Avatar: The Last Airbender – Toph’s Greatest Feat Was Never Metalbending, It Was Something Else Entirely
Image
Toph Beifong was arguably one of the most gifted benders of her time, not only managing to master her element at an early age (so much so that she gave grown men a run for their money) but also inventing a whole new bending style. However, Toph’s greatest achievement, at least in her eyes, is not related to bending or fighting, but in the bonds that she made.

After being isolated and being treated like she was made of glass her whole life, Aang and his friends not only made Toph feel like an equal, but they forged a friendship with her that assuaged the exact fears and anxieties that Toph had.

One ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Episode Made Me Realize Katara Is the Reason Aang Spared Fire Lord Ozai
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender is known for its strong emphasis on morality throughout the show. Aang finds himself in an interesting predicament when he realizes that the preservation of his culture is solely up to him. He becomes increasingly reluctant to slay Fire Lord Ozai, desperately seeking an alternative solution to defeating the tyrant.

Interestingly, this is something that fans had seen in Avatar: The Last Airbender before, specifically in the storyline where Zuko offers Katara a chance for vengeance. Katara does not struggle as much as Aang does with the question, but the conclusion she reaches is very much similar to that which is echoed in Aang’s story in later episodes.

The Southern Raiders not only serve as a foreshadowing of Aang’s struggle- it’s a prototype for it Katara in Avatar: The Last Airbender || Credit: Nickelodeon

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Greatest Tragedy Is Iroh and Asami Not Getting to Have a Pai Sho Showdown
Image
General Iroh has been known for his love of Pai Sho, and the same is true for Asami Sato from The Legend of Korra. However, given how the cast of the two shows interacted with each other (through the Spirit Realm or other ways), it would have been fun to see two of the best Pai Sho players in the main casts of the two teams face off against each other.

General Iroh and Asami Sato are both characters that were known for their great intellect and while Iroh was tablet o leverage his experience and knowledge to guide the Avatar, Asami was able to have a calming effect on Korra, showing that these characters would have had a very spirited and emotionally healthy conversation should they have ever met.

Asami could have met Iroh on a trip to the spirit world Korra and Asami holding hands at the end...

Guillermo del Toro Raves About This Controversial Horror Film
Image
If you’re keen to experience a thought-provoking film featuring an unorthodox audition and profound commentary on gender roles and relationship dynamics, we’ve got a picture that might very well scratch that decidedly specific itch. But wait, there’s more! Celebrated director Guillermo del Toro is a fan of the film of which we speak and has even said as much on social media.

With that in mind, you can see all the particulars via the tweet below.

Film: Audition by Takashi Miike. Gorehounds will only get 2 or 3 moments of cringing violence but there's tension throughout.

— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) June 3, 2016

While del Toro is absolutely right that Audition only features gore in brief spurts, that is more than made up for thanks to the undeniably visceral nature of said gore and the almost unbearable baseline of tension prevalent throughout.

Despite Audition’s status as a stone-cold classic, it...

“No, not everyone is queer”: Atla Creator Himself Defended Korra’s Relationship Status in Avatar
Image
Avatar: The Legend of Korra was controversial for a slew of reasons, and one of those was how the creators of the show were treating Korra’s romantic preferences. Bryan Knietzko himself put out a statement defending the choices that they made, defending Korra and Asami’s blossoming feelings for each other.

The Legend of Korra was a show that never outright acknowledged that Korra and Asami had a relationship, but had a very clever way of communicating that they were, in fact together. While the comics were very vocal about the relationship that the duo shared, the show’s choice was to take that route, even without being outright about it.

10 Fights Korra Only Won Because She's the Main Character
Image
In an action/adventure anime like The Legend of Korra, the protagonist might lose some fights, but heroes like Avatar Korra never lose when it counts the most. Korra only lost fights to build up the suspense and drive some dark plot points, but being the protagonist, Korra could never be defeated when the stakes reached their peak. No matter the odds, Korra prevailed anytime her team could not afford to lose.

