Flying Lotus' new film Ash recently debuted at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, and it turned out to be a hit with the critics. With its early reviews, the film has garnered one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of Aaron Paul's career.

Currently,Ash has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%, comparable to Paul's revered films Eye in the Sky (95%), El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (92%), and American Woman (89%). The movie, which also stars Eiza Gonzalez, is part science fiction and part psychological thriller. The result is an entertaining watch for most critics, with Ash praised for its acting, storytelling, and visuals.

"Ash feels outside of time," says Sharai Bohannon of Horror Press. "It’s somehow futuristic but also heavily influenced by the sci-fi horror that came before it. So, nods to John Carpenter’s The Thing and Ridley Scott’s Alien feel at home in this film.

This year’s SXSW Film Festival, taking place in Austin, TX, has unveiled its lineup this afternoon and it’s another insanely packed year for horror premieres.

While the Midnighter section is dedicated to the genre lovers, SXSW 2025 has filled its Headliner section and beyond with buzzy, highly anticipated titles including Flying Lotus‘s sci-fi horror movie Ash, Christopher Landon‘s ode to Brian De Palma in Drop, and A24’s Death of a Unicorn. Also look for Clown in a Cornfield, the film adaptation of Adam Cesare’s YA slasher novel.

The South by Southwest Conference and Festivals is nearly upon us. And today the festival revealed the lineup for its highly anticipated 32nd edition. Among the titles in this year’s festival include Ben Affleck sequel “The Accountant 2,” A24’s “Death of a Unicorn,” and an opening night screening of Seth Rogen’s new Apple TV+ series “The Studio” — “alongside a broad slate of Feature Films, TV projects, and Xr Experiences” (according to the official release).

Additionally, Christopher Landon’s new Blumhouse thriller “Drop” and Mimi Cave’s “Holland” will also mark festival outings this year.

The SXSW Film & TV Festival has unveiled the lineup for its 32nd edition, kicking off with the premiere of Apple TV+’s show biz comedy The Studio.

Co-created by and starring Seth Rogen, The Studio follows a legacy Hollywood movie studio striving to survive in a world where it is increasingly difficult for art and business to live together. The show is set to unveil its first two episodes on March 26.

South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals has unveiled the first wave of its film and TV lineup for the 32nd edition, which begins with with an Opening Night TV Premiere of the eagerly-anticipated Apple TV+ series “The Studio” starring Seth Rogen, who also serves as writer, director, and executive producer alongside Evan Goldberg.

The lineup for the SXSW film and TV festival has been announced with new projects from Seth Rogen, Ben Affleck, Jenn Ortega and Nicole Kidman set to premiere at the Austin fest.

Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Hollywood-set comedy series The Studio will kick off SXSW as the opening night TV screening. Rogen stars as the newly appointed head of an embattled studio as he and his executives struggle to make their movies relevant.

XYZ Films and Variance Films have set a March 7, 2025 theatrical release for Seven Veils starring Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried (Mank). The drama reunites Seyfried with writer/director Atom Egoyan. The pair previously worked together on 2009’s Chloe with Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, and Max Thieriot.

In addition to Seyfried, the film stars Rebecca Liddiard, Douglas Smith, Mark O’Brien, Vinessa Antoine, Ambur Braid, and Michael Kupfer-Radecky. Seven Veils debuted at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and screened at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.

“After years away, theater director Jeanine (Seyfried) re-enters the opera world to stage her former mentor’s most famous work. Haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past, Jeanine allows her repressed trauma to color the present as her personal and professional lives begin to unravel,” reads the official synopsis.

Sky Original Films has revealed the trailer and key images for the upcoming horror comedy, ‘Get Away,’ starring, written and produced by Nick Frost.

Set in Sweden, the film follows a family’s holiday to a remote getaway – but the trip takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they’re on is inhabited by a serial killer.

Frost stars alongside Aisling Bea, Sebastian Croft, and newcomer Maisie Ayres.

Comcast-owned Sky will release the original film Get Away, a new horror comedy starring, written by and produced by Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and directed by Steffen Haars (New Kids Turbo, Krazy House) in the U.K.

IFC Films and Shudder, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural programming, announced today that they have acquired the North American rights to Steffen Haars’ comedic slasher movie, “Get Away.” The film, which was previously titled “Svalta,” was written by Nick Frost (“Paul”), who also stars alongside Aisling Bea (“This Way Up”) Sebastian Croft (“Heartstopper”), and newcomer Maisie Ayres. The film will have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2024 in September. It will then be released exclusively in theaters on Dec. 6, 2024, followed by its Shudder debut in 2025. Like Shudder, IFC is a division of AMC Networks.

“Get Away” follows a family’s vacation to a remote getaway. The trip takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they’re on is inhabited by a serial killer.

Exclusive: Sundance documentary Never Look Away, the directorial debut of actress Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), has been sold by XYZ to Greenwich Entertainment for all rights in North America, and to Kaleidoscope for all rights in UK.

Both distributors have committed to theatrical releases in the territories. Kaleidoscope will also take over rest of world sales. The film is set to have additional screenings at SXSW this weekend.

