Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible Isn’t Over Yet In a recent trends piece from Today.com- of all things, about the curious way Tom Cruise eats popcorn- it was noted that the latest ‘Mission: Impossible’ installment, 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning', is “the eighth and final movie in the franchise.” Tom Cruise- the face and spearhead of the film franchise- has never said he’s done. In fact, at the premiere of 'Dead Reckoning - Part 1', while commenting on Harrison Ford’s return as Indiana Jones in 2023’s 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny', he told The Sydney Morning Herald, “I hope to keep making 'Mission: Impossible' films until I’m [Harrison Ford’s] age.” At the time, Ford was eighty-one. Since then, Cruise has only doubled down. At the New York City premiere of 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning',...

Dead Weight is a 15-minute-long short film that tells the story of Grace, who has survived an apocalyptic event, and is backpacking through the woods all on her own. She comes across Aaron, who has also survived the apocalypse, and is looking for some direction on how to deal with this “new normal.” Initially, Grace is okay with helping Aaron, but eventually, it becomes clear that he is a liability and she needs to get rid of her before he does something drastic to jeopardize both of their lives. I sat down for a virtual chat with director Virginia Root on what she is trying to say about gender roles, humanity, and more through her movie.
Film Fugitives: How did you come up with the idea for Dead Weight and how did it evolve over the process of turning it into a short film?

It has been 13 years since The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm. Given the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the discourse surrounding the "Star Wars" franchise these days, it's easy to forget that Lucasfilm is home to other properties beyond George Lucas' iconic galaxy far, far away. In particular, the "Indiana Jones" franchise, which Lucas co-created with Philip Kaufman before Steven Spielberg came aboard as the films' primary director, is also under the Disney umbrella.
Much like "Star Wars," the "Indiana Jones" property has expanded beyond its original trilogy of films with a television series, polarizing sequels, video games, and attractions at Disney Parks. However, an "Indiana Jones" series has yet to be developed for Disney+, a streaming service that has been dominated by "Star Wars" media since its launch in late 2019. ‘Pavements’ Review: Alex Ross Perry’s Slacker Music Portrait Puts a Sweet, Meta Spin on the Rock Doc
Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. Utopia releases “Pavements” in select theaters Friday, May 2, 2025.
The question Alex Ross Perry asked himself before embarking on the mad, four-faced project that is “Pavements” was: “What if Pavement was the most important band of all time?” It’s a fun idea, and Perry’s commitment to the bit cannot be questioned. An off-Broadway jukebox musical named after their breakthrough debut studio album “Slanted and Enchanted,” a fake “Bohemian Rhapsody”-style biopic starring Joe Keery and Jason Schwartzman, a museum exhibition Perry helped devise and that brims with mostly unimportant memorabilia, and an actual documentary all exist in service of “Pavements.” If the assignment in making a film about Pavement was part sincere, part fuck-you, a dash of incoherent anti-establishment thought and a tablespoon of self-indulgence, “Pavements” understands it perfectly. Making a film about the band any...

Alex Ross Perry has built quite the cult following in the indie film community, as did the band Pavement in the slacker rock community in the ‘90s. It’s a match made in heaven for Pavements, one of the best and most innovative documentaries you will see this year. Although it’s not the most accessible music documentary — in fact, you could go so far as to say it’s downright inaccessible — Alex Ross Perry has created a downright brilliant, genre-defying work of cinema that will knock music- and film-loving fans off their feet.

In Pavements, filmmaker Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell) sets out to present a definitive look at the indie band Pavement, which the movie proclaims is “the world’s most important and influential band.” Although that assessment might not be entirely accurate to reality — it’s much more of a “your favorite musician’s favorite...

Alex Ross Perry is chasing “Pavements” — that is, the fictionalized version of the band that his very real faux music documentary is about.
The “Her Smell” director helms the movie within a movie about Pavement, the ’90s American alternative group. The official synopsis reads: “‘Pavements’ is a movie about Pavement the band — among other things. The latest film from acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry is a documentary that may or may not be entirely true, may or may not be totally sincere, and may or may not be more about the idea of the band — or any band — than a history of the short-lived, passionately loved, commercially marginal ’90s American alternative group Pavement. This unconventional film about a highly unconventional band incorporates a stage musical, rock biopic, gallery exhibition, archival footage, and contemporary observational footage to create a film as irreducible, uncharacterizable, and entertaining as the band and its music.

