Denny Nolan Joins the Cast of The Apex Predators Club
Image
Actor Denny Nolan has officially joined the cast of The Apex Predators Club, the upcoming horror-thriller written and directed by J. Horton. Nolan will portray Mikey, a powerful U.S. senator with a complicated past, caught in a deadly game far beyond politics.

The Apex Predators Club is set deep in the remote wilderness, where the ultra-rich gather to hunt monsters for sport. But when the hunt goes sideways and the creatures fight back, the hunters quickly become the hunted. With savage beasts closing in and no way out, survival is the only rule.

The film is slated to begin shooting this September in Shreveport, Louisiana, and features a large ensemble cast of killers, creatures, and everything in between.

The Apex Predators Club: One Last Ride with the Mahal Empire
Image
Indiegogo Campaign Launches June 6 to Complete Final Film from Late Producer Michael Mahal.

Los Angeles, CA — The Mahal Empire’s final chapter begins June 6 with the launch of a production finishing funds campaign on Indiegogo for The Apex Predators Club—a high-concept horror-thriller and the last film spearheaded by beloved indie producer Michael Mahal before his unexpected passing.

Known for his relentless drive and passion for independent cinema, Michael often said he had “never left a movie unfinished.” That legacy continues now, as his brother and producing partner Sonny Mahal, cinematographer Michael Su, and director/co-writer J. Horton move forward to bring The Apex Predators Club to the screen.

The production, originally slated to shoot in July, has been rescheduled for September 2025 to allow the team time to raise the remaining funds and finish the film at the level of quality Michael insisted on.

This will be the final Mahal Empire production,...

‘A Hard Place’ Trailer – Monsters vs. Creatures vs. Felissa Rose
Image
The distinction between monster and creature is rather nebulous, with the terms “monster movie” and “creature feature” often used interchangeably.

In the case of A Hard Place, however, monsters that roam the day and creatures that rule the night are separate entities, and they’re both out to kill genre favorites like Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp).

The indie horror-thriller will be released on VOD on May 27.

After a botched job leaves a trail of bodies behind, a gang of desperate criminals seeks refuge in a remote desert hideout. But their plans fall apart fast when they discover the area is home to something far worse than the law — an ancient war between monstrous predators of day and night. As tensions rise and the body count climbs, the crew must decide if survival is worth trusting each other or the creatures hunting them.

The Rise of Traveling Road Tours: Indie Filmmakers Find New Audiences with a Time-Tested Exhibition Model
Image
The hot new path to indie film distribution may not run through New York or Los Angeles.

Indie filmmakers are taking their films on the road. Often, they target specific regions like the American Midwest or South. These traveling tours may feature live components — a Q&a, a concert, or a performance. Controlling your content sounds very 21st-century, but it’s literally one of the oldest tricks in the book.

Vaudeville-like tours have been a part of the film industry since the 1920s, when a project’s physical filmstock would travel from city to city in order to screen for a limited number of weeks. Movies were paired with overtures and intermissions rather than short subjects or promotional trailers. Some of these elements persisted through the 1960s, but the road shows of today are not an exercise in nostalgia or in corporate strategy; they’re a roadmap to success.

Things that go bump in the night will be honored at the first ParaPod Awards, set for Saturday, April 1 as part of the ParaPod Festival in Santa Clarita, Calif.

The awards honor the influencers and content creators who work in the paranormal genre.

“As a content producer and host myself, being able to create a platform to celebrate the paranormal genre and those content creators who are working in it has been a long-time goal,” says ParaPod founder Tony Sweet. “Influencers, podcasters, documentary filmmakers, television producers, and hosts who dare to cover topics like UFOs or Bigfoot often get overlooked by mainstream awards shows, and I want to change that.”

Podcasters whose content covered the paranormal were asked to submit their work in various categories via the ParaPod Festival website. A committee of listeners rated the podcasts in their selected categories to create a list of finalists. The finalist podcasts...

BBC Insiders Say Strike Action Is “Inevitable” As Staff React Angrily To Content Cuts
Image
Exclusive: BBC insiders are saying it is inevitable that UK staff will stage their first major walkout in more than a decade as they protest over content cuts.

Employees at the broadcaster are furious at proposals to scale back local television and radio programming across the country and believe it is only a matter of time before they will have a mandate for strike action.

Should staff down tools, they will join a long list of workers launching industrial action around the UK, in what has been dubbed as a new “winter of discontent” following similar mass walkouts in 1979.

BBC employees completed a consultative strike ballot last week over the corporation’s plan to make nearly 50 roles redundant across its local services. Radio content is being cut, while the BBC has axed We Are England, a regional documentary TV show.

Members of the National Union of Journalists indicated that they would overwhelmingly support strike action.

The Campus will Leave You Speechless: A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director Jason Horton. This film critic and Jason Horton have worked together on this project, including though online marketing. Tagline: "The Devil Will Take Your Soul...One Piece at a Time." Director/writer: J. Horton. Cast: Rachel Amanda Bryant, Brit Sheridan, Scott Menville and Robert C. Pullman. The Campus is the latest film from director Jason Horton (Monsters in the Woods, 2012). This time, Horton makes a deal with the Devil, in this small budget horror title. Morgan played, by Rachel Amanda Bryant, is central to the film as she delivers most of the film's sparse dialogue. Meanwhile, Satan (Kevin Caliber) is stealing Morgan's soul, one step at a time. There are less than fifty lines here. So, viewers will have to pay attention, to uncover story details. As well, Horton diversifies the film's plot quite a bit, with at...

