This 15-Year-Old Ryan Reynolds Comedy Is Perfect For Superbad Fans

Quick Links What is Adventureland About? Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart Have Awkward But Amazing Chemistry Adventureland's Strange Critical Reception

As the years go by and societal standards change, some movie genres simply fall by the wayside. From the downfall of the erotic thriller to the stark drop-off in found footage releases, sometimes the decline can not be avoided. Comedy, as a wider genre, is notorious for not aging well. While dedicated cinephiles are inclined to go back and appreciate the Marx Brothers, Harold Lloyd, or Charlie Chaplin films, the average moviegoer isn't. This is even applicable to more "recent" releases like 16 Candles or Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, both of which haven't aged as well as fans had hoped. Due to this trend of comedy not being evergreen, it feels foolish to say that any one niche comedy subgenre will survive the test of time, but if anything can do it,...

Kieran Culkin Groped and Tortured Jesse Eisenberg in Audition
Image
Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin are currently earning raves for their new film, A Real Pain, with the former also serving as the film's director. The pair showcase an easygoing chemistry in the film, playing mismatched cousins, and it looks like some of that chemistry started back in 2009 when Culkin auditioned for the great 2009 romantic comedy Adventureland. The actor didn't land a part in the film, but he left a lasting impression on Eisenberg when he got a bit touchy during the audition.

During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Eisenberg shared the odd experience of meeting Culkin for the first time back when Kieran auditioned for a role in Adventureland. Eisenberg had already been cast in the movie as James Brennan, and Culkin was auditioning for a role that required the actor to punch Eisenberg in the testicles every five minutes. As the audition went on, let's...

Watch Video: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jean Smart & Bob Balaban Among 18 SAG-AFTRA Members Urging “Yes Vote” On Strike Authorization
Image
A group of SAG-AFTRA members, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jean Smart and Bob Balaban, has released a video urging their fellow performers to approve the strike authorization that’s currently out for a vote of the guild’s eligible members.

The vote comes in advance of the guild’s upcoming negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which are set to start on June 7. A strike, if it comes to that, could not start before June 30, when the guild’s current contract expires.

The Directors Guild, meanwhile, is currently in negotiations with the AMPTP. Their contract also expires on June 30, and the Writers Guild has been on strike for 29 days.

“I’m asking you to join me in voting ‘yes’ on the strike authorization,” Louis-Dreyfus says on the video.

A “yes” vote, Smart says, “Just means that we give the national board the power to strike if the...

First Trailer for Comedy 'Paddleton' with Mark Duplass & Ray Romano
"I'm the dying guy!" "I'm the other guy!" Netflix has released the first full trailer for an indie comedy titled Paddleton, the latest feature from the director of Blue Jay. The film is premiering at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in a few weeks, then arrives on Netflix in February. Paddleton is about the unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors when one of them is diagnosed with terminal cancer. They go on an emotional journey together, chasing emus and getting into all kinds of wacky trouble, of course. The film stars Ray Romano and Mark Duplass, who co-wrote the screenplay with the director. The small cast also includes Marguerite Moreau, Christine Woods, Alexandra Billings, and Matt Bush. This looks pretty good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Alex Lehmann's Paddleton, direct from YouTube: An unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors becomes an unexpectedly emotional journey when the younger...

Short New Trailer for Dating Comedy 'Sharon 1.2.3.' Starring Matt Bush
"Three girls named Sharon...?" Epic Pictures Group has released the official trailer for Sharon 1.2.3., a dating comedy from filmmaker/screenwriter Mark Brown (who wrote the original script for Barbershop and its sequels). The film is about a nerd who has become very wealthy running a tech company (what an original idea for a character). He's now dating two beautiful, older, women, both named Sharon, and things get even crazier when he meets a third woman named Sharon. Why does this seem like the most cliche nerd fantasy ever? Matt Bush stars as Jonah, and the full cast includes Nadine Velazquez & Erinn Hayes & Skyler Samuels as the three Sharons, along with Gina Rodriguez, Aarti Mann, Vik Sahay, and Will Harris. This is such a short trailer that sells it as simply and directly as possible, maybe that's all they need. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Mark Brown's Sharon 1.2.3., direct...

