The all-new Carrie series, a tv series adaptation of the critically acclaimed Stephen King novel, has confirmed many cast members this last weekend. The series is being headed by Prime Video and Mike Flanagan has been tapped to man the helm. The veteran director with both films and series under his belt has locked in his main cast. Flanagan was recently in an exclusive partnership with Netflix, where most of his work has resided. This project will be one of the many he is tackling since exiting the partnership, along with The Life of Chuck.

Mike Flanagan, who is steering Prime Video’s upcoming Carrie series, says the production looked at more than a thousand submissions for the lead role before deciding on Summer Howell.
“I think we looked at 1,800 different candidates for that role,” Flanagan told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of his new film The Life of Chuck, his latest collaboration with Carrie author Stephen King. “It was an exhaustive process.”
Sissy Spacek famously starred as telekentic teenager Carrie White in the 1976 film adaptation of King’s 1974 book, while Chloe Grace Moretz took on the role for the 2013 remake. Other actresses who have portrayed the character on both the big and small screen include Angela Bettis in a 2002 TV movie and Emily Bergl in the poorly reviewed 1999 sequel The Rage: Carrie 2.

Connor Jessup’s short film “Julian and The Wind” is full of gorgeous, enveloping feelings. Watching it is like being ambushed by a swell of tickling sensations. So much seems fleeting, featherlight yet vital. In Jessup’s hands, the smallest of gestures have in their embrace a hurtling vastness of finely tuned emotional notes. From the opening itself, you’re ushered gently into a mysterious, soft, and billowing world. It’s a windy night in Ontario. It observes Arthur (David Webster) stealing a long, considered look at his boarding school roommate, Julian (Joel Oulette). The camera approximates his gaze drifting over Julian’s bare chest, a tiny slump of hair in its center. He’s interrupted when Julian suddenly begins to sleepwalk, straying out into the school grounds. Arthur can’t help but follow.

"We're not here to judge, Kiah, we're here to witness." An intriguing official trailer is available for a peculiar little indie sci-if film called Can I Get a Witness, the latest film from filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming. This premiered at TIFF 2024 last fall, and should be out in theaters soon. It's more of a utopian sci-fi feature about a future world where humanity seems to have made everyone equal without any class division – but at the cost of people over 50 required to pass on in order to control the population. This is a bit like Logan's Run, of course, but seems more ethereal and charming in its depiction of this possible future. Blending live action & animation, the film is set in a world in which travel & technology are virtually banned, and people who reach the age of 50 have to submit to required death – while young people are tasked with artistically documenting their final moments.

Loiter on any patch of land for a few hours, and you can feel centuries of history quietly thrumming beneath your feet. Stand in the corner of a suburban house on a lot that was once nothing but barren, ashen ground and will, several million years into the future, be blessed with the name “New Jersey,” and you’ll witness life in all its wonder, sorrow, and glory. Dinosaurs stomp past, ice ages come and go, indigenous people hunt for food. Rebels fight the redcoats, Ben Franklin bitches about his politically backward son,...

Visit Films has acquired international sales rights excluding Canada for “Can I Get a Witness?,” a poetic and satirical sci-fi fable written and directed by Canadian auteur Ann Marie Fleming.
The film had its world premiere at Toronto and has been selected to play in competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Mongrel Media will be releasing the film Canada.
The film is set in the not-too-distant future where we’ve solved all the world’s problems: mitigated climate change, eradicated poverty, and achieved true trans-species equality. There’s just one catch… humans have to end life at 50 and teenage artists have to document it, and it’s Kiah’s first day on the job.
“Can I Get a Witness?” stars Keira Jang, in her feature debut, alongside Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) and Joel Oulette (“Trickster”). The film is produced by Ann Marie Fleming, Raymond Massey, Ruth Vincent and executive produced by Haydn Wazelle,...

Critics' reviews for Tom Hanks' new movie, Here, have arrived, but they are not so great. Based on the 2014 graphic novel by Richard McGuire, Here tells the story of multiple generations of couples and families who have lived in the same house spanning centuries. Killers of the Flower Moon screenwriter Eric Roth co-wrote the film with Oscar-winning filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis, who also produced and directed the film. Here stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in lead roles, reuniting onscreen for the first time since co-starring in Zemeckis' 1994 movie Forrest Gump, along with Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly.
The first reviews for Here are in, and critics have found themselves generally unimpressed with the Forrest Gump reunion. The Daily Beast called the Robert Zemeckis movie "an embarrassment." IndieWire echos the same sentiment, calling out the director for wasting "a de-aged Tom Hanks and Robin Wright." IGN points out that the movie...

