This Day That Year: 20 Years Of Shoojit Sircar’s Debut – Yahaan
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Shoojit Sircar’s directorial debut Yahaan, which released 20 years ago in a new installment of This Day That Year series.

Beautiful faces, smiling faces, saddened faces, perturbed faces… The Kashmir that we see in debutant director Shoojit Sircar’s Yahaan is a valley of mystery and joy. Cinematographer Jakob Ishre has used blue-tinged lenses to highlight the mood of doom and beauty.

There have been at least two other films earlier where love has unfolded in the clammy clasp of Kashmiri militancy. Neither Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir nor Ashok Pandit’s Sheen got the the sur of romance-in-the-times-of-ravages.

Yahaan inches closer to the romance and brutal realism of the Valley without losing out on the basic aethetic value of the story. Director Sircar takes his time to build up a romance. The early sequences showing the army offier Captain Aman(Jimmy Shergill) darting open-mouthed looks...

‘My Favourite Pran Film’ – Filmistan Selects
Image
Subhash K Jha, asked Filmistan for their lists of their favorite performances of iconic and esteemed Pran, both where he played villain and the good guy and they all had overwhelming praise for the actor.

Shatrughan Sinha: “Upkar, where Pran Saab stole the show from the hero-director-producer Manoj Kumar. For a villain to transform so effortlessly into that epitome of human kindness, Malang Chacha. Hats off! I also loved him in Raj Kapoor’s Bobby . He was a disciplinarian father but never cruel.”

Amitabh Bachchan: “Madhumati, Johnny Mera Naam, Zanjeer… so many!”

Sudhir Mishra: “Johnny Mera Naam and Zanjeer. He played almost parallel parts to the hero.”

Aanand Rai: “Where do I begin? Do I single out Pran Saab in Upkar? Or do I talk about Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Parichay or Madhumati? Pran Saab was never anything but brilliant. To single out any one...

Shoojit Sircar On The Cinema and Legacy of Guru Dutt
Image
Speaking with Subhash K Jha, Shoojit Sircar talks about the esteemed Guru Dutt and his influence on film to this day in this fascinating interview.

Like all notable contemporary filmmakers, you seem influenced by Guru Dutt?

It took some time for me to really grasp and understand Guru Dutt’s cinema. But of course, those stark images, light and shadow, those still images left a large impression on me. But for me, I wanted to discover him more, so when I discovered who he was as a director, his personal life, his personal struggles, that’s when actually Pyaasa and Kagaz Ke Phool actually hit me hard.

Whom would you compare with among European filmmakers?

Like Truffaut, from the way he changed the cinema in the European filmmaking, similarly I think somewhere, Guru Dutt came with a certain kind of a vision, an introspection on the status of women in Hindi cinema.

The original “My Melbourne” anthology film tackled themes of identity, gender, race, sexuality, and disability, earning critical praise across India and Australia.

“Detective Sherdil, A Complacent Smug Diljit Dosanjh Can’t Rescue This Whydunnit” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Forget whodunnit. The bigger question is, whydunit? Why was this anaemic bland murder mystery even made? Was it a death wish? Or maybe a debt to be cleared? Or perhaps someone held the team at gunpoint and ordered a murder mystery with no twist, no surprises, zero interest, from both the makers and the audience.

Sigh! One more dud from Zee5, the Ott streamers who specialize in shooting themselves in the foot. Detective Sherdil is supposed to be funny, acerbic, sharp, and bang-on. He also plays the harmonica whenever he is inspired. It could be dead body or a living nobody: Sherdil has a tune—one tune, mind it—for all occasions. It is like Rajesh Khanna in Mere sapno ki rani without Sharmila Tagore for inspiration.

All this should have made Sherdil the most interesting detective since Sherlock and his Bengali cousin Byomkesh. As played by the normally-likeable Diljit Dosanjh,...

Subhash K Jha On 12 Years Of Fukrey
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at 2013’s Fukrey, directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, and starring Pulkit Samrat, Manjot Singh, Varun Sharma, Ali Fazal, Priya Anand, Vishakha Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, and Richa Chadda.

There is something about the theatre of the absurd that brings on a volley of unwarranted nonsense in the filmmakers of this country. Fukrey is about an eclectic bunch of no-good students poised between a rapidly-receding adolescence and a reluctant manhood is far funnier, more intelligent sharply–enacted and deftly executed than the recent much-lauded Kai Po Che.