The Relationtrip (2017)
‘The Relationtrip’ Review: In This Modestly Clever Comedy, The Rom-Com Gets Weird — SXSW 2017
The Relationtrip (2017)
You’ve seen this all before, and that’s the cheery joke driving C.A. Gabriel and Renee Felice Smith’s amusing feature directorial debut, “The Relationtrip.” Clearly a passion project for the real-life couple, the pair wrote, directed, and produced the film, with Smith also stepping in front of the camera for one of the film’s lead roles. (Gabriel also composed music for the feature.) A wicked spin on the often played-out world of indie romantic comedies, “The Relationtrip” packs every conceivable genre trope into a neat 90 minutes, and then happily upends them.

Beck (Smith) and Liam (Matt Bush) are typical La hipsters — he does something with video games, she works in a cafe, they meet at a “salon de music” held in someone’s living room. After their awkward meet-cute, Liam and Beck take to a taco truck to get to know each other better, and while alternately...

After bonding over their mutual disinterest in relationships, they decide to go away together on a ‘friend’ trip. And that’s when things get weird. Really, really weird.”

Previously titled Sharon is Caring, the film was greenlit by Forest Whitaker's JuntoBox Films at the American Film Market last year.  Based on a story by New York based filmmaker Wesley Mills, Sharon 1.2.3 stars Matt Bush (Adventureland) as a young tech geek who gets sexually involved with two different women, both named Sharon. Forest Whitaker at an event for Les 2 font la « père » (2009)
Second feature from Forest Whitaker’s digital studio JuntoBox Films was greenlit last year at Afm.

Romantic comedy Sharon 1.2.3., written and directed by Mark Brown, has commenced principal photography in Los Angeles.

The second feature from Forest Whitaker’s digital studio JuntoBox Films stars Matt Bush as Jonah, a 22-year old technology geek who’s having casual sex with two women coincidentally named Sharon who then meets a third Sharon who he falls in love with. The three Sharons will be played by Skylar Samuels, Nadine Velasquez and Erinn Hayes.

Based on a story by Wesley Mills, Sharon 1.2.3. was greenlit at last year’s Afm and is a result of JuntoBox Film’s crowdsourcing model. This allows filmmakers to upload projects directly to the JuntoBox site and then rate and vote on projects to be selected.

The film is produced by Nina Yang Bongiovi and Kelly Thomas.

DVD Release: The Kitchen
DVD Release Date: April 9, 2013

Price: DVD $26.95

Studio: Monterey

Laura Prepon (r.) and Dreama Walker talk it over in The Kitchen.

Likable ladies Laura Prepon (Lay the Favorite) and Dreama Walker (Compliance) star in the 2012 independent comedy The Kitchen.

Okay, here’s what we’re looking at: Jennifer (Prepon) just left her job; her boyfriend Paul (Bryan Greenberg, Friends With Benefits) has been cheating; and her cynical sister Penny (Walker) has an inappropriate announcement. And then there’s Stan (Matt Bush, Margaret), who’s in love with Jennifer, and Kenny (Tate Ellington), who’s in love with Penny. Throw in a party to celebrate Jennifer’s 30th birthday, a couple of dueling bands in the back yard and a manic depressive party photographer who may have forgotten to take his meds, and you’ve got a fairly madcap scenario in the making.

Directed Ishai Setton, written by Jim Beggarly, and featuring...

‘The Kitchen’ Exclusive Trailer: Laura Prepon Is Having One Hell of a Bad Birthday
Featuring a very talented cast of comedic talents (including Compliance‘s Dreama Walker in a refreshingly breezy role), Ishai Setton‘s The Kitchen takes the party-where-everything-goes-wrong to a new level. It’s Jennifer’s (Laura Prepon) thirtieth birthday, and the last thing she wants to celebrate is her life, considering she’s saddled with a scheming ex-boyfriend (Bryan Greenberg), a sister who can’t manage to filter any of her thoughts and opinions (Walker), and a best friend who might be throwing her said party out of more than just the goodness of his heart (Matt Bush). Set entirely inside Jennifer’s kitchen, The Kitchen looks to be a clever, tightly-wound, and amusing comedy of manners (or, non-manners in some cases). In fact, our own dear leader Neil Miller loved the film when he saw it back in October at the Austin Film Festival, writing that the “entire film works on the economics of scale, in...