Even if Korra's plot armor as the protagonist was rather obvious at times, that didn't subtract from the sheer excitement of those fights, and those bender fights were on par with anything fans ever saw in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some fights, in particular, Korra either won because she was the protagonist, or at least survived when her enemies meant to utterly destroy her. The world needed its Avatar, so the plot made sure Korra survived against the...

25 Best Survival Horror Films Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Horror is a rich genre that has almost limitless freedom when it comes to the scary stories that it shares with its audience. Horror is subjective territory, but the genre’s growing versatility means that there’s usually a movie out there that’s guaranteed to frighten everyone. Grueling fights for survival can fuel suspenseful horror movies that embrace humanity’s vulnerability. The plausibility of such scenarios, which often require nothing more supernatural than a bit of bad luck, can be truly terrifying in the hands of a skilled director.

Sprawling apocalypses or grandiose monster attacks can sometimes lack the personal touch and character development that’s present in more intimate survival stories. The horror genre has grown increasingly creative when it comes to these struggles to survive and some of these tense tales hit harder than others. The best of them combine deeply compelling characters with an all-too-believable premise...

The 10 Most Unsettling Movies You’ll Ever See
Image
Filmmaking is a form of self-expression: “The most personal is the most creative”. Remember that? Well, that’s quite true most of the time. This generation of filmmakers, such as Gasper Noe, Lars von Trier, and Michael Haneke, do not hesitate to leave their imprint and personal style on their film, irrespective of how that makes the audience feel. They’ve developed a warning system to offset any unwilling takers and keep their films limited to ‘their’ audience. Beyond these names, there are many films etched in movie history that are similarly eerie in tone. We’ve tried to make a list of such unsettling movies (while deliberately missing out on a few). Let us know in the comments the ones you feel should’ve made the cut.

Honorable Mention: The Skin I Live In (2011)

10 Most Influential The Legend of Korra Characters Who Changed the World
Image
Some characters in The Legend of Korraare definitely more powerful benders or martial artists than others, but sheer combat power alone isn't enough to reshape the world or make an impact on society. It's also important for certain characters to have a great deal of influence, having the right charisma, leadership, ideas, and/or authority to convince other people to do things their way. Some characters use their influence to benefit society, while others use their influence for selfish or destructive goals.

The most influential characters in The Legend of Korra are the ones who had the biggest impact on the plot, using their leadership and charisma to command armies or businesses to make a difference in the world. Some of the most influential characters also knew what to say to convince other individuals to change their ways or accept dangerous missions, which lends a whole different kind of strength...

After Uzumaki, I’m Pretty Sure Berserk Doesn’t Need an Anime Adaptation and Kentaro Miura Is to Blame
Image
When Uzumaki anime was announced, it took the internet by storm. Like most readers and viewers, I too was excited to see how it’d play out. However, to my disappointment, the anime was reduced to a comedy and failed the manga tremendously. This is precisely why some series are better left alone.

10 Powers & Skills Avatar Korra Has That Aang Doesn't
Image
In The Legend of Korra, Avatar Korra proves herself capable of doing so many amazing thigns Aang wasn't able to accomplish in the previous cycle, and plenty more on top of that. In many ways, Avatar Korra pushed the boundaries of what the Avatar Cycle is capable of, and she needed all those skills when villains like Amon and Zaheer came along. It also made Korra more versatile than even Aang was in his prime.

Some of Korra's unique skills and powers represented who she was as a person, while others were a reflection of the world Korra lived in. In all fairness, Korra's world called for some skills that didn't even exist yet in Aang's pre-industrial world, showing how the Avatar needs to keep up with the times. After leaving the Southern Water Tribe compound, Korra learned all those worldly skills to become a proper Avatar, and her growth was nothing short of astonishing.

Who Does Korra End Up With In The Avatar Universe?
Image
The 2010s and 2020s saw a surge of American children's media that put queerness front and center. Take the work of N.D. Stevenson, such as the Netflix series "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" and the animated film "Nimona," based on his graphic novel. From "Steven Universe" to "The Owl House," cartoons have gotten a lot gayer in the last decade.

