How Late Producer Jill Messick First Saw The Mega Potential Of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Through The Eyes Of Her Son
Image
Here’s a wonderful Mother’s Day story as Warner Bros./Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie flies past $900M: The entire movie started with a mother’s love for her son, noticing his passion for the create-your-own-world game.

Around 2011, former Miramax and Lorne Michaels Entertainment executive Jill Messick was in between producing gigs, and like many parents with millennial young children, recognized her 11-year old son Jackson’s obsession with the pixelated brick-building universe.

Jill Messick

Seeing Jackson’s affinity for the game, Messick was promptly moved to cold-call Stockholm, Sweden-based Mojang Studios to inquire about the movie rights. She then cobbled together frequent flyer miles to fly over and pitch the game’s architect and company founder Markus Persson.

At the time, Mojang — being an indie startup that mushroomed into the creator of one...

Image
Some could say it’s too early in the day for a drink, but it’s the right time somewhere. Production for Day Drinker is underway, with Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz reteaming for the fourth time.

In the picture, a bearded Johnny Depp leans against a bartop while holding a chilled beverage. Depp’s character has piercing blue eyes, an undershirt to match, and a navy-colored vest that gives him a distinguished look. Depp’s beard and long hair appear gray with age, though he wears it exceptionally well.

According to Lionsgate’s official description, Day Drinker tells the story of a...

Neon just picked up this new body horror film starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco
Image
It's always exciting when a new horror film gets picked up, particularly by distributors like A24 or Neon. These companies have a keen eye for great horror content, and more often than not, the films they acquire are usually both unique and boundary-pushing. One of these indie powerhouses just snagged the worldwide rights to a new body horror, and based on what we know so far about this movie, it's something you're going to want to see.

We're talking about Neon, the studio that delivered what is arguably the best horror film of 2024, Longlegs. If you haven't seen Longlegs, maybe you're familiar with other Neon horror movies such as Immaculate, Cuckoo, Possessor and Infinity Pool. Now, the company has another horror flick to add to its lineup, and we're hoping it hits theaters this year.

The film is titled Together, and it stars real-life husband and wife Alison Brie and Dave Franco.

Mexico’s Los Cabos Festival Calls Off 2023 Edition
Image
Mexico’s Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival, one of the country’s very top pre-pandemic movie events, has cancelled its 2023 12th edition, citing “the lack of the economic support which was vital in prior editions to carry out this important film event.”

In a written statement, the festival organisers thanked “those people, companies and institutions who had confirmed their support and participation in the 2023. We are committed to strengthen our collaboration in the future.”

Based out of Cabo San Lucas, and launched in 2012 as an three-way North American industry bridge between U.S., Canada and Mexico, Los Cabos proved one of the fastest-growing festivals in Latin America, playing off the huge hike in Mexican production levels, Mexico’s first big U.S./Mexico box office hits such as “Instructions Not Included,” which grossed $90.6 million between the two markets; and the enthusiastic support of Canada’s Telefilm and influential industry players...

Wrap Roundtable: Franklin Leonard Says Making Indie Films Isn’t an ‘Altruistic Impulse’ – ‘It’s Exactly the Opposite’ (Video)
Franklin Leonard
Amid an industry overwhelmed by an ongoing writers’ strike and a push to streaming, the notion of genuine independent cinema is as fragile as ever.

With the streamers cutting costs and focusing on content that large swathes of viewers might actually watch, the content for content’s sake spending booms that allowed indie cinema to temporarily flourish seems to have come to an end. Is all hope lost?

In a recent panel hosted exclusively by TheWrap, titled “The State of Independent Filmmaking,” Franklin Leonard argued that while investing in independent film if widely considered a financial risk or act of altruism, his work as founder of The Black List has proven that the opposite is true. The best screenplay is the best business plan.

“I think there is an assumption that when you work in the indie space, or you’re seeking out writers from outside the traditional system, that...

Cannes 2022 ‘Triangle of Sadness’ Directed by Ruben Östlund
Image
‘Triangle of Sadness’ Directed by Ruben Östlund;Ruben Östlund, Cannes Competition, Palme d’Or WinnerWhat a production! I have not seen ‘Triangle of Sadness’ yet. I want to, though it was not on the top of my list during Cannes this year. Looking at the credits, I am wondering what it took to get this produced.

IMDb synopsis of this film: A cruise for the super-rich sinks thus leaving survivors, including a fashion model celebrity couple, trapped on an island.

