James Akins was born on 15 October 1926 in Akron, Ohio, USA. He was married to Marjorie Abbott Akins. He died on 15 July 2010 in Mitchellville, Maryland, USA.
He was appointed Director of Fuels and Energy at the State Department to United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in the Fall of 1973 until August 1975.
