Image
Action movies are a favored pastime of moviegoers, thanks to the genre's visually engaging stories that typically follow heroes taking on an oversized army of bad guys. The 2010s had its ups and downs when it comes to action, with some incredibly underwhelming sequels to classic franchises stacked against some brilliant fresh films. With some brilliant choreography, instant-classic quotes, and an ensemble of interesting heroes and villains, the decade houses many of the best action films of all time. The Raid’s 2 Punching Scenes Have A Deeper Meaning Than You Think
Image
The two punching scenes in The Raid movies each have a deeper meaning relating to the two film’s stories, and this is something that many viewers miss upon first watch. Writer-director Gareth Evans and leading man Iko Uwais burst onto the action movie scene with 2012’s The Raid: Redemption, which follows a Jakarta police unit in a deadly raid of an apartment complex populated by the city’s worst criminals. 2014’s The Raid 2 followed up its predecessor with Uwais’s protagonist Rama going undercover to infiltrate a Jakarta crime family.

The Raid movies became action classics overnight, with their amazing fight sequences making a martial arts star of Iko Uwais, along with his co-stars, Joe Taslim and Yayan Ruhian. Both of The Raid movies also include scenes of Rama executing punching drills while alone. In both cases, each punching scene in The Raid and The Raid 2 is...

The Meticulous Planning That Went Into The Raid: Redemption's Martial Arts Mayhem
Image
If you grew up in a small Welsh village and studied for a career in documentary filmmaking, what would be the logical next step? Make a string of high-intensity Indonesian action movies, of course. And that's exactly what director Gareth Evans did after becoming captivated by the martial art of Pencak silat. His breakthrough effort, "The Raid" or in the US "The Raid: Redemption" gained widespread recognition for its non-stop action and brutal fight scenes. The movie showcased Pencak silat, and relative newcomer Iko Uwais as rookie cop Rama, in a way that hadn't really been seen before — at least in the west. And the plot? As simple as 20 cops fighting their way through 30 floors of a tower block to bring down one drug dealer.

And it was a winning formula, with reviews for the movie proving as bombastic as the film itself. The Hollywood Reporter called it a "hard-driving,...

Film Review: The Raid (2011) by Gareth Evans
Martial art films are an entertaining genre. Usually, they are simple plot wise, but pulling off a good martial art film is a big challenge; pulling off a great one, a monumental task. “The Raid” is one such great movie. Released on 23rd March 2012, and directed by Gareth Evans, this is an action packed movie, which leaves you at the edge of your seat all along the way.

The story revolves around Rama (played by Iko Uwais), who is part of a 20 man elite police squad. They have a mission to raid a tenement in Jakarta’s slums. The building is run by a crime lord, Tama Riyadi (played by Ray Sahetapy), who rents rooms there to criminals looking for refuge. Tama has two lieutenants, Andi (played by Donny Alamsyah) and Mad Dog (played by Yayan Ruhian). To add to the complexity of the situation, Andi is Rama’s estranged brother.

He also believes in laying on a good smackdown and does exactly that throughout the trailer for his upcoming futuristic action film 3.Set amidst the conflict between a secular government and religious rebels in a near future world audiences will recognize Donny Alamsyah and Cecep Arif Rahman from the Raid films among the cast but there are a handful of other fighters in there who also appear quite strong. You know an action hero is the baddest of badasses when he or she walks in and the room goes silent. 100 Essential Action Scenes: One on One Fights
Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. A good fight scene is built into the fabric of an action film such that you can sense it coming like a storm on the horizon. It’s in the details of the opponents: the cracking of knuckles, the puffing of chests, the staredowns that say, “It’s about to go down.” A good fight scene makes you want to cover your eyes yet is impossible to look away from. You get tingly waiting for the violence to erupt, and if it’s done its job, you come away dizzy, invigorated, or even nauseated.

Di Balik 98 Has A Revolutionairy Trailer
Di Balik 98 (currently without an English title but literally meaning "Behind '98") tells the story, seen from many perspectives, of Indonesia's recent revolution in 1998, which resulted in the fall of the three-decade-long presidency of Suharto. At the moment Di Balik 98 is the top grossing film this year in Indonesia. This shows how the 1998 Reformation is still a very engaging piece of history for Indonesian Millennials, despite many people having opposing viewpoints on the subject. The film is directed by the very well respected Indonesian actor Lukman Sardi (of 7/24 and Rainbow Troops fame), and among the ensemble cast are Chelsea Islan (Merry Riana), Boy William (Comic 8), Donny Alamsyah (The Raid) and Agus Kuncoro (Garuda Superhero). ‘The Raid 2: Berandal’ Review
Stars: Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, Arifin Putra, Julie Estelle, Donny Alamsyah, Oka Antara, Alex Abbad, Tio Pakusodewo | Written and Directed by Gareth Evans

In 2012 Gareth Evans burst onto the scene with The Raid: Redemption. He took a simple concept and filled it with some of the most engaging and inventive action seen in years. Now two years later he is back at again to prove it was not a fluke. The Raid 2 shows Evans has a knack for pushing the boundaries of cinematic action. With a larger budget behind him, he ups the scale of each set-piece without hindering his cleverness. Breaking away from the simple concept of the original does lead to an overly plotting story that gets lost in its own elaborate setup. Still, any fan of the original or any fan of action would be doing themselves a huge disservice if they do not experience what...

