Stick McGhee(1917-1961)

IMDbProStarmeterSee rank
Blues singer/guitarist Stick McGhee was born Granville McGhee in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1917. He came from a musical family--his brother was blues guitarist Brownie McGhee--and, after serving a hitch in the US Army during World War II, he moved to New York City, where his brother Brownie was already living, and the two began playing blues clubs in the New York City area. Stick also had his own blues group, Stick McGhee and His Buddies.

In 1949 Stick signed a contract with Atlantic Records, and his first record was "Drinking Wine, Spo-Dee-O-Dee, Drinking Wine", which shot to #2 on the R&B charts. Unfortunately, his follow-up records weren't as successful, and he eventually left Atlantic and recorded for such labels as London, King and Savoy. He later partnered up with harmonica player Sonny Terry, with whom his brother had worked for many years.

Stick McGhee died of cancer in August of 1961.