The film puts a spotlight on the late, swashbuckling CNN combat camerawoman, Margaret Moth, who risked it all to put the viewer inside the conflict. When a fateful injury got in the way of her appetite for danger and adrenaline, she had a decision to make about her career and survival.

Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit.” And apparently they did kill it, because Deadline reports that Amazon’s Prime Video has just secured the international rights to the film in a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10 million. The film is currently in post-production, so we don’t know when Prime Video will be releasing it.

Fast And Furious franchise star Jordana Brewster and rising Australian actress Teagan Croft have joined Martin Henderson on XYZ Films and Sentient’s upcoming shark thriller Alphas, which has scored a raft of major pre-sales.

Signature has acquired the title for the UK, Australia & New Zealand, and Canada, SquareOne has picked up German-speaking Europe, and CDC and Zima will distribute in Latin America and Brazil.

Exclusive: Ahead of EFM 2024, XYZ Films has promoted James Emanuel Shapiro to President of Domestic Distribution, upping Alex Williams to Sr. Manager, Acquisitions and Development.

Shapiro, formerly the Executive Vice President of U.S. Distribution, reports to XYZ CEO Nick Spicer and Partner Nate Bolotin. The promotions come following XYZ’s recent hiring of Celine Lin for the role of Senior VP of International Sales.

XYZ launched its domestic distribution arm in 2021 and has since then released films from Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (Something in the Dirt), Nic Cassavetes (God Is a Bullet) and Michelle Garza (Huesera: The Bone Woman).

Netflix has acquired “Skywalkers: A Love Story” following the documentary feature’s debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

“Skywalkers,” which premiered Jan. 18 at the Ray Theatre, follows daring couple Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus from Moscow, who saved their relationship and career by climbing one of the world’s tallest buildings. Per the official logline: “A daredevil couple journey across the globe to climb the world’s last super skyscraper and perform a bold acrobatic stunt on the spire.” The documentary took seven years of production.

“Skywalkers” is directed and written by Jeff Zimbalist, with Maria Bukhonina as co-director. Zimbalist and Bukhonina produced the film alongside Library Films’ Chris Smith and XYZ Films’ head of documentary Tamir Ardon, while XYZ Films’ Nick Spicer executive produced. XYZ Films and Library Films were co-studios on the All Rise Films production.

2024 Sundance marks something of a milestone in the documentary space for XYZ Films, best known for championing global genre fare like The Raid, Mandy, and The Invitation.

On Thursday opening night the Los Angeles-based company premieres two documentaries which it produced or executive produced. After years of relatively random engagement in the non-scripted format, producing the likes of Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce’s Framing John DeLorean (2019) and Marq Evans’s 2021 Tribeca premiere Claydream (2022), the documentary division led by Tamir Ardon is in full flow, with multiple projects in the pipeline.

Sony has just unveiled the details for the 4K ultra HD Blu-ray of The Raid: Redemption. Physical media collectors rejoice as you can now see a higher resolution version of the popular martial arts film that became the world’s introduction of Iko Uwais after his debut in Merantau, which was also directed by The Raid: Redemption‘s Gareth Evans. The 2011 hard-hitting Indonesian action film wowed audiences with its non-stop martial arts sequences and gritty suspense about a Swat team becoming trapped in a building filled with criminals. Canadian director Atom Egoyan is bringing his latest movie, Seven Veils, to the Toronto Film Festival for a world premiere, with Amanda Seyfried in the lead role as a tortured opera director.

Seyfried reteamed with her Chloe director Egoyan for the opera-themed drama where she plays Jeanine, a theatre director remounting her former mentor’s most famous work, an adaptation of the opera Salome from composer Richard Strauss, based on the play by Oscar Wilde. Nine months ago, it was announced that Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had signed on to star in Ash, a sci-fi thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison. Then, two months ago, we learned that Thompson and Gordon-Levitt both had to drop out of the project and were replaced by Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Filming on Ash is now underway, with González and Paul in the lead roles – and Deadline has revealed that they’re being joined in the cast by Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-o), Kate Elliott (The Gulf), and Iko Uwais of the Raid films.

González will be playing a woman who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Paul) comes to investigate the scene, she must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

The clip shows the fraught relationship between a mother (Snook) and her daughter (Lily Latorre) as the latter begins to act strangely. The film also stars Damon Herriman, Greta Scacchi and Trevor Jamieson.

Filmed in Melbourne, Run Rabbit Run is directed by Aussie filmmaker Daina Reid, known for helming episodes of the television series The Shining Girls and The Handmaid’s Tale, with a script by Hannah Kent.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s review described Run Rabbit Run as “moody and atmospheric” and that it “easily builds tension and dread.”

The company will launch its first New Visions slate at the Cannes Film Market next month with In Flames, the feature debut of Pakistani-Canadian director Zarrar Kahn. The Urdu-language horror movie, which was just picked for the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight lineup, follows a young woman who is tormented by vivid hallucinations after the death of her boyfriend. Other titles in the New Visions slate include the Czech science fiction title Restore Point from director Robert Hloz, and Irish folk horror All You Need Is Death from Very Extremely Dangerous helmer Paul Duane.