And yes, though the boys think and talk a lot about sex, there is a refreshing absence of double-meanings in the dialogues. Fukrey with its inventive plot and wickedly dead-on characterizations is the kind of rare and precious comedy where the actors seem to have adopted their roles without considering their own ambitions as an actor.

On His Birthday Shining The Spotlight On Varun Dhawan’s Most Mature Performances
Image
In celebration of Varun Dhawan’s birthday, Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on the actor’s career and shares his list of Varun’s most mature and best performances… so far.

Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur (2015) was Varun’s first thrust at something more substantial and realistic than the fluff stuff he had done till then. Director Sriram Raghavan had an older actor in mind to play a man grieving and raging for his slain family. Varun insisted on doing the role. Varun Dhawan, a bit raw around the edges, is nonetheless acutely effective as the grieving family man and Nawazuddin flawlessly flamboyant as the sly villain who has willy-nilly destroyed the hero’s life, together confer an overpowering immediacy to the proceedings. Varun falters due to inexperience but more than redeems himself in a sequence such as the one where he confesses to Nawazuddin about cold-bloodedly killing a couple.

‘Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh’ Review: Blunt-Edged Drama About an Indian Tragedy Occasionally Hits the Mark
Image
In one of the many courtroom scenes in Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh, a judge says, “No need for any theatrics here.” He, of course, doesn’t understand that theatrics are the lifeblood of one of Indian cinema’s favorite genres — the legal drama. For decades, successive generations of viewers have watched these films for the games of one-upmanship and the thunderous speeches, with Sunny Deol’s “taareekh pe taareekh” (“date after date”) scene from Damini remaining the gold standard 32 years after the film’s release.

Thankfully, Kesari Chapter 2 star Akshay Kumar — once again playing the role of a savior and true-blue patriot — doesn’t listen to this judge. As lawyer and statesman C. Sankaran Nair, he proceeds to deliver high-decibel theatrics which aren’t very realistic, but which are satisfying to watch, especially when he deploys expletives against the British. Though these events take place...

Earlier in an interview right before the release, Deepika shared with us why she decide to be a part of Piku, “The script. You know it’s not a film that only I identify with. I think every woman is going to identify with that character, with that part. I am with the film because we all are working women, we all multi-task, we all try and balance our lives between our work, our relationships, our families, friends, social obligations, trying to find time for ourselves; there is so much that a woman does. I think a woman always multi-tasks beautifully.

When Irrfan Khan Turned Down Ridley Scott – For Not Just One, But Two Hollywood Films
Image
Irrfan Khan Turned Down 2 Hollywood Movies (Photo Credit – Wikipedia/Instagram)

Not many Indian actors get the chance to work with big-shot Hollywood filmmakers in massively mounted movies. On the contrary, late actor Irrfan Khan, known for his nuanced performances across the globe, was not only offered two films helmed by veteran director Ridley Scott, but he also turned down both of them. Scroll down to know the names of these films and why the actor rejected them.

Body of Lies (Release Year – 2008)

The first Ridley Scott movie that Irrfan Khan turned down was the action thriller ‘Body of Lies’. Had Irrfan Khan been in the film, he would have shared screen space with two seasoned Hollywood actors, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. As per a report published in Times of India, the ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ actor reportedly turned it down because it simply didn’t work out. The role was eventually essayed by Mark Strong.

Shoojit Sircar On 7 Years Of His Finest Work – October starring Varun Dhawan
Image
Released in 2018, October, starring Varun Dhawan, is a special Shoojit Sircar directed drama, considered one of the standout films of his career. He talks with Subhash K Jha about the personal aspects of the film, his thoughts on the performances by Banita Sandhu and Varun Dhawan, and so much more.

Shoojit, do you think October would have worked with a more mature actor than Varun Dhawan?

No, absolutely not. I think absolutely, you know, terrific in terms of cast. I wouldn’t have imagined better than that.

So, would you change anything if you had to remake the film?

Nothing in this, this one film that I would go with whatever I have done, I think I’m quite, actually I’m quite glad about it. Varun especially completely surprised me with his delicate handling of emotions and so much of compassion and empathy that the character required. He brought in those moments so effortlessly.

This Day That Year: A Look Back At Shoojit Sircar’s October
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Shoojit Sircar’s wonderful October, which starred Varun Dhawan as it turns 7 in another great installment of This Day That Year.

Shoojit Sircar’s delicately drawn love story is about an annoyingly self-important hotel concierge (Varun Dhawan) and his softspoken colleague (newcomer Banita Sandhu) who slips and falls into a coma. Did she give him a hint of her feelings for him before she lost consciousness? This was an audacious and daring premise for a love story. But then, when has Sircar ever played the game by the rules? He breaks them with tender care and gives us a romance as wispy and gossamer as Shakti Samanta’s all-time classic Amar Prem, without R D Burman’s timeless songs.