I could ask a few of my friends about their involvement in its production, e.g., Jim Stark, Micah Green, Philippe Bober, Lizzie Francke, Mike Goodridge…I wonder what they would tell me. Or I could guess…which is what I am doing here as a subject of this blog.

Philippe Bober: Coproduction Office is the international sales agent for the film. But the company is also, as the name suggests, a coproducer and Philippe usually takes a strong part in the development of the project as well as representing it for licensing to territories. In this case (I have to repeat that have not seen the film, but based upon what I have only heard said), I would guess that he did not do much with the development because when he does, the project is in no way formulaic; I have heard this film has traces of Ostland’s previous film, The Square, which then makes it more prosaic. Bober’s hand in film always makes the film unique.

And Philippe usually works with younger budding talent or else hardcore art house filmmakers. However, as international sales agent, perhaps some presales by him to territories helped finance the film. I am unsure that was necessary because the director Ruben Ostlund is so well known and accoladed already that I would think the money might come from other more well established sources. You can see the companies involved and get an idea of funding.

That’s where I would guess Micah Greene would enter the picture. At 30Westhe is not only producing and is best friends with the US distributor, Neon, one of the top U.S. films distributors today, but he comes from the most prestigious CAA where he was in charge of international financing for their films. He was and is still on top and deserves every good thing that comes his way. A mensch. Lizzie Francke is a true producer, has done horror and comes from the roots of arthouse films from U.K. She is now Editor-at-Large at the BFI Film Fund now. There certainly is a need for such a UK partner. Is there a need for more? Mike Goodridge, founder of the brand new production company Good Chaos, is also there. Aside from producing, Mike has worn many hats, beginning as a journalist and heading up the L.A. office at Screen International, heading up Protagonist a top U.K. international sales agency as well as a production company, heading up Beijing (?) Film Festival, all around professional and all around good guy.

Olivier Père, former head along with (now Tribeca’s Frederic Boyer) looks like he is involved in every current production these days… Check out his credits in IMDb:

And last but not least, Jim Stark, another with an eye, like Philippe Bober, for cutting edge talent and stories, has made 17 films as exec producer, producer, associate producer or co-producer just since 2018. That is almost four films a year! For those who might remember, he also discovered and produced for Jim Jarmusch on his first five films starting with Down by Law in 1986, done just after we all witnessed ourselves transported by Stranger Than Paradise at the New York Film Festival, the year Jim and I met and I began buying his films for Lorimar and Republic.

Five is not a bad number of women represented on a list of 31 producers, coproducers, associate produces, executive producers and line producers…that’s almost 20 . But the list still sounds to me like an old boys’ list and I wonder if they all got back a good share of the budget. We all know movies never make money, but the above and below the line members do. What was the budget? Was this everyone’s reward for all the times they do not get paid because they are making art built into the budget?

Or am I just being cynical? Hollywood stunts don’t surprise me but what does surprise me is that it also won the top prize in Cannes. These producers are all-round good guys who are also good business men, and networking is crucial to this business. It’s nice to see them all together; this roster is very impressive.

Writing for young talent, I would say: This is a list of acquaintances you should aspire to have, study their credits, speak to them about their projects when you meet them. ‘The Trashers’: Olivia DeJonge To Star Opposite David Harbour & Cooper Hoffman In Cooper Raiff’s Latest
Image
Exclusive: Olivia DeJonge (Elvis) has been set as the female lead for The Trashers—the latest feature from Sundance prize-winning director Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), which will have her starring alongside David Harbour and Cooper Hoffman.

The film will center on Hoffman’s character Aj—the teenage son of Connecticut trash magnate and Genovese crime family associate Jimmy Galante (Harbour). In 2004, Galante bought the city’s minor-league hockey team and assigned A.J. to run it. The two had bonded over their love for the game when A.J. played, with his crooked father hoping to hold onto their bond. The kid did well, watching the team gain notoriety for its rough and violent style of play but also developing a wide fan base as it started to win more and more games. The team’s success and fame all came to an abrupt end with Galante’s arrest on 72 criminal charges.

Cooper Hoffman Signs on to Cooper Raiff’s Hockey Mobster Pic ‘The Trashers’
Cooper Hoffman
Cooper Hoffman has found his next role in Cooper Raiff’s “The Trashers,” playing son to David Harbour’s father.

Under A.J.’s command, the team quickly gains notoriety for its violent but effective playing style, racking up one win after another. However, it all comes crashing down when Galante is arrested on 72 criminal charges.

“The Trashers” will mark Raiff’s first time solely behind the camera, as he wrote, directed and starred in his first two projects. Adam R. Perlman will make his feature film writing debut,...

