The Surfer (2024) Movie Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed: Can Breaking the Cycle of Masculinity Set the Surfer Free?
Image
Lorcan Finnegan’s “The Surfer” is a psychological thriller about a man trying to buy back his father’s old house. However, with Nicolas Cage in the lead role, it is far from a casual boiling-point affair. This absurdist film uses a balls-to-the-walls approach to show a man’s slow descent into madness. It’s the kind of unhinged work that would make sense only with someone like Cage at the front and center, just as it did with John Woo’s “Face/Off” or Tom Gormican’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.” Finnegan’s film embraces Cage’s unique acting approach to blend its heightened tension with his trademark humor. Yet, it’s not all fun and games for him, and the film slowly gets to the point of it all.

The Surfer (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Matthew Shear’s ‘Fantasy Life’, ‘The Accountant 2’ Among SXSW Audience Award Winners
Image
SXSW on Monday said that Matthew Shear’s Fantasy Life, Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s reteam The Accountant 2 and Paige Bethmann’s documentary Remaining Native were among the big winners of the 32nd annual festival’s Audience Awards.

The news of the honors across the Austin fest’s competition, narrative, documentary, shorts, TV and Xr Experience sidebars comes after the 2025 edition revealed its juried awards last week, with honors going to Amy Wang‘s thriller Slanted for Best Narrative Feature among others.

Fantasy Life, Shear’s feature writing and directorial debut, won the marquee Narrative Feature Audience Award. It stars Shear as a man who suffers a panic attack and stumbles into a job babysitting his psychiatrist’s three granddaughters, where he begins to fall for the girls’ mother, played by Amanda Peet. Peet earlier won a special jury prize for acting.

The Headliners section audience prize went to The Accountant 2,...

Today's Connections Hints & Answers For March 11, 2024 (Puzzle #273)
Image
Monday Connections is the best way to start out a new work week and today's word groups are a bit of a head-scratcher. There are a couple categories that could house multiple words in today's answers, but if you're a Connections veteran, and you check out our hints below, you should get a quick and easy win for today. If you do find yourself struggling to solve the daily Connections though, there are easier alternatives.

Spellie is a Wordle-like game with an adjustable difficulty. This is great for a more relaxed game, or younger audiences who want to get in on the word-guessing action. If you're a movie buff, there's also Framed which has players trying to pick a movie based only on a few frames from the film. This one is great because it starts with more obscure shots and slowly moves into more obvious pictures as the attempts begin to dwindle.

Bum, Noi, John And Sompan In ‘6ixtynin9,’ Explained: What Is The Mystery Of The Afterlife?
Image
Have you ever wondered what happens after we shuffle off this mortal coil? It’s one of those questions that has been bugging humanity since, well, forever. It’s the kind of mystery that’s a bit tricky to discuss with your friends over a cup of coffee. Now, here’s where 6ixtynin9 comes into play. This series does something really surprising. When people pass away, they meet people who look like regular folks, using computers to help them find their way to the afterlife, while ambulances are ready to take them to heaven. It throws away the gloomy, somber, and kind of scary view we often have of the afterlife. Instead, it takes us on a ride that suggests there’s more to life after death than we ever imagined.

Arctic Monkeys Get the Face On With First Full ‘Mardy Bum’ Performance in Over 10 Years
Image
Arctic Monkeys kicked off their concert in Bristol, England, with a deep-cut fan favorite they haven’t properly performed in over 10 years: “Mardy Bum,” off their 2006 debut Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.

An illustration of the bouts of trivial bickering and prickly moods that punctuate any relationship, “Mardy Bum” has barely been part of the Arctic Monkeys’ live repertoire since the mid-2000s. They performed it regularly while supporting Whatever People Say I Am in 2006 and 2007 (per Setlist.fm), then brought it back — in a slightly altered,...

A Candid Chat With Two Managers on Streaming Paychecks, Signings and Running a Boutique Firm
Image
Mel McKeon and Laura Myones Ruf have been working side by side so long that it’s common they finish each other’s sentences. That comes in helpful, especially now, as the veteran talent managers have a lot to talk about.

It’s been a year since the two, who started working together in 1997 with Myones starting as McKeon’s assistant, rebranded their McKeon/Myones Entertainment to Afa Prime Talent, a transition that has signaled a new era for their management-production company.

Together, they have maintained a client roster of busy actors including Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sarah Shahi (Black Adam, Sex/Life), Alona Tal (Cross), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool 2, Invasion), Vivian Wu (Afterparty, Irma Vep), Michael Trucco (Average Joe), Thomas Barbusca (The Mick, Chad), Sean Patrick Thomas (Till, For All Mankind and The Boys spinoff Gen V), Missi Pyle (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Y: The Last Man), Elaine Hendrix...

10 MCU Actors Who Appeared On Sitcoms
Image
As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continues to rule the 2022 box office (with it almost becoming Phase 4's second highest grossing movie), it's impossible not to think about how far some of the movie stars have come since their careers began. Danai Gurira rose to prominence after starring in the HBO drama, Treme; Letitia Wright made a couple of guest appearances on Doctor Who and Top Boy, and Martin Freeman and Winston Duke appeared two huge sitcoms prior to joining the MCU (The Office UK and Modern Family).

While the MCU does boast a talented roster of stars, it does appear that Freeman and Duke aren't the only actors who have also appeared in several iconic TV sitcoms as well. It shouldn't really come as a surprise to fans either - after all, these experiences have likely helped them to create the hilarious characters and scenes they love today.

India still in search of ideal playing XI for T20 World Cup; injury major concern
Image
In an ideal world, skipper Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and even the fans could have finalised India’s best-suited playing XI for the 2022 T20 World Cup till now but there is uncertainty about a few players as of now.

Injury to two premier pacers — Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel — is the biggest concern for India, going into the showpiece event in Australia. Both bowlers haven’t been picked for the 2022 Asia Cup, which begins on August 27 in the UAE, and are currently undergoing rehab at the Nca in Bengaluru.

It has been learnt that Bumrah has some back issues and he should be fit for the World Cup but Harshal, with a side strain, may need a long time to recover, and he even could miss the flight to Australia.

In batting, Virat Kohli and Kl Rahul have had very less game time for India this year because of different reasons.

The Biggest Influence On David Lynch Didn't Come From A Filmmaker
David Lynch
If you're a creative person, you probably understand more than anyone else that inspiration can come from anywhere. While many artists find themselves influenced by other artists or art movements, others have gone on record saying that things like nature or sociopolitical landscapes have inspired them to tell their story through an artistic lens.

This can certainly be said for acclaimed filmmaker David Lynch, whose work often incorporates surreal imagery as allegories. The character of the Bum in "Mulholland Drive," which symbolizes the hidden horrors of Hollywood, and the nuclear bomb in "Twin Peaks: The Return," an allegory for death and rebirth, are...