Austin Film Fest: Comedy Stands Out With ‘The Kitchen,’ ‘It’s a Disaster’ and ‘Ex-Girlfriends’
The first five days of the 2012 Austin Film Festival have been a challenging frame. For a festival with such a rich history and strong commitment to promoting the work of great storytellers, the overall line-up has been anything but noteworthy. The fest’s biggest (and arguably best) film, Silver Linings Playbook, is an obvious stand-out. But I’ll have more on that later. For now, we’re going to take a look at three comedies that have emerged as clear reasons why there’s hope for the Austin Film Festival programming staff. While much of the rest of their line-up underwhelms, they’ve provided their audience with a number of gems, all of which are sure to make us laugh. The Kitchen That 70s Show starlet Laura Prepon takes the lead in what could be director Ishai Setton’s breakout work. She plays Jennifer, a burgeoning art gallery curator whose thirtieth birthday begins with a messy breakup...

Kitchen, The | Review - Austin Film Festival 2012
It is Jennifer's (Laura Prepon) 30th birthday and her housemate Stan (Matt Bush) has a fabulous party planned for her. Unfortunately, Jennifer has just recently discovered that her boyfriend Paul (Bryan Greenberg) is a total playa who has been screwing around with at least one of her friends. More than likely, the other woman (or women) will be at the party -- and as Jennifer's bad luck will have it, so will Paul. For all intents and purposes, this party will probably become one of the worst nights of Jennifer's life...

High School | Review
Apparently, I’m the “stoner comedy” guy at JustPressPlay. That’s fine. I can live with that. After reviewing Mac & Devin, I declared a personal vendetta against stoner flicks, however; John Stalberg's High School has changed my opinion. For the better.

The day after valedictorian Henry (Matt Bush) takes his first hit of “da chronic,” his high school principal (Michael Chiklis, equal parts creepy and menacing here) decides to institute mandatory drug testing for the entire student body after the school’s spelling bee champ flubs a word due to being stoned out of her brain. Henry turns to his newfound stoner buddy (aptly named Breaux, played by Sean Marquette) for help.

Adrien Brody Rolls Into "High School"
From Anchor Bay Films, Sneak Peek a restricted Red Band trailer supporting director John Stalberg Jr.'s 2010 'stoner' comedy "High School", now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

The film stars Colin Hanks, Adhir Kalyan, Yeardley Smith, Alicia Sixtos, Michael Vartan, Matt Bush, Sean Marquette, Michael Chiklis, Curtis Armstrong, Luis Chavez and Adrien Brody :

"...the day after soon-to-be valedictorian 'Henry Burke' (Bush) takes a hit of the 'chronic' for the first time, his school principal (Chiklis) institutes a zero tolerance drug policy and administers a mandatory drug test for all students. Henry has two options: fail and lose his college scholarship, or team up with his stoner friend 'Breaux' (Marquette) to beat the system.

"They steal a high powered 'ganja' from law student-turned-drug-dealer 'Psycho Ed' (Brody) and spike the school’s bake sale brownies, getting the whole school—faculty included—completely stoned out of their minds. But with the student...

John Gulager
Exclusive: John Gulager Talks Piranha 3Dd Blu-ray
John Gulager
John Gulager Talks Piranha 3Dd, on Blu-ray today!

Director John Gulager came to the public's attention with the third and final installment of HBO's filmmaking series Project Greenlight 3, which spawned the horror franchise Feast. After churning out this wackadoo monster trilogy, Gulager wasted no time in setting up his next project, the sequel Piranha 3Dd, which moves the action to a water park.

