The Only Time Clint Eastwood And Martin Scorsese Ever Collaborated
Image
In 2003, Martin Scorsese was cooling off after his long-in-the-making epic "Gangs of New York." Although that film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, some of Scorsese's fans now consider "Gangs of New York" to be an overstuffed film that took way too much time to percolate (Scorsese had initially envisioned the project back in 1970). After fighting so hard to get "Gangs of New York" made and bearing the publicity whirlwind around its Oscars campaign, Scorsese needed a rest.

Scorsese rested in the way an active and prolific director rests: he churned out another project. 2003 saw the release of a multipart documentary series called "The Blues," which Scorsese produced and directed the first episode of. "The Blues" was a seven-episode film cycle, with each chapter detailing a different corner of the vast American Blues experience. Each episode was helmed by a different famous director. The series aired on PBS in September...

‘All Red Hair and No. B.S.’: Grateful Dead and Bonnie Raitt Tributes Soar at Kennedy Center Honors
Image
The 2024 edition of the Kennedy Center Honors celebrated an eclectic assortment of entertainers Sunday night: filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, singer Bonnie Raitt, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and surviving members of the Grateful Dead. The organization also bestowed its honor on an entertainment venue for the first time, New York’s iconic Apollo Theater.

As per tradition, the honorees observed the proceedings from the presidential box in the Kennedy Center Opera House, accompanied by President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and First Husband Doug Emhoff. Freshly arrived from a White House reception, all received rousing ovations from an appreciative audience when introduced.

That White House tradition could go on hiatus during the incoming Trump administration, since Donald Trump notably declined to participate in the affair during his first presidency. Nonetheless, invitations will be extended by the rigidly nonpartisan arts institution, the Kencen assures.

Slated to air on CBS Dec.

Virgil Films Acquires ‘100 Years From Mississippi’, A Portrait Of Centenarian Activist Mamie Lang Kirkland
Image
Exclusive: Virgil Films has acquired 100 Years from Mississippi, a documentary portrait of Mamie Lang Kirkland, who died in 2020 at age 111 after a remarkable life.

Kirkland fled Ellisville, Ms, in 1915 at age seven with her mother and siblings as her father and his friend, John Hartfield, escaped an approaching lynch mob. Hartfield returned to Mississippi four years later and was killed in one of the most horrific lynchings of the era. The act was witnessed by 10,000 spectators and memorialized on post cards.

One hundred years later, in 2015, Kirkland went back to Ellisville after vowing never to return. She did so at the urging of her son, Tarabu Betserai Kirkland, who wanted to clarify stories about Hartfield and his family that he had heard since childhood. He directed the film.

Virgil, which made the acquisition deal with Kirkland and producer Gina Rugolo Judd, plans to release the film in February.

G. Love enlists his homebound fans for a new music video for his song “Shake Your Hair.” In typical G. Love fashion, the track is a funky jam with a hooky chorus and rapid-fire lyrical delivery.

“‘Shake Your Hair’ is a song sharing the flavor of R.E.M.’s ‘It’s the End of the World’ and Billy Joel’s ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire,” says the Philadelphia songwriter. “The lyrics are a huge list of where-we-are-at pop culture references with the sentiment that our ‘American Empire’ could be all done.

Tribeca Review: ‘Copwatch’ is a Minor Post-Ferguson Documentary
There’s a moment late in Camilla Hall’s Copwatch when a rare officer of color from the Ferguson Police Department engages a group of copwatchers, a term used for local, autonomous groups who document policing activity and potential wrongdoing on the side of the law. He’s careful to discuss policies he’s not a fan of while hearing them out. Copwatch isn’t a permanent solution — one would hope with the rise of body cameras and community-based policing it wouldn’t have to be — but there is still unanswered questions regarding police tactics and use of force that supervisors and chiefs remain unwilling to be transparent about for one reason or another. Or, as former NYPD Police Commissioner Bill Bratton used to say, “it looks awful, but it’s lawful.” The conversation that ends Copwatch is lively, even if the Copwatchers occasionally talk over themselves, which could be...

