The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 3, "Sisterhood Above All," which debuted Sunday, Dec. 1 on HBO.
Dune: Prophecy is set around 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, when the Bene Gesserit was only the Sisterhood and the Voice was hardly a teachable skill. That's exactly how actor Jessica Barden views the Voice: a skill that can be taught and honed, with the right desire to control people. Barden portrays a younger version of Valya Harkonnen (played in the present day by Emily Watson) as Valya rises in the Sisterhood after a fallout with her family.
Valya is viewed as the black sheep for her dangerous enthusiasm and, as her mother puts it, greed and entitlement. Her parents and uncle are passively accepting of the Harkonnens' low status after Vorian Atreides accused their ancestor of a war crime -- an act that Valya still hasn't forgiven decades later.

Valya (Emily Watson/Jessica Barden) may be the greatest power player in Dune: Prophecy, but it's Tula (Olivia Williams/Emma Canning) who is shaping up to be the series' most interesting and likable of the Harkonnen sisters. In Episode 3, "Sisterhood Above All," she kills Orry Atreides (Milo Callaghan) and his family, leaving the audience in shock in face of such a tragedy. The whole scene is shocking because it shows that, deep down, Tula didn't want to do any of that. She may agree with Valya that House Harkonnen deserves better than their exile on frigid Lankiveil, but she never seemed to have mass-murdering instincts in her, and was always the one who actually cared for their family.

In one of the most shocking scenes in Dune: Prophecy, young Tula Harakonnen (Emma Canning) kills all the men in House Atreides, including her boyfriend, Orry Atreides (Milo Callaghan) in this week's episode, "Sisterhood Above All." The party was preparing to hunt a Salusan bull on Caladan, and, after they all died, the creature appears to Tula but calmly walks away instead of attacking. The Salusan bull is an iconic Dune creature, and, although it carries a lot of symbolism about Tula's own character, it also has ties to House Atreides.

Warning: Spoilers for Dune: Prophecy
The latest prequel series in the massive Dune franchise details the origins of the Bene Gesserit and chronicles the early steps the secretive sisterhood took in steering the trajectory of the Imperium from the shadows. Unlike Denis Villeneuve’s films, Dune: Prophecy takes place in the worlds beyond Arrakis and its desert sands. In fact, there’s hardly a worm in sight. What the series does possess is an array of various villains, all vying for ultimate control and power. In the show’s first episode, viewers were introduced to Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who heartlessly used his “gift” to murder Lord Pruwet Richeseand (Charlie Hodson-Prior) and is believed to have done the same to Reverend Mother Kasha Jinjo (Jihae). As such, he’s clearly the primary villain of the series, or so viewers might have initially thought.

HBO’s new series Dune: Prophecy took a dark and startling turn in its newest episode, “Sisterhood Above All,” when the long-running animosity between the Harkonnen and Atreides families became tragic. Tula Harkonnen sees a large ox in a pivotal scene in Dune: Prophecy episode 3, which has significant thematic meaning for House Harkonnen. 10,000 years earlier than Denis Villeneuve's movies on Dune's timeline, House Harkonnen and House Atreides are still at each other's throats. Actors Olivia Williams and Emma Canning play Tula Harkonnen at different ages in Dune: Prophecy's cast, exploring a complex supporting character who's willing to commit extreme acts for her family, as exhibited by the mass murder of Orry Atreides and other members of his family in episode 3.

The third episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Sisterhood Above All," is in the can. This one took us into the past as we explored the backstories of Valya and Tula Harkonnen, seeing the traumas that shaped their lives before they became the leaders of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. The both of them were deeply affected by the death of their brother Griffin Harkonnen, who was killed by a member of the powerful Atreides family. Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 3, "Sisterhood Above All," allows Tula Harkonnen to step out of her older sister Valya's shadow. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dune: Prophecy episode 3!Dune: Prophecy episode 3 is titled "Sisterhood Above All," and while it is primarily in reference to Valya Harkonnen's inability to say those words as a vow to the Bene Gesserit, it also highlights Tula's single-minded devotion to her elder sister's goals. The episode spends more time than ever before exploring the Harkonnen girls' lives before they officially joined the Sisterhood, taking viewers to their desolate home planet of Lankiveil and showcasing how differently Valya feels from her parents about the family's outcast status. When her brother Griffin dies attempting to bring her the justice she desires, Valya is sent away to the Sisterhood, and Tula is left to take up the mantle of vengeance.

Earlier this year, Disney+ aired a Star Wars TV show called The Acolyte, about a pair of long-sundered sisters who were powerful in the Force. The third episode used extensive flashbacks to show us what traumatic events befell the sisters as children, and it was, on the whole, a failure. We'd barely gotten a chance to acquaint ourselves with the main characters in the first two episodes, and now the show is halting any plot momentum to spend an hour in the past? Boo.
The third episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Sisterhood Above All," does much the same thing, but it works much better. Maybe because the episodes of Dune: Prophecy are much longer than episodes of The Acolyte, so we have more time to sit with the story. Upon learning that Hart - who apparently survived being swallowed by a sandworm on Arrakis - had made it his mission to wipe out the Sisterhood entirely, Valya uses "the Voice" to command the soldier to plunge his own dagger into his throat. Incredibly, Hart manages to resist the order.

