Rachel Sennott is the funniest young woman working in Hollywood right now. (And I don't just say that out of Irish Catholic Connecticuter solidarity.) Sennott has the "sardonic Zillennial girl" market cornered, but she's just as capable of loud, ridiculous, hyperactive comedy as she is at Daria-esque, bitter observational snark. No matter what comedy set Sennott is performing, she's hilarious.
First breaking out as a stand-up and Twitter comedian, Sennott has used her fame to build an acting career, from web series to television to movies. Some of her more high-profile projects, such as the short-lived HBO series "The Idol" and the 2024 film "Saturday Night," use her only as a supporting player. But the most memorable films she's appeared in typically have her in a leading part; that's not a coincidence. I curse that the 2023 live script reading of...

40 years after the "Star Wars" parody "Spaceballs" entered our atmosphere, fans will be graced with what's been described as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film," also known as the currently untitled "Spaceballs 2." Creator Mel Brooks and star Bill Pullman have already been announced as returning to the franchise, but the real excitement is that Rick Moranis will be making his long-awaited return by reprising his role as Dark Helmet. Moranis was an unstoppable force in the 1980s and early 1990s, but famously chose to focus on raising his children after the untimely passing of his wife, Anne. While Moranis hadn't stopped acting completely (and he even put out a Grammy-nominated comedy album), he certainly wasn't performing with the same visibility as his heyday.
"Spaceballs 2" is undoubtedly the highest-profile project he's signed onto in decades, which has film fans ecstatic at the prospect of a "Moranissance,...

Christopher Nolan's 2023 biopic "Oppenheimer" was such a refreshing outlier in the world of blockbusters. Made for $100 million, the film unexpectedly made almost a billion dollars at the box office, startling everyone. This was rare, as Nolan's film was no crowd-pleasing action spectacular, but a biopic, and an incredibly downbeat and heady one at that. It dealt with the bleak morals of inventing a device that can destroy all life and the petty egos of the men who would rather bicker about security clearances than face those morals. Cillian Murphy won an Academy Award for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer, and the film won Best Picture. It was a hit largely because it came out the same day as Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," and many audiences rushed to make it an ironic double feature.
It was also likely a hit because the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer has fascinated people since the 1940s.

Goodrich, the new comedy starring Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis, has finally set a streaming date. Keaton's recent movies have seen the actor commit to comedy, returning in 2024 for Tim Burton's long-awaited Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. While the film divided fans, no one disagreed that Burton was hilarious as the undead trickster, Betelgeuse. Following that, Keaton starred in one of 2024's most underappreciated comedies of the year, and it will soon be available to stream at home.
Goodrich will stream exclusively on Max on January 31. The movie will then debut on HBO's linear channel the day after, on February 1. Directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, Goodrich received strong reviews when it was released in theaters last year. It holds an 81% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a slightly stronger 86% audience score. A few years before she was trying to land a girlfriend via a high school fight club with Ayo Edebiri in Bottoms, Rachel Sennott celebrated one of her breakthrough roles in a hysterically uncomfortable comedy about life, love, and especially death. Making her feature-length directorial debut, writer and helmer, Emma Seligman, delivered one of the best indie films of 2020 with Shiva Baby. Featuring ensemble performances from Molly Gordon (The Bear), Danny Deferrari (Oppenheimer), Dianna Agron (Glee), Jackie Hoffman (Only Murders in the Building), Sondra James (Dating and New York), Rita Gardner (P.S. I Love You), and Deborah Offner (Black Swan), the movie will feel painfully relatable for anyone whos ever felt lost in life with the pressures of those around you crushing your entire being. Next month, Netflix audiences can take part in the awkwardness, as Shiva Baby will join the streamers lineup on December 7.

Plot: After his younger second wife leaves him and enters a 90-day rehab program, Los Angeles art dealer Andy Goodrich seeks out his adult pregnant daughter Grace for help with raising his nine-year-old twins.
Review: I love Michael Keaton movies. In the 1980s and 1990s, Keaton was the ubiquitous leading man in everything from comedies and dramas to his game-changing turn in Tim Burton’s Batman. In the early 2000s, Keaton’s roles dried up a bit, aside from voice roles in the Cars and Toy Story franchises. After his awards-worthy role in 2014’s Birdman, Keaton had a resurgence with acclaimed films like The Founder, Spotlight, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to a very different comic book character in Spider-Man: Homecoming. After reprising his Batman role in last year’s The Flash and making his directorial debut with Knox Goes Away, he resurrected his iconic Beetlejuice this year...

Unexpected phone rings received in the middle of the night aren’t usually the bearer of good news. In “Home Again” writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s middling LA-based dramedy “Goodrich,” the title character (played by Michael Keaton) learns it the hard way. A call from his wife wakes Andy Goodrich up in the wee hours, informing this shocked, aloof husband (who hasn’t even noticed that she wasn’t home) that she’s checked into a Malibu rehab for 90 days to address her addiction problem, leaving Andy to care for their 9-year-old twins. Also, she tells him she’ll be leaving him as soon as she’s out.

