I’m a huge fan of 2009′s Ninja, as my signed Blu-ray will atest, so it’s safe to say I was super-excited for the UK release of the sequel Ninja: Shadow of a Tear. Whereas the first film saw Scott Adkins titular hero Casey Bowman using his ninjutsu skills on the streets of New York, this film sees Casey return home from some late night shopping to find someone has brutally killed his wife Namiko (Mika Hijii) and their unborn child. Bereft, Casey has only one thing left to live for… revenge.

The only clues to Namiko’s killer are the barbed wire marks left around her neck. So, with the help of his trusted friend Nakabara...

Vithaya Pansringarm (Only God Forgives) co-stars in this action-thriller, arriving in theaters December 31.

Isaac Florentine’s Ninja II: Official Synopsis & Artwork Revealed!
An ancient hero returns with a vengeance! Looks like Ninja is more than ready to fight again, and we’re happy that we finally have something new about Isaac Florentine‘s upcoming Ninja 2! As you probably know, we’re talking about Florentine’s follow-up to 2009′s Ninja movie which starred Scott Adkins as an American martial artist named Casey Bowman who travels to New York City in order to protect an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Kōga ninja.

So, the most important thing at this moment is that Isaac Florentine will direct Ninja 2 from David N. White‘s script, and that British action actor Scott Adkins is back in the business as well as Mika Hijii who starred as Namiko Takeda.

Another great news is that Kane Kosugi aka the son of the legendary 80′s Ninja actor Sho Kosugi is officialy on board to play the movie villain,...

Fresh Art And Plot Details For Isaac Florentine's Ninja 2
Principal photography hasn't begun yet for Isaac Florentine's martial arts flick Ninja 2 but that hasn't stopped Nu Image/Millennium Films from whipping up a poster art.  While the artwork is nothing more than a rehash of material from the first installment, the tagline makes it pretty clear where the story is heading - the revenge-plot direction.  Scott Adkins reprise the role of the American ninja Casey Bowman, along with Mika Hijii as Namiko.  The antagonist roles include Kane Kosugi as Nakabara and Shun Sugata as Goro. Here's how the official synopsis describes it (spoiler alert):Fight everyone and trust no one: it's the code of survival practiced by martial-arts master Casey Bowman after his life of domestic bliss is shattered by a savage act of violence....

Isaac Florentine and Scott Adkins Reunite For Ninja 2
Director Isaac Florentine and British action actor Scott Adkins - the dynamic duo of American martial arts film - will once again collaborate on a project together.  No, its not the eagerly-awaited Undisputed 4 that action fans have been asking for but rather, its another Nu Image/Millennium Films production, Ninja 2. In the first installment, Adkins starred as Casey Bowman, the American Ninja who must protect the ancient armor of the last Koga Ninja in New York from a high-tech rogue Ninja.  Mika Hijii (Aliens vs. Ninja), the co-star playing Namiko will return in the sequel.  The good news for cult fans of this genre is that Kane Kosugi (Blood Heat, War, Coweb, Choy Lee Fut), the son of the legendary 80's Ninja actor Sho...

More cast members announced for “Akko’s Secret”
Yesterday, the supporting cast of Yasuhiro Kawamura’s Akko’s Secret was revealed to Japanese media via press release.

The film is a live-action adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka’s classic “Himitsu no Akko-chan” manga series (1962-1965) about a 10-year-old girl who receives a magical mirror which lets her transform into whatever she wishes. In this live-action version, Haruka Ayase stars as Akko-chan after using the mirror to transform herself into a 22-year-old woman.

It was previously known that Masaki Okada would play Naoto Hayase, an elite employee of a cosmetics company Akko-chan begins working for.

The newly-announced additions include Teruyuki Kagawa as the spirit of the magical mirror, Shosuke Tanihara and Kazue Fukiishi as fellow company employees, Muga Tsukaji as a security guard who befriends Akko-chan, and Ren Osugi as the company’s former president.

