X-Men Introduces New Power Rule, Making Its Heroes More Powerful Than Ever
Image
Warning! Spoilers for X-Men #16 ahead!

The X-Menfranchise just introduced a new drug capable of boosting mutant powers into its lore; "D-x," a synthetic compound, has been developed by Beast and Magneto over the past several issues, in order to help combat the effects of the latter's "Resurrection-Linked Degenerative Sickness," which has largely kept the Master of Magnetism sidelined since his triumphant return from beyond the grave.

X-Men #16, written by Jed McKay, with art by Netho Diaz, features a pivotal progression of the franchise’s “R-lds” storyline, as Magneto tests “dextroamphetamine-x,” which causes him to proclaim: “for the first time since I came to Alaska…I feel like Magneto.”

“R-lds” has been a slow burn plot so far, but the further introduction of “D-x,” and the potential complications of its usage that Beast warns of in this issue, suggest the story of the mutant disease, and its potential cure, is...

Even Diehard Moon Knight Fans May Have Missed the Hero's Fourth Identity
Image
Few superheroes have as complicated a relationship to their identity as Moon Knight. Moon Knight doesn't have just one secret identity; he has three. Between Marc Spector, Jake Lockley, and Steven Grant, most fans can be forgiven for thinking those are all the identities Moon Knight has used, but he did have a short-lived fourth alter ego.

The surprising fourth identity was revealed in Moon Knight #22 by Jed McKay and Alessandro Cappuccio. In this run, Steven Grant's wealth, which is how Moon Knight is able to operate, was completely drained by the new villain known as Zodiac. With all of his wealth stolen, it's unclear exactly how Moon Knight continued to operate the Midnight Mission and keep all of his equipment maintained.

Curiously, at the same time as Moon Knight's money woes begin, one of his oldest enemies, the Midnight Man, returns and begins robbing specifically the corrupt and criminal.

X-Men Gets Its Own Civil War, As New Epic Crossover Permanently Breaks the Team in Two
Image
After an era of unparalleled unity for Marvel's mutants, the relaunched X-Men franchise will once more pit the franchise's heroes against one another, in a conflict no one could have predicted, as its two flagship series Gail Simone's Uncanny X-Men and Jed MacKay's adjectiveless X-Men come together for the thrilling Raid on Graymalkin crossover event.

Raid on Graymalkin will be a four-issue crossover, running through X-Men #8-9 and Uncanny X-Men #7-8. The crossover will be released weekly, with the titles alternating, meaning it will be a quick and action-packed storyline, one that can be expected to have major repercussions for the next year of X-Men storytelling.

In the new "From the Ashes" era of X-Men, the former Xavier Institute has been converted into a prison for powerful mutants, who both X-Men teams will seek to liberate including, as it turns out, the disgraced Professor Charles Xavier.

Doctor Strange Considers 1 Marvel Movie Hero "The Scariest Man I Have Ever Met" (Including Mephisto)
Image
From the depths of Hell to entire dimensions of eldritch monstrosities, Doctor Strange has seen (and often fought) the most chilling horrors that the Marvel Universe has to offer - but none of them scare him as much as Wolverine. Asked his opinion about the Best There Is, the Sorcerer Supreme was frank that he considered the X-Men's hard-living hero the scariest individual he's ever known - including Mephisto himself.

The admission came in 2011's Wolverine #16, from Jason Aaron and Goran Sudzuka. In the issue, Logan's current girlfriend - investigative reporter Melita Garner - interviews various Marvel heroes to produce a biography of Logan's life. The Avengers and X-Men try to sum up how they feel about Wolverine, with Doctor Strange in particular calling him, "The scariest man I have ever met. And I have literally shaken hands with the Devil."

Strange's is one of the most negative opinions of Logan,...

Even Doctor Strange Admits He's Terrified of 1 Upcoming MCU Villain
Image
Even Doctor Strange is afraid of the legendary Doctor Doom, setting up an exciting dynamic for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, after taking Doctor Stranges mantle as Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom has transcended his already legendary status to cement his legacy as Marvels greatest sorcerer, genius, and monarch. However, his current reign as Sorcerer Supreme isnt the first time Stephen Strange has acknowledged Dooms power.