Lucasfilm was seemingly looking to expand the world of Indiana Jonesonto Disney+, similar to Star Wars, but Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny might have complicated that. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was the fifth and final chapter in the long-running film franchise, and it was highly publicized for being Harrison Ford's final time playing the title role. With Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy seemingly saying only Harrison Ford would play Indiana Jones, there doesn't seem like much growth for the franchise expansion. However, at one point in time, Lucasfilm apparently had a few ideas to expand the series, one that could have fleshed out the supporting characters in Indiana Jones's life.
During the latest episode of the popular movie podcast Blank Check with Griffin & David, co-host Griffin Newman reveals he previously auditioned for an Untitled Lucasfilm animated series that seemingly was an Indiana Jones-style show.

Today, Utopia released the trailer for Alex Ross Perry’s Pavements, an innovative portrayal of the iconic ’90s indie rock band Pavement. The film blends documentary footage, scripted scenes, and a musical stage play featuring songs from the band’s discography. The fictional biopic within the film, Range Life, stars Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Fred Hechinger, Tim Heidecker, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, and Nat Wolff. Out of last year’s New York Film Festival, Slant writer Brad Hanford described it as “Perry’s Cubist portrait finds a fitting balance between reverence and mischievousness.”
Pavements is scheduled to premiere in New York on May 2, followed by Los Angeles on May 9, with a nationwide release on June 6. See below for the film’s trailer.

Six years since his last solo directing feature, Her Smell, Alex Ross Perry returned to the world of rock in a very different way with Pavements. A tribute to Stephen Malkmus’ group, the film jumps between band documentary, biopic (and the making of the biopic), Broadway-musical creation, museum exhibition, and more to try containing the genius of this influential group. After its fall festival premiere, Utopia will give it a release this year, beginning on May 2, and they’ve now released the first trailer after we got a fun teaser at the film within the film. Along with Pavement members, the film also features Joe Keery as frontman Stephen Malkmus, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Fred Hechinger, Tim Heidecker, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, Nat Wolff, and more.

Stranger Things star Joe Keery makes his hilariously melodramatic debut as indie rock great and leader of the “slacktivism” movement, Stephen Malkmus, in the new trailer for Alex Ross Perry’s Pavement movie, Range Life: A Pavement Story.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Harley Quinn season 5, episode 1Harley Quinn season 5 might not have been talked about much before its release due to the focus on James Gunn's DC Universe, but I have to say it will likely turn heads. I'm a fan of the show and the expanded universe it has created, which now includes a Kite Man spinoff series. That kind of worldbuilding, presenting a lived-in world from the start full of established heroes and villains, is exactly what Gunn is going for with the Dcu, and Harley Quinn could teach the franchise some lessons.
Harley Quinn is a 2019 film focusing on the titular character's evolution after severing ties with the Joker. As she seeks to establish herself as an independent force in Gotham City's criminal underworld, the film explores her journey toward becoming Gotham's criminal Queenpin.

In a candid interview with The Guardian, actress Rebecca Hall openly revealed her changing views on working with controversial filmmaker Woody Allen, questioning conventional notions about artist accountability.
Hall, who acted in Allen’s films “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008) and “A Rainy Day in New York” (2018), provided a nuanced perspective on how performers negotiate industry controversies. She explained that her earlier public statement about Allen was misunderstood and does not reflect her current position.
“This is a difficult one for me. It’s quite unusual for me to publicly state anything,” Hall told the newspaper. She made it clear that she regards her primary position as an artist, not an activist. “I make the stuff, that’s how I am political,” she explained.