The Kunoichi: Ninja Girl (2011) Movie Review
Writer-director Seiji Chiba sure loves ninjas, following his low budget epics “Rogue Ninja” and “Aliens vs. Ninja” with the imaginatively titled “Ninja Girl” (aka “The Kunoichi: Ninja Girl”). Certainly, it’s hard to fault the man for his dedication to the genre, and the film again sees him offering up his own skewed and slightly oddball take on the form, possibly taking another step along the road to producing the ultimate modern ninja opus. Working for once without his regular heroine Mika Hijii, Chiba teams with 19 year old real life karate sensation and the star of cult hits “Karate Girl” and “High-Kick Girl”, Rina Takeda, along with Kotono (“Mutant Girls Squad”), Mitsuki Koga (“Evil Ninja”) and Masanori Mimoto (“Aliens vs. Ninja”). The film is the latest of Chiba’s works to arrive on region 2 DVD, arriving in October via Mvm. As usual, the film is set back in 16th Century Japan,...

Rogue Ninja (2009) Movie Review
“Rogue Ninja” (aka “Fugitive Ninja”) is an earlier outing from “Aliens vs. Ninja” director Seiji Chiba, originally unleashed back in 2009 and now finding its way to DVD. Unsurprisingly, the film offers up very much the same brand of wild, low budget Japanese ninja mayhem, packing in as much martial arts action as possible into its short running time. The film also shares its protagonist with Chiba’s later effort in the formidable shape of actress Mika Hijii, who is fast emerging as one of the top Japanese genre heroines, with support from Izumi Masayuki (“Kamen Rider”) and idol Tatsumi Natsuko. Set in 16th Century Japan, the film takes place against a background of civil war, with the Iga ninja being ruled over by warlord Nobunaga Oda with an iron fist, keeping them in check with harsh laws and handing out executions at will. Mika Hijii plays Ukagami, the toughest female warrior of her clan,...

DVD Review: Rogue Ninja
Rogue Ninja

Stars: Mika Hijii | Written and Directed by Seji Chiba

“The time is the 16th Century and the whole of Japan is wracked by civil war. The Iga ninja, fated to be demolished by Nobunaga Oda, the greatest warlord of the time, have put their people under severe and harsh restrictions, with the upper echelons of the ninja brotherhood ruling their charges with an iron fist. Even the slightest and most minor of infractions can result in a death sentence for members of the lesser ninja, even those few women who number amongst their ranks.

One such female ninja is Ukagami (Hijii), a stunning yet formidable warrior, who is sentenced to death by her evil ninja peers when she disobeys her elders and leaves the secret order to track down a kidnapped childhood friend. While on the run, she forges a savage and crimson path of bloodshed that will...

Rogue Ninja: DVD review
Director: Seiji Chiba. Review: Adam Wing. Seiji Chiba sure loves his ninja movies. The Kunoichi: Ninja Girl, Alien vs. Ninja, Evil Ninja - its safe to assume that he’s comfortable within the action genre. Fans on these shores are likely to be familiar with Alien vs. Ninja, an action spoof that was little more than a sixty-minute fight sequence. There was enough mutilation and mayhem to keep you from reaching for the remote control though, even if it lacked the invention of some of its siblings. Rogue Ninja lacks anything approaching comedy aliens, with Chiba instead choosing to take his latest foray incredibly seriously. It's the 16th Century, a period of civil war in Japan, and stuck right in the middle are the Iga ninja. Rather than stand firm against the Nobunaga Oda and the Koga ninja that have joined forces, the Iga turn on themselves, dispensing with...

DVD and Blu-Ray Releases: February 22nd - Psyched for 9 Birdemic Ninjas
While there aren't any horror releases by major studios this week, there is, however, one notable film that should make up for the drought we are having. It is a film that should be re-subtitled "Shock and Awe" as that was how our @Foywonder felt after viewing Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

Anyway, this avian midnight movie sensation is directed by James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore, Janae Caster, Colton Osborne, and Adam Sessa plus five seconds of stock footage of Tippi Hedren from a previous film.

