Film Review: Homeward Bound (2024) by Kim Dae-hwan
Bong Joon Ho
Kim Dae-hwan made a remarkable debut in 2014 with “End of Winter,” which not only received the New Currents Award at the 19th Busan International Film Festival but also earned praise from then-jury president Bong Joon-ho. This early recognition helped launch his career, eventually allowing him to work alongside the Oscar-winning director and contribute to the screenplay of “Parasite.” Now, Kim returns with his third feature film, “Homeward Bound,” which had its premiere on May 1st in the Korean Cinema section at the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival.

The story follows Jung-ha (Jang Young-nam), a teacher and painter, who lives peacefully in Chuncheon while secretly dating her girlfriend Ji-seon (Ok Ji-young). One day, Jung-ha’s son, Jin-woo (Ryu Kyung-soo), returns home from Canada, unexpectedly with his new girlfriend Jenny (Stephanie Lee), whom he quickly announces as his fiancée and very soon-to-be wife. Shortly afterward, Jenny’s parents, who are supposed to be in Canada,...

4PM (2024)
4Pm (2024) Movie Ending Explained: Why Does the Doctor Always Show Up at 4 Pm?
4PM (2024)
Jay Song’s “4Pm” affirms my belief that South Korean filmmakers can make films with any setting or scope, no matter how big or small. Jay’s film, written by Kim Hae-gon, is a good example. It takes place mainly in between two isolated houses in a small town and revolves around two middle-aged couples who become neighbors by happenstance. Somehow, Kim and Jay build these four characters with depth and pathos and create a largely convincing revenge thriller arc for everyone. While doing so, it also becomes a contemplation on the matters of life and death. If you’re wondering about the fate of Jeong-in and Yook-nam, find the ending explained here.

Spoilers Ahead

4Pm (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“4Pm” is a Korean-language mystery thriller about a married couple who move to an idyllic house only to get their life disrupted by a neighbor who doesn’t understand the importance of social boundaries.

The Wildest Plot Twists In K-Drama History
Image
With their tight storytelling and beautiful, engaging main casts, K-dramas (or South Korean scripted television series) are steadily finding success worldwide. Many of the greatest K-dramas of all time are immaculately paced, especially with plot twists to catch audiences off-guard and on the hook for more. These range from sudden tragic developments just as a happy ending comes into focus to betrayals that leave our protagonists reeling in the lurch. Often coming at the heels of long-standing misdirection, a good plot twist is both shocking and makes perfectly logical sense to the story when revealed.

Some plot twists are given, especially when it comes to crime thrillers and murder mysteries trying to keep its audience guessing on identifying the culprits. But some K-dramas deliver their show-stopping turns out of nowhere, dramatically raising the narrative stakes and making the story all the more unpredictable. Those moments are precisely why we love shows like these,...

Brussels 2024 Interview: 4Pm Stars Oh Dal-su, Jang Young-nam and Director Jay Song Discuss New Korean Thriller
Image
Last week, the 42nd Brussels International Film Festival played host to the world premiere of The Nightmare director Jay Song’s new South Korean thriller, 4Pm. Inspired by the Belgian novel “Les Catilinaires”, from celebrated author Amélie Nothomb, which was published in English as The Stranger Next Door, Brussels was a fitting venue to debut this new interpretation. ScreenAnarchy sat down with actors Oh Dal-su, Jang Young-nam, Kim Hong-pa and Gong Jae-kyung, as well as the film's director, Jay Song, the morning after the film's premiere. Renowned character actor Oh Dal-su lands a rare lead role as Jung-in, a philosophy professor who moves to the countryside on sabbatical with his wife Hyun-suk (Jang Young-nam). After settling into their new bucolic digs, the couple approach the...

‘Hansel & Gretel’ – The Korean Adaptation of the Classic Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale
Image
Hansel and Gretel, the two German kids who nearly became somebody’s meal, need little introduction. The characters in this Brothers Grimm classic have been used as a lesson about stranger danger and resilience for years. And while Hansel and Gretel’s ordeal has been put on screen multiple times — both faithfully and loosely — Yim Pil-sung’s 2007 movie is one of the more distinct adaptations. This Korean reimagining retains the essence of the influential fairy tale while also adding its own unique twists.

Hansel and Gretel was one of several movies from the golden age of South Korean Horror — often referred to as “K-Horror” in the West — to be based on fairy or folk tales. While Arang and A Tale of Two Sisters dug into local Korean lore, other movies drew from European narrations. However, much like Cinderella and The Red Shoes, Hansel and Gretel’s interpretation of its basis is rather liberal.