These days, every time I see a relatable, character-driven comedy about actual human beings I think, “Wow they sure don’t make ’em like this anymore.” It is like a shock to the system that someone managed to get one made and released. It makes me sad since this was once a popular genre with with major studios regularly filled theaters. Now at best it is left to streamers, or an occasional example that somehow sneaks onto a studio release schedule, or, in the case of writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s exceptionally smart and endearing Goodrich, it is being delivered to theaters by an independent (in this case Ketchup Entertainment) and sporting an endless list of “executive producers” (I counted 24 with that title) who put up enough money to get a deserving film on the screen against all odds.

The opening scene of Goodrich is as abrupt for us as for its protagonist. Michael Keaton's Andy Goodrich is startled awake by a late-night phone call from his wife, Naomi (Laura Benanti). Warning him not to freak out, she tells him she's checked herself into a 90-day rehab program. His first instinct is to assume she's joking he not only hadn't noticed his wife didn't come home that night, but was completely unaware she was struggling with prescription pills. Suddenly, Naomi's the one blowing up, and she informs Andy that she's also leaving him.

When Andy Goodrich’s wife, Naomi (Laura Benanti), tells him that she’s checked herself into rehab and plans to leave him, few people are surprised. Everyone knew the mother of his two elementary school-aged children reached for pills at night to lull her to sleep and indulged in extra glasses of wine.
That the news nevertheless shocks Andy, played with an endearing clumsiness by Michael Keaton, speaks more to his own distracted state. The gallerist has never been a present partner or parent, as evidenced by his relationship to his eldest daughter (Mila Kunis) with his first wife (Andie MacDowell). Now that his current union is on the brink of ruin, Andy feels pressure to change.
Goodrich, Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s second feature, observes Andy as he tries to be a better father. The narrative coasts on the familiar beats of this premise, offering only a handful of novel moments along the way.

Goodrich features Michael Keaton in a modern fatherhood role. Keaton & Mila Kunis star in a dramedy touching on father-daughter dynamics. Goodrich promises an emotionally nuanced exploration of familial bonds.
When most people think about Michael Keaton's career, it is likely that two roles spring to mind: his time as the brooding Caped Crusader or his outrageous portrayal of Betelgeuse. The latter is particularly true with the upcoming release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which sees him collaborating with Tim Burton once again. However, Keaton has become a beloved actor and persona for his well-rounded repertoire, and his work outside his iconic characterizations has endeared many to the actor the same. From Mr. Mom to Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Keaton has impressed in these roles that combine drama and comedy.

After getting to see Michael Keaton reprise his role as Beetlejuice later this year, the Oscar nominee will be shifting to something much harder than trying to come back from the afterlife: parenthood.

The first trailer for the upcoming film “Goodrich” gives viewers a glimpse at the story of a father reconnecting with his adult daughter. Starring Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis, “Goodrich” centers on Andy Goodrich, played by Keaton, whose life is upended when his wife enters rehab, leaving him to care for their young twins alone. Overwhelmed, Andy turns to his daughter Grace, played by Kunis, for help despite their strained past relationship.
The trailer highlights the age difference between Andy and Grace. “I am 27 years older than you, which is basically unheard of for siblings… except maybe in LA,” Kunis’s character Grace jokes to Andy’s twin children. This line sets the tone for a story that blends humor with emotional depth in exploring family dynamics. Michael Keaton’s renaissance after movies like Birdman and Spotlight has given the actor the opportunity to revisit his most beloved roles. He would don the cape and cowl once again as Batman for the infamous The Flash and the unreleased Batgirl. This fall, he’ll be returning as the unhinged ghost with the most as Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which reunites him with Tim Burton. And while this isn’t exactly Mr. Mom 2, Keaton once again takes on parenting duties single-handedly in the new trailer for Goodrich from Ketchup Entertainment.
Goodrich stars Keaton along with Mila Kunis, Carmen Ejogo, Michael Urie, Kevin Pollak, Viven Lyra Blair, Nico Haraga, Danny Deferrari with Lauren Benanti and his former Multiplicity co-star, Andie MacDowell.
The official synopsis reads,

Oppenheimer's Iq of 135 places him in the 99th percentile of intelligence, while Einstein's estimated Iq is 160, in the genius category. The Iq test oversimplifies intelligence, missing out on factors like creativity and emotional intelligence pivotal for Oppenheimer and Einstein. Nolan's movie, Oppenheimer, highlights the complexities of genius, emphasizing that brilliance cannot be boiled down to a single metric.
Oppenheimer depicts the titular scientist as the smartest of his peers, but his Iq might say otherwise. Christopher Nolans movie brought the spotlight back to J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who directed the Manhattan Project and is hailed as the "father of the atomic bomb." Oppenheimer was a polymath, fluent in multiple languages and versed in classical literature and quantum physics. While the movie expertly delves into the complexities of Oppenheimers genius, leadership, and personal struggles, it also reignited a long-standing debate: Was Oppenheimer the smartest scientist of his era, or...

