Film Review: Creepy Crawly (2023) by Chalit Krileadmongkon and Pakphum Wongjinda
Image
The use of folklore and native legends as a source for content in the horror genre stretches back decades, whether it be for minuscule scenes within the larger narrative or wholesale films based on such stories. Ranging from the likes of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and other cryptids to simpler stuff like “When a Stranger Calls” or “Urban Legends,” it’s all fairly commonly used as a building block that serves up some intriguing content. Directors Chalit Krileadmongkon and Pakphun Wongjinda, hot on the heels of their successful creature feature “Leio: The Terrible Giant” (or the rebranded US title “The Beast Beneath”), team up again with inspiration from a Thai legend of a human-possessing centipede to deliver another stellar creature feature in “Creepy Crawly” on Digital and Blu-Ray from WellGo USA on October 3.

‘Countdown’ – 2012 Thai Thriller Is a Darkly Fun Way to Ring in the New Year
Image
While New Year’s is just the first day of January for most people, others consider it to be something more momentous. It represents a fresh start, especially for those who desperately need a change in their lives. The three core characters in Nattawut Poonpiriya’s 2012 movie Countdown don’t know it yet, but their New Year’s Eve is going to be a time of reflection and, most importantly, survival.

The college-age characters in Countdown have a problem that only people their age would consider a real crisis; their weed dealer has retired as part of his own clean slate. But if they want to have a fun New Year’s Eve, then roommates Bee, Jack and Pam need to find another source, stat. This brings them to calling Jesús (David Asavanond) from the torn-up business card that Jack found in his ex-dealer’s place. They have to guess...

Movie of the Week #12: Adriana Rosati picks Countdown (2012) by Nattawut Poonpiriya
Nattawut “Baz” Poonpiriya’s debut feature “Countdown” is three-way fun. It can be enjoyed as a juicy one-off; it can be a good starting point for a binge on the director’s oeuvre; finally, it’s a fun watch if you have already seen his more popular following movies “Bad Genius” and “One for The Road”, as you will be able to spot the seeds of his creative process and have fun joining the dots.

Jack (Pachara Chirathivat), Bee (Jariporn Junkiet), and Pam (Peak Patarasaya) are three Thai friends sharing a flat in NYC, where they are supposed to study but instead spend all their parents’ money in anything recreational. For 2012 New Year’s Eve their plan is to score some drugs and just get high at home watching the countdown on the telly; punctual as an angel of death, a new dealer called Jesus (a terrific David Asavanond) is...

Kevin Bacon, Finn Carter, and Fred Ward in Tremors (1990)
Michael Gross & Jon Heder in 'Tremors: Shrieker Island' Official Trailer
Kevin Bacon, Finn Carter, and Fred Ward in Tremors (1990)
"You don't know what you're up against..." Universal Pictures has released an official trailer for yet another direct-to-dvd sequel in the Tremors franchise (there's a Tremors franchise?) called Tremors: Shrieker Island. Believe it or not, this is the 7th (!!) film in the Tremors franchise, following Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell in 2018. The only reason we're posting this: because this one stars Napoleon Dynamite himself, Jared Hess, along with the original Tremors hunter himself, Michael Gross, who also appears in all six of the other Tremors movies. When a private island is infiltrated by Graboids, Ass Blasters, and Shriekers, two of the tropical island's nature preserve's top scientists recruit Burt Gummer, monster hunter extraordinaire, to eradicate the infestation. While there, Burt picks up a potential new protégé and encounters lost love. The cast includes Caroline Langrishe, Cassie Clare, Matthew Douglas, Sahajak Boonthanakit, David Asavanond, Jackie Cruz, and Richard Brake. Doesn't look that bad,...

Tremors: Shrieker Island Trailer Brings Burt Gummer Back for More Graboid Action
Image
We have the first trailer for Tremors: Shrieker Island. Originally going under the title "Island Fury," this is the seventh installment in the long-running franchise. This time, Michael Gross is once again back as the gun-loving Burt Gummer for another round with the deadly Graboids. As we can see from the trailer, Burt will have his hands full, not only with the return of the Shriekers, but with some people who don't fully grasp the threat they face. The studio has also revealed the release date and, as promised, the movie will be here just in time for Halloween this October.

The trailer opens up with a group of hunters on an isolated island. Graboids are on the loose and Burt is schooling some newcomers on just how dangerous these creatures are and the threat they pose to those on the island. It then turns into a full-on bout of monster-filled chaos,...

Kevin Bacon, Finn Carter, and Fred Ward in Tremors (1990)
Explosive Tremors 7 Set Video Goes Behind-the-Scenes with the Cast
Kevin Bacon, Finn Carter, and Fred Ward in Tremors (1990)
The seventh film in the cult classic Tremors series Tremors: Island Fury began filming in Thailand last week. And to celebrate the beginning of principal photography, the official Tremors Instagram page shared a fun video intro with Gross looking like a homeless Santa Clause. And before you say anything, I know what you're thinking. Is that Napoleon Dynamite and Flaca from Orange Is the New Black hanging out with the South Bend Shovel Slayer on vacation? And to that question, I have to say, yes, crazy as it sounds, yes that is Jon Heder and Jackie Cruz hugging all up on the new My Name is Earl version of Burt Gummer.

And speaking of Cruz, the My Own Worst Enemy and Kourtney & Khlo&#233 Take Miami actress also took to Instagram to share a pic of herself getting all kinds of chummy-chummy with Tremors: Island Fury and What Happened to Monday,...

Film Review: Samui Song (2017) by Pen-ek Ratanaruang
Pen-ek Ratanaruang is a name already recognized and respected inside Asian cinema culture. His filmography has gone from less to more, and lately, his level has remained at a very appreciable level. Samui Song is the new film that he directs after “Headshot” from 2011, and “Samui Song” maintains the good stylized quality that film had. It has been 6 years of patient waiting for us to see a new movie of his, but to be honest, it was worth it.

“Samui Song” screened at San Diego Asian Film Festival

Pen-ek Ratanaruang is sometimes known for mixing different genres, like in “6ixtynin9” or in Last “Life in the Universe”, where he mixes drama with comedy. Here, Pen-ek Ratanaruang is more focused and tells the story in a stylized noirish way with some thriller elements, as it occurred with his previous film “Headshot”.

Samui Song is about Viyada (or Vi), a well-known soap...

Well this looks intriguing. A first teaser trailer is out for Thai movie The Last Executioner. Based on a true story and inspired by real events in the life of Chavoret Jaruboon, Thailand's last machine gun prison executioner it’s directed by Tom Waller, starring Vithaya Pansringarm, Penpak Sirikul and David Asavanond.. Synopsis: Inspired by true events, The Last Executioner is the story of Chavoret Jaruboon, the last person in Thailand whose job it was to execute by gun - a wild rock and roller, who took a "respectable" job to support the family he loved devotedly, then constantly tried to reconcile the good and bad karma that came from his decision. It is a story of life at its most beautiful and death at its most surreal. Powerful, stuff thought provoking stuff, but then that’s what makes good movies!
