Yahoo Sports’ Paris Olympics Plan? A Team of Gold Medalists as Correspondents (Exclusive)
Image
Later this summer, every news outlet in the world will descend on Paris to cover the 2024 Olympic Games.

It’s a crowded media environment, complicated further by the fact that here in the U.S., NBC is the exclusive rights partner, with video and behind-the-scenes access no other outlet can match.

So what can a sports outlet that wants to compete do? For Yahoo Sports, it decided to hire a bevy of gold medalists to serve as its Olympics correspondents.

The sports platform has hired seven-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, who will provide coverage and analysis of track and field events; three-time gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, who will cover beach volleyball; five-time gold medalist Missy Franklin and silver medalist Katie Hoff, who will provide coverage of swimming events; and gold medalist Shawn Johnson East, who will cover gymnastics events for Yahoo.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,...

NBC Launches New Streaming Service That Bets on High School and Amateur Sports
Image
Forget the NFL or NBA, NBC is betting that the next big thing in streaming might be your local high school football game.

The media giant is launching a new streaming service that’s part ESPN+, part YouTube and part MasterClass, meant to appeal to families, schools and communities with amateur sports teams.

The service, SportsEngine Play, will stream live matches from amateur teams (think high schools, etc.). The company says it has 90 cameras installed in 85 venues; however, coaches or spectators can also stream matches live to the service via their own smartphones or iPads, and NBC Sports is trying to encourage as many schools and coaches as possible to take advantage of the streaming capabilities.

Matches will also be available on-demand.

The service will also launch with complementary content featuring professional athletes, a MasterClass-esque offering with guides for specific sports and general advice for dealing with pressure or mental health,...

NBC Sports Next Launches SportsEngine Play, A Subscription Streaming Outlet Aimed At Booming Youth And Amateur Sector
Image
NBC Sports Next, a subsidiary of NBC Sports focused on golf as well as youth and amateur sports, has launched a new streaming outlet called SportsEngine Play.

The service is billed by the company as the first of its kind, providing a range of live and on demand video of youth and amateur sporting events and filling a void in a growing sector of American corporate and social life. While a number of digital players offer various features for youth and amateur team members and families, the market is fragmented and social media giants hosting youth sports video don’t offer bespoke services. SportsEngine Play, which is created on a foundation built by NBC Sports, is aiming to be a centralized hub for organizations, leagues, coaches and parents.

Recent estimates from analysts have pegged the global youth sports market at more than $37 billion, which is twice the size of the NFL.

Natalia Bryant Reveals Why She Quit Volleyball After Dad Kobe and Sister Gianna's Deaths
Kobe Bryant
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Natalia Bryant inherited her late father Kobe Bryant's love of sports. While he will forever be remembered as a basketball legend, his 18-year-old daughter is all about volleyball.  As Natalia explained to Teen Vogue for its September cover story, her passion for the game developed at age 9, when her mother, Vanessa Bryant, took her to watch beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor compete at the 2012 London Olympics. The pro won the gold medal that year along with teammate Kerri Walsh Jennings.  "I was watching and [my mom] was like, 'Nani, you're going to love this sport. You're going to love volleyball. NBA Players Becoming Virtual Coaches With Famer Deal (Exclusive)
Image
NBA players are taking all the training tips they learned from years of experience to mobile devices around the world.

The union that represents NBA players has signed a global partnership with Famer, a mobile sports coaching and mentoring platform that in the coming months will enable the athletes and their trainers to share custom training videos with kids and their parents. That part is free.

For an additional cost, however, users will also be able to upload their own videos and receive direct feedback from the players. The company and players would share that revenue.

The Nbpa Training Ground, as the virtual program will be called, will be presented by Spalding. Its launch next week will include participation from a handful of players, including Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic, Andre Drummond of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz, as well as trainers whose clients are professional athletes.

NBCUniversal Expects More Than $1.2 Billion in Ads for Tokyo Olympics
Madison Avenue is rushing to get money down in NBCUniversal’s broadcast of the 2020 Olympics from Tokyo, the latest big TV-sports event to spark heavier demand from advertisers at a time when finding truly big media audiences has grown more difficult.

NBCUniversal said it is on track to take in more than the $1.2 billion in national advertising it secured for its 2016 broadcast of the Rio Olympics, currently the company’s record. NBCU has secured more than $1 billion in national advertising commitments for its Tokyo Olympics broadcast with eight months to go before the Games start, says Dan Lovinger, executive vice president of ad sales for NBC Sports – more than the company had negotiated with eight months to go before its 2016 event.

A good chunk of interest in the Games has come from advertisers who have never taken part in them. “More than half” of the marketers who have signed up are new,...

"It broke us down, and it was like 'April, I need you.' 'Kerri, I need you.' " While competing with Ross last summer, Walsh Jennings, 37, dislocated her right shoulder twice.

Along with a tank top and shorts, Josh was also sporting some facial hair on the beach, a bit of a different look for the usually clean-shaven star. We last saw Josh at the Teen Choice Awards recently, where he posed for photos with Scream Queens' Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, and Keke Palmer and picked up the award for choice movie actor for his role in Mockingjay - Part 1. Josh also had a cute reunion with his costars Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth at Comic-Con in July as they promoted the final film in the Hunger Games franchise,...

Anderson Silva: Celebs & Fans React To His Horrific Leg Injury
After the Ufc icon suffered a horrible, leg-bending injury on Dec. 28, stars and fans rushed to Twitter to express their shock over seeing such a gruesome incident, and also to send their prayers to the ailing fighter.

At almost the exact same time Anderson Silva hit the ground after breaking his leg during his Ufc title fight against Chris Weidman, stars, athletes, and fans took to Twitter to post their reactions. And because Anderson’s leg-bending break was the worst sports injury since Kevin Ware‘s bone-protruding injury in March, there were too many reactions of shock, horror, and sadness to count.

Anderson Silva’s Injury: Stars & Athletes React

Though some celebrities were tweeting about the gruesome injury, most of the notable reactions came from fellow athletes — including Joe Theismann, who suffered a horrific leg break of his own in the ’80s – who wanted to wish Anderson a fast and safe recovery:

Jon Hamm
The ESPYs: Jon Hamm is mad funny as host
Jon Hamm
Welcome to the ESPYs! You know, that awards show that happens on a Wednesday on Espn? Yeah, they give out awards to athletes who are like “Thanks, but I totally have an actual championship ring back at home.”

I’ve personally never felt the need to watch the awards show, or as host Jon Hamm calls it “the world’s largest gathering of people wearing sunglasses indoors,” but the idea of missing the Mad Men star hosting was too risky to pass up. Those of you who’ve seen Hamm guest on 30 Rock or make a cameo in Bridesmaids knows...

World-renowned tennis player Agnieszka Radwanska, 24, is being dropped as an ambassador of a Catholic youth group in her native Poland after she posed nude for the 2013 edition of the annual Espn The Magazine Body Issue. But you’re most likely headed straight to the nude photo spreads, which begin on page 51. (You’re welcome.) So you’re not “reading” alone, we’ll read along with you.
