Travis Braun’s ‘Bad Boy’ tops The Black List of hottest unproduced Hollywood screenplays
Image
The Black List is the annual round-up of feature film screenplays that have yet to be produced.

Hollywood’s annual round-up of most popular screenplays yet to be produced has been topped by Travis Braun’s Bad Boy.

The Black List is compiled from the suggestions of more than 375 film executives, each contributing the names of up to 10 favourite feature film screenplays that were written in, or associated with, 2023, and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.

It was founded by Franklin Leonard in 2005.

This year, scripts had to receive at least seven nominations to be included.

Blacklist (2013)
The Black List’s 2023 List of Best Unproduced Screenplays
Blacklist (2013)
Rounding up the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives, The Black List has been a strong resource to clue one in on projects to potentially anticipate, but first, to kickstart Hollywood on bringing them to screen. Today we have this year’s edition, as voted on by more than 375 film executives.

Topping the 2023 edition is Travis Braun’s Bad Boy, which follows a rescue dog who suspects his loving new owner is a serial killer. Other scripts include The Great Pretender, a drama which imagines the kidnapping of Tom Hanks; the Super Bowl-set sniper drama The Nest; the Area 51 thriller 10/24/02; a Hans Christian Andersen meets Charles Dickens fantasy; plus films about Patsy Cline, Didier Drogba, Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan, Ftx’s downfall, and more.

See the list below via Deadline (and Pdf here), ranked from top to bottom by number of votes.

Black List 2023: Tom Hanks Kidnapping, Rescue Dog Who Suspects Owner is Serial Killer Top Annual Script Ranking
Image
At the close of a particularly fraught year for Hollywood screenwriters, Monday saw the release of the annual Black List – a ranking of the top unproduced scripts in show business.

Voted on by nearly 400 creative executives, this year’s favorite project that has yet to receive a greenlight is “Bad Boy” by Travis Braun, described simply as the tale of a rescue dog who suspects his loving new owner is a serial killer. C2 Motion Picture Group is financing the project and meeting with potential distribution partners imminently.

The list includes 76 titles and covers wide narrative ground. Kirill Baru and Eric Zimmerman’s “The Great Pretender” is the story of America’s sweetheart Tom Hanks getting kidnapped, and the doppelgänger who must step in to save him. Hunter Toro’s “Boy Falls From Sky” tells of an anxious playwright whose world is turned upside down by lies and bone-crushing accidents...

2023 Black List Includes Patsy Cline, Ftx and Tom Hanks Doppelganger Scripts
Image
The Black List has revealed its 2023 list of best unproduced screenplays, with scripts that include a biopic of country singer Patsy Cline, the rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried crypto empire Ftx, and an action-comedy about Tom Hanks and his doppelganger.

Topping this year’s list is a feature script from Travis Braun titled Bad Boy, with a logline that reads: “A rescue dog suspects his loving new owner is a serial killer.”

Elsewhere on the list is a screenplay about the Broadway playwright behind notorious disaster Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark from writer Hunter Toro, and a script focused on soccer star Didier Drogba from Jackson Kellard.

“This year, the industry was defined by a debate about the value of writers within it, and I think it’s inevitable that this year’s Black List means more than it has in the past,” said Black List founder and CEO Franklin Leonard.

“Buck Henry was hilarious and brilliant and made us laugh more times than we even know. I was lucky enough to be on a panel with him at SXSW and he was so funny. He said ‘I don’t like to write with people because if they aren’t as funny as me I hate them and if they are funnier than me I hate them,'” Judd Apatow said about the two-time Oscar nominee in a post to Instagram. “He wrote The Graduate and To Die For and co created Get Smart and was a riot hosting SNL back when they would let a writer host SNL. Criss Angel
Criss Angel is opening up about that scary stunt.

The 49-year-old magician spoke out on Monday after recovering from a scary incident at Friday night's Mindfreak Live! performance.

During the show, Angel lost consciousness while attempting an upside down straitjacket escape, after which he was promptly rushed to the hospital.

"This is real," Angel told ABC News of the incident. "I blur the line between reality and illusion but this demonstration and the risks that are at stake are no joke."

Fascinatingly, the magician returned to the stage one night after the accident to perform the same stunt that left him unconscious at the previous show.

Criss Angel is back to his old tricks.

