The South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (SXSW) has announced the Audience Award winners, and Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant 2 has taken home the award for the Headliners section.
“Our deepest thanks to the filmmakers, audiences, and volunteers who made this year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival exceptional,” said Claudette Godfrey, VP Film & TV. “We assembled another stellar program that puts independently made narratives, documentaries, TV series, and Xr experiences on the same stage as studio films and TV shows. The magic of shared viewing experiences and a sense of community continued to define our festival, and we’re excited for all of this year’s projects to reach even wider audiences beyond SXSW!“

There has been a sequel in development for Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant since the original film’s release and moderate success. In the nine years since the first film’s release, no one has exactly been clamoring for The Accountant 2, but this sequel is charming enough to win over audiences looking for an entertaining B-action picture with an A-list scale.
The Accountant 2 Review
The Accountant 2 sees Ben Affleck’s money launderer and assassin called out of his peaceful retirement when he has to investigate the death of a close friend and how it might connect to a missing person’s case and a human trafficking ring. Bill Dubuque’s script feels generic in such a way that it almost feels as if it could have been a spec script that retroactively had the characters from the first film added to it.

Nine years later, The Accountant is back, and this time, the stakes weren’t just on screen. The sequel’s director had a massive challenge – bringing J.K. Simmons into the mix in a way that mattered. It wasn’t just about adding a big name; it was about making his role feel personal.

Ben Affleck is back in the spotlight and soon on cinema screens, thanks to the South by Southwest premiere of the keenly awaited sequel The Accountant 2, set to grace theaters via Amazon MGM Studios.
Off-screen, the multihyphenate filmmaker resurfaces amid a plethora of self-contradictory rumors surrounding his romance with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, fresh off his split from Jennifer Lopez, a juncture keeping tabloids busy. On-screen, Affleck’s career shifts with this follow-up to the beloved 2016 actioner. While it has a large set of devotees, the original Accountant didn’t exactly meet expectations, something the sequel seems to have circumvented.
Co-starring Jon Bernthal, The Accountant 2’s first screenings have incited quite a stir among general audiences, especially for a film featuring Affleck as a lead. On Rotten Tomatoes, it sits at a certified “fresh” 86%, with 22 critics having taken a swing at it.

Sometimes life hands you a case of the blues that can only be cured by watching Ben Affleck line dance while doing his best to convey autism with his facial expressions. When those days come, “The Accountant 2” is the movie for you.
I’m not sure who was clamoring for a sequel to Gavin O’Connor’s 2016 film, which starred Affleck as Christian Wolff, an accountant on the autism spectrum who un-cooks books for criminal organizations while doubling as an action hero with perfect marksmanship and brutal hand-to-hand combat skills. It’s the rare movie that deserves criticism for not focusing enough on the intricacies of accounting, as the idea of Cartels turning to freelancers to solve their financial problems was a lot more interesting than the knockoff Jason Bourne that Christian was eventually turned into. But it told a complete story (some would say “and then some”), leaving most...

Nearly a decade after Ben Affleck introduced the world to Christian Wolff in 2016’s “The Accountant,” a sequel is born. Gavin O’Connor’s “The Accountant 2” continues a trend of long-awaited sequels picking at the carcasses of existing properties for any possible franchise potential.
Bill Dubuque’s screenplay is a trope-regurgitating mess — unremarkable, jump-around nonsense — but somehow stumbles into an entertaining brand of B-grade action silliness. The tone evolves from deadly serious to deadly kinda-sorta serious, alleviating a few of the original’s pain points. Don’t expect anything groundbreaking, just an entertaining take on neurodivergent mercenaries and brotherly love.
Affleck reprises his role as autistic badass Christian Wolff, aka “The Accountant,” whose books aren’t exactly clean. Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) reluctantly contacts Christian after someone close to both takes a fatal bullet. They join forces with a shared taste for justice, but deciphering the tangled web of available clues requires help.

In The Accountant, Christian Wolff, the autistic tax professional played by Ben Affleck, lamented not spending more time in his airstream trailer. At the time, Christian housed the sleek vehicle, retrofitted with a glossy wood interior, in a warehouse, which he only occasionally visited to monitor his cash reserve and admire his art collection. The events of The Accountant resulted in Christian getting his wish. After taking down a conniving businessman and reuniting with his brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal), the reclusive Cpa absconds from Illinois and sets out on the open road.
When we reunite with Christian in The Accountant 2, he’s living in Idaho and searching for love. An early sequence establishes the tone of Gavin O’Connor’s highly-anticipated sequel: We see Christian self-consciously trying on different suits for a speed dating event before a blunt cut (editing by Richard Pearson) brings us to a conference room, where...

Ben Affleck punches, kicks and shoots his way out of an array of dangerous situations over the two-hour-plus runtime of The Accountant 2, but at the Saturday night SXSW premiere of the movie Affleck revealed the film’s most difficult stunt: Choreography.
“For me, the challenge, of course, was the months and months I spent training to line dance,” jokes Affleck from the stage of Austin’s Paramount theater. Affleck was referencing a mid-film scene where his accountant/killer Christian Wolff adroitly line dances in a Los Angeles dive bar after picking up the dance moves in second (as established in the first film, Wolff has acute savant syndrome). “Tom Cruise has nothing on me,” Affleck added. “Just in terms of line dancing!”

