The Perfect Peaky Blinders Replacement Debuts on Hulu With a Fantastic Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Peaky Blinders is one of the most beloved period crime drama shows of all time. Even several years after its finale, the interest in the show is as high as ever, with Netflix planning a sequel film.

However, BBC One created the perfect replacement for Peaky Blinders with Dope Girls. The series comes with a big difference from Steven Knight's drama, as it features a women-led cast. The historical period drama series debuted earlier this year on BBC One, and, following its debut on Hulu on Jul. 29, Dope Girls features an exciting Rotten Tomatoes score: 88%.

Until its U.S. release, Dope Girls featured a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score out of seven reviews. Following its debut on Hulu, the score dropped slightly to a still-fantastic 88% after a negative review. So far, there are not enough opinions from the audience for a score on the Popcornmeter.

Say hello to your newest obsession; it’s certainly mine.

Image
Exclusive: Julianne Nicholson (Mare of Easttown) and Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects) have landed the lead roles in the BBC’s upcoming crime drama series Dope Girls, we can reveal.

Umi Myers, Eilidh Fisher and Geraldine James have also landed major parts in the series, which we first told you about back in March. At the time, our sources said the BBC sees Dope Girls as a spiritual successor to Peaky Blinders, which ended last year.

Filming on the show, which is set in London’s Soho in the early 20th century, when female gangs ran the clubs, drugs and moonshine, is now underway. It will launch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and comes from Polly Stenham and Alex Warren (Eleanor).

Nicholson will play Kate Galloway, a single mother who establishes a nightclub amidst the hedonistic uproar of post-World War One London, embracing a life...

News Louisa Mellor Jan 22, 2013

Spoilers ahoy as synopses and casting details are released for Black Mirror's second series...

Last night saw the BFI premiere of the first episode in Black Mirror’s second series, which means that a Channel Four broadcast date won’t be too far behind.

We’ll bring you a spoiler-free review of the series opener soon, but in the meantime, the following plot and casting details have been revealed for the three fifty-minute episodes.

(We're posting the details as sparingly as possible for those interested, and as ever, have kept the major spoilers out, but with a series as smart and surprising as Black Mirror, why not step away from the screen now and go in completely cold? Given the choice, it’s what we’d do.)

Episode one: Be Right Back

Cast: Domhnall Gleeson, Hayley Atwell and Sinead Matthews

Premise: What if we could...

1234: Film review
Likable Britpoppy tale from a debut director

There's an awful lot of likability and charm in this debut feature from British film-maker Giles Borg: a downbeat, neo-Britpoppy tale from north London about a nerdy guitarist called Stevie (Ian Bonar) yearning for a record deal, but also deeply and hopelessly in love with the bassist Emily (Lyndsey Marshal), who doesn't really want to be in the band at all. It's a bit uncertain here and there, but the scene where Stevie and Emily have a fleeting, uncomfortable kiss is heartbreakingly tremendous.   The feature, shot by Ken Eley, looks great too.

Rating: 3/5

London Film Festival Review: 1234
1234 is perhaps the nicest film I’ve seen for years, a gentle, modest, airy Brit flick centering on a budding musician. Stevie (Ian Bonar) is a bespectacled young guy who spends his days in the durge of a London call centre and his spare time dreaming of success on the indie music scene. Alongside his drummer friend Neil (Mathew Baynton), the duo recruit the more experienced, but slightly gruff guitarist Billy (Kieron Bew) and his arty bassist friend Emily (Lyndsey Marshal) to complete the line-up of their new band, 1234. As they punt out demos to record labels and work their way round the grubby gig circuit, personal and musical challenges arise, and shifts in the band dynamic threaten the whole enterprise.