Are Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott the Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro of queer indie cinema? That remains to be seen, but their second feature "Bottoms" definitely has the potential to be the sleeper hit of August. "Bottoms" is about Pj (Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), two lesbian high school seniors desperate to get laid before college. So, they start a women's self-defense club, hoping to hook up with the cheerleaders who join.
Distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film employed a staggered rollout. It opened in just 10 locations across the U.S. on August 25, 2023, taking in $516 thousand, enjoying a boost from great buzz (read /Film's review here) and discounted $4 tickets on August 27, aka National Cinema Day.
A week later, it opened wide across 715 theaters, and its momentum hasn't dissipated. Though "The Equalizer 3" was the box office king of Labor Day Weekend, "Bottoms" looks to make a healthy gross too...

Emma Seligman's teen comedy Bottoms is already making waves, as it was released to widespread critical acclaim. It's applauded for both its direction and its screenplay, as well as the performances of stars Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott, who shone in Bodies Bodies Bodies and co-wrote the script for the new film as well. Not only that, but it had the highest per-screen average for a limited opening since Everything, Everywhere All at Once, which bodes well for the success of the indie flick.
However, though it may be her most widely discussed and successful film, Bottoms isn't Emma Seligman's directorial debut. That honor goes instead to Shiva Baby, a 2020 comedy that also starred Rachel Sennott in the central role. It's the perfect introduction to Seligman's artistic vision and should be watched before Bottoms.

We kicked off August discussing the ins and outs of the photography industry in the American giallo Eyes of Laura Mars before getting serious with a discussion on the afterlife and religion in queer director Alejandro Amenábar‘s The Others. Now we’re somewhere in between drama and comedy with writer/director Emma Seligman‘s raucous comedy slash anxiety-driven Jewish horror film, Shiva Baby.
In the film, Rachel Sennott stars as Danielle, a young woman who is secretly doing sex work on the side of her College degree. As the film opens, Danielle is meeting with her married lover Max (Danny Deferrari) before heading to a Shiva, a week of Jewish mourning, where she meets her parents Debbie (Polly Draper) and Joel (Fred Melamed).
Danielle’s lies about her financial status and career plans quickly begin to surface when Max arrives with his wife Kim (Dianna Agron) and baby in tow.

“Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds” is the famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita that physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer spoke upon witnessing the first denotation of a nuclear device, as the world entered the new era of nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s epic drama about Oppenheimer, his work on the Manhattan Project, and his treatment after the war. The biographical drama starts like a historical thriller and ends like a profound warning to the world, all set against the sweep of history that changed the world.

Christopher Nolan kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas, taking the stage to talk about his thriller Oppenheimer, which releases in July. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the atomic bomb.
“I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Nolan said. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas. … The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”

HBO is developing a comedy set in the world of a sugar baby – where an older person dates a younger person with the promise of money and gifts.
Sugar comes from Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman and Adam McKay and his Hyperobject Industries production company.
The half-hour project follows a young woman in New York who balances her neurotic Jewish family with her life as a college sugar baby.
It is timely given the news about a certain Congressman from a certain southern state.
Seligman will write and direct the pilot and will exec produce alongside McKay and Hyperobject Industries’ Betsy Koch. Shiva Baby producers Lizzie Shapiro, Kieran Altman, and Katie Schiller will co-produce.
Seligman is behind Shiva Baby, which was a SXSW short film that she adapted into a feature film starring Rachel Sennott, Polly Draper, Dianna Agron, Molly Gordon, Fred Melamed and Danny Deferrari. The film was released by Utopia on April.

In this epic episode, we really get to know the talented actor Danny Deferrari, who plays Max in Emma Seligman’s brilliant and hilarious new film Shiva Baby, and I’m eternally grateful for it. He talks about appreciating the “emotional language” that Seligman speaks and the heavy life situation that was weighing on him during that movie. He takes us through his early training as an actor, his formative and important seasons at the Williamstown Theater Festival, and the trials and tribulations that brought him to his “Holy Trinity of Artistic Safety.” I break down how a small performance of his […]

From its double-entendre title to the hilarious sightgag of a closing scene, Emma Seligman’s debut feature, Shiva Baby, is universal in its uncomfortable awkwardness and specific in how it chooses to bathe in it. Adapted and expanded from her NYU thesis short, Seligman’s film follows Danielle (Rachel Sennott), a young Jewish New Yorker who has taken to sex work to solidify her funds. After concluding a session with a client, Max (Danny Deferrari), Danielle heads to Flatbush to meet up with her parents (Polly Draper and Fred Melamed) and attend the shiva of a family friend. Faced with unending nagging […]
