Cool Trailer for Trost's 'The Waves of Madness' Side-Scrolling Movie
Image
"If you get this message - don't send help!" Umbrella Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an indie action horror film titled The Waves of Madness, from filmmaker Jason Trost. This trailer originally debuted a few months ago, but we're just catching up with it now (thanks to a tip from Live for Film). It's described as the first side-scrolling film ever, using the old video game side-scroller style to tell this B&w story. A special agent is dispatched to investigate a distress call from a round-the-world cruise, only to find the ship eerily abandoned and haunted by a malevolent force that twists sanity into terror. Starring Jason Trost, Tallay Wickham, Ryan Gibson. The indie film was made "for just $20,000 in a single studio apartment with a crew of three... Trost also [did] the entire post-production himself in Final Cut Pro, using practical effects, in-camera trickery, and hand-built digital matte backgrounds to evoke a dreamlike,...

‘The Waves of Madness’ – The World’s First Side-Scrolling Horror Film is Now Available on Digital
Image
Classic horror influences and retro gaming aesthetics combine in The Waves of Madness, the first side-scrolling horror movie from multihyphenate actor, writer, and director Jason Trost.

The Waves of Madness is now available to rent or own on Digital.

It follows “a special agent dispatched to investigate a distress call from a round-the-world cruise. Upon arrival, the agent finds the ship eerily abandoned and haunted by a malevolent force that distorts reality and warps sanity into terror.”

In other words, this side-scroller combines 1930s Lovecraftian horror with retro video game style.

Trost stars alongside Ryan Gibson and Tallay Wickham.

Shot for just $20,000 in a single studio apartment with a crew of three, The Waves of Madness is a testament to DIY indie filmmaking. Trost also completed the entire post-production himself in Final Cut Pro, using practical effects, in-camera trickery, and hand-built digital matte backgrounds to evoke a dreamlike, side-on horror world.

Fantastic Fest 2018 Review: FP2: Beats Of Rage Is One For The Fans
FP2: Beats of Rage is the kind of sequel that seems both impossible and inevitable at the same time. 2012's The Fp presented such a unique, idiosyncratic vision of a dystopian future in which the course of human existence was determined by video game combat in the form of "Beat Offs", duels on a Dance Dance Revolution styled arcade game renamed Beat Beat Revelation.  The film was so odd, the tone so unique, and the humor so specifically calibrated that you either love or hate the film, and initial reactions were very split. Writer/director/star Jason Trost managed to round up a team and run a couple of successful crowdfunding campaigns to get FP2 off the result is a film that is both more ambitious than...

Ten Best: Phil’s Top 10 Movies of 2014
Well it’s that time of year again – the one where websites across the globe churn out Top 10 list after top ten list. So why should we be any different?! Yet whilst we may be following the predictable end of year lists, I can guarantee that my list is anything but predictable, featuring films from across the globe: including the Us, Canada, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and even good old Blighty!

This year more than ever there has been film after film that knocked it out of the park for me – which is why my Top 10 list has Two sections: the Top 10 and then the pick of 35(!) more brilliant movies (I would have loved this list to be a Top 45, honestly). So what’s my criteria? Well it has to be a movie I’ve seen this year, one that was released this year, i.e. making its UK debut,...

MonsterFest 2014: ‘How To Save Us’ Review
Stars: Jason Trost, Kate Avery, Ryan Gibson, Coy Jandreau, Tallay Wickham, Michael Gupta | Written and Directed by Jason Trost

There are very few film makers working today who have the same filmic sensibilities as me, whose work resonates with me the most – be it because I can see influences in their work that inspired me or be it that they’re just as demented as me (and I mean that in a good way). In fact I can count them on one hand: The Astron-6 guys, Dustin Mills, Kaare Andrews, Pearry Teo and Jason Trost. These are the film makers whose work I will watch no matter what the subject matter, no matter the budget and no matter what the opinion on a particular film is…

It’s interesting to note that all those mentioned are relative newcomers to movie-making. In fact it has only been three years since I...

