it. He did not respond to Screen’s request for comment at time of publication. Markwick also owns the The Picture House Uckfield in Sussex.
The Electric was previously owned by Tom Lawes, who closed the cinema during the first March 2020 Covid lockdown.

During the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, attendees became enamored with the 33-foot-tall mechanical bull sculpture that stole the show during the opening ceremonies. Now, thousands have voted to have the bull named after Ozzy Osbourne.
The bull was initially scheduled to be dismantled following the games. But it was such a crowd pleaser, a petition to keep the sculpture intact generated over 10,000 signatures, and now the bull will stand under the atrium of the Birmingham New Street railway station.
After it was announced that the sculpture would live on, a public vote was held to give it a formal name. Over 28,000 votes were cast, with “Ozzy” sweeping over 70 percent of the vote.
It’s a fitting choice considering the singer was raised in the UK city and will forever be linked to the 2022 games after making a rare live appearance alongside Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi to perform “Paranoid” during the closing ceremonies.

New Delhi, Nov 11 (Ians) The Kabaddi World Cup will move out of Asia for the first time with the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom hosting the 2025 edition of the competition, the World Kabaddi Federation (Wkf) announced on Friday.
The UK region will host the sport’s most prestigious global tournament which will feature the world’s best kabaddi players from leading men’s and women’s teams, including India, Iran and Pakistan. The tournament will take place across the West Midlands during the first quarter of 2025.
The news was revealed as part of a West Midlands trade mission to India (November 6-12), led by the region’s Mayor Andy Street and Portfolio Lead for Economy and Innovation at the West Midlands Combined Authority, Cllr Ian Brookfield. The BBC is ramping up its Birmingham operation by moving from the two-decades-old Mailbox site to a new creative quarter in Digbeth.
The move forms part of Director General Tim Davie’s Across the UK plan to better represent the UK’s nations and regions. MasterChef will soon relocate to Digbeth and other local commissions include drama Two Tone from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
The new creative quarter site, which will open in 2026, will be a purpose-built broadcast center that will also house the BBC’s Newsbeat and Asian Network teams.
