The South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (SXSW) has announced the Audience Award winners, and Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant 2 has taken home the award for the Headliners section.

The 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival kicked off Friday, March 7 in Austin with world and North American premieres of movies in 11 sections, TV shows in three sections and several short film and virtual reality programs.

This year’s festival launched with opening-night film Another Simple Favor reteaming Paul Feig, Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, with other notable world premiere titles including Chad Hartigan’s The Threesome, Kate Mara‘s two entries The Astronaut and The Dutchman (the latter also starring André Holland), the Ben Affleck-Jon Bernthal sequel The Accountant 2, the Nicole Kidman-starring Holland and Death of a Unicorn starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega.

Ben Affleck is back in the spotlight and soon on cinema screens, thanks to the South by Southwest premiere of the keenly awaited sequel The Accountant 2, set to grace theaters via Amazon MGM Studios.

Off-screen, the multihyphenate filmmaker resurfaces amid a plethora of self-contradictory rumors surrounding his romance with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, fresh off his split from Jennifer Lopez, a juncture keeping tabloids busy. On-screen, Affleck’s career shifts with this follow-up to the beloved 2016 actioner. While it has a large set of devotees, the original Accountant didn’t exactly meet expectations, something the sequel seems to have circumvented.

Co-starring Jon Bernthal, The Accountant 2’s first screenings have incited quite a stir among general audiences, especially for a film featuring Affleck as a lead. On Rotten Tomatoes, it sits at a certified “fresh” 86%, with 22 critics having taken a swing at it.

Ben Affleck and Bff Matt Damon step out on the red carpet for the premiere of their new movie The Accountant 2 held during 2025 SXSW Film Festival on Saturday (March 8) at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Tex.

The longtime friends are both producers on the upcoming sequel, while Ben also reprises his role as Christian Wolff.

Also in attendance at the world premiere were Ben‘s co-stars Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, Grant Harvey, Presley Alexander, Vincent Juskalian and Avery Taylor, and director Gavin O’Connor.

While on stage at the event after the screening, Ben talked about his line dancing and jokingly compared it to Tom Cruise doing his own stunts in movies.

Bill Dubuque’s screenplay is a trope-regurgitating mess — unremarkable, jump-around nonsense — but somehow stumbles into an entertaining brand of B-grade action silliness. The tone evolves from deadly serious to deadly kinda-sorta serious, alleviating a few of the original’s pain points. Don’t expect anything groundbreaking, just an entertaining take on neurodivergent mercenaries and brotherly love.

Ben Affleck punches, kicks and shoots his way out of an array of dangerous situations over the two-hour-plus runtime of The Accountant 2, but at the Saturday night SXSW premiere of the movie Affleck revealed the film’s most difficult stunt: Choreography.

“For me, the challenge, of course, was the months and months I spent training to line dance,” jokes Affleck from the stage of Austin’s Paramount theater. Affleck was referencing a mid-film scene where his accountant/killer Christian Wolff adroitly line dances in a Los Angeles dive bar after picking up the dance moves in second (as established in the first film, Wolff has acute savant syndrome). “Tom Cruise has nothing on me,” Affleck added. “Just in terms of line dancing!”

Let me say right up top that I quite like 2016's "The Accountant." It might have been a here-today, gone-tomorrow action flick for a fair number of viewers, but I have an odd, personal connection to it because it was the very last movie I saw in theaters before leaving my home state of Arizona for a new life in Austin, Texas. I say all of this to make a point that I care about the original movie more than the average enjoyer of action cinema. So, believe me when I tell you that the long-awaited "The Accountant 2" delivers the goods.

Director Gavin O'Connor has reunited with Ben Affleck, who once again headlines the sequel as the mysterious Christian Wolff, an autistic man who happens to also be an assassin with a code. O'Connor and Affleck, despite first tackling the concept nearly a decade ago, didn't skip a beat with this reunion.

In 1984, “The Terminator” became one of the pop-culture touchstones of its decade, though it’s almost hard to remember that when Arnold Schwarzenegger was first tapped to portray that glowering cybernetic killer, the casting was a knowing joke, one that played off Arnold’s borderline kitsch lunkishness as an actor.

Ben Affleck is a far better actor than Schwarzenegger, but nine years ago, when Affleck was cast as the title character in “The Accountant,” the role carried some of that same frisson of meta japery. Affleck, as winning as he can be, has often had a blockish, overly square, slightly inexpressive quality. And it’s precisely that aspect of his personality that makes him so perfect as Christian Wolff, an autistic savant who works as an accountant for mobsters and terrorists, using his surreal numbers acumen to clean up their fraudulent books. He is also, not so incidentally, an efficient action bruiser.