This is the problem with romantic films today. The soul may have music. But the music hardly ever has a soul. When Varun Dhawan was deeply effective...

Revisiting The Ott Content In March
Image
March 2025 would be remembered for being one of the most fertile months on the Ott in recent times. While Stephen Graham’s Adolescence struck a chord all across the globe, in India, its success was a revelation. Yes, Netflix has much to be proud of. Adolescence has opened up debates worldwide on the parent-child relationship.

Do you really know what your child is up to? Just pray he is watching Dupahiya on Amazon. To me, this delightful take on bucolic Bachchanalia was a bigger triumph than Adolescence for two reasons: one, it is far tougher to keep the humorous momentum alive in episode after episode rather than revel in the mood of grimness. Also, I would prefer to take pride in something homespun.

Netflix’s Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, too, made India’s Ott platform a place of prideful achievement. A coiling-recoiling raga of rage plays itself out in the...

Subhash K Jha Remembers Nishikant Kamat As Rocky Handsome Clocks 9, Nishikant Speaks
Image
2020 was especially cruel to our entertainment industry. One by one, we lost Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, (music composer) Wajid Khan, Basu Chatterjee, Sushant Singh Rajput, Saroj Khan, Jagdeep, S. P Balasubramaniam, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Nishikant Kamat.

Nishikant Kamat’s going; I took it personally. Though I had never met him, we shared a certain bonding. Whenever he called, he would speak in that soft, respectful voice and tell me that I should not mind if he doesn’t respond to my messages immediately as he travelled a lot.

I first reached out to Nishikant after I saw his directorial debut, that exceptional Marathi film Dombivali West in 2005, which was quickly remade into Tamil as Evano Oruvan with Madhavan in the lead. Nishikant quickly became a successful director in Bollywood. But he hardly had any friends in the Mumbai film industry except John Abraham, with whom he did the successful Force and Rocky Handsome.

Good things are being said about this political thriller. There isn’t even much competition at the ticket windows, except Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which is in its fifth week. But the cine-goers still don’t seem very interested in The Diplomat.

This Day That Year: A Refocus on Ritesh Batra’s Photograph
Image
For this installment of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha refocuses on Ritesh Batra’s Photograph.

After The Lunchbox, why did Ritesh Batra let us down so miserably with Photograph? Think about it. It had everything going for it. A director whose first film The Lunchbox became the most beloved Indian film since Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali and who has since then worked with international icons like Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling.

Photograph featured a cast and a lead pair that looked tempting if not entirely inviting, and most of all, it was meant to be the Nri director’s homage to the city he loves the most Mumbai.

But Mumbai in Batra’s Photograph looks like a city that is losing its sparkle and drowning in its dreams. The fact that the characters are flat and the presentation is listless could have something to...

“Scrapper Is One of The Most Neglected Films In Recent Times” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
This small British film with a big heart, should be on top of every movie lover’s list. Scrapper is warm, tender, sincere, and very shy about sentimentalizing the father-daughter reunion story.

Debutant director Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper is unlike other films of the genre that we have seen and loved, from Shoojit Sircar’s Piku to Florian Zeller’s The Father. Scrapper is an odd, fey, cranky, capricious dive into a troubled relationship. We are taken deep into the odd bonding between a daughter who has never known a father, and a man who is failed as a father but is eager to learn the ropes of parenting from scratch.

All this would probably create the impression of a grand, dramatic tearjerker. This, Scrapper would hate to be. It is a lean often mean tale told with vinegary shots of humour and irony. The very idea of a 12-year-old...

Where Are Vidya Balan, Pratik Gandhi? The Iifa Nominations Get It Right, But Not Always
Image
In this special feature, Subhash K Jha takes a look at the Iifa nominations and shares his thoughts on who was snubbed and who should take home the prize.

Was Ravi Kishan really a supporting actor in Laapata Ladies? And were Sparsh Shrivastav and Nitanshi Goel the lead actor and actresses in Kiran Rao’s gem on ditzy spousal swaps?

Laapata Ladies would have worked just as well with any two new eager beavers.

Not nominating Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi for Sirsha Guha Thakurta’s wonderful Do Aur Do Pyar, or for that matter not nominating Applause Entertainment’s Do Aur Do Pyar for any of the major categories reminds me of the time when the music and songs of Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah composed by Ghulam Mohammed, lost the Filmfare award to Shankar-Jaikishan’s Beimaan in 1972. Errrr, does anyone remember a single song from Beimaaan today?