And it is almost precisely a decade because Nickelodeon's "The Legend of Korra" is the show that broke down the dam in 2014. In the show's fourth and final season, Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her best friend, Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). A sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" is set in a fantasy world where people can bend one of the four elements. Korra, as the reincarnation of world defender the Avatar, can bend all four. If kids can accept a world that fantastical,...

10 Most Ridiculous Things To Happen In Avatar: The Last Airbender
Image
One of the best parts of Avatar: The Last Airbenderis its delightful sense of humor. After all, Avatar is geared for younger audiences, meaning it has youthful heroes who say and do all kinds of wacky things during their epic fantasy adventure to save the world in the Hundred-Year War. Nearly every episode has at least one or two over-the-top gags, and some of those ridiculous events are fan-favorites.

The most ridiculous things to happen in Avatar were rarely important plot points, but viewers still enjoyed them as a great way to relieve the tension and make the characters more likable. That includes pratfalls, clever dialogue to make audiences laugh, and even a few cases where a character thought they were being totally serious but ended up looking ridiculous.

The 30 Best Anime Trios Of All Time, Ranked
Image
When two Japanese anime characters form a duo, those characters either complete one another or challenge each other, and there is always a sense of co-dependency. In a trio, however, there are ongoing tensions, a strong sense of competition, and rivalry that can also become jealousy, making the whole group much more interesting. However, many of the most iconic trios, such as Jesse, James and Meowth and Winry, Alphonse and Edward, have an underlying current of true care.

There are many iconic trios in the anime world, some composed entirely of villains, others of heroes, and some a mix of the two. Some trios are strong and determined main characters; others feature shy and quiet protagonists; still others are made of remarkable side characters. All these trios have one thing in common: they make the story unique and truly memorable.

10 Most Dangerous Enemies in The Legend of Korra, Ranked by Strength
Image
Avatar Korra faced countless terrifying threats during her time in The Legend of Korra, many of them wielding bizarre or even brand-new powers and abilities to threaten Team Avatar. That included anti-bending radicals with advanced technology, an Airbender with a historic ability, terrorists who can destroy the terran itself, and metalbenders who have honed their fighting style to perfection.

Avatar Korra overcame all of these threats with either her powers in the Avatar State or the aid of her friends, but it was never easy, nor should it be. Eihi Shiina in Audition (1999)
Audition | New version of Japanese horror in the works at Focus Features
Eihi Shiina in Audition (1999)
Ryū Murakami’s cult 1990s Japanese horror thriller novel Audition is heading to the screen once again, courtesy of Speak No Evil writer Christian Tafdrup.

It is not hyperbole to say that Takeshi Miike’s Audition is easily one of the most memorable horror films of the 1990s. Miike is well known for his ultraviolent films, including Ichi The Killer and Imprint – the latter being an episode of the Masters Of Horror series deemed so gratuitously violent it was banned from broadcast, eventually surfacing on DVD. By contrast, Audition is a masterclass in restraint, the tension building to unbearable levels before its horrifying finale.

Based on the 1997 novel by Ryū Murakami and released on 1999, the plot follows Shigeharu Aoyama, played by Ryo Ishibashi, a lonely middle-aged widower who hatches a scheme to find a girlfriend by holding fake film auditions. Here he meets Asami, played by Eihi Shiina, a sweet,...

Audition remake to be directed by Speak No Evil’s Christian Tafdrup
Image
Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup brought the incredibly bleak film Gæsterne, a.k.a. Speak No Evil (read our review Here) into the world back in 2022 – and when the American remake was released last year, Tafdrup let it be known that he wasn’t impressed by the new take on his story, because it didn’t leave viewers traumatized like the original film did. Now, Deadline has revealed that Tafdrup is on board to direct a remake of director Takashi Miike’s dark and twisted 1999 Japanese film Audition… and we can probably rest assured that he’s not going to take it easy on viewers with his take on the material.

Based on a 1997 horror thriller novel by Ryū Murakami, Miike’s Audition was scripted by Daisuke Tengan and has the following synopsis: Widower Aoyama decides to start dating again. Aided by a film-producer friend, Aoyama uses auditions for a fake...