J. Horton in Edges of Darkness (2008)
'The Campus': Film Review
J. Horton in Edges of Darkness (2008)
J. Horton's indie horror film has arrived in theaters with unfortunate timing. Although inspired by the classic Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day, The Campus also bears a strong resemblance to the recent horror hit Happy Death Day. Both films depict the plight of a young woman who suffers under the curse of being murdered and then repeatedly coming back to life and being murdered yet again. Thus, there's no avoiding the déjà vu feeling induced by The Campus even if it's far more giddily gonzo in its style and execution.

After a prologue set in a South American desert...

Afm 2013: New Teaser Trailer and Poster for Hitchhiker Massacre
Afm 2013 came to a close yesterday, but we still have a few tales to tell from the huge event... such as the latest on Hitchhiker Massacre, which debuted a new trailer and poster art at the show, both of which we have right here!

Retrofocus Pictures' slasher horror film Hitchhiker Massacre is directed by James L. Bills (Refuge of Last Resort) and produced by J. Horton (Monsters in the Woods, Edges of Darkness). Retrofocus is the brainchild of executive producer Ivan Nagy, who created the HBO series "The Hitchhiker" and directed Skinner.

The film stars Ely Lamay, Calista Carradine, John Barrymore, James Bartholet, Veronica Lavery, and Katherine Cronyn.

"Hitchhiker Massacre is a love letter to the slasher flicks I loved as a kid: Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Toolbox Murders, The Slumber Party Massacre. Gone is the self-referential, jokey comedy that infected so much horror post-Scream. I just wanted to make an honest,...

Review: Monsters in the Woods
Monsters in the Woods is a micro-budget film about a micro-budget film. When prompted to add more sex and violence to his film, Jayson and his crew go out to the hills to shoot some additional footage. While there, they encounter malady and some weird giant bug type monsters.

I should have known what I was in for when I saw that one of the supporting actors from Showgirls received top billing in Monsters in the Woods. Nonetheless, I tried to keep an open mind.

The acting is really bad. None of the cast delivers believable or likeable performances. As the film progresses and the characters begin to turn on one another, the acting just gets worse. The direction is awful. Director, Jason Horton fails to get an inspired performance out of any member of his cast. The dialogue is terrible (“We were supposed to shoot your shit first. That means first.

Indie Horror Month Interview: Jason Horton Talks Monsters in the Woods and More
In writer/director Jason Horton's latest genre flick Monsters in the Woods, we follow a low-budget film crew that treks deep into the wilderness in order to shoot some cliché horror scenes for their unsellable indie-drama.

However, they soon find themselves in the midst of their own horror show as they are hunted by real monsters who chase down and devour the cast and crew one by one.

Since the film was recently released by Osiris Entertainment on DVD, Dread Central caught up with Horton to hear more on how his own real-life frustrations as a director inspired Monsters in the Woods, managing a huge ensemble story on a smaller budget and what's next for the up-and-coming independent filmmaker.

Check out our interview with Horton below, and make sure to check back here every day this March for more of Dread Central's Indie Horror Month coverage.

Encapsulated Cinema: Monsters in the Woods, 2-Headed Shark Attack, and 8213 Gacy House
Monsters in the Woods (2012)In the market for a creature feature of an entirely different variety? Step into writer/director Jason Horton’s faux documentary “Monsters in the Woods”, a film that takes yet another stab at lampooning the ridiculously evil movie industry. Glenn Plummer (“South Central”) stars as Jayson, an ill-tempered director who is being forced by his producer to shoot some raunchy additional footage for his otherwise tasteful and artistically sound genre-related endeavor. And just when you’ve had enough of the film’s movie-related satire, an earthquake unleashes a legion of blood-thirsty monsters upon the unsuspecting cast and crew. Thankfully, carnage ensues. As long as you’re willing to sit through about 30 minutes of expletive-laden rants and premature ejaculations, Jason Horton’s thoroughly enjoyable tale of Hollywood dissension and otherworldly monsters is smart, well-written, and delivers plenty of monster-related mayhem. In other words, “Monsters in the Woods...

Séance and Keeping Your Chin Up: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by director Nathan Hill.

Director: Nathan Hill.

Writers: Nathan Hill and Simon Salamon.

Creating an indie horror or thriller film must be extremely challenging especially when you have no money to make the film. The Australia shot and set Séance is a film that is quite dreary in subject matter and quite slow in pacing. The film left this film fan with a bad taste in the mouth and this is an independent thriller that is more about following a depressed lonely man moping about than offering any horrifying thrills.

Based on a true story, Séance almost completely focuses on the protagonist Bill (Daniel Rankin) who has recently lost his fiancé through some sort of tragedy. For the first twenty minutes of the show, viewers will see Bill sulk about a seaside cabin as he tries to deal with the grief and her loss.

MoreHorror Chats with 'Monster In The Woods' Filmmaker Jason Horton
by Jason Lees, MoreHorror.com

Around here, we love it when people get lost in the woods and the only thing that turns up is their sandals. It's even better when the only thing to survive is their cameras.

Whether they run into a ghost, a witch, a family of cannibals, or even a Kardashian or two, it's always fun to see what survives.

Indie filmmaker Jason Horton took a few minutes to talk with us about his latest movie Monsters In The Woods (review) and what happens when a film crew goes up against more than just a deadline.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to talk with us. We know you’re busy with Monsters In The Woods hitting shelves on February 21st (and currently available on VOD), so we really appreciate whatever time you can spare for us.

No trouble at all. This stuff is a...