‘Hatchet 3′ DVD Review
Stars: Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Zach Galligan, Caroline Williams, Parry Shen, Derek Mears, Rileah Vanderbilt, Sean Whalen, Jason Trost | Written by Adam Green | Directed by Bj McDonnell

The final film in the trilogy, Hatchet 3 loses the series’ director, Adam Green, replacing him with Bj McDonnell, who has previously carved out a career as cam/steadicam operator on a ton of movies – including one of my all-time favourite flicks, How to Rob a Bank. However all is not lost as Green is still on board as the films guiding light and scriptwriter for this tale which picks up immediately where the second film left off.

In Hatchet 3 our heroine Marybeth (Harris) has finally “killed” Victor Crowley (Hodder) – or so she thinks. When she shows up at the police station covered in blood the sheriff (Galligan) doesn’t believe her story and locks her up while he sends a search and recovery...

Exclusive Interview: Sean Whalen
This month, knowing that The People Under the Stairs was getting such a wonderful treatment and release from Arrow Video, I spoke with Sean Whalen, the actor who plays “Roach” in the film. We talked about the movie, his experiences and his life after Roach…

To begin, I suppose it’s easier to start at the beginning, how did you get into acting and what was your first role?

I got into acting because I was the youngest of four and didn’t want to help clean up after dinner. If I could entertain my brothers and sisters while they did all the work, they wouldn’t even realize I hadn’t lend a hand. Finally, they got wise and the gig was up, so I performed elsewhere. My first substantial role was directing and starring in my fifth grade production of Rumpelstiltskin.

“The People under the Stairs” came early...

Watch the First Seven Minutes of Jason Trost's "Wet and Reckless" (& Then the Rest of the Movie Too)
Jason Trost is one of my favorite indie filmmakers out there. There's no reason not to like the guy. His movies are ridiculous, mostly badass meditations on male masculinity (and superheroes). When I interviewed the guy, he was honest, open. and just plain cool.

Well, his latest flick, Wet and Reckless, is now available online via Vimeo. To see what the latest film from the director of The Fp and All Superheroes Must Die has to offer, check out the trailer, and the first seven minutes of the flick.

Exclusive Q&A: Director Jason Trost Talks Superheroes, Hatchet 3 and Eyepatches!
I was lucky enough to get in touch with Jason Trost, who you can see in This Is The End, playing a cannibalistic survivor of the apocalypse. The second he popped up on-screen, I may or may not have said “I just interviewed that dude!” to my group of unimpressed friends who are never impressed by anyone I’ve interviewed. Not even Tommy Wiseau.

Anyways, if you haven’t seen this dude’s work, you’re missing out. The Fp is nothing short of brilliant and All Superheroes Must Die has become one of my favorite superhero films ever made. It’s a testament to the dude’s ability both in front of and behind the camera that the work he’s generated has been thoroughly enjoyable.

La Planète sauvage (1973)
Australia's Biggest Genre Film Fests Merge, Become Megatron of Festivals
La Planète sauvage (1973)
Australia has two major genre film festivals of note: A Night of Horror, dedicated to horror flicks (duh); and Fantastic Planet, the sci-fi/superheroes/fantasy domain. This year, both festivals have "joined forces" to form a mega-fest the likes of which Australia has never seen. (Or maybe they have. I've never been to Australia.) The festivals are not merging into one; they are simply running in tandem so you can get all your weird cinema in one, concentrated heap.

Fantastic Planet will be debuting their Launch Pad program at this year's fest. Developed to "provide a solid starting point for genre feature films just commencing their festival run," three films have been chosen for the inaugural run: A Dark Matter, directed by James Naylor (Twisting cerebral sci-fi thriller);

The Taking, directed by The BAPartists (Deep and disturbing art-house horror); and Wet and Reckless, directed by Jason Trost (Hilarious buddy caper-cum reality TV parody).

In addition,...