Just one day after being hospitalized for losing consciousness during a daredevil upside-down straitjacket escape, the 49-year-old magician successfully completed the stunt again in front of the audience at his MindFreak Live! show in Las Vegas.

Angel's return won rave reviews from the audience in attendance.

"In hospital from last night's show, @CrissAngel played sold out show tonight & 10 minutes in, proves he is a bad mofo. Awesome return Criss!" wrote one audience member.

Another fan declared Angel to be "fully recovered and killing it!"

The stunt, which involves Angel having to escape from a straitjacket in less than 30 seconds while hoisted by his feet high above the ground, is typically a highlight of the show. However, on Friday night the magician lost consciousness before completing the Houdini-like trick.

Just a few minutes into Criss Angel’s Las Vegas show Mindfreak Live!, the famous illusionist reportedly became unconsciousness while performing his double-straitjacket act, according to guests at the show.

The 90-minute showcase came to an abrupt halt on Friday evening at the Luxor hotel, and Angel, 49, was rushed to the ER at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center, according to TMZ. He was discharged hours later.

“He did one of his trademark tricks in which he’s suspended from the ceiling and he has to escape a strait jacket. 'iSteve': 5 best moments from Funny or Die's Steve Jobs biopic
George Lucas
Funny or Die’s feature-length Steve Jobs biopic starring Justin Long has arrived. It’s long. It features at least one scene of virtual sex and two acid trips. It’s not fair to call iSteve (written and directed by Ryan Perez) a 78-minute sketch — it’s actually a movie, mostly. (“Cut entirely on iMovie,” the credits tell us.) Long’s Jobs himself speaks to us from a velvety-dark room. Is it heaven? What it is is a version of Jobs’ life from the peanut gallery: He’s a “renegade, a rebel, one of a kind, a bit of a loose cannon,...

Funny Or Die's Steve Jobs Biopic 'iSteve' Now Online
Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs (2015)
Move over "jOBS" and Aaron Sorkin's upcoming Steve Jobs movie, because Funny or Die is getting its Jobs biopic out first. The comedy website created its first feature film in just five days, and now it's releasing the Justin Long-starring movie, "iSteve," out online first.

"iSteve," which runs almost 80 minutes in length, debuted on Funny or Die on April 15. That's four days before "jOBS" initial release date, though it has since been postponed indefinitely. Don't expect "iSteve" to be the best movie of all time (it was written in just three days, after all), but it should be a hilarious take on the obsession to get a movie out on Jobs' life not long after the Apple co-founder's death. Watch the full film here.

If you don't have 80 minutes to dedicate to a maybe true, maybe exaggerated retelling of Jobs' life, watch the trailer above. Also keep in...

Watch Funny or Die's Full Steve Jobs Biopic Comedy iSTEVE
As promised, Funny or Die has released their full length Steve Jobs biopic comedy iSteve. The film stars Justin Long as Steve Jobs, James Urbaniak as Bill Gates, Michaela Watkins as Melinda Gates, and Jorge Garcia as Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple). This is actually the first Steve Jobs movie to be officially released. I think it ended up being pretty decent. It's definitely a low budget quality film, but there are some fun moments in it that I think you'll enjoy. George Lucas even shows up and introduces Jobs to midi-chlorians.

The project started out as a fake trailer and ended up becoming a full on parody film that was shot over five days. It was written and directed by Ryan Perez who previously explained,

In true Internet fashion, it’s not based on very thorough research — essentially a cursory look at the Steve Jobs Wikipedia page. It’s very silly.