This week also brings us Psych: 9 from Ghost House Underground. This film is directed by Andrew Shortell and produced by Gareth Jones; it stars Sara Foster, Cary Elwes, Michael Biehn, and Gabriel Man. Rounding out the list are a wacky concept that has warrior creatures battling it out for our amusement and a fusion ghost story.

New this Week: ‘Drive Angry,’ ‘Hall Pass’ and ‘Due Date (DVD)’
Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Drive Angry – Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner

Hall Pass – Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Christina Applegate

Shelter – Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jeffrey DeMunn (limited)

Movie of the Week

Hall Pass

The Stars: Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Christina Applegate

The Plot: A married man (Wilson) is granted the opportunity to have an affair by his wife.

The Buzz: I’m happy to see, after a four-year hiatus, the Farrelly Brothers are back (Dumb & Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal) — it’s also nice to see Owen Wilson back to his regular Hollywood hard-working self. I didn’t think the red-band trailer for Hall Pass was as funny as the green-band, but I am still holding out hope that the Farrelly’s and Mr. Wilson are as good a match-up in reality as they are on paper. The supporting cast looks solid, with Jason Sudeikis,...

Alien vs. Ninja (2010) Movie Review
Writer director Seiji Chiba gives fans of Asian exploitation cinema what they want with “Aliens vs. Ninja”, a film which pretty much delivers exactly as its title suggests, pitting monstrous extraterrestrials against ninjas back in feudal Japan. Having also been responsible for “Evil Ninja”, Chiba certainly knows his stuff, and the film has a fine pedigree, boasting action choreography by Yuji Shimomura (known for “Versus”, “Shinobi” and “Death Trance”) and Kensuke Sonomura (“The Machine Girl”, “Hard Revenge Milly: Bloody Battle”). Raising their swords against the ugly invaders are Masanori Mimoto, (“Evil Ninja”), Mika Hijii (also in recent Western martial arts outing “Ninja”), Shuuji Kashiwabara, (“The World Sinks Except Japan”), and Donpei Tsuchihira (“Memories of Matsuko”. Having whipped up a fair amount of fanboy furore on the festival circuit, including a highly successful screening at FrightFest in London, the film now arrives in a bare bones edition on region 2 DVD via Revolver Entertainment.

DVD Review: Alien vs. Ninja
Alien Vs. Ninja

Stars: Mika Hijii, Ben Hiura, Shûji Kashiwabara, Masanori Mimoto | Written and Directed by Seiji Chiba

Alien vs. Ninja is that latest low-budget straight to DVD production from those purveyors of Ott filth Sushi Typhoon. Packed with the type of action, gore and frankly ridiculous ideas we’ve come to expect from the company, the film tells the story of a group of ninjas who witness a blazing fireball roaring across the sky before crashing to earth in the distant forest. Rushing to the scene to investigate, they are caught completely off guard when they discover and are besieged by a pack of brutal and extremely ravenous extra-terrestrials and their slimy offspring – unwelcome visitors who most definitely have not come in peace. Quickly realising their swords, knives and throwing stars are ineffective against these intergalactic predators, the fearless ninja find themselves facing their greatest challenge ever in a mammoth fight for survival.

Grimmupnorth 2010 lineup announced!
Grimmupnorth 2010 is coming to Manchester for a second time this Halloween! Readers may remember last year’s coverage from the first Grimmfest last October ‘09. Well, we’re going back for more this year too. Festival director Simeon Halligan and his crew have spent all year finding some amazing new titles to screen at Manchester’s biggest horror film festival, including Evil: In The Time Of Heroes, which I missed at Eiff so am well up for seeing. There’s also the inventively named Canadian shocker, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, the Japanese genre mash-up Alien Vs Ninja, Thai thriller Slice, Zombie mock-u-mentary Reel Zombies and a horror doc featuring all kinds of industry insiders, The Splat Pack. There’s also a ton of activities and seminars for festival goers to participate in too. Personally I’m looking forward to the special screening for my favourite Argento film, Deep Red.