“The challenge for me was the months and months I spent training to line dance,” said Ben Affleck at the SXSW premiere Saturday of The Accountant 2 – “that was my stunt. Tom Cruise has nothing on me, just in terms of line dancing.”

Gavin O’Connor returned to direct the sequel to his original 2016 film, which starred Affleck, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. Bill Dubuque wrote the original and the follow-up. Cast members, all of whom returned for the sequel, took the stage Saturday for a Q&a at the Paramount Theater in Austin.

It took years to get the second film completed. “Timing is everything,” O’Connor said. “We just pressed forward” and found a good fit with Affleck and Matt Damon’s company, Artists Equity, and a partner in Amazon MGM Studios.

Although sequels rarely surpass the original, Gavin O’Connor’s long-gestating The Accountant 2 is a pleasant surprise.

Nearly a decade after The Accountant (2016), Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is brought out of hiding after his former federal contact Raymond King (J.K. Simmons) is killed while on a case. King’s successor Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) enlists his expertise in putting together the puzzle, for which Christian reconnects with his long-lost hitman brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal).

While I admit I wouldn’t call myself the target audience, the original fell flat for me. I actually found myself questioning why a sequel was necessary, but fortunately, the follow-up stands perfectly on its own while delving further into the dynamics that felt halfheartedly introduced the first time around.

Stranger Things‘ Jamie Campbell Bower and Franklin‘s Eddie Marsan are entering the fantasy world created by J.R.R. Tolkien for season three of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Prime Video did not confirm who either actor will be playing, but did say Bower joined as a series regular. Marsan joins in a recurring role.

The series premiered in September 2022, with season two following in August 2024. Season three is currently in pre-production. Filming’s expected to begin at Shepperton Studios in the UK this spring.

Jon Bernthal will be returning as The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again, but Marvel Studios may already have bigger plans for the character. While speaking with ComicBook.com (in an interview which has since been deleted), Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum said, “[Bernthal] is working on a special presentation with us about that character.“

Rumours last month suggested that Marvel was developing a new Punisher TV series; perhaps this is that project.

So far, Marvel has only released two Special Presentations on Disney+: Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Both were released in 2022, and while it was assumed that these would be regular features alongside the movies and TV series, that’s all we’ve got. To be fair, Marvel has been cutting back on their projects in recent years in an attempt to get the franchise back on track with proven winners.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return for a third season. Prime Video has confirmed the series’ renewal; season three production is underway.

Rumors of a third season were first discussed in December 2022. Those behind the series say they have a five-year plan for the fantasy series. Season two premiered in August 2024.

Prime Video’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power has officially been renewed for a third season. The upcoming season will see a leap forward in time, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Season three is currently in pre-production, with filming expected to begin this spring at its new home, Shepperton Studios.

Prime Video’s renewal announcement did not indicate returning cast members or include a description of the upcoming season. The Accountant 2 trailer has arrived.

Gavin O’Connor returned to direct the sequel to his original 2016 film, which starred Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Cynthia Addai-Robinson among others like John Lithgow and Jean Smart. Bill Dubuque also returned to pen the followup as he did the script for The Accountant.

Simmons, Addai-Robinson and Bernthal will reprise their roles of Ray King, Marybeth Medina and Brax, respectively alongside Affleck’s return as Christian Wolff.

The film will hit theaters April 25, 2025, following Addai-Robinson’s Agent Medina as she has no choice but to reach out to Affleck’s Wolff to solve the mysterious murder of her former boss by unknown assassins. Bernthal’s estranged and highly lethal brother Brax will also get in on the action.

Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, Robert Morgan and Grant Harvey round out the ensemble cast of the pic.

Ben Affleck is back to his extremely particular ways in the action-packed first trailer for “The Accountant 2.” The sequel finds Affleck reprising the role of an autistic numbers whiz, this time teaming up with his brother (played by Jon Bernthal) to investigate the murder of his friend — J.K. Simmons returning for a brief stint.

The same filmmaking team that made the 2016 film a hit is back for the sequel: Gavin O’Connor directs from a screenplay by Bill Dubuque, although Anna Kendrick is nowhere to be seen in this first trailer. In this new film, he is recruited to help solve a murder case by a treasury agent (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). In order to get to the bottom of the matter, the emotionally distant Christian must reconnect with his brother, Brax (Bernthal), after the events of the first film.

The first film brought in $155 million worldwide for Warner Bros on a budget of $44 million.
