Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell, its spinoffs and 2020 reboot, Last Comic Standing and many other series, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 88. His family confirmed the news to Deadline but did not provide a cause of death.
Engel exec-produced more than 1,000 hours of TV during a 40-year career, mostly for NBC as part of a long-term partnership. His credits also include scores of episodes of City Guys and Malibu CA — both of which he also created — along with Hang Time, USA High, California Dreams, How to Survive a Marriage and others.
He also wrote more than 100 episodes of City Guys, nearly as many of USA High and 50-plus for Malibu CA.

Last year, we learned that Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg would be re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn. Production began in August, wrapping in October, and the film is aiming for an April 25, 2025 theatrical release. Yesterday, a batch of character posters were unveiled, and those came with the promise that a new trailer would be dropping online today. True to their word, Sony’s Screen Gems has now released that new trailer, and you can check it out in the embed above.
As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, first released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and frenemies who are brought together a remote mountain retreat. With live or die scenarios featuring a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and a long-ago mining cave-in that reverberates into the present day,...

Quick Links Not Changing The Past Is A Part Of The Thrill It’s Okay To Do A Faithful Adaptation The Until Dawn Movie Could Still Be Good
Of the upcoming slate of video game adaptations, the Until Dawn movie was easily one of the most intriguing. First released in 2015, before seeing a quietly-released remake in 2024, Until Dawn is an interactive drama horror game from the horror minds of Supermassive Games. Until Dawn was a surprise hit known for its stunning visuals, a cast that includes Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere, and its frightening good setting and story. Until Dawn was one of the small handful of games perfectly tailor-made for an adaptation.
With the release of the official trailer for the Until Dawn movie, it appears much of that was thrown out the window. Instead of a retelling, the film will feature a cast and story independent of the game.

When it comes to cinematic adaptations of beloved PlayStation games, so far we've enjoyed a mixed bag. HBO's The Last Of Us series ranks among the great TV shows of the millennium thus far; Sony's Uncharted movie with Tom Holland certainly ranks among the films that were released in February 2022; and Neil Blomkamp's Archie Madekwe/Orlando Bloom/David Harbour led Gran Turismo is, well, actually probably a bit better than it gets credit for honestly. And after our first look at David F. Sandberg's take on survival horror game Until Dawn caused no small measure of discourse about how much you can change a game and still keep its title for your movie earlier this week, a new, full trailer for the time loop chiller has just dropped. Check it out below:
Wendigos are in. Ski chalets are still out. But Until Dawn looks... pretty good, actually. Sure,...

Just days after dropping a teaser for its upcoming horror film Until Dawn, Sony Pictures has thrilled fans again by unveiling the official trailer, offering a deeper glimpse into the chilling story and the high-stakes terror that awaits the unsuspecting teens. You can check it out above!
Gamers will recognize this movie right away, as it’s based on the popular 2015 video game of the same name by Supermassive Games. Over the years, we've seen both successful and disappointing horror video game adaptations. While we're hoping that Until Dawn doesn't fall into the latter category, the early trailer suggests it has the potential to deliver the thrilling suspense and terrifying atmosphere that fans of the game expect.
Coming from the same director who brought us the horror films Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out, Until Dawn will not follow the game's original storyline but will instead tell a new story.

“Every night, somebody new is trying to kill us.” The Until Dawn video game gets a time loop twist in the upcoming movie adaptation from Sony Pictures, and the trailer has arrived.
From director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation, Shazam) and writer Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun), Until Dawn arrives in theaters on April 25, 2025.
The upcoming movie will have a similar mechanic to the choose-your-own-adventure style of the video game, a unique way to bring the experience to life on the big screen. We’ve been told not to expect a 1:1 adaptation of the fan favorite video game, but it looks like Sandberg and company made sure their Until Dawn movie has that video game feel to it all the same.
Think Until Dawn meets… The Cabin in the Woods.

Actions have consequences. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Until Dawn,” the live-action adaptation of the popular 2015 PlayStation horror game.
Developed by Supermassive Games, the “Until Dawn” video game follows a group of eight unsuspecting teenagers who convene in a remote cabin a year after two of their friends went missing. Through the utilization of a high-stakes “butterfly effect” mechanic, players make choices that impact later gameplay as they try to dodge masked killers, cannibalistic creatures, and figure out who’s really worth trusting.
The trailer shows the butterfly effect in action as characters gets killed off by different monsters, only to come back to life and repeat the same events with slightly different outcomes each time.

The sun is nearly rising on “Until Dawn.”
The phenomenally popular 2015 horror video game is headed to the big screen, courtesy of “Lights Out” and “Annabelle: Creation” director David F. Sandberg, and you can watch the brand-new trailer below. Might want to keep the lights on, though.
In the film Ella Rubin plays a young woman named Clover whose sister (Maia Mitchell) has mysteriously disappeared. Wouldn’t you know it? This brings Clover and some friends to a mysterious house with an odd, hourglass-type device that will undoubtedly seal their fate. Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Odessa A’zion and Belmont Cameli also star, alongside Peter Stormare, who will reprise his role of Hill from the original videogame.
“The movie has the same tone and the same vibe but it expands upon the universe,” Sandberg said in a featurette released earlier this week. “One of the creative things the game did is...