Plot: After his friend is killed while trying to track down a missing woman, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) attempts to solve the murder. When the trail leads to the dangerous world of human trafficking, he’s forced to contact his deadly, estranged brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal) for help.
Review: It’s taken nine whole years, but here we are with a long-awaited sequel to The Accountant. For my money, the first film ranks as Ben Affleck’s best-action vehicle. While his superhero roles and other stabs at franchises, such as his turn as Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears, never panned out, The Accountant was a different story. The role of Christian Wolff seemed tailor-made for him. In the first movie, Wolff, who worked as a forensic accountant for the mob, was revealed to be something of a do-gooder, using the information he learned from jobs to help...

Let me say right up top that I quite like 2016's "The Accountant." It might have been a here-today, gone-tomorrow action flick for a fair number of viewers, but I have an odd, personal connection to it because it was the very last movie I saw in theaters before leaving my home state of Arizona for a new life in Austin, Texas. I say all of this to make a point that I care about the original movie more than the average enjoyer of action cinema. So, believe me when I tell you that the long-awaited "The Accountant 2" delivers the goods.
Director Gavin O'Connor has reunited with Ben Affleck, who once again headlines the sequel as the mysterious Christian Wolff, an autistic man who happens to also be an assassin with a code. O'Connor and Affleck, despite first tackling the concept nearly a decade ago, didn't skip a beat with this reunion.

In 1984, “The Terminator” became one of the pop-culture touchstones of its decade, though it’s almost hard to remember that when Arnold Schwarzenegger was first tapped to portray that glowering cybernetic killer, the casting was a knowing joke, one that played off Arnold’s borderline kitsch lunkishness as an actor.
Ben Affleck is a far better actor than Schwarzenegger, but nine years ago, when Affleck was cast as the title character in “The Accountant,” the role carried some of that same frisson of meta japery. Affleck, as winning as he can be, has often had a blockish, overly square, slightly inexpressive quality. And it’s precisely that aspect of his personality that makes him so perfect as Christian Wolff, an autistic savant who works as an accountant for mobsters and terrorists, using his surreal numbers acumen to clean up their fraudulent books. He is also, not so incidentally, an efficient action bruiser.

Although sequels rarely surpass the original, Gavin O’Connor’s long-gestating The Accountant 2 is a pleasant surprise.
Nearly a decade after The Accountant (2016), Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is brought out of hiding after his former federal contact Raymond King (J.K. Simmons) is killed while on a case. King’s successor Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) enlists his expertise in putting together the puzzle, for which Christian reconnects with his long-lost hitman brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal).
While I admit I wouldn’t call myself the target audience, the original fell flat for me. I actually found myself questioning why a sequel was necessary, but fortunately, the follow-up stands perfectly on its own while delving further into the dynamics that felt halfheartedly introduced the first time around.
And although Anna Kendrick’s absence as accountant Dana Cummings from the original is an unfortunate omission — albeit understandable given her busy year that includes another...

Jon Bernthal will be returning as The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again, but Marvel Studios may already have bigger plans for the character. While speaking with ComicBook.com (in an interview which has since been deleted), Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum said, “[Bernthal] is working on a special presentation with us about that character.“
Rumours last month suggested that Marvel was developing a new Punisher TV series; perhaps this is that project.
So far, Marvel has only released two Special Presentations on Disney+: Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Both were released in 2022, and while it was assumed that these would be regular features alongside the movies and TV series, that’s all we’ve got. To be fair, Marvel has been cutting back on their projects in recent years in an attempt to get the franchise back on track with proven winners.

Earlier this week, the internet was abuzz with excitement as we got our first proper look at the return of Ben Affleck's autistic hitman Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2. We've run the numbers and we think it adds up to an inbound banger from O'Connor and writer Bill Dubuque, but check out the trailer for yourself below and see what you think;

It's been almost a decade since The Accountant first introduced the world to Ben Affleck's autistic hitman Christian Wolff. A modest success when it came out in 2016, Gavin O'Connor's financial thriller has enjoyed a renaissance on streaming in the years since its release, with the exploits of the calculated, calculating killer winning the movie a loyal fanbase — and a full-blown sequel. Yes, 2025 is set to see The Accountant 2 hit our screens, with O'Connor back in the director's chair, Bill Dubuque once again handling the script, and Affleck returning alongside on-screen brother Brax (Jon Bernthal), U.S. Treasury investigator Ray King (J.K. Simmons), and Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). For a first look at the gang back in action, check out the new photos from the film that Amazon released earlier today:

Ahead of SXSW next month, Amazon MGM Studios have released the official trailer for The Accountant 2, offering a first look at the return of 2x Academy Award-winner and former Batman actor Ben Affleck (Justice League; Argo; The Town) as the titular accountant and the Punisher himself Jon Bernthal (The Punisher; Daredevil: Born Again; The Wolf of Wall Street) as his equally lethal brother.
The film's synopsis reads, "Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) has a talent for solving complex problems. When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to “find the accountant,” Wolff is compelled to solve the case. Realizing more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff recruits his estranged and highly lethal brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal), to help. In partnership with U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), they uncover a deadly conspiracy, becoming targets of a ruthless network of killers who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.