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran and Bill Withers joined Stephen Colbert on The Late Show to promote an upcoming Carnegie Hall tribute and charity concert in Withers' honor that will benefit the Stuttering Association for the Young — something both musicians suffered from as children.

On top of that, Sheeran said he used to wear massive National Health Service-issued eyeglasses and has no eardrum in one ear.

Eric Clapton in Rush (1991)
Keith Richards' Surprise Performance
Eric Clapton in Rush (1991)
New York — Eric Clapton's Crossroads festival has become the mecca for riff worshippers, so it was appropriate that guitar deity Keith Richards made a surprise appearance to perform with Clapton.

The Rolling Stone received perhaps the most sustained standing ovation of the night as he joined his old pal toward the end of Crossroads, a two-night concert festival at Madison Square Garden that brought together a dazzling array of guitar masters, from John Mayer to Jeff Beck to legends like Buddy Guy, and of course, Clapton and Richards.

Richards – whose Stones announced another tour earlier this month – flashed his typical wry smile to the crowd before joining Clapton in playing the blues standard and Clapton favorite "Key to the Highway. "

"Now we're gonna rock it up," Richards said before launching into "Sweet Little Rock N' Roller."

Richards' appearance was only the beginning of Clapton's hour-plus-long set, which included hits...

The late Levon Helm, Ewan McGregor, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Marianne Faithfull, Jane Birkin, Rosanne Cash and 43 other acts feature on a new song released by Amnesty International.

Titled Toast to Freedom, the song celebrates Amnesty's 50th anniversary and is being released to mark World Press Freedom Day on Thursday. The initial recording was made at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, before producer Bob Clearmountain sent it to dozens of artists – also including the Blind Boys of Alabama, Donald Fagen, Eric Burdon and Taj Mahal – to add their vocals. It was written by Carl Carlton and Larry Campbell.

The idea for Toast to Freedom was conceived by Bill Shipsey, founder of the Art for Amnesty campaign, his colleague Jochen Wilms and Carlton, who has previously worked with Robert Palmer and Eric Burdon.

Why Michelle Obama has husband Barack singing the blues at home
Here is the latest celeb gossip about the following topic from one of the freelance news writers at Green Celebrity Network. Will inviting celebrity friends to the White House come treating the home more like a pop culture icon than a famous place with historical significance hurt Barack Obama's chance at re-election? If it does, he and the family will most likely be heading back to Sweet Home Chicago. Michelle Obama had the crew from Extreme Home Makeover in to remodel the house. Then B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark, Jr., Shemekia Copeland, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes, Mick Jagger, Keb' Mo', Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks with Taraji P all came to a house party to celebrate Black History Month. Why is his choice to invite stars right and hers wrong? Keep reading...

Watch President Obama Sing “Sweet Home Chicago”
After President Barack Obama’s glorious rendition of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” last month, we didn’t think we’d see anything better from the President, musically, at least. Last night, however, stars that included Mick Jagger, B. B. King, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck and Keb Mo gathered in the East Room of the White House for a blues concert in honor of Black History Month. The event was part of the series “In Performance at the White House,” and the entire show will be broadcast on Feb. 27 on PBS. As President Obama stated at the event, “This music speaks to...

Mick Jagger at an event for Boardwalk Empire (2010)
Watch: Obama Sings With B.B. King And Mick Jagger
Mick Jagger at an event for Boardwalk Empire (2010)
Washington — The president just couldn't say no: Mick Jagger held out a mic almost by way of command, and soon Barack Obama was belting out the blues with the best of them.

The East Room of the White House was transformed into an intimate blues club on Tuesday night for a concert featuring blues all-stars of the past, present and future – and the president himself.

The surprise performance by Obama came at the end of the playlist when the blues ensemble was singing "Sweet Home Chicago," the blues anthem of Obama's home town.

Buddy Guy prodded the president, saying he'd heard that the president sang part of an Al Green tune recently, and adding, "You gotta keep it up."

Then Jagger handed over the mic, and Obama seemed compelled to comply.

"Come on, baby don't you want to go," the president sang out twice, handing off the mic to B.B. King momentarily,...