‘All Superheroes Must Die’ Review
Stars: Jason Trost, Lucas Till, James Remar, Sophie Merkley, Lee Valmassy, Sean Whalen, Nick Principe, Brian Taylor | Written and Directed by Jason Trost

It has been well establish that superhero films have basically become their own genre. Their popularity and sheer volume has placed them into their own unique category. We are also beginning to see subcategories emerge within superhero films that twist and turn the typical format we have come to expect. The film All Superheroes Must Die is one of the newest examples of this phenomenon. It takes the archetypal heroes we recognize and places them into dark and perverse world we would normally associate with a horror film. That juxtaposition of genre is clever premise which could provide a much needed boost to a genre that can easily become stale. Regrettably the final product does not live up to the promise of that potential. Being a small...

Review: The Fp
The Fp

Stars: Jason Trost, Lee Valmassy, Art Hsu, Caitlyn Folley, Nick Principe, Brandon Barrera, James DeBello, Sean Whalen, James Remar | Written by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost | Directed by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost

It seems everyone and their uncle is trying to make instant cult movies these days. Whether they be grindhouse-inspired genre flicks or retro movies that throwback to the heyday of VHS, it seems “cult” is the new cool. However trying to make a cult film and succeeding at making a cult film are two very different things…

Thankfully The Fp falls into the later category, with what can only be described as a mash-up of Escape From New York and Step Up!

Set in a dystopian future, where a relentless turf war rages. The Fp sees two rival gangs feud for control of the rural wasteland Frazier Park (the Fp of the title) in the deadly arena...

"Superheroes" Rocks Its Tiny Budget
If you look at my bio here at Jpp, you'll notice that it says I’m a bit a Watchmen fanatic. Watchmen has colored my appreciation of the superhero genre forever. I can't stomach reading weekly/monthly DC or Marvel hero entries any more. I want my heroes darker, edgier, slightly more "real." I pretty much worship The Comedian, after all. It's that dark edge that keeps me coming back to my favorite comics and makes me seek out newer stuff like Fly, Deathmatch and Before Watchmen. Also known as Vs., All Superheroes Must Die stars Jason Trost as Charge. When he awakens on a lonely street in the middle of what appears to be a small town, he discovers that he's trapped in a game of survival alongside fellow heroes CutThroat (Lucas Till), Shadow (Sophie Merkley) and The Wall (Lee Valmassey) against Rickshaw (James Remar).

All Superheroes Must Die : Damsel Here
What makes a superhero super? Is it their moral character, or their fantastic powers that allow them to vanquish all villains? What if their powers were lost and the very reason for their existence was suddenly drained from them? All Superheroes Must Die is now out on Blu-ray and DVD, from Image Entertainment, and in honor of the release, Wamg decided to take a look at the other side of superheroes… the not so damsel in distress.

While there are plenty of innocent hostages, Sophie Merkley as Shadow isn’t one of them. Merkley joins the impressive company of strong women that includes Scarlett Johansson (Marvel’s The Avengers), Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Sigourney Weaver (Alien). Check them out below.

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow : Marvel’s The Avengers

The only female in the Avengers Initiative, Natasha Romanoff (a.k.a Black Widow) has earned...

DVD Autopsy: All Superheroes Must Die
(Movies fail at the box office, and many more fail to even find release into theaters. When one of these dead on arrival titles arrives on disc they go under the knife of the forensic video-examiner, all in the hope of determining the causes of death in the marketplace. Be forewarned any who wish to see the film – this piece is entirely a Spoiler.) This film, originally titled “Vs”, came to light in the fall of 2011, at the Toronto After Dark Festival. It fought for attention, battled indifference, and ultimately in its quest to vanquish good taste it triumphed over apathy and found distribution into the home market. The film is conceived entirely by filmmaker Jason Trost, who previously rose with a cult hit “The Fp”, which was set in a dystopian future and pitted rival clans competing in a Dance-Dance-Revolution battle for control of a region -- to...

All Superheroes Must Die (2013) Review
All Superheroes Must Die feels rushed from the jump. Its as if Jason Trost who writes directs and fronts the picture grabbed a seat jotted down a draft of a film and said Im ready to go about four drafts before such was the actual case. The shakeups in logical thought are staggering. Were talking about mistakes that a child wouldnt make let alone a full grown man or woman who have opted to pursue vigilante justice. Trost may be a reliable guy in front of the camera but hes not yet prepared to deliver the goods behind it.