‘Badland Hunters’ Netflix Review: Are The Killer Crocs Worth Your Time?
Image
For some reason, the sequel to Concrete Utopia is a Netflix original and was released on the platform before most of the globe had a chance to watch the first part. I suppose Badland Hunters isn’t really a sequel so much as a film that exists in the same universe as Concrete Utopia. The film stars Ma Dong-Seok (Don Lee) in his first Netflix original in the leading role of a huntsman in the dystopian ruins of South Korea after a devastating earthquake. Badland Hunters is the story of his search for a little girl, who is under his protection but gets taken away under the pretense of her being offered clean water and protection. In this lawless badland, though, there are many enemies, so will our huntsman be able to save the girl? Or will he end up losing to the dark side? Before we get into the nitty-gritty details of the film,...

Is It's Okay To Not Be Okay Season 2 Happening? Everything We Know About The K-Drama
Image
Following the show's debut on Netflix in the summer of 2020, details about It's Okay to Not Be Okay season 2 have been slow to arrive. The K-drama series tells the story of two orphaned brothers, Moon Gang-Tae and Moon Sang-Tae, who develop a connection with children's book author Ko Moon-Young. The three characters learn to heal and grow through their relationships, and It's Okay to Not Be Okay incorporates mental health into the storyline. Screenwriter Jo Yong told Naver that she based the show on her experiences dating a man with a personality disorder (translated by Annyeong Oppa). Her compassion and care are reflected in the script.

Season 1 of It's Okay to Not Be Okay was praiseworthy for its representation of individuals with mental illnesses and neurodivergence. The show topped the list of the most influential TV dramas for five weeks according to Nielsen Media Research, a metric determined by social...

‘Cobweb’ Review: Song Kang-ho Stars in Kim Jee-woon’s Frantic, Flimsy Moviemaking Meta-Farce
Image
Director Kim Ki-yeol (Song Kang-ho) only needs two more days of reshoots to craft a new ending to his latest film, and it will no longer be the trashy potboiler everyone thought he was making. It will be, he declares frequently “A masterpiece!” Director Kim Jee-woon does not seem to harbor similar aspirations for his meta-movie “Cobweb” – his loosest, least substantial and most slapdash film in quite some time – though safe to say that the gulf between it and masterpiece status is a little wider than a two-day reshoot could possibly bridge. A film containing another film; a filmmaker referring to the trials of a filmmaker: it’s a movie of many layers, all of them garish and goofy, none of them great.

That’s an assessment that would no doubt cut Ki-yeol to the quick, because, as played with typically raffish charm by “Parasite”‘s Song Kang-ho, he certainly dreams of greatness,...

‘Project Wolf Hunting’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Seo In-Guk, Dong-Yoon Jang, Choi Gwi-hwa, Dong-il Sung, Park Ho-San, Moon-Sung Jung, Jung So-Min, Jang Young-Nam | Written and Directed by Hongsun Kim

Project Wolf Hunting begins with a mass return of Korean criminals captured in the Philippines. As they’re being led through Seoul airport somebody with a grudge against one of them detonates a suicide bomb killing himself, his target, and everyone else in the vicinity. To avoid a repeat of this, the next group is to be transported on the Frontier Titan, a specially fitted out cargo ship and delivered to a pier in Busan harbour to which the public doesn’t have access. I guess simply flying them into a military base never crossed anyone’s mind.

The Frontier Titan leaves Manilla with forty-seven criminals, twenty guards, two medics, and the ship’s crew. At least that’s what they think they’re leaving with because...

‘Crash Course in Romance’ (2023) Netflix Series
Image
Crash Course in Romance is a South Korean series directed by Yoo Je-won. A funny series that comes to us from South Korea, starring Jeon Do-Yeon and Jung Kyung-ho.

Crash Course in Romance is a series that manages to combine romantic comedy with a more classic and physical comedy based in ingenious dialogue. Briefly, more comedy and crazy situations than in a normal romantic comedy.

Crash Course in Romance (2023)

As happens in Love To Hate You, Crash Course in Romance is a series that, if you like this kind of humor that borders the absurd, will entertain you.

A curious comedy that is also about capitalism and an ironic gaze that is quite entertaining. We loved it and have found it to be very funny, a great and fun way to spend this week just

before Valentine´s Day.

A happy, zestful series that is very amenable and that you...

Film Review: Harmony (2010) by Kang Dae-gyu
Image
Films that have women’s prison as their main theme tend to linger towards exploitation; in this case, however, Kang Dae-gyu implements a rather different approach, that includes elements of musical and family drama, all of which though, are presented through a filter made of comedy and a general lightness that evidently focuses mostly on entertainment. The result was quite successful, since the movie was the 5th highest-grossing in the country for 2010.

The story revolves around Hong Jeong-hye, who is serving 10 years in prison after killing her abusive husband. However, she was pregnant at the time of the crime, and now, 18 months later, she finds herself raising her child in prison, with the help of a number of sympathetic prisoners, and a kind-hearted jailer named Na-yeong. As the time that she has to give the baby for adoption is up, she experiences much stress, and for reasons...