Arriving on Blu-ray this week, it might be easy to write off the film as a quick cash grab that dines on the gory bones of its predecessor, which was directed by fellow horror auteur Alexandre Aja. But no, John Gulager actually has a strong voice that is all his own, and this new flesh-eating fish tale is comparable to when Piranha Part Two: The Spawning's James Cameron took over for original director Joe Dante. Yes, we truly believe, a few years down the line,...

Blu-ray Review: Abysmally Unfunny ‘Piranha 3Dd’ Doubles the Awfulness
Chicago – “Piranha 3Dd” is such a pathetic excuse for entertainment that it doesn’t even deserve to be regarded as a film. It’s just soft-core porn stuffed with shoddy special effects. The titillation factor is zilch and the scare factor is even lower than that. Even frat boys under the influence of multiple drugs may have difficulty finding this dreck watchable, let alone funny.

Director John Gulager is the Project Greenlight winner whose 2005 schlock-fest, “Feast,” still remains his crowning achievement. He appears to have no knowledge of why camp has the potential to be amusing. Truly funny camp must be constructed with a degree of sincerity. “The Room” is a timeless comedy classic because its eccentric creator, Tommy Wiseau, mistakenly thought he was making a searing relationship drama. You simply can’t make a movie like that on purpose. Everyone who does fails spectacularly.

Blu-ray Rating: 0.5/5.0

At least 2010’s...

High School: Proof that the Stoner Comedy Isn't Dead [Review]
Stalberg's comedy, which he co-wrote with Erik Linthorst and Stephen Susco, stars Matt Bush as Henry, a smart kid on the way to being named valedictorian and taking off to MIT on an academic scholarship. On a seemingly normal day, he crashes into the principal's car while trying to avoid a head-on collision with Travis (Sean Marquette), the school stoner. The pair, once friends and now thrown together by circumstance, find themselves rekindling a tiny portion of their relationship and they share a joint, a simple mistake that takes on epic proportions when the principal Dr. Leslie, brilliantly played by an unrecognizable Michael Chiklis, announces mandatory drug testing of the entire student body with those failing being expelled. Next Factor Q&A: 'High School' and 'Piranha 3Dd' Star Matt Bush
Matt Bush has been a hot commodity since he was featured in the 2009 Jesse Eisenberg comedy "Adventureland." Soon afterward, he landed a starring role on the TBS comedy "Glory Daze" as a freshman rushing a fraternity.

Now 26, Bush has the pot-centric comedy "High School" and "Piranha 3Dd" both hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week. In "High School," he plays valedictorian Henry Burke, who conspires with a friend to get his entire school high to sabotage a drug test so he doesn't lose his scholarship. In "Piranha 3Dd," he may or may not be fish food.

We chatted with Bush, who will next be seen in "Trouble With the Curve" (opening Sept. 21), about his various roles, which superhero he'd love to play and what exactly he was smokin' on set.

"High School" was finished a few years ago. What are you most excited for people to see now that it's finally coming out?...

Matt Bush
Exclusive: Matt Bush Talks High School
Matt Bush
Matt Bush talks about playing an unconventional valedictorian in High School, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD September 4

Matt Bush is an actor who has always chosen diverse roles to appear in. Following guest-starring stints on shows like Veronica Mars and Scrubs, he landed roles in movies such as Adventureland, Halloween II, Nice Guy Johnny, Margaret and this year's Piranha 3Dd. He can next be seen in High School, arriving on Blu-ray and DVD September 4. I recently had the chance to speak with the actor about the indie comedy, where he portrays a high school valedictorian who tries to ruin his school's new mandatory drug test, since he just tried marijuana for the first time ever. Take a look at what he had to say.

I have to imagine this was quite a read when you first picked up this script. Can you talk about your initial reactions to this crazy story?...

“I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner…” No truer words could represent the existence of John Stalberg Jr.’s High School, a film that sat on a shelf following a blistering run at Sundance in 2010, only to be released theatrically, in a very limited fashion, in June of this year. It’s the simple tale of two former friends whose paths have diverged in their later teen years. Henry Burke (Matt Bush) is the soon-to-be Valedictorian of his class, with a promising future awaiting him at M.I.T. Travis Breaux (Sean Marquette) is a burnout who spends more time wiping sharpie marker penises off his face than he does hitting the books. After a pre-school accident lands them together in detention, Breaux convinces Henry that his path to relaxation must go through the forrest of the sticky green, the cannabis sativa. And so they smoke marijuanna, not knowing that tomorrow will bring about a school-wide...

