Donnie Yen is continuing his return to the director's chair after a 20-year break with The Prosecutor. Having started his career as a stuntman in Hong Kong, Yen first began finding success with the TV adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, as well as choreographing and starring in numerous Hollywood action movies, including Blade II. Though having worked as an action director multiple times throughout his career, Yen's list of full directorial efforts is relatively smaller, ranging from 1997's Legend of the Wolf to 2004's Protégé de la Rose Noire, after which he wouldn't direct again until 2023's Sakra.

The prosecution never rests in Donnie Yen’s new action-infused legal drama The Prosecutor, in which the veteran martial artist plays a righteous cop who quits the force to join the Department of Justice when he feels the legal system is letting too many criminals slip through its fingers.

Yen directs as well as stars alongside a host of familiar faces including Francis Ng, Julian Cheung and the increasingly ubiquitous Michael Hui, but Yen’s hardcore action fanbase may be left wanting. The Prosecutor too often feels more invested in bludgeoning its audience into submission using the tenets of Hong Kong’s rule of law, rather than the iron fists of traditional street justice.

Hong Kong’s Mandarin Motion Pictures has secured sales rights to Jackie Chan action comedy Panda Plan and will launch the film at the American Film Market (AFM).

Zhang Luan directs the Chinese feature, in which a baby panda with just one dark circle around his eye becomes a worldwide sensation after being born at China’s Noah Zoo. When a Middle Eastern tycoon dispatches mercenaries to snatch baby pandas from the zoo, iconic action star Chan – playing a version of himself – becomes involved to protect the animals at the wildlife park.

Hong Kong has been haunted on the screen for a very long time, but starting with Sammo Hung “Encounters of a Spooky Kind” (1980) the city also found plenty of humor in it. The Hk ghost genre has developed its completely unique style: smart, quirky, bonkers and scary at the same time. Supernatural served this way is not exactly what horror genre is supposed to be about – chilling, mocking the improbable elements of scare, the things your logic tells you are ridiculous, but your instincts don’t. Ultimately, this works pretty well when it involves a harmonious balance between humor, dread, and melodrama.