There’s something quintessentially American and straight out of Norman Rockwell about centering a survey of multiple generations around the living room, with idealized themes of home and family reinforced by scenes around the Christmas tree or the dining table, fully extended to accommodate the ever-expanding clan at Thanksgiving. But relatable doesn’t always mean interesting, even if the moments of joy don’t hide the vein of sadness and disappointment that runs through Here.
The same goes for the idea of shooting everything — reaching back to prehistory and right on up through contemporary times — from the same fixed point and using the same wide angle. In terms of technical craft, it’s a daring experiment, but one perhaps less geared to a dynamic narrative than an art installation. Narrowing the frame constricts the storytelling, no matter how many times a Significant Life Moment is shoved up close to the lens for emphasis.

Life isn’t too short — it’s long, as Robert Zemeckis’ brisk, inventive, and earnest latest experiment, “Here,” ponders in an hour and 40 minutes that span multiple centuries and lifetimes unfolding on the same spot on Earth. The Oscar-winning, ever-envelope-pushing filmmaker opens on prehistoric times as dinosaurs stalk the Earth, charts the arrival of Indigenous people in that very spot, gives us the birth of Benjamin Franklin, his kid, and his kid’s kid, and then takes us through the life and times of a midcentury American family led by a de-aged Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. It’s a “Forrest Gump” reunion for Zemeckis in more ways than one, as his Forrest and Jenny, here Richard and Margaret Young, are joined by that film’s Oscar-winning scribe, Eric Roth, in adapting Richard McGuire’s celebrated graphic novel.

Ann Marie Fleming poses a provocative thought experiment about what we would be willing to sacrifice for the environment's protection through the dystopian world built in Can I Get a Witness? Set in the near future, this environmental science fiction film depicts a world that is recovering from overpopulation and a lack of resources. Their solution is to prohibit and limit the use of technology and also disallow anyone from living over the age of 50. In this introspective mix of live-action and animation, Kiah, played by Keira Jang, starts her job as a "Documenter," where her artistic skills are used to capture the "dying ceremony." Alongside Joel Oulette and actress and producer Sandra Oh, Jang gives a mesmerizing performance as she demonstrates Kiah's struggle to cope with the moral implications of her job and her world.

The Canadian broadcaster CBC has pulled the plug on a planned second season of its series “Trickster” after co-creator Michelle Latimer was exposed for falsely claiming Indigenous identity last month.
The series, which is also aired in the U.S. on The CW, is an adaptation of the novel “Son of a Trickster” by the Indigenous author Eden Robinson. Led by Joel Oulette, the series was hailed upon its October 2020 release for featuring Indigenous cast and crew.
“We have had many conversations over the last few weeks with a view to continuing production on a second season of Trickster. Those conversations included producers, writers, actors, and the author of the books on which Trickster is based,” the network said in a statement. “Fully respecting everyone’s perspective, season two will not move forward as planned unfortunately.”

CBC has reversed its Season 2 renewal decision for indigenous supernatural drama series Trickster after co-creator/director Michelle Latimer became embroiled in a controversy over her claimed indigenous ancestry.
In the U.S., the CW acquired the series, which debuted on the network on Jan. 12. Three episodes into its six-episode run, the drama has delivered decent numbers for a lower-cost acquisition. The network will air the rest of the Season 1 episodes; I hear it is unlikely to take over the project as a CW original following its cancelation by CBC.
Based on Eden Robinson’s novel Son of a Trickster, the show stars newcomer Joel Oulette as an Indigenous Haisla teenager and small-time drug dealer in Kitimat, British Columbia, who becomes increasingly aware of the magical events that seem to follow him.

Canadian broadcaster CBC has pulled the plug on a planned second season of Trickster in the wake of last month’s revelation that co-creator and director Michelle Latimer is not Indigenous, as she has claimed for the past two decades.
The drama, Season 1 of which is currently airing stateside on The CW (the finale airs Feb. 16), centers on an indigenous teen (Joel Oulette) who begins to see strange, otherworldly things — talking ravens, doppelgängers and skin monsters, to name a few! — as he struggles to keep his family above water.