In Doctor Strange #5 written by Jed McKay, with art by Pasqual Ferry Strange acknowledges the fearsome power of Victor Von Doom, establishing the Latverian dictator as one of the few forces the Marvel Universe's most iconic Sorcerer Supreme actually fears.

Trained in the mystical arts by his mother, a Romani witch, Victor fully embraced his magical potential after her death. As an adult, and the supreme ruler of Latveria, Victor Von Doom has amassed an overwhelming amount of power over his life,...

Marvel's New Sorcerer Supreme Proves Doctor Strange Can Give Anyone the Title & Powers
Image
By gifting his power and title of Sorcerer Supreme to Doctor Doom in Blood Hunt #5, Doctor Strange fundamentally altered fans' perception of the title and its role in the Marvel cosmos. Doom is imbued with a fragment of Doctor Strange's soul, which Strange explains was also the case for his ally Clea, when she took on the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme in his absence. Marvel's magical hierarchy has been upended by this revelation about the rules of succession for the Sorcerer Supreme, showing that anyone could potentially become the Sorcerer Supreme under the right conditions.

Warning: Spoilers for Blood Hunt #5

Doctor Strange's mantle as Sorcerer Supreme is one of the most powerful and most important stations in all Marvel Comics and Marvel just revealed how Strange could potentially hand the title over to any character under the right circumstances. In this way, the publisher radically redefines the meaning of the Sorcerer Supreme role,...

In 2023, Marvel Began Assembling A Twisted Version of the Avengers
Image
Marvel has introduced evil counterparts of its most recognizable characters, creating a potential villainous version of the Avengers. Characters like Toranos, General Strange, and Hydra-Cap are direct correlations to Thor, Doctor Strange, and Captain America. Feilong's takeover of Stark Industries and use of Iron Man tech represents the malformation of everything Iron Man stands for, and to this point he has done everything short of suiting up in his own armor.

The past year has been an ambitious period for Marvel, as they have relaunched a number of titles, rebooted the Ultimate Universe, and introduced a number of exciting new characters – including a slate of twisted Avengers analogues that the Marvel Universe should hope don't find reason to come together and form a team.

Across titles including Captain America, Iron Man, The Immortal Thor, and Uncanny Avengers, Marvel has introduced, or reintroduced characters who correspond to some of the company's highest-profile heroes,...

Why Spider-Man & Wolverine Aren't on the Avengers' New All-Star Roster
Image
Wolverine and Spider-Man weren't included in the latest Avengers run because the creative team wanted to focus on iconic, big-name Avengers characters, who are most familiar to readers as members of the team. The current Avengers team represents "the most iconic characters [writer Jed McKay] can handle," while still, "ensuring that everyone gets the spotlight." Wolverine and Spider-Man would bring their own baggage to the Avengers, wgile their absence doesn't affect the balance of the series.

Wolverine and Spider-Man didn't make the cut for the latest Avengers run, in large part because the book's creative team sought to stack the latest roster with as many iconic, big-name Avengers characters as possible – and while Logan and Peter Parker are certainly iconi Marvel characters, they are more associated with the New Avengers roster, which is distinct from the classic Avengers line-up.

Speaking with Popverse, Avengers writer Jed McKay spoke about the process of...

"It Seemed Wildly Irresponsible": Avengers' New Base Fixes Their Most Senseless MCU Decision
Image
The Avengers have gained a new member, the Impossible City, which will also serve as their new home, in Earth's orbit. According to author Jed McKay, it is "wildly irresponsible" for Earth's Mightiest Heroes to operate within Earth's densely populated areas, like New York, due to the threats they attract. The Impossible City joining the Avengers is a smart and practical decision, providing a safe and tactically sound new base of operations for the tem.

The Avengers recently gained a new member and a new base of operations at the same time – as the team added the Impossible City, a sentient urban environment and interstellar vessel, which will orbit Earth and serve as their new home – in a move that highlights the one decision the MCU version of the team made that could have been thought through a little bit more.