10 Best Legend of Korra Characters (Who Aren't Avatar Korra)
Image
Like Avatar: The Last Airbender before it, The Legend of Korra is packed with fantastic and memorable characters. This includes major heroes, villains, and everything in between, though some of them are better and more important than others. Naturally, the best and most essential character is Avatar Korra herself, which fans can take for granted, so the question is who else is on her level.

Each of the four seasons of The Legend of Korra answered that question by ushering in some fantastic, important, and all-around excellent characters who did a lot to make this cartoon such a success. They include heartfelt and inspiring heroes who fight for good, wicked yet intriguing villains who helped reshape the world, and some characters who skirted the line between good and evil with their unique perspectives and ambitions.

10 Anime Villains Who Would Have Won If They Actually Tried
Image
Some of the content featured in this article contains information from Jujutsu Kaisen's manga that has not yet been aired in the anime.

Villains are a hot commodity in the anime community, with many of them being even more popular among fans than the protagonists are. Antagonists from series, such as Monster, Hunter x Hunter and Berserk stand out due to several factors, such as their complex characterization, intricate motivations or fascinating powers. In some series, the antagonists are very well-written and tend to override their protagonist counterparts, due to the lack of character dimension or bland ambition that holds some protagonists back.

Another reason people enjoy antagonists is because they are often relatable. Perhaps not in their actions, but the motivation behind them. Some of anime’s villains are seeking peace or justice, which are goals a lot of people support. Many antagonists are skilled and formidable combatants, who...

Only True Horror Fans Can Handle This Stomach Churning Thriller
Image
Horror films have existed since the dawn of the medium. Shortly after the invention of film, French director George Mellies created Le Manoir du Diable (The Haunted Castle), likely the world’s first horror flick. Though silent, The Haunted Casztle included comparably quaint scares of the 1890s. Since then, the genre has evolved considerably, and a movie won’t get many screams from a man in a bedsheet anymore. It needs something more, something substantial and shocking. By the dawn of the new millennia, one certainly couldn’t produce something akin to Mellies’ The Haunted Castle and expect a terrified audience. Moreover, these films faced a veritable haul of predecessors. By this point, filmmakers had thoroughly terrified audiences with all the traditional scares. Ghosts, ghouls, and demons were no longer novel concepts.

This was the conundrum facing Takashi Miike, and he answered with a film as controversial as it was groundbreaking.

10 Anime Heroes Who Have Everything They Need to Become Terrifying Villains

Shonen anime is all about its heroes. Without their efforts to rise above the challenges that are thrown in their paths, many of the worlds they occupy would meet a brutal end. Because these protagonists are usually a symbol of hope for their world, just the thought of them being on the opposite side of the battle between good and evil is terrifying to consider. Their often overpowered abilities could devastate entire worlds, reaffirming once and for all that it's a good thing they chose heroics over villainy.

10 Things We Want to See in a Potential Korra Sequel Series

The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Last Airbender's highly disputed sequel, ended 10 years ago in 2014, and the franchise has yet to release another show about the bender who takes over after Korra. However, according to the Avatar franchise's official news site, "AvatarNews," a series featuring an Earth Avatar is currently in the works and is set to release in late 2025.

Many projects within the Avatar franchise have been announced, yet very few other sources have confirmed the production of a new animated TV series. Nickelodeon's Interference Was the Real Villain of 'The Legend of Korra'
Image
After the major success of Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, the creative team decided to make a sequel series set in the same universe of elemental benders. Under the direction of original creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the sequel show The Legend of Korra debuted in April 2012. The show follows a young Water Tribe woman named Korra, who is the next Avatar in the cycle following the death of Aang. Across four seasons, Korra progresses from a hot-headed, impulsive girl into a spiritual, fully realized Avatar ready for the next phase of her life.

While The Last Airbender was aimed at children, this series appealed to teens, introducing more complex romantic side plots and more brutal fight scenes. It even reintroduced older versions of familiar characters from the original story, such as Katara, Toph, and Iroh, as Korra's guides, maintaining the connection to Aang's life. Sadly, compared to its companion series,...