Watch: Funny or Die's 'iSteve' Full Feature Film Starring Justin Long
You've seen the trailer, and now the full length feature film, the first of its kind from Funny or Die, has arrived. Justin Long stars in iSteve, the first feature film about legendary Apple founder Steve Jobs, beating both the Ashton Kutcher led Jobs (check out our video blog reaction from Sundance earlier this year) and Aaron Sorkin's gestating film to the public. Coming from Funny or Die, we're not sure what to expect in terms of cinematic quality, but after scrubbing through some of the film, it's definitely a comedic approach to Jobs' life and it looks like any other low budget indie film. Jorge Garcia, James Urbaniak, Paul Rust and Michaela Watkins also star in the film, and you can watch it online for free right now! "iSteve," a biopic satire starring Justin Long as Steve Jobs, was released by Funny or Die on Wednesday after being delayed two days due to the Boston Marathon bombings on Monday. Funny or Die's First Feature: iSteve, Shot in Five Days
Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs (2015)
Steve Jobs will be directed by Aaron Sorkin. Jobs stars Ashton Kutcher. But this year's third Steve Jobs bio-pic, Funny or Die's iSteve, has its own advantage: It's first. On April 15, audiences can watch the hour-plus feature on Funny or Die's website, while Sorkin continues to cast his lead role and Kutcher waits for a release date. In the rush to lead the pack, writer-director Ryan Perez, a UCLA grad and veteran of the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy theater, and who has been an in-house writer and director for Funny or Die since June 2008, had to cut corners. Perez wrote the script in 72 hours, bought four black turtlenecks and shot the entire feature-length film in five days, with research mostly pulled ...

Trailer for Funny or Die's Steve Jobs Biopic iSTEVE
Last month it was announced that Funny or Die had made their own Steve Jobs biopic called iSteve, which stars Justin Long as Jobs. They've released the first teaser trailer for the movie, and I like how it turned out.

The project started out as a fake trailer and ended up becoming a full on parody film that was shot over five days. Clocking in around 75 minutes, it's the longest film that Funny or Die has produced. The movie was written and directed by Ryan Perez who previously explained,

In true Internet fashion, it’s not based on very thorough research — essentially a cursory look at the Steve Jobs Wikipedia page. It’s very silly. But it looks at his whole life.

Trailer for iSteve, First Steve Jobs Biopic
There are currently two major Steve Jobs biopics in the works, including Ashton Kutcher "jObs" and Aaron Sorkin's untitled film. But now there's a third competitor, FunnyOrDie's "iSteve" comedy, which will be the first Jobs biopic to be released. Check out the trailer for new movie below. "It's not based on very thorough research. [It's] essentially a look at the Steve Jobs Wikipedia page," said Ryan Perez, who wrote and directed "iSteve." "It's very silly. Watch: Justin Long in Funny or Die's 'iSteve' Biopic Teaser Trailer
"Genius left unchecked can lead to ruin..." So they're actually turning this into a full-length feature film, or is everything just one big joke? Oh no, it's really real. A month ago, Funny or Die decided to actually make an entire (~60 to 75 minute) movie starring actor Justin Long as Apple founder Steve Jobs in a parodied biopic called iSteve. Now the site has launched the first teaser trailer and it doesn't feature much footage, but does give us a quick glimpse of Long in character as Jobs yelling about how "I am Apple!" So far so good, I just hope this turns out better than an overstretched "SNL" sketch, but we'll have to wait for more footage. Here's the first teaser trailer for Ryan Perez's iSteve, embedded from Funny or Die (found via SlashFilm): iSteve is Funny Or Die's Steve Jobs movie with Justin Long. It was originally...

'iSteve' aims to be '1st Steve Jobs biopic', says film maker
Steve Jobs
Washington, Mar 20: A new Steve Jobs film from Funny or Die starring Justin Long as Apple's iconic founder aims to be the 'first biopic' on the late visionary iPhone maker.

The director and writer Ryan Perez of 'iSteve' said that their 'goal was not to be the best, but the first Steve Jobs movie'.

Perez and his team wrote the script in three days and shot the film in five, ABC News reports.

It will be released on April 15 on Funnyordie.com.

Perez said 'iSteve' will cover most of Jobs' life, from his days working out of the garage in California to the development of the iPhone and Apple.

Funny or Die Has Made a Steve Jobs Movie Starring Justin Long!
A third Steve Jobs movie has been made, and it's coming from the funny folks over at Funny or Die. There's the Jobs movie that was recently made that stars Ashton Kutcher, Sony Pictures is developing one with Aaron Sorkin, and now we're going to get a comedic film inspired by the life of the legend.

The movie is called iSteve and it will star Justin Long as Jobs. As you know he's appeared in several Mac vs. PC commercials. The movie will clock in at 60 to 75 minutes, and it's the longest project to date for Funny or Die, which is generally known for its funny comedy sketches. The original plan was to make a fake trailer for a Steve Jobs movie, and they just ended up turning it into an actual full movie. Producer Allison Hord explains,

Funny Or Die Is Making A Steve Jobs Movie, Too
Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs (2015)
Funny Or Die is beating Aaron Sorkin and Ashton Kutcher to the punch with their own Steve Jobs biopic, according to The New York Times.