Rebecca Hall on Why She Has “Regret” Over Past Statement Apologizing for Working on Woody Allen Film
Rebecca Hall is looking back on speaking out about regretting working on Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York.
In 2018, Hall had a small role in Allen’s film A Rainy Day in New York, which also starred Timothée Chalamet, Jude Law and Elle Fanning. After Allen’s daughter Dylan Farrow, accused him of sexually abusing her as a child and women came forward with sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Hall said at the time that she regretted the decision to star in the film. “I see, not only how complicated this matter is, but that my actions have made another woman feel silenced and dismissed,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I regret this decision and wouldn’t make the same one today.”
In an interview with the Guardian published on Sunday, the actress was asked how she now feels about those comments.
“I struggle with this one.

Rebecca Hall said in an interview with The Observer that she does not regret working with Woody Allen despite apologizing once for starring in “A Rainy Day in New York.” Hall has made two movies with Allen: “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Rainy Day,” the latter of which she only filmed on for one day.
Hall came forward in 2018 amid the #MeToo movement to apologize for working with Allen. At the time, Allen’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow was criticizing Hollywood for continuing to work with Allen despite her allegation that he molested her as a child. Hall admitted that Farrow’s new statements on the matter made her rethink her decision to work with Allen again, a choice she had “quickly said yes” to when it was offered because Allen “gave me one of my first significant roles” in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “I have always been grateful.”

The deal was signed with Utopia, which is handling world sales and, the day after the film’s Venice launch, announced it would also distribute theatrically in the U.S. Mubi says it will announce its release plans in the coming months.

The film gets its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival which starts later this month and explores the iconic indie band’s path as they prepare for a sold-out 2022 reunion tour and tracking a musical based on their songs, a museum devoted to their history, and a Hollywood biopic.

Utopia has picked up the U.S. rights to Pavements, director Alex Ross Perry’s musical portrait of the 1990s al-rock band a day after a world premiere in Venice earlier this week.
“One of our favorite filmmakers, one of our favorite bands, Pavements joining Utopia is simply a dream come true. The band’s iconic status has only continued to blossom out of the ’90s and Alex has crafted a film that transcends documentary and questions what the format can be in a surprising and novel way,” Utopia head of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said in a statement on Friday.
Pavements will also have a North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. The musical biopic tracks the influential rock band as they prepare for a 2022 reunion tour in the prism of their earlier accomplishments.
“This multifaceted meta-movie is at once documentary, musical comedy, faux biopic and real museum exhibition.

Utopia has acquired U.S. rights to acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry’s “Pavements,” the day after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
The film debuted to strong reviews, with Variety saying “’Pavements’ dazzles as a spinning plates act,” and Screen describing it as “a joyous, slyly subversive celebration.”
A boundary-breaking look at the seminal band Pavement, the film is edited and produced by filmmaker Robert Greene and will have its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival later this fall.
An examination of the iconic 90s indie band, “Pavements” appears to be just another music documentary, until it doesn’t. A “prismatic, narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, metatextual hybrid,” the film intimately shows the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while simultaneously tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum devoted to their history and a big-budget Hollywood biopic inspired by...

In Alex Ross Perry’s exuberant tribute to Pavement, Tim Heidecker gives a succinct descriptor of what made the band a staple of college radio stations in the ‘90s: “For kids who thought everything was stupid and everything sucked, they were your band.” In an era when rock stars gave up hours doing big hair in the makeup chair to instead wear the flannel they walked in off the street with, the band, fronted by Stephen Malkmus, cultivated a fan base that cared quite a bit when they looked like they didn’t care much at all, standing out in the grunge period for their ironic detachment and a general lack of pretense that belied the sophistication of their songcraft.
While passion didn’t necessarily appear to be part of Pavement’s persona, Perry feels obliged to overcompensate, declaring them to be “the world’s most important and influential band...