Abhishek Bachchan: A Personal Profile by Subhash K Jha On Abhishek’s Birthday
Image
The first time I spoke to Abhishek was also the first time he spoke to the press. “You’re the one person Dad asked me to speak to,” he told me. There was no trace of nervousness in his voice, no tentativeness, and certainly no fear of the unknown.

This was a week before the release of J.P. Dutta’s Refugee. Much water has flown under the bridge since then.

Abhishek and I share a very special bond.

Chronologically, I come right in the middle of Abhishek and his Dad. So I am able to share a warm bonding with both.

Abhishek is hard to beat in arguments. He talks you down with such intense velocity that you are left looking helplessly around for help. The last time it happened, I looked pleadingly at his Dad for help. Ab Sr smiled and shrugged, like a referee who had left the fighters to their own devices.

The Mehta Boys Trailer Review: Boman Irani-Avinash Tiwary Bring Anti-Thesis Of Deepika Padukone’s Piku & We’re Placing Our Bets High!

The Mehta Boys Trailer Review: Boman Irani’s Directorial Debut Might Sail! (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Almost 10 years ago, we saw a very irritated Deepika Padukone trying to babysit an arrogant and difficult father in Amitabh Bachchan but making this father-daughter relationship work like magic in Shoojit Sircar’s Piku because of love and compassion for their relationship! 10 years later, Boman Irani and Avinash Tiwary bring an exact anti-thesis in The Mehta Boys!

The trailer for Boman Irani’s directorial debut has been dropped, and honestly, the glimpse is endearing enough to place our bets on this film rightfully, and hopefully, this is a winning bet! The film has Boman playing a rigid father struggling to co-exist with his son Avinash Tiwary.

The Mehta Boys seems to be a captivating and emotional story about a father and a son forced to live together under some circumstances, and both of them cannot bear each other.

The 24 Best Indian Films of 2024
Image
2024 ultimately proved to be an interesting year for Indian cinema. Tentpole franchise releases collected a lot of box office cash, with “Stree 2: Sarkate ka Aatank” and “Pushpa 2: The Rule” both entering the top ten highest grossing Indian films of all time, and new franchise establishing “Kalki 2898 Ad” joining them on the list. Box-office numbers did not equate strong critical word for the protest though, with the majority of good word-of-mouth going once again to regional cinema. Prime among those remained Malayalam cinema, who started the year strong, with a quality release almost every month all the way to the end of the year. Tamil cinema too registered a few release of note, with “Maharaja” becoming the highest grossing Indian film in China upon its release there. Hindi cinema, despite the general opinion of being in regression, also managed to make its presence known, even if noteworthy releases were few and far in-between.

Shoojit Sircar
Every Shoojit Sircar Movies, Ranked
Shoojit Sircar
One of the more promising and consistent Indian filmmakers of this generation, Shoojit Sircar is most well-known for his steady, yet lightly feathered, bereft melodrama exploration of the human condition. Heavily leaning into the documentary style of storytelling, Sircar’s filmmaking is characterized heavily by unobtrusive use of the camera, hard cuts, and a vignette-heavy narrative that manages to encapsulate both the individualism as well as the collective nature of any political or historical event. It’s an extraordinary filmography, which is as remarkable as it is unassuming, simply because of the consistency of the quality of Shoojit Sircar’s movies.

8. Yahaan (2005) Platform – YouTube

Relatively weak in his filmography but no less impressive, “Yahaan” is also the first of two films where Sircar deals with a political conflict, albeit set as the backdrop rather than heavily foregrounded, and follows the story of a Hindu army officer, Captain Aman (Jimmy Shergill...

I Want to Talk Review: Abhishek Bachchan’s Career-Best Performance
Image
I Want to Talk portrays Arjun Sen, an engaging advertising executive facing a cancer diagnosis. Based on Arjun Sen’s memoir, Raising a Father, the film shows his path through survival and family relationships, focusing on the changing connection between Arjun and his teenage daughter, Reya.

The film presents both illness and the rediscovery of family ties, seen through a father coming to terms with death while dealing with the results of his past decisions.

Director Shoojit Sircar tells this story with subtle touches. The film combines gentle humor and deep feeling, staying away from excessive drama through simple, genuine moments. Sircar uses silence, minor movements, and visual scenes to create real experiences that touch viewers deeply.

