The Year of Indonesian Cinema
Image
Following a 2023 that definitely belonged to Malaysia, with titles like “Tiger Stripes“, “Abang Adik”, “La Luna” and a number of others, it seems that 2024 belongs to another Asean country, Indonesia. For us that we have been following local cinema for some years, this does not come as a surprise, since the stories were already there and it seemed that the industry just needed some nurturing in order to fully bloom. Following investment by Cj, it was when streamers and particularly Netflix started investing in local content, that the leap that was bound to happen finally became reality. Headed by Joko Anwar, Kamila Andini, Kimo Stamboel, Timo Tjahjanto and a number of others, local cinema seems to be in good hands, as the movies in the following list eloquently highlight. At the same time, the same can be said about the actors, with names like Laura Basuki, Shenina Cinnamon, Yusuf Mahardika,...

At that time, an old man named Tuha saved her from slaughter, and brought her to live on a floating house in the waters. As the story begins, she has been living afloat for over a decade and every time she tries to even step on land, she experiences a shock that makes it evident she cannot set foot on it.

Indonesia’s Reza Rahadian, Yosep Anggi Noen Talk Busan Premiere ‘24 Hours With Gaspar’; Visinema Pictures’ International Approach
Image
Exclusive: Indonesian actor Reza Rahadian and director Yosep Anggi Noen are attending Busan International Film Festival with their dystopian crime drama 24 Hours With Gaspar, which is receiving its world premiere in the festival’s Jiseok competition.

An adaptation of Sabda Armandio’s 2017 novel of the same name, the fast-paced thriller is the biggest budget film that Noen, an award-winning arthouse filmmaker, has ever made and marks the first time he’s worked with Rahadian and Laura Basuki, who are both big stars in Indonesia. Upcoming actress Shenina Cinnamon also stars in the film.

Noen says he was approached to direct the project by Angga Dwimas Sasongko, founder of Indonesia’s Visinema Pictures and immediately agreed because he liked the book. “It’s a story about loss, because the main character is coming to terms with losing his friend, but it’s also a visualization of a dystopian Indonesia which we’ve rarely seen,...

Film Review: 24 Hours with Gaspar (2023) by Yosep Anggi Noen
Image
Locarno and Busan favorite Yosep Anggi Noen returns to the latter this year with a truly different style from him, which combines elements of crime, action, martials arts, and mystery, in a package that also includes some of the most popular actors in Indonesia at the moment.

24 Hours with Gaspar is screening at Busan International Film Festival

The script is based on the homonymous novel by Sabda Armandio, and takes place in 2032, an era, though, that does not seem that much different than today, particularly since the rich continue to pray on the poor. Gaspar is a detective with unusual methods, who has garnered, though, the sympathy and occasionally even awe of the locals for his abilities. During one of his investigations, regarding a mass slaughter case involving the government, he stumbles upon an informant that gives him hints about his childhood friend Kirana. Everything points towards Wan Ali, a...

Film Review: Dear David (2023) by Lucky Kuswandi
Image
It seems that with the toning down of censorship in Indonesia, filmmakers are now free(er) to deal with issues that could not be touched before, such as female desire, the harshness of the school system and the blight of social media, through realistic approaches. The recent “Like & Share” and “Photocopier” are two of the most renowned samples, with Lucky Kuswandi's latest work, “Dear David” also moving in the same direction.

Laras, despite being the second child of a poor family along with her brother and mother, is the student body president at an expensive private school, which she is able to attend due to a scholarship. Both the aforementioned facts (that she is poor and a straight A student) have not helped her in the school environment, with her frequently getting bullied, even more so since she is the principal,...

‘Dear David’ (2023) Netflix Movie: A “Teen Flick” from Indonesia
Image
Dear David is a drama film directed by Lucky Kuswandi starring Shenina Cinnamon.

This high-school adolescent movie comes from Indonesia… It will not be a film that goes down in the history of movie making and doesn´t teach us anything new that we don´t already know: all over the world people make movies about teens, some have charm and others don´t.

This is one of the movies that doesn´t have any.

About the Movie Dear David (2023)

A love-struck teenage girl, in high school, more or less risqué fantasies and your diary used to be caught and now they catch your files. Nothing new under the sun on a planet Earth in which adolescents get silly, have pimples, flirt and make mistakes… and that is how the human race goes on, miraculously, based on these mistakes transformed in celluloid (or mobile phone files in this day and age) which,...

Having failed in her scholarship application as a result of said photos, Sur performs an investigation of her own after her claims are dismissed by the interview board and father, only to uncover a startling series of numerous victims who have fallen prey to the same fate. Told mainly from the perspective of Sur as she embarks upon her quest, viewers are offered a voyeuristic look into the lives of those she investigates.