STX Places Chris Pine & Ben Foster Movie ‘The Contractor’ In Bankruptcy
Image
As STX looks to untangle itself from previous company Eros, and segue to its new finance partner Najafi Companies, the Robert Simonds studios has put its latest Chris Pine & Ben Foster thriller, The Contractor, in chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Showtime and Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment, as Deadline first told you, acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Tarik Saleh-directed action movie, which will be released later this year. Similar to Queenpins which STX sold to Paramount+ and Showtime for $20M, the deal on The Contractor will see the pic released in a limited number of theaters by Paramount with a simultaneous PVOD release across platforms.

So what’s going on here?

A company spokesperson tells Deadline, “This filing, like our previous filing on Greenland 2 is surgical and strategic as we protect our rights while we work towards our closing for strategic alternatives for our company.” “Migration is the entity that now...

‘The Contractor’ Trailer: Chris Pine Is a Veteran Turned Contract Killer in Paramount Thriller
Image
Action movie “The Contractor” will become the first title under the new ViacomCBS and Paramount+ integration of Showtime content across the streaming platform.

Tarik Saleh directs “The Contractor,” which reunites “Hell or High Water” stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as two former Special Forces operatives who turn to contract work after being involuntarily discharged from the Army.

James Harper (Pine) is desperate to provide for his family, and turns to a private underground military force, led by a mysterious coordinator (Kiefer Sutherland). When the very first assignment goes awry, the elite soldier finds himself caught in a dangerous conspiracy and on the run for his life.

“We gave them our minds, our bodies, and our spirits,” Pine as James says in the trailer. “They chewed us up and spit us out.”

Gillian Jacobs, Eddie Marsan, Fares Fares, Nina Hoss, and Amira Casar also star in the J.P. Davis–penned movie.

STX Sells Chris Pine-Ben Foster Thriller ‘The Contractor’ to Paramount and Showtime
Tarik Saleh
Showtime and Paramount Home Entertainment have acquired the U.S. rights to director Tarik Saleh’s thriller “The Contractor” — and released the first trailer for a film that reteams Chris Pine and Ben Foster from Taylor Sheridan’s “Hell or High Water.”

As with the recent acquisition of “Queenpins,” which was also sold by the financially troubled indie studio STXfilms, “The Contractor” will get a limited theatrical release from Paramount on April 1 along with a simultaneous release on premium video-on-demand platforms. The film will also stream on Showtime and Paramount+ later this year.

Pine stars as as Special Forces Sergeant James Harper, who is involuntarily discharged from the Army and cut off from his pension. In debt, out of options and desperate to provide for his family, Harper contracts with a private underground military force. CAA Experiential Entertainment Affiliate Constellation Immersive Gets “Significant” Investment From 30West
Image
Exclusive: A year after its founding, CAA experiential entertainment affiliate Constellation Immersive has gotten a “significant” equity investment from 30West, a prominent finance and advisory firm.

30West, a backer of companies including Neon as well as streaming series and feature films, joins founding shareholders Crossroads Live, a theatrical entertainment outfit, and Baroda Ventures, a Los Angeles-based venture capital firm.

Former CAA Film Finance and Sales Group co-head Micah Green joined Texas-based Dan Friedkin atop 30West in 2018.

Constellation Immersive was founded by CAA’s Marty Lasalle and Thao Nguyen in 2020. It was conceived of as a way to offer clients and partners options during the coronavirus pandemic, when in-person options were non-existent. In the year since, with Covid-19 restrictions easing in many parts of the world and vaccines enabling freer movement, the outfit has seen “a lot of pent-up demand,” Nguyen told Deadline in an interview. With distribution models, protocols and...

Chris Pine and Ben Foster to Reunite for Thriller Violence of Action
Image
Wonder Woman 1984 star Chris Pine is reuniting with his Hell or High Water co-star Ben Foster for Violence of Action, a new thriller from STXfilms. The one-two dramatic punch of Pine and Foster should hopefully prove to once again be as gruffly charismatic as in their 2016 collaboration in this story of black ops and betrayal.

Violence of Action is being helmed by Swedish director Tarik Saleh whose previous credits include the likes of the 2017 crime drama The Nile Hilton Incident as well as episodes of popular series Westworld and Ray Donovan. Violence of Action stars Pine as "James Harper who, after being involuntarily discharged from the Green Berets, joins a paramilitary organization in order to support his family in the only way he knows how. Harper travels to Berlin with his elite team on a black ops mission to investigate a mysterious threat. Barely into his first assignment, he finds...