When Alex Ross Perry set out to make a film about Pavement, he wanted it to be as absurd as some of the ’90s slacker band’s lyrics. For the indie director, known for “Listen Up Philip” and “Her Smell,” that meant pushing the very boundaries of what a film could be.
“Pavements,” premiering on Wednesday in the Horizons section of Venice Film Festival, is a documentary-musical-biopic hybrid that imagines a world where Pavement has achieved Rolling Stones-level success. The film follows the group on its 2022 reunion tour, tracks the progress of Perry’s “Slanted! Enchanted!” musical that also premiered that year, takes the audience inside a pop-up museum dedicated to the band and pitches a tongue-in-cheek biopic starring “Stranger Things” breakout Joe Keery as lead singer Stephen Malkmus and Nat Wolff as guitarist Scott Kannberg, aka Spiral Stairs. The past couple of years have been a very good time to be a Pavement fan. The Nineties indie rock band emerged from 12 years of hibernation in 2022 for a stellar, worldwide reunion tour that continues to this day. During their downtime, they assembled a fantastically bizarre jukebox musical based on songs from their catalog, and they promoted it with a trippy pop-up Pavement museum.
As plugged-in Pavement fans knew, all of this activity was captured by filmmaker Alex Ross Perry for a movie, Pavements. It’s premiering at the Venice Film Festival,...

"Directors who have massive success early on in their career and get a series of "blank checks" to make whatever crazy passion projects they want. Sometimes those checks clear and sometimes they bounce, baybee!"
Anyone who has listened to the popular film podcast Blank Check with Griffin and David, hosted by actor Griffin Newman and The Atlantic critic David Sims, will recognize those words that open every episode. In an age of IP-driven, heavily studio-controlled films, the days of blank-check filmmakers have had an even more difficult time getting those passion projects off the ground. It seemed like even when a director makes a big box office hit; they have trouble spinning that off into non-franchise work.

Imagine. The year is 1994 and you are a huge superhero fan. You sit down to watch your favorite cartoon show, a thrilling battle of good versus evil. In this week’s episode, Charles uses his mental might to clash with a blue enemy who promises to be his friend.
The cheesy voice-acting and choppy animation doesn’t disrupt the experience. In fact, it makes it better, intensifying the clash between Charles and the blue guy until you can’t take it anymore and you unleash your hero’s battle cry:
“Spoon!”
Because, of course, you’re not watching X-Men: The Animated Series, nor even Batman: The Animated Series, both respected superhero cartoons that get ample praise today. No, the Charles in question is Brainchild, a precocious evil pre-teen (voiced by Rob Paulsen) who enhanced his intelligence by giving himself a glass covered throbbing brain.

There is something genuinely heartfelt about I’m ‘George Lucas’: A Connor Ratliff Story. Directed by Ryan Jacobi, the documentary tells the story of New York-based comedian Connor Ratliff and his long tenure playing “George Lucas” on The George Lucas Talk Show, an improvised, monthly comedy series designed as a late-night panel talk show in which real-life guests act as though they are conversing with the real George Lucas. The majority of performances were staged at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. The show also gained a brand-new, expanded audience over Zoom during the pandemic.
We follow Ratliff through his routines preparing for each show, explaining his process along the way. Collaborators like Griffin Newman (who plays “Watto”) and Patrick Cotnoir (who produces the show) try explaining Ratliff to the viewer. Plot: The new epic chapter in the battle for Castle Grayskull!. The newly mechanized Skeletor, armed with Motherboard’s might, attacks Eternia’s heart while Prince Adam grapples with a new responsibility and what that means for him as He-Man!
Review: Back in 2021, I gave a glowing review to Kevin Smith’s revival of He-Man. Titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation, the Netflix original was released in two five-episode drops, both of which I loved. A blend of modern animation techniques coupled with a throwback to the Filmation style of the 1980s cartoon, Revelation was blasted online by a vocal minority who disliked Smith’s decision to “kill off” Prince Adam in the first episode and make the series centered on Teela and many of the female characters. This article contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revolution.
Episode 3 of Masters of the Universe: Revolution features former Man-At-Arms Duncan (Liam Cunningham) and wizard Orko (Griffin Newman) achieving an important goal, enhancing He-Man’s Sword of Power. To do this, Duncan goes to the one person he believes can do it, a locksmith who is, “small in stature and tall on talent.”
That locksmith is a short creature named Gwildor (Ted Biaselli.)
For those not well-versed in their Masters of the Universe franchise lore, Gwildor doesn’t come from the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Filmation cartoon. He actually debuted in the 1987 live-action movie, Masters of the Universe, played by Billy Barty. In that film he was also a locksmith whose main purpose in the plot was as the creator of the Cosmic Key, the object used to transport He-Man and company to Earth in that film.