Film4 FrightFest 2010: Alien vs. Ninja Review
It’s always hard to review a film like Alien vs. Ninja (also known as AvN). Released by Nikkatsu as part of their Sushi Typhoon label and directed by Seiji Chiba, AvN is a high concept low brow genre film that pits Aliens against Ninjas (yes the plural is more appropriate). The film has aliens, the film has ninjas, they fight… It’s Alien vs. Ninja.

To be honest there really isn’t actually a lot more to the film than that and perhaps that’s okay, there doesn’t really need to be as long as it delivers on the premise in an entertaining and enjoyable way and luckily, it does that in spades.

The two heroic ninjas that are central to the group battling the aliens are Yamata (Masanori Mimoto) and Rin (Mika Hijii) who have something approaching chemistry but never really getting that close to it. Undoubtedly...

[Nyaff Review] Alien vs. Ninja
Alien vs. Ninja takes us on the journey of a young, fearless, and often over-ambitious warrior by the name of Yamata (Masanori Mimoto). Yamata was orphaned as a child and has always felt like an outsider in his own village. Nevertheless he has proven himself as the greatest ninja in all of Asia. During a brutal battle with neighboring ninjas Yamata and his companions Shuji Kashiwabara and Donpei Tsuchihira see a flying ball of fire fall from the sky. Upon the Masters request the three warriors seek out this source of the fireball, hoping to protect the village from whatever dangers lie ahead.

While searching for the fireball, they meet up with another group of ninjas. This group includes Rin (Mika Hijii), the only female ninja and Yamata’s romantic interest. As the groups discuss the fireball they are ambushed by a pack of ruthless, blood-thirsty aliens. Several ninja’s...

Ninja: Review
Director: Isaac Florentine. Review: Tim Irwin. It’s hard to believe that two movies with the word Ninja in the title came out in the same year, and were both made in the same country. Indeed, while Ninja Assassin [reviewed here] went over the top with CGI blood and absurd violence, Ninja feels a little more credible in terms of story and characters. Granted, its primary ninja looks more like a cyborg assassin or Batman than a martial arts expert, but don’t let that detract from the experience. Scott Adkins stars as Casey Bowman, an American who has grown up in a dojo his whole life. I wasn’t familiar with Adkins either, but a quick glance at his filmography turns up small parts in blockbusters like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Bourne Ultimatum, and the lesser-known Unleashed (starring Jet Li). Casey has spent his life studying martial arts, and as time...

When I was a kid there was nothing better than a Ninja. I watched anything and everything to do with the dark warriors, including those dubbed shows on the USA network. So a movie called Ninja has to be great right? Well, we’ll find out when the film comes out … until then here’s a slew of featurettes giving you more than enough throwing stars to keep you jonesin’ for more.

Extra Ninja Behind-the-Scenes Goodness from Scott Adkins’ Ninja
Some new images and a new, 6-minute behind-the-scenes look at the making of Scott Adkins’ “Ninja”, featuring cast interviews and additional footage not seen before. Plus, the girls express their appreciation of Scott Adkins’ hunkiness, while there are some new ninja action for the boys. Mind you, I’m not saying some of you boys can’t also appreciate Scott Adkins’ hunkiness. Ahem. Directed by Isaac Florentine, the film stars Scott Adkins as our ninja hero, Tsuyoshi Ihara as our ninja villain, Mika Hijii as our spry Japanese love interest, Todd Jensen as our befuddled New York cop. They are joined by Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, Miles Anderson, Valentin Ganev , Kenji Motomiya, and Nikolai Sotirov. Via Scott Adkins Fanz and the “Ninja” YouTube channel. This is apparently the first of 3 behind-the-scenes featurette. We’ll add them here as they’re added to the channel. Behind-the-Scenes: Part 1...

