Even the ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’ Creator Can’t Believe How Big Her Netflix Kids Show Is
Image
If you don’t have kids, you may not have heard of “Gabby’s Dollhouse.” If you have a preschooler, it has likely become a welcome upgrade from the “Cocomelon” of your child’s nursery school days.

No intended shade at “Cocomelon,” the other monster hit for Netflix in the kids space. “Cocomelon” is simplistic animation set to familiar nursery rhymes — it’s a low lift both in terms of production and consumption. “Gabby’s,” a combination of (a little) live-action and (a lot of) animation, is a child’s entry point into storytelling and imaginative play. It was for my kids — and millions of others.

For 2023, the top 5 children’s series on streaming ranked like this, per Nielsen:

“Bluey” (43.9 billion minutes streamed on Disney+) “Cocomelon” (36.3 billion minutes streamed on Netflix) “SpongeBob Squarepants” (19.8 billion minutes streamed on Paramount+) “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” (13.9 billion minutes streamed on Disney+) “Gabby’s Dollhouse” (12.8 billion minutes...

The show operates with a narrative ethos of flexible thinking and learning from your mistakes, and does so through a mix of things like music, dance, cooking and crafting.

Laila Lockhart Kraner will reprise her role from the series in the feature film, which follows Gabby as she goes on a road trip with her...

Kids TV From Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro: How Dreamworks Animation TV Changed Children’s Programming
Image
In February 2013, Dreamworks Animation Television teamed with Netflix on its first-ever children’s and family series, Turbo Fast. Just four months later, the studio and streamer would unveil a multiyear content deal — 300 hours of exclusive original, first-run content.

The pact was the official beginning of the television animation studio and at that time, the largest content deal in the streamer’s history. One of the most significant signs of the rise and permanence of the streaming era, the deal heralded a new age for the kids and family content industry.

Dreamworks Animation TV and current Dwa president Margie Cohn’s team would spend the next decade steering the studio through that and an NBC Universal acquisition, producing more than 2,100 episodes of animated programming across 43 series and partnering with Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, Peacock, Amazon and free-to-air broadcasters around the globe.

“The whole thing started on the back of the biggest order of television in history,...

How ‘Blue’s Clues’ Veterans, Unboxing Videos and Cat Ears Helped Make ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’ an Unsung Kids Media Hit

At “Netflix at The Grove,” a two-story, 10,000-square-foot shopping experience in Los Angeles, fans can browse and purchase merchandise from four of the streamer’s biggest properties. That includes global hits Squid Game, Stranger Things and Bridgerton, as well as a title that might be less expected: preschool series Gabby’s Dollhouse.

Making its debut on Jan. 5, 2021, the DreamWorks Animation show could be called a sleeper hit in that it’s breaking records for both the streamer and its studio to less obvious fanfare than the more adult titles it shares Grove shelf space with — and even some of its kids and family programming counterparts (think Bluey and Cocomelon).

“Series like Gabby’s Dollhouse are few and far between, especially in this highly competitive and crowded television landscape,” Margie Cohn, president, DreamWorks Animation, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The most popular properties today are still the...

How ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’ Creators Make Preschool Shows Watchable for Adults
Laila Lockhart Kraner in Gabby et la Maison magique (2021)
“Gabby’s Dollhouse” is among just a handful of shows for preschoolers to land on Netflix’s publicly shared Top 10 Most Popular TV list. That means not only are parents choosing it for their children under 5, they’re letting it play.

This writer, a parent who has sat through hundreds of hours of preschool TV, can say with confidence that “Gabby’s” could not make the most-streamed-hours list if the older kids and adults in the house didn’t enjoy it a bit as well — so we asked creators Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey for the secret to making preschool shows that can entertain grown-ups too.

“We’re parents as well, and certainly kids at heart. A goal Jen and I are always trying to create in our shows is certainly to have heart, but also to be quirky and clever,” Johnson said. They also want to be “different visually,...