All Marvel's Recent Reboots Follow One Baffling Trend - Is Kang to Blame?
Image
Recently, Marvel has been shaking up the status quos of several iconic franchises, but each revamp seemingly follows the same weirdly specific formula - is this an odd coincidence, or is Marvel setting up Kang the Conqueror as the force behind it all? Rather than attempting to continue the narrative with a new creative team, Marvel has been taking its franchises in new directions following unexplained time skips: first with The Amazing Spider-Man, then Fantastic Four, and most recently with Guardians of the Galaxy.

As the first series to get this reboot treatment, Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #1 by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr. opens with Spider-Man kneeling in a mysterious crater before immediately cutting to six months later, with his relationship with Mary Jane ruined and his reputation with the Avengers and Fantastic Four in shambles. Not Even Death Can Break Doctor Strange's Biggest Rule
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Strange #9Even after being killed and taking on a new role as Death's servant, Doctor Strange shows there are some lines he simply will not cross. The Sanctum Sanctorum recently saw a major shake-up as Doctor Strange, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, met an untimely demise. Strange's wife Clea quickly replaced him as Earth's mystical protector, while Stephen himself got a new role as the Harvestman, the Sorcerer Supreme of Death.

Moon Knight Works Best as a Vigilante, Not a Mystic (& Marvel Admits It)
Image
With Moon Knight's surge in popularity following his MCU debut as the plaything of a god, his roots as a street-level detective and vigilante are often overlooked. However, recently Marc Spector made a return to his origin as a protector of everyday people. After tons of Marvel events where he headlines as the residing mystic-themed character - even kicking around Thor and Doctor Strange - it was about time he returned to his original themes. Marvel's ongoing run of Moon Knight proves that he was always better as a street-level vigilante and should remain that way even during big crossover events.

Many of Moon Knight's biggest stories show him adopting a higher position of power, but this is a decision which generally sets him back as a character and stunts his growth. Now, though, Moon Knight is starting to grow into his own again and soon could achieve the levels...

Moon Knight's Haunted House Makes Doctor Strange's Sanctum Look Pathetic

Having recently joined Moon Knight's growing list of new allies, the sentient Midnight Mission plays a crucial role in Moon Knight's current war with New York's vampires.

As seen in previous issues of Moon Knight, Marc Spector found common ground with the House of Shadows, a living haunted house full of shifting rooms and labyrinths with the ability to break its victims' minds. However, it can also be a dark and punishing realm for Moon Knight's enemies.

Marvel Confirms Moon Knight Is Basically Unkillable
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Moon Knight #17

Marvel Comics just confirmed Moon Knight's greatest power in the best way. Having gone to war with an organization of vampires in New York known as the Structure, Moon Knight's fellow Fist of Khonshu named the Hunter's Moon was seemingly murdered by assassins hired by the vampires' leader known as the Tutor. However, this new issue confirms Fists of Khonshu are effectively unkillable as servants to the Egyptian moon god.

Previously in issues of Marvel's Moon Knight, Marc Spector was a rival to Dr. Badr, a far more faithful Fist of Khonshu who only allied himself with Marc after he learned of the original Fist's war against New York's vampires. After all, vampires were the cause of Badr being near death when he was chosen by Khonshu to be the Hunter's Moon. Serving the moon god with intense devotion, Badr's relationship with...

‘Alpha Flight: True North #1′ Review
Written by Jim Zub, Jed McKay, Ed Brisson | Art by Max Dunbar, Scott Hepburn, Djibril Morissette-Phan | Published by Marvel Comics

Fans of Alpha Flight have been pretty hard done by in recent years. Although the John Byrne written and drawn first 28 issues remain fan favourites to this day later efforts have seen somewhat diminishing returns, with the occasional bright spot. Alpha Flight characters and history became a mess, so convoluted every new attempt required rebooting and retconning, creating more mess. I think the final nail in the coffin for ‘Canada’s super team’ was when they became nothing more than second banana space warriors backing up Captain Marvel. So, what’s a publisher to do? How about give us some stories from the classic era, with all the creators being Canadian themselves. Yep, that works.

So, we get three stories from the classic era and featuring the characters we loved then and now.