The six-episode series about the origin of the mysterious Bene Gesserit changed creative leadership a few different times until Schapker and Diane Ademu-John became co-creators and co-showrunners. When production began in late 2022, Schapker then took on the role of sole showrunner through its delivery to the network. It was familiar territory for the scribe, having most recently served as an executive producer on Westworld season four and showrunner on Altered Carbon season two. When Dune: Prophecy finally premiered on HBO on November 17, 2024, fans instantly noticed how different the iconic Harkonnens looked compared to the two movie versions. Rather than the distinct bald heads and pale skin tone that Vladimir Harkonnen's band of villains are defined by in David Lynch and Denis Villeneuve's vision of the classic Frank Herbert sci-fi tale, their appearance in the TV series has an evolutionary component.
To understand the Harkonnens' physiological evolution, it's important to know that Dune: Prophecy functions as a prequel to events depicted in the 2021 Dune movie. As such, the villainous race long opposing House Atredies comes from a distant planet much different than their place of origin in the big-screen adaptations. Here's why the Harkonnens look so differently in Dune: Prophecy.

[This story contains spoilers from the Dune: Prophecy series premiere, as well as House of the Dragon seasons one and two.]
The end of an old war brings about a regime change in a faraway fantasy land. From that moment forward, one organization holds all the cards over the rest of civilization, while others scheme and plot their way toward ultimate power — or die trying.
Sound familiar? That could be because it’s a very vague description of two HBO shows that aired episodes this year: House of the Dragon, which completed its second season over the summer, and the newest arrival, Dune: Prophecy, based on the novel universe created by Frank Herbert and most recently adapted for film by Denis Villeneuve.
Coming hot on the heels of the widely beloved (and fellow Max import) Penguin, the new Dune series aims to capture HBO loyalists’ attention with another epic novel adaptation, not entirely unlike the other epic novel adaptation.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the review embargo for Dune: Prophecy lifted earlier today and the response to the six-episode HBO series is so far mostly positive. While this is technically a prequel to the Dune movies, Denis Villeneuve isn't involved and the massive time gap means there will be no crossovers.
For the most part, it sounds like Dune: Prophecy is a worthy addition to the sci-fi franchise, even if it doesn't necessarily break the mould. For fans of Villeneuve's groundbreaking movies, that's likely to come as something of a let-down.
In The Hollywood Reporter's review, it's said, "Even though it’s part of a brand, Dune: Prophecy has lots of elements to introduce, and the series is already a slow, sometimes lugubrious build. But I found myself becoming increasingly invested as it went along. Maybe by the end of the first season, I’ll be hooked.

‘Dune: Prophecy’ Review: HBO’s Somber ‘House of the Dragon’-Style Prequel Could Use a Bit More Spice
When it premieres on HBO Sunday, Nov. 17, Dune: Prophecy will take the place of The Penguin on the schedule. It’ll also continue the premium cable giant’s recent run of odd corporate integration, in which it takes blockbuster Warner Bros. film franchises and retrofits them as new television versions of popular HBO series.
Just as the creative team behind The Penguin looked at the opportunity to do a standalone show focused on Colin Farrell’s waddling crime lord and delivered The Sopranos with more latex, the developers of Dune: Prophecy apparently looked at the opportunity to do a prequel tied to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and delivered House of the Dragon with (a very few) sandworms in place of (an awful lot of) dragons.
I’m not saying that when HBO’s Harry Potter series finally emerges from its endless gestation, it will be a stealth reboot of Arli...

Worthy candidates are selected in a sneak peek of the upcoming Dune: Prophecy series. The clip has been getting the upcoming series more comparisons to Game of Thrones, but in space.
IGN released a brand-new clip to X centered on Sisterhood members Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams), who exchange strong words with one another while judging a list of Sisterhood candidates to pair up with Princess Ynez. Concerns over the candidates, as Valya explains, stems from their desire not "to broaden the princess' worldview. It's to adhere her to our own," worrying that some are "too independent a thinker" when influencing her in the Sisterhood's teachings. Their conversation also addresses the women's childhood, the potential futures Sisterhood members will achieve, and the "hard layers" they must grow to lay the groundwork for the future Bene Gesserit's long-term goals in the Dune timeline.

The Citadel spy universe from Amazon MGM Studios all began with Citadel in 2023, kicking off an expensive multi-series global storytelling event. Even with mixed reviews, the studio invested in creator David Weils vision to tell connected stories about a spy agency in ruins. The first spinoff was Citadel: Diana the second is Citadel: Honey Bunny. The former detailed undercover agent Diana Vavalieris journey out of enemy lines in Italy with the help of the heir of Citadels villainous competitor, Manticore. Met with better reviews than Citadel, it seemed the spinoffs could be the positive reel we needed.

HBO has just dropped the official trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com) following a star-studded panel at the New York Comic-Con. It's also been revealed that the six-episode series premieres on Sunday, November 17 at 9pm Et/Pt.
If you're unfamiliar with Frank Herbert's Dune books, you may struggle to make sense of what you see here. There's a great deal of political intrigue, though, with the spotlight put primarily on Bene Gesserit's mysterious origins.
Talking to Screen Rant earlier today, executive producer Allison Schapkey explained how this iteration of the group differs from what we've seen in Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.
"I think when you see the Bene Gesserit in the films, first of all, you're really seeing their forward face. They cultivate such a mystique, such a mystery. And they're out there being ruthless and decisive and powerful and trying to play every angle and manipulate every possible outcome.