Entitled "iSteve," the 60-to-75 minute feature will tell the story of the late Apple founder's life with a comedic spin. The movie will be available on April 15.

The part of Jobs will be filled by actor Justin Long, whose own history with Apple goes back appearing in the famous "I'm a PC" commercials with John Hodgman.

Rounding out the cast will be James Urbaniak ("The Venture Brothers") as Bill Gates, Michaela Watkins ("SNL") as Melinda Gates and Jorge Garcia ("Lost") as Steve Wozniak.

Ryan Perez, one of Fod's staff writer/directors, will helm the project. He told the Times that the project came from the idea to make a parody of a Steve Jobs movie that then "escalated" to a nearly feature length film.

This is not a joke: Funny or Die made its own Steve Jobs biopic
Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
Watch out, Ashton Kutcher and Aaron Sorkin — the Steve Jobs biopic field is even more crowded than you thought.

Funny or Die revealed yesterday that it, too, has crafted a close-to-full-length film about Apple’s visionary, starring Justin Long. The actor is an appropriate lead for two reasons. First of all, he played the Mac in the computer company’s classic “I’m a Mac/I’m a PC” commercials. Secondly, the film’s run time is somewhere between 60 and 75 minutes, making it by far Funny or Die’s most lengthy project to date. You know… its Longest.

Votd: ‘Rugrats’ Goes Creepy and Red-Band With Mae Whitman, Michael Angarano and Alia Shawkat
Alia Shawkat
"Your childhood memories will be raped" by this creepy, twisted, but incredibly funny new Funny or Die video.  It's a live-action version of the popular 1990s Nickeoldeon cartoon Rugrats starring Michael Angarano as Tommy, Alia Shawkat as Chuckie and Mae Whitman as the evil, manipulative big-girl Angelica. In true Funny or Die fashion, the red-band trailer digs deep and exploits the sadistic subtexts of the show which were only visible to an older audience. Check it out. Here's the trailer for Rugrats from Funny or Die [1]. Rugrats [2] from Alia Shawkat [3] Have you recovered from that yet? I had to watch it twice just to make sure I was actually seeing what I was seeing. Kudos to writer director Ryan Perez for reuniting two of George Michael's loves from Arrested Development, first of all. Which kind of begs the question where Michael Cera was for this? Angarano is great though,...

Funny Or Die’s Dark And R-Rated Live-Action Rugrats Trailer
If, like me, Rugrats was one of your favourite childhood treasures, you should love this. Funny or Die, well-known for their joke/parody videos, a lot of which star some brilliant celebrities, have filmed a live-action trailer of the original Rugrats cartoon, starring Alia Shawkat as Chuckie Finster, Mae Whitman as an even more evil Angelica Pickles, Michael Angarano as Tommy Pickles, and Sarah Ramos as the twins Phil and Lil DeVille.

As can be expected from Funny or Die, it’s dark, it’s a lot of fun, and it’s R-rated, so if you’re currently at work, be sure to check back in later to watch it then (unless your boss is pretty laid-back).

It has everything a good trailer needs. Murder, deception, addiction, baby-vs.-baby violence. I’m a big Arrested Development fan, so just seeing Alia Shawkat and Mae Whitman back together is a win-win situation for me.

Red-Band Trailer For Live Action Rugrats Movie
It's been almost a decade since everyone's favorite bunch of toddlers were crawling around the animation studios at Nickelodeon. And longer still since we saw the Rugrats on the big-screen. Well, it seems like the long wait is finally over because Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil and Angelica are all coming back to theaters and this time in glorious live-action. Here's the red-band trailer for the Rugrats movie. Wait. What? Red-band trailer? I guess they have really grown up since their last adventure. Of course, there isn't a real Rugrats movie in production that would actually require a red-band trailer. Writer/director Ryan Perez has taken more than a few liberties in adapting the beloved children's cartoon from Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain, the biggest might be the desire to make it "the most disturbing film ever made." I don't think I'd go that far (Salò anyone?) but ...

"Inception," "The Social Network" Win Writers Guild Awards! Check Out Complete List of Winners and Nominees!
As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."

That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy

For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.