‘I Want To Talk’ Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: Did Arjun Run In The Marathon?
Image
For starters, I Want to Talk could have been an American film. Our persistent protagonist could have been an American man. Shoojit Sircar’s latest is already set in the USA, and it does look a lot like some post 2010 American indies. Even at heart, the approach is very non-bollywood – which probably is the reason for it turning out to be a box office bomb. But from start to end, it is very much clear that this is exactly how Sircar wanted to tell the story – with all his usual quirks, his typical brand of humor and some very ear pleasing Taba Chake songs thrown in the middle. Those songs – despite just being used as narrative tools – are the only thing making I Want to Talk an Indian movie. Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that the story is, in fact, inspired by cancer survivor Arjun Sen. Abhishek Bachchan,...

When Yami Gautam Revealed Her Parents’ Reaction To Ayushmann Khurrana-Led Vicky Donor: “This Is So…”

How Did Yami Gautam’s Parents React To The Concept Of Her Debut Film Vicky Donor With Ayushmann Khurrana? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Bollywood icons Yami Gautam and Ayushmann Khurrana debuted with Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor in 2012. At the India Today Conclave South 2018, Yami openly talked about how she got her first debut film in Bollywood. “That was the phase when I was auditioning in full swing. At that point of time, I also had the opportunity of a very conventional launch. I was absolutely on my own, every work that I was doing was my stepping stone. There was nobody there to back me,” she said.

She further added, “Fortunately I have never had an incident that would discourage me from working in an industry. For me, as an artist, it never mattered to me what language the film was in. I just wanted to do really good work,...

Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, and Deepika Padukone in Pathaan (2023)
The 10 Best Hindi Movies of 2024
Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, and Deepika Padukone in Pathaan (2023)
2024 for Hindi movies was like a kickback to the countless number of Box-office turners we got last year. After the sheer storm that movies like Pathaan, Jawan, Animal, and Gadar 2 brought out at the Box Office (their questionable quality aside), 2024 turned out to be a year where Hindi cinema got its mojo back – in particular the little gems that often go unnoticed.

Sure there was the usual pile of absolute garbage across all fronts and genres, but this year could be seen as a slightly better outing for Bollywood. Thanks in large part to some small-budgeted fares that had minor ambitions and even minor Box office runs. However, for those of us who like to go out of our way to get to the core of such movies, it was a good time.

In the following list, I’d like to point out those movies that were competently made,...

Abhishek Bachchan Says Actors Shouldn’t Consider Themselves Stars, Calls Them “Well-Paid, Pampered Puppets”
Image
Why Did Abhishek Bachchan Calls Actors “Well-Paid, Pampered Puppets?” ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Abhishek Bachchan is a prominent name in Indian cinema, and much of this is due to his versatility and grounded personality. The son of legendary actors Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, he carved a niche in the tinsel town with movies like Guru, Yuva, and Dhoom. As the son of a great star, Abhishek has always had to prove his own merit.

His recent film, I Want To Talk, directed by Shoojit Sircar, has been earning praise from the critics for his compelling portrayal of a terminally ill man grappling with existential questions. While the movie is going great within itself with all its content and storytelling, Bachchan has hit the news in reality for his recent comments on actors.

I Want To Talk Box Office Day 2

The Abhishek Bachchan starrer had opened at a mere 25 lakhs on its first day. This was not only the lowest opening for any Hindi film in 2024 but also one of the lowest openings in Junior Bachchan’s career. On its second day, the film saw a rise of 43%. It earned 44 lakhs on its second day. However, the numbers are still below the 1 crore mark, which is not a very good sign for the film.

I Want To Talk (2024) Movie Review: Resilience of the Human Spirit Expressed with Humorous, Feathery Touches
Shoojit Sircar
Shoojit Sircar’s latest exploration of human beings’ resilience in existing with disease plaguing one’s body, tackled humorously, is rather muted in the humor but no less effective than 2015’s “Piku.” The similarities with “Piku” don’t end there. After all, Sircar dealt there too with an ailing father and the exploration of that father’s relationship with his daughter. Both “Piku” (2015) and “I Want To Talk” (2024) also share a Bachchan family member as one of the central leads. However, “I Want to Talk” is more focused, almost solipsistically so, towards Arjun Sen, played here by Abhishek Bachchan.

Adapting the true story of laryngeal cancer survivor Arjun Sen, who would go on to live far beyond the 100-day expectancy as diagnosed by the doctors, the film by Sircar while adapting a screenplay by Ritsh Shah, is a much more low-key affair. The film’s relationship with the usual Bollywood comic melodrama,...
