Former Olympic runner (he competed in 1964) and holder of the British men's 100 metres recored.

He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1987 in before being awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 2004 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to Parliament. He is a Member of Parliament for North East Fife.

He became a QC (Queens Counsel) in 1982.

He was awarded the Member of the Order of the Companion of Honour (CH) in the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to public and political service. He is a Member of the Parliament for the North East Fife in Scotland.