10 Best Anime like My Hero Academia
Image
My Hero Academia has taken the world of shnen by storm. It's an amazing, genuine series that features some of the best characters and fights in modern anime. The story is set around Izuku Midoriya, a Quirkless Boy in a world filled with Quirks. Everything changes when he acquires One For All, the second-strongest Quirk in existence. His story is a straightforward one that tells the tale of a good person who just wants to protect his friends and the world around him.

While My Hero Academia does a great job of separating itself from the competition, there are a few shows out there that are worthy of comparison. To be a good My Hero Academia comparison, a show doesn't necessarily need to be about superheroes and high schools, but it should be about a protagonist defying the odds to do what's right.

How Nickelodeon Sabotaged The Legend of Korra
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

With the live-action Avatar series on Netflix, along with an upcoming trilogy of theatrical sequel films, fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been relishing the fact that, nearly 20 years after the premiere of the original Nickelodeon series, the franchise is still as strong and relevant as ever. Its sequel series, The Legend of Korra, has also enjoyed an incredibly large amount of success even almost 10 years after its finale. With this in mind, many probably would not have guessed that when the latter series originally aired in the early 2010s, it wasn't exactly treated as well as it should have been by the network.

Much like Avatar, the series has become a collective favorite of the animation community, with many regarding it as one of the best spin-offs of all time; and just like its predecessor, it dared to be different...

15 Things About The Legend of Korra That Make No Sense
Image
A successor series that launched four years after the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra expands on the Avatar universe while following an entirely new Avatar a hot-headed, self-assured girl named Korra. Throughout Korra's joruney, she struggles with being exposed to many of the world's harsh realities while trying to master her powers and use them to benefit the people of Republic City. While some fans believe the series inherently worse than its predecessor, The Legend of Korra is generally well-liked and is considered especially important for adding more same-sex relationship acceptance to kids' media.

Even so, there are definitely aspects where The Legend of Korra struggles, and fans are left scratching their heads at certain story developments or how characters get used. Romance is used in awkward and unfulfilling ways, Korra unlocks powers that shouldn't be possible at incredibly convenient times, and characters like Asami...

Since then, Sanji has become much stronger thanks to his newfound use of Haki, the development of Diable Jambe, and even his latent genetic modifications awakening.

By now, Sanji can take on the strongest foes in One Piece's world alongside his fellow Straw Hats, but things might be different if Sanji paid a visit to other shonen realms. There, the kicking chef would meet his true equals, fighters who wield abilities beyond anything Sanji has seen with Devil Fruits and Haki. 'Mountain of Stress': Jujutsu Kaisen Director Finally Explains the Real Reason for a Major 'Fall Into Darkness'
Yûichi Nakamura, Asami Seto, Yuma Uchida, and Jun'ya Enoki in Jujutsu Kaisen (2020)
Season 2 of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime chronicles a critical episode from Satoru Gojo's youth in which his best friend Suguru Geto decides that the world would be better off without any non-sorcerers. During a joint interview with several members of Jujutsu Kaisen's cast and crew, director Shota Goshozono explained the reason for what he refers to as Geto's "fall into darkness."

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Geto is introduced as a talented sorcerer with purely noble ambitions. However, his resolve falters after an eye-opening incident involving two child sorcerers and a town driven mad with grief and anger. Per Oricon, Goshozono discusses how, for him, Geto's fall from grace is also related to the ongoing struggles within the larger jujutsu sorcerer community. "For [Gojo's Past arc], I had my own theme in mind: how to interpret the reasons for Geto's fall into darkness and his actions and incorporate them into the anime.

Best Legend of Korra Fights from Book Two, Ranked

The first season of The Legend of Korra featured some outstanding battle scenes between the new Team Avatar and the Equalist movement, and Book Two: Spirits had even better fights as the lore and combat system evolved. In Book Two, the members of Team Avatar faced brand-new challenges as the Water Tribe fought a civil war and Varrick and Unalaq advanced their own schemes. Even if those fights didn't always go Team Avatar's way, it was still hugely entertaining to watch Korra, Mako, Bolin, Asami, and their various allies take on the forces of evil to save the world once again.