Sony’s Screen Gems has unveiled a first-look featurette for Until Dawn, its adaptation of the hit video game, directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out), which hits theaters April 25.
In the video, released on Tuesday, writer-producer Gary Dauberman reflects on his approach to the adaptation, saying that “as a huge fan of the Until Dawn game and how cinematic it was, I thought a lot about how we could continue the story without just giving the audience the same experience that they got when they were playing.”
Sandberg notes that while the film has “the same tone and same vibe” as the game, it “expands upon the universe” at the same time. “One of the creative things the game did,” he says, “is that people make different choices and die in different ways. Sony Pictures has shared a first look at the upcoming Until Dawn movie, which will open in theaters on April 25, 2025, with a trailer on the way soon. The film is a live-action spin-off of the 2015 video game developed by Supermassive Games.
One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one… only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening.
Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.

Ahead of an official trailer release, Sony Pictures has released a first look at Until Dawn. The upcoming horror movie is a live-action spinoff of the 2015 video game of the same name.
In the first look video, Until Dawn director David F. Sandberg and writer Gary Dauberman discuss how the movie will stay true to the original game — which featured a butterfly effect system in which players must make choices that may change the story, including which characters survive or die — while giving the audience a new experience. "One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways," Sandberg explained, meaning that players could revisit Until Dawn multiple times and get a different outcome every single time. This butterfly effect system has been loosely adapted for the movie, with Sandberg revealing that there is "this mechanic where things start over and [the characters] get to try again,...

Same night, different nightmare. Sony Pictures has released first look footage from the movie adaptation of the Until Dawn video game this morning, in the form of a featurette video with insights from director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation, Shazam), writer Gary Dauberman and star Peter Stormare. Watch the footage below!
Until Dawn will be unleashed in theaters on April 25, 2025.
Of particular note, Sandberg reveals in the video that the upcoming Until Dawn movie will have a similar mechanic to the choose-your-own-adventure style of the video game.
“One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways,” Sandberg explains. “The movie has this mechanic, where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre.”
“To survive,” Sandberg continues, “They have to make it Until Dawn.

The movie version of Until Dawn is mostly still a mystery, despite shooting coming to an end last year. With an April release date set, there has been no trailer, no images, and no plot details about the long-awaited adaptation of the survival horror video game. However, thanks to new information revealed by Sony at CES 2025, fans hoping to see Until Dawn follow the likes of The Last of Us in bringing a faithful version of the game to cinemas may find themselves disappointed with the update.
According to information shared during the event (as per ComicBook), the film will not be a direct adaptation of the familiar story, but will instead introduce a whole new cast of characters in a story that simply takes place within the same world as the game. One piece of connective tissue between the two projects is actor Peter Stormare, who appears in the movie after voicing Dr.

Sony wasn’t done with their film announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025. Along with revealing that a Helldivers film adaptation was in the works, Sony also dropped news regarding the film adaptation of Until Dawn. Per IGN, Ashley Brucks, president of Sony’s film division Screen Gems, stated that director David F. Sandberg‘s Until Dawn will respect the source material, but will feature a new story and cast of characters separate from the original game.
“The key to successful adapting these games comes down to one thing: respecting the source material,” Brucks said. “Our close collaboration with PlayStation Productions gives us and our filmmakers the advantage of working directly with the creators of the game.
It’s a careful balance of trying to identify and incorporate what the fans love about the game and the experience as well as offering something fresh and exciting to entice newcomers.” Brucks...

Sony has confirmed the upcoming Until Dawn movie adaptation is making a key departure from the game, which will set the film apart from its source material. Based on the 2015 choose-your-own-adventure video game of the same name, the upcoming Until Dawn movie follows a group of characters who are terrorized by mysterious, supernatural forces. In the game, this happens when a group of friends stay at a cabin overnight together, with the player having to make choices that determine who will live through the whole game, and who will die along the way.

Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman and Liana Liberato are back with more murder and mayhem in Based on a True Story season two. And this time, there’s a new pint-sized accessory in tow.
Based on a True Story is based on (or partly inspired by) a true story. The series, which satirizes true-crime tropes, introduced Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who crossed paths with an infamous serial killer, “The Westside Ripper,” in Los Angeles. Ava, a pregnant true-crime obsessive, suggested making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their marital rut.
Now, after the events of season one, season two opens with Ava and Nathan as new parents who attempt to now get out of the true-crime game — but, as the trailer shows, those aspirations are fleeting. The season opens on Ava and Nathan struggling to balance parenthood with waking away from their obsession.

To mark the movies production wrap, the filmmaker also shared a new behind-the-scenes photo, featuring a clapboard in front of a very bloody mirror. The project serves as Sandbergs return to horror, after directing back-to-back Shazam! movies for the past four years. Unlike the first installment, last years Shazam! Fury of the Gods sequel received mixed critical reviews, and was also considered a box-office failure after earning a worldwide gross of only $134 million against a reported budget of $110-125 million.

Until Dawn's live-action movie will bring the iconic horror story to life. However, its great new casting confirms the original cast won't return. Peter Stormare's return as Dr. Hill adds to the movie's potential success, with his character playing a crucial role in the original game. While recasting the main characters makes sense due to age, the new cast faces high expectations to live up to the iconic performances.

Earlier this year, we learned that Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn – and now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the great character actor Peter Stormare has joined the cast of the film to reprise the role he played in the video game, therapist Dr. Hill! Which makes sense, because if you’ve already had Stormare play a character, why replace him with someone else?
Stormare joins previously announced cast members Ella Rubin of The Idea of You and the upcoming Fear Street: Prom Queen, Odessa A’zion of the recent Hellraiser reboot and the sitcom Fam, Michael Cimino of Love, Victor and Annabelle Comes Home, and Ji-young Yoo of Expats and Smoking Tigers. His fellow new additions are Belmont Cameli of Along for the Ride...