Piranha 3Dd – DVD Review
When it was initially suggested that Piranha 3Dd wouldn’t be receiving a theatrical release in the UK there was somewhat of an uproar. That wasn’t because we’d seen anything of the sequel to Alexandre Aja’s 2010 remake that promised anything spectacular, but more because Aja’s film was such an unexpected delight and that we assumed the sequel couldn’t deviate too far from that winning formula.

The title too suggested that the same tongue-in-cheek approach had been adopted, so understandably we thought it seemed like a very good thing when the decision was reversed and Piranha 3Dd was given the chance to play at cinemas.

We were wrong.

Ultimately the film only stuck around in theatres for two weeks, and you have to feel sorry for anyone who parted with their hard-earned cash to watch this rubbish. To suggest that doubling the D’s refers to...

Exclusive: High School Blu-ray Deleted Scene
Emmy win 2002
We have an exclusive deleted scene from the Anchor Bay comedy High School, arriving on Blu-ray and DVD September 4. Michael Chiklis (sporting a full head of hair) stars as a strict high school principal who learns that the valedictorian (Matt Bush) switched out regular brownies for pot brownies at the school's bake sale. Take a look at this scene where Michael Chiklis has a weird conversation with Colin Hanks.

High School - Exclusive Deleted Scene

The day after soon-to-be valedictorian Henry Burke (Matt Bush) takes a hit of the chronic for the first time, his school principal (Michael Chiklis) institutes a zero tolerance drug policy and administers a mandatory drug test for all students. Henry has two options: fail and lose his college scholarship, or team up with his stoner friend Breaux (Sean Marquette) to beat the system. They steal a high powered ganja from law student-turned-drug-dealer Psycho Ed (Adrien Brody...

Trailer for Trouble With The Curve Starring Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake
Here is the first trailer for the baseball drama Trouble with the Curve starring Clint Eastwood; so wasn’t he supposed to stop after Gran Torino? What a champ. He stars as an aging baseball scout who goes on one last recruiting trip with this daughter (Amy Adams).

I can’t say any strong writing is being shown off here, weak for Eastwood who certainly knows drama (Million Dollar Baby). He didn’t directed or write this feature, so I guess he’s just along for the ride, no matter how movie of the week it feels. The film also stars John Goodman, Matthew Lillard, Matt Bush, Robert Patrick and Scott Eastwood.

The film opens on September 28th, watch the trailer below:...

‘Trouble With the Curve’ trailer has Clint Eastwood fathering Amy Adams
Clint Eastwood is a veteran of the Hollywood industry, having established his legendary status both in front of and behind the camera. 2008′s Gran Torino was speculated by many to be his swan song as an actor; however, Eastwood proved those rumours false when he signed on to Trouble With the Curve as an aging baseball talent scout. This is the first time Eastwood will be onscreen under the directorial guidance of someone other than himself since 1993′s In the Line of Fire, as his regular second-unit director Robert Lorenz takes the reins this time around. Joining Eastwood onscreen is Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Matthew Lillard, Robert Patrick, and Matt Bush. A trailer for the movie has now been released, which you can see below.

First Trailer for Trouble With The Curve Starring Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake
The first trailer for the baseball drama Trouble with the Curve has been released.  Clint Eastwood stars as an aging scout whose daughter (Amy Adams)  reluctantly agrees to accompany him on one last crucial recruiting trip.  Though the jokes are a bit hokey, the film looks to have a genuinely strong story anchored by the chemistry trifecta of Eastwood, Adams, and Justin Timberlake.  Adams has the chance to shine in a strong female role, and the characters don't seem to be overshadowed by some win-chasing plot device that propels many sports dramas.  Moreover, 90s staple Matthew Lillard pops up in yet another prestigious drama and somehow fits right in. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  Directed by Robert Lorenz, the film also stars John Goodman, Matt Bush, Robert Patrick and Scott Eastwood.  The film opens on September 28th. Clint Eastwood’s ‘Trouble With the Curve’ Moves Up One Week
Right after getting our first official look, Warner Bros. have decided to move up their Clint Eastwood-led drama, Trouble With the Curve, one week from its original date of September 28th. It’s for the reasons your mind, undoubtedly, jumped to at the first word of this news: box office competition. Whereas that original date would bring Rian Johnson‘s Looper and Genndy Tartakovsky‘s Hotel Transylvania, it’s now facing off against House at the End of the Street, Dredd, and End of Watch. The studio, it seems, feels less threatened by these three; don’t ask me why. [Variety]

