Film Review: May the Devil Take You Too (2020) by Timo Tjahjanto
Image
Following the critical and commercial success of the first May the Devil Take You, director Timo Tjahjanto brings several costars back this go-round for a second thrilling chapter in the series of Alfie confronting terrifying ghostly beings. Despite a few minor miscalculations from time-to-time, this is a spectacular and rewarding sequel now available to stream on Shudder.

Believing she has survived the ordeal, Alfie (Chelsea Islan) and Nara (Hadijah Shahab) try to get by with their lives only to be suddenly attacked and kidnapped by a group of intruders one evening. Revealing themselves as Budi, (Baskara Mahendra) Marta, (Karina Salim), Leo (Arya Vasco), Gadis (Widika Sidmore) and Kristi (Lutesha) who under the guise of Jenar (Shareefa Daanish) bring her back to the orphanage in order to help them deal with a spirit haunting the group. Realizing the spirit they’ve encounter is similar in appearance and intensity...

Nightstream 2020 Reviews: May The Devil Take You Too and Frank & Zed
Image
Earlier this month, the 2020 Nightstream Film Festival offered up genre fans a ton of amazing online offerings to enjoy throughout its four-day festivities. Here’s a look at two of the films I had the opportunity to watch during Nightstream: May the Devil Take You Too from Timo Tjahjanto (which hits Shudder soon) and Jesse Blanchard’s puppet splatterfest, Frank & Zed.

May the Devil Take You Too: Two years ago, Timo Tjahjanto unleashed May the Devil Take You, his demonic thrill ride pitting a young woman named Alfie (Chelsea Islan) and her step-family against sinister forces that want nothing more than to claim their souls. Now, Tjahjanto is back with his follow-up effort, May the Devil Take You Too, which feels slightly more ambitious and polished than its predecessor, and once again evokes a Raimi-esque sense of banana pants filmmaking that delivers up a ton of devilishly fun gore and violence.

Film Review: May the Devil Take You (2018) by Timo Tjahjanto
Currently one of the hottest directors working in Asia, director Timo Tjahjanto has offered a slew of explosive and engaging efforts that are placing him at the forefront of international success. Not only has the man broken away being part of ‘The Mo Brothers’ with Kimo Stamboel, Timo followed up his previous action highlight ‘The Night Comes For Us’ with his standout horror film ‘Sebelum Iblis Menjemput,’ or streaming on Netflix under the title ‘May the Devil Take You.’

Fearing for her father, Alfie arrives at the hospital to meet him only to find her stepsiblings Maya, Ruben (Samo Rafael), Nara, (Hadijah Shahab) and their mother Laksmi there as well. As they engage in their usual bickering, the group is forced by circumstances beyond their control to investigate his house in order to find out what happened to him. Almost immediately, they realize that their father awakened a great evil...

‘May the Devil Take You’ Review: A Bland Homage to Sam Raimi’s Horror Films
They say that idle hands are the devil’s playthings, but Indonesian schlockmeister Timo Tjahjanto is never busier than when he’s skirting around the fringes of hell. Just a few long weeks after the release of his gonzo and blood-drenched beat-em-up, “The Night Comes for Us,” Tjahjanto is back with a gonzo and blood-drenched dose of domestic horror, “May the Devil Take You” (viewers familiar with the director’s gobstopping “V/H/S 2” segment won’t be surprised to see that he’s drawn to movies about the inescapable forces of darkness). Both films are available to stream on Netflix, both films offer giddy proof of Tjahjanto’s insatiable appetite for human suffering (both on the screen and in the audience), and both films become interminable reminders that geysers of blood can only get you so far.

A Sam Raimi homage that festers into a Sam Raimi knockoff, “May the Devil Take You...