In the official trailer for Gavin O’Connor and Bill Dubuque’s The Accountant 2, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) turns to a smart speaker to break down the difference between dressy casual and business casual. It helps him decide not to wear the black suit the system tells him makes him look like a mortician. But when the stakes get a bit higher after someone he once knew gets murdered, Christian can’t turn to Siri or Alexa. Instead, he goes to his killing machine brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal).

Ben Affleck is back to his extremely particular ways in the action-packed first trailer for “The Accountant 2.” The sequel finds Affleck reprising the role of an autistic numbers whiz, this time teaming up with his brother (played by Jon Bernthal) to investigate the murder of his friend — J.K. Simmons returning for a brief stint.
The same filmmaking team that made the 2016 film a hit is back for the sequel: Gavin O’Connor directs from a screenplay by Bill Dubuque, although Anna Kendrick is nowhere to be seen in this first trailer. Instead, Affleck’s character is working alongside a federal agent played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson.
The first film was made by Warner Bros. and grossed $155 million against a $44 million budget, but grew in stature over the years. Affleck said he was spurred to make a sequel given how many people would come up to him and want to ask about “The Accountant.

The estranged brotherly duo of Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal is back for “The Accountant 2.”
Ahead of the film’s worldwide premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Film & Television Festival on March 8, “The Accountant 2” has released an official trailer, showing Christian Wolff (Affleck) back in action as the autistic accountant who works to uncook the books. In this new film, he is recruited to help solve a murder case by a treasury agent (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). In order to get to the bottom of the matter, the emotionally distant Christian must reconnect with his brother, Brax (Bernthal), after the events of the first film.
The first film brought in $155 million worldwide for Warner Bros on a budget of $44 million. But despite the mid-budget success of the first film, Vanity Fair reported that “The Accountant 2” was stuck in development for eight years, the process of which director Gavin O’Connor described as “brutal.

Ben Affleck's 2016 action thriller "The Accountant" has enjoyed a fair bit of a success as of late. In the spring of 2024, it became Netflix's number one movie as viewers tuned in to enjoy the Gavin O'Connor-directed film's star-studded cast and wonderfully silly action. The movie stars Affleck as Christian Wolff, a seemingly unassuming man who's on the autism spectrum. He works as an accountant for various criminal organizations and also happens to be a highly proficient combat expert, which comes in handy when he has to deal with a massive embezzlement situation. This kicks off a complex spider's web of a plot that features characters played by folks like J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Anna Kendrick, Jean Smart, and John Lithgow.

Christian Wolff, Ben Affleck’s character from the 2016 action thriller The Accountant, will be making his long-awaited return to the big screen this year – and his comeback is going to be a violent one. The Motion Picture Association ratings board recently revealed that they’ve given The Accountant 2 an R rating for strong violence, and language throughout. That happens to be the same rating the first movie received, for the exact same reasons. Coming our way from Amazon MGM Studios, the film is scheduled to be released on April 25 – and with that date just a couple of months away, a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can watch it in the embed above.
If you need a refresher, Wikipedia reminds us that Christian Wolff was “a certified public accountant with autism who makes his living (un-)’cooking the books’ of criminal and terrorist organizations around the world that are experiencing internal embezzlement.

It’s tax season, and this year that means means two things: creepy H&r Block-mascot commercials and Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant 2.” That H&r Block mascot head, by the way, is a sniper’s dream, not that Christian Wolff needs much assistance with a rifle and scope.

Hype for the Ben Affleck-led sequel, The Accountant 2, is heating up, and director Gavin O’Connor is already talking about The Accountant 3. O’Connor doesn’t want to get too ahead of himself, but he’s got a “go big or go home” attitude about the criminally underrated action franchise. Speaking with Vanity Fair, O’Connor said he’s always wanted The Accountant to become a trilogy and has some ideas to make that happen.

Deadline reports that Ben Affleck is set to direct Animals, a new thriller for Netflix. He will not only helm the film. but also star in it. The report adds that Gillian Anderson will appear as well, which is just wonderful in my book.
We don’t know much about the plot of Animals at this time, except that it will revolve around a kidnapping. Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray wrote the script for the film, which will be shot in Los Angeles. Affleck will also produce alongside Matt Damon and Dani Bernfeld for Artists Equity and Brad Weston and Collin Creighton for Makeready.
Originally, Animals was set to star Damon in the leading role with Affleck just directing, but some issues with the rights forced the project to be put on hold. Affleck moved on to The Accountant 2, and by the time Animals was ready to move forward again,...