'The Raid 2' Interview with Director Gareth Evans | Exclusive
Gareth Evans
Director Gareth Evans revolutionized the action genre in 2012 with the bone-crunching thriller The Raid: Redemption, which centered on Rama (Iko Uwais), a rookie cop who takes part in the raid of a 30-story building that houses Jakarta's most dangerous criminals. Somehow, the Indonesian filmmaker found a way to top that massive spectacle with The Raid 2, which expands nationwide April 11 following a successful limited release. Iko Uwais is back as Rama in this sequel, set just a few hours after The Raid: Redemption, as he goes deep undercover to root out the crooked cops and expose the corrupt politicians pulling the strings, to put his family out of harm's way. I recently had the chance to speak with Gareth Evans via satellite, where he revealed that he actually wrote this sequel long before he made The Raid: Redemption, while discussing how these actors actually throw real punches and kicks in this action-thriller,...

The Raid 2 is kicking more ass in a shiny new trailer
Just a quick update this one. Another trailer has landed for The Raid 2, with some new footage thrown in for good measure. Let's face it, even a few seconds of new footage is enough to keep our expectations souring. So what do we know about The Raid 2: Berandal so far? We know that Berandal picks up two hours after the events of The Raid, and that the film is likely to pit Rama (Uwais) against his brother, Andi (Donny Alamsyah), following the latter’s inheritance of his own criminal empire. Other than that, we can only guess at what Evans has in store. Or at least we could, up until now. The Raid 2 is scheduled for release in the U.S. in March 2014 and Evans has gone on record to say that the second film is the one he wanted to make in the first place. If The Raid was his back-up plan,...

New trailer for The Raid 2: Berandal kicks in
Hold onto your hats folks. A new trailer has dropped for Gareth Evans action packed sequel to The Raid, probably the most critically acclaimed action movie of the last ten years. You can read our review of the original movie here, but I'm pretty sure you'll be wanting to check out the trailer for yourself first. The first trailer offered a mere glimpse of the martial arts mayhem expected from the second instalment, but this one shows just how much larger in scope the highly anticipated sequel will be.

The Raid: Redemption Sequel Berandal to Take Place 2 Hours After Original Movie
The Raid 2 (2014)
Back in February, we reported that Sony Pictures acquired the rights to a sequel for the popular action-thriller The Raid: Redemption. We haven't heard much about this follow-up, entitled Berandal since then, except that Gareth Evans is returning to direct. Yesterday, the filmmaker teased new details regarding Berandal through his Twitter account, revealing the story will take place just hours after The Raid: Redemption's ending, and that production is scheduled to take place very soon.

Ok Raid 2 tidbit, we start shooting on January 19th and the first scene takes place 2hrs after the first film ends.

— Gareth Evans (@ghuwevans) January 2, 2013

Iko Uwais is believed to reprise his role as Rama in Berandal, although no further casting details have been revealed. With a production start date just weeks away, hopefully more details will be unveiled regarding this action-packed follow-up.

The Raid: Redemption was released March 23rd, 2012 and stars Iko Uwais,...

The Raid: Redemption a.k.a Serbuan Maut
And Please, Don’T Forget To Enjoy Yourselves

“The Raid: Redemption” has been all over the news recently so my hopes were indeed very high. Now let’s see if it was all hype or not. Here’s the quick and painless answer: it’s legit, folks. Hardcore, intense, well thought out action sequences that we all love and crave. A decent and somewhat original story. And a couple of fresh new faces to keep you on your toes. The ‘good stuff’, in other words, for any fans of action flicks and the likes.

So here is the movie’s premise in two lines: an elite squad of Indonesian cops/S.W.A.T. decide to take down an entire building complex owned by a ruthless gang of maniacs (think zombies with brains). Very much in hierarchical fashion, they need to clear the entire area, floor by floor, apartment by apartment.

The Raid

Review originally posted on February 27th 2012…

Deep in the heart of Jakarta’s slums lies an impenetrable safe house for the world’s most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. However today is different. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, Tama (Sahetaphy), offers lifelong, and free, sanctuary to every killer, rapist and thief in the building in exchange for dispatching the Swat team. Now Rama (Uwais) a rookie member of the elite swat team,...

Movie Review: 'The Raid: Redemption'
The Raid: Redemption

Starring Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Doni Alamsyah

Directed by Gareth Evans

Rated R

There is a moment in the movie Fanboys, which if you haven’t seen, is about a group of Star Wars loving friends who set out to see The Phantom Menace. So at the end of the movie, the friends are in a theater, with a couple hundred other Star Wars fans. The movie starts and the group lights up with excitement. One of the friends turns to the others and says “What if this movie sucks”? An obvious nod to the hatred that would later befall Phantom Menace but it’s a moment I felt right before The Raid: Redemption started to play. My excitement was at fever pitch.

Luckily, that prophecy never came true.

It’s hard to describe a movie like The Raid without using simple terminology like “This movie is...
