Luke Eve and Maria Albiñana get ‘ReCancelled’
Image
Luke Eve isn’t sure what’s real or scripted anymore.

Last year, he created with his fiancé, actor and writer Maria Albiñana, the lockdown-themed web series Cancelled.

It was a dramatisation of their real life: Eve and Albiñana had travelled in March 2020 to Spain to get married, only to have the pandemic interrupt. They cancelled their wedding two days out, and then spent they ensuing months in strict lockdown in their Spanish apartment – together with Eve’s mum, Karen, who had travelled from Australia for the wedding.

It proved fertile ground for a short-form series, shot on a mobile phone with Eve, Albiñana and Karen the entire cast and crew.

Funded by Screen Australia and released weekly on Facebook Watch, Cancelled garnered 2.5 million views and a Rose d’Or nomination.

Now, Eve and Albiñana are launching their follow up: ReCancelled.

It follows the couple – still in Spain – as they...

Screen Australia senior online investment manager Lee Naimo said the projects showcased engaging storytelling across a mix of genres.

“We are always looking for projects that have solid pathways to audience and we are very impressed by the range shown in this slate, whether it’s via platforms such as ABC iview or targeting significant...

Luke Eve’s ‘I Met A Girl’ finds a happy ending
Image
Sometimes it’s the things that don’t quite work out that lead us onto the path we’re actually meant to be on.

Director Luke Eve worked with his friend from Aftrs, producer Adam Dolman, and twin brother, writer Glen Dolman, for years on a feature, The Truth About Jack, only to have it fall down at the last hurdle.

It was a devastating moment. However, by that point, the trio had already formed a strong bond, felt they had momentum and wanted to continue to collaborate.

It was then Glen pulled out one of the first scripts he’d ever written, passion project I Met A Girl, a romantic story about a man with schizophrenia who meets the girl of his dreams – who may be just in head.

In the interim, the team also made web series High Life. It starred Odessa Young as a girl with bipolar...

Lily Sullivan in ‘I Met a Girl.’

Gravitas Ventures will launch Luke Eve’s romantic drama I Met a Girl in the US as a Premium VOD release on September 11, followed a month later by VOD on a dozen digital platforms.

The original plan was a cinema release for the film starring Brenton Thwaites, Lily Sullivan, Joel Jackson, Peter Rowsthorn and Zahra Newman.

But in light of widespread cinema closures, producer Adam Dolman tells If: “Gravitas wanted to release the film as soon as possible to take advantage of the growth in the VOD business.”

Scripted by Adam’s brother Glen Dolman (Bloom), the plot follows Thwaites’ Devon, a 20-something aspiring musician with schizophrenia, who relies on his older brother Nick (Jackson) to get by. On a downward spiral, Devon is saved by Sullivan’s Lucy – a mysterious girl who is just as impulsive and romantic as he is.

Brenton Thwaites and Lily Sullivan in I Met a Girl (2020)
Brenton Thwaites Hopes She is Real in Romance 'I Met a Girl' Trailer
Brenton Thwaites and Lily Sullivan in I Met a Girl (2020)
"What are you waiting for, kid?" Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for a romantic drama titled I Met a Girl, marking the feature film directorial debut of Australian TV director Luke Eve. An aspiring musician named Devon embarks on an epic, cross-country journey to find the woman of his dreams - who may be all in his head. Brenton Thwaites stars in this as Devon, a musician with schizophrenia, who meets a girl who is just as impulsive and romantic as he is. She disappears by the morning but leaves a note saying "meet me in Sydney." Is she real...? He must travel all the way there to find out. The cast includes Joel Jackson, Lily Sullivan, Zahra Newman, and Anita Hegh. This looks super sappy and cliche. Not exactly the most original idea, but put some good music over this story of love, and it'll make anyone's heart beat fast.

Joining him in the writers’ room are Giula Sandler, Matt Ford, Tommy Murphy and Catherine S McMullen. Dolman scripted four of the six eps of the first series, which was named Drama Series Production of the Year at last...

.

When Claire van der Boom auditioned for the role of a younger version of Diane Keaton.s character in the Us movie Life Itself, the director told her she was the only one who didn.t try to impersonate Keaton as Annie Hall in the classic Woody Allen movie.

That was the clincher and the Los Angeles-based Australian actress started shooting the film directed by Englishman Richard Loncraine (Wimbledon, My One and Only) in New York last week.

Adapted from Jill Ciment.s novel Heroic Measures, the film stars Keaton and Morgan Freeman as Ruth and Alex, a couple whose life is disrupted when the East Village apartment where they lived for 40 years is put up for sale, a bidding war ensues and Manhattan falls under a terrorism threat.

Claire plays Ruth as she meets Alex, an artist, when she models for his paintings.

Luke Eve on Great Southern Land
This article originally appeared in If Magazine #148 (August-September 2012).

For his latest project, director Luke Eve took to the skies . literally. ABC TV.s new documentary series Great Southern Land had him soaring in helicopters and scaling skyscrapers in order to obtain a unique top-down view of the systems and networks that make our society tick.

It was a challenging project for the former Tropfest winner in more ways than one: .Before I shot this I was scared of heights,. he confesses to If Magazine. .Yet I spent the majority of the shoot either up on tall buildings or hanging out of helicopters. It was a bizarre project for me to take on board, considering that..

The series concept came from executive producer Steve Bibb of Cordell Jigsaw, who was inspired by international equivalents Britain From Above and America Revealed. .We look at systems we take for granted in everyday life,...