Five Ass-Whuppin’ Clips from Scott Adkins’ Ninja
Five incredibly cool behind-the-scenes clips from Isaac Florentine and Scott Adkins’ upcoming martial arts actioner “Ninja”. There are plenty of new footage in the clips, but there are also some nifty lessons about the history of the ninja. Is any of it true? Um, probably not, but not like you care. It’s got ninjas, girls, Scott Adkins, and kick-ass action. Any questions? A westerner named Casey, studying Ninjutsu in Japan, is asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja. Starring Scott Adkins, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mika Hijii, Todd Jensen, Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, Miles Anderson, Valentin Ganev, Kenji Motomiya, Nikolai Sotirov, and directed by Isaac Florentine. A Clip from Scott Adkins’ Ninja: Subway Fight
You know, it’s probably a damn shame that Scott Adkins’ “Ninja” won’t make it into theaters. It’s probably got better action choreography than 90% of the stuff Hollywood puts out there at the moment, if this kick-ass clip from Isaac Florentine’s movie is any indication. Sure, the plot isn’t going to win any awards, and I’m not gonna crow about the acting, either. But let’s face it, it’s a movie called “Ninja”. Whaddaya want, “Gone with the Wind”? It’s about the action. Ninja action, baby! Check out this subway fight clip from the movie. A westerner named Casey, studying Ninjutsu in Japan, is asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja. Starring Scott Adkins, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mika Hijii, Todd Jensen, Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon,...

Second Ninja Trailer Packs in the Action
Second trailer for Scott Adkins’ martial arts movie “Ninja” via the boys over at Scott Adkins Fanz. It’s a lot shorter than the first trailer, but that’s probably because they dispensed with the exposition in favor of balls-to-the-wall action scenes. Starring Scott Adkins, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mika Hijii, Todd Jensen, Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, Miles Anderson, Valentin Ganev, Kenji Motomiya, and Nikolai Sotirov. Isaac Florentine directs. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com/storage/xplayer/yo033.swf", "mplayer", "540", "330", "8", "#000000"); so.addParam("swliveconnect", "true"); so.addParam("allowscriptaccess", "always"); so.addParam("allowfullscreen", "true"); so.addVariable("pid", "byhw001"); so.addVariable("siteId", "243"); so.addVariable("videoId", "49423"); so.addVariable("file", "http://cms.springboard.gorillanation.com/xml_feeds_advanced/index/243/3/49423/"); so.addVariable("pageUrl", document.location); so.write("flashcontent_243_byhw001_single_49423"); } getVideo();...

Ninja Clip: Rooftop Fight Scene
You may not know who Scott Adkins is, but if you saw “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” you already saw him in action — he was Weapon XI, the character that used to be Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds), who took on Wolverine at the end of the movie. Adkins is the star of Isaac Florentine’s actioner “Ninja”, which will probably not make it into theaters, but should make for one hell of a rental if you’re an action fan. A clip from the movie has surfaced online, featuring Atkins fighting a ninja on the rooftop of a building. A westerner named Casey, studying Ninjutsu in Japan, is asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja. Starring Scott Adkins, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mika Hijii, Todd Jensen, Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, and Miles Anderson.

Trailer Debut: Scott Adkins’ Ninja
Director Isaac Florentine has been hit and miss for me over the years, but from the looks of this trailer for his latest, the Scott Adkins-starrer “Ninja”, he may have a hit on his hands. Thanks to reader Action Fan, we have the first trailer for “Ninja” below. You want ninjas? You got ninjas. You want Scott Adkins dishing out pain? You got Scott Adkins dishing out pain. You want ninjas with machine guns … er, what? What’s a ninja doing with a machine gun? Oh well, I’m sure there’s some context there. Hopefully. Maybe he just ran out of shurikens? The film stars Adkins as a westerner named Casey, who is studying Ninjutsu in Japan when he’s asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja.