The film — guaranteed to be your dad’s favorite of the year — is actually directed by Eastwood‘s producing partner, Robert Lorenz, and stars the icon as Gus, an aging, near-blind baseball coach who goes on a road trip to Atlanta with his daughter (Amy Adams) in seeking out an up-and-coming pitcher.

First Poster and Images from The Kitchen with Laura Prepon & Bryan Greenberg
Best known for their work on the small screen, Laura Prepon (That ’70s Show) and Bryan Greenberg (How to Make it in America) are both great in all I’ve seen them in to date, and after starring opposite each other in ABC’s short-lived October Road, they’re set to reunite for the big screen this year in The Kitchen.

The first poster and images have made their way online, giving us a nice first look at the main players of the ensemble comedy, set in its entirety within the titular room.

“In this ensemble comedy set entirely inside a kitchen in Silverlake, a birthday party is about to start.

The party belongs to that of Jennifer (Laura Prepon), who’s about to turn 30. But she is in no mood to party today. She has just left her job, as well as her cheating boyfriend, Paul (Bryan Greenberg). Her...

[First Look] Clint Eastwood Returns to Screen In ‘Trouble’ With Amy Adams & Justin Timberlake
Despite directing seven films in the last six years, 2012 marks the rare year where Clint Eastwood will not be behind the camera. But the Hollywood icon hasn’t disappeared, rather for the first time since 2008′s Gran Torino, the Man with No Name is returning to the screen. Helmed by Eastwood’s frequent assistant director and producer, Robert Lorenz, Trouble with the Curve is a baseball drama starring the Dirty Harry star, along with Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Matthew Lillard, Robert Patrick and Matt Bush.

We’ve got the first look of three of the stars from the film today thanks to Entertainment Weekly. In the film, Eastwood plays an Atlanta Braves scout Gus, who gets some help from his daughter Mickey (Adams) as they go out on a road trip to do their job. On the way they meet Timberlake, playing a “rival young scout” who kicks off a relationship with Gus.

It’s stoner mayhem in the comedy movie High School, which was released in limited theaters in 2010 but held back from DVD and Blu-ray for a couple years.

The film stars Matt Bush (Margaret) as smart kid Henry Burke, school valedictorian who’s heading to MIT on a scholarship. But that gets threatened when his friend Travis (Sean Marquette, Love at First Hiccup) convinces Matt to try pot for the first time just when the school decides to have a mandatory drug test. With his future in jeopardy, Matt tries the only thing he can do to save himself from getting expelled — get the whole school stoned so everyone will fail the drug test. And drug dealer Psycho Ed (Adrien Brody, The Experiment) is the man who can help.

Dimensions Piranha 3Dd Bounces onto DVD and Blu-ray this September
Dimension Films and Anchor Bay will be unleashing John Gulager's comedy-horror sequel 'Piranha 3Dd' onto Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD this coming September (artwork to be confirmed). The insane follow-up to Alexandre Aja's original redo ramps up the gore and nudity but sadly overwhelms itself in the story department. Still it becomes available on all disc formats from 3 September here in the UK and from the 4th over in the Us. The special features that'll be included on the release include features 'The Story Behind the Dd', 'The Hofftastic World of David Hasselhoff', 'Wet and Wild with David Koechner', 'A Lesson with John McEnroe - A Dimension Short Film', the usual deleted scenes and audio commentary with the filmmakers as well as the 'Busey's Bloopers' feature we bought you before the theatrical release.
