by Cláudio Alves

César Vicente in Pain & Glory (2019).

Before Martin Scorsese ignited the internet's fury with his comments about the McU, another master filmmaker had already made headlines with less than complimentary opinions on the matter. Back in April, before he took his glorious Pain & Glory to Cannes, Pedro Almodóvar criticized superhero movies for having no sexuality. According to the Spanish auteur, they are neutered.

When compared against his passionate filmography they are piteously sexless indeed. But so are most movies. Few filmmakers have explored the many permutations of desire as thoroughly as Almodóvar has, usually with a patina of irreverent queerness. From killers in skimpy white briefs to ballets of bulges and sculpted asses, his camera is always ready to lick an actor's body and crystalize them into divinities of wantonness.

You're invited to peruse the director's gallery of beautiful men, starting at the dawn of his...

‘Pain and Glory’ Trailer: Pedro Almodóvar Looks Inward for Meta Drama With Antonio Banderas
Pedro Almodóvar
The Spanish auteur’s finest film in years, Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” is also his most personal, a colorful vivisection of the director’s life and work, his regrets and achievements. No doubt playing a version of the Academy Award-winning director himself, Antonio Banderas stars as Salvador Mallo, a film director in creative crisis who begins experimenting with drugs in the lead-up to a local career retrospective of his work. Banderas won the 2019 Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal, which is the Spanish actor’s most sensitive performance in many years. With the Cannes prize under his belt, Banderas has a strong shot at his first Oscar nomination ever, especially since this is one of Almodóvar’s more accessible efforts.

“Pain and Glory” features several breakouts in the cast, including Asier Etxeandia as Alberto, Salvador’s former onscreen muse who’s now a high-functioning heroin addict.

Sony Pictures to Release Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Pain & Glory’ (Exclusive)
In a break from his Spanish distributor of past years, Warner Bros., Pedro Almodovar has opted to release his latest film “Pain & Glory” in Spain via Sony Pictures Releasing International on March 22, 2019.

“We are delighted and excited that we are releasing “Pain & Glory” in Spain with a whole new team: Sony Pictures in Spain,” said his producing partner and brother Agustin Almodovar of El Deseo.

“After more than 25 years working together in the U.S. under Sony Pictures Classics, both Pedro and myself consider Sony as part of our family; this decision reinforces the bonds we have been developing with Sony for a long time and this can’t be better news for all of us,” he added.

“Pedro Almodóvar is one of the seminal filmmakers of all time,” said Laine Kline, head of Sony Pictures International Productions. “We couldn’t be more delighted that we are releasing his latest work in Spain.
