Director’s winning project is BFI-backed UK-Italy co-production Brides.

UK writer-director Nadia Fall has won the €10,000 Breaking Through The Lens Action Grant, an award for a filmmaker from a marginalised gender presented in partnership with Swiss watch and jewellry manufacturer Chopard.

Fall was chosen from five finalists, with the award presented at an event at the Chopard boutique in London this evening.

Breaking Through The Lens (Bttl), a US-based non-profit that advocates for a more equitable film industry, has named the five finalists for their Chopard x Bttl Action Grant, which gives feature film directors of marginalised genders the chance at winning €10,000 towards a project.

The finalists include Screen Star of Tomorrow 2023 Nadia Fall, who is seeking support for her feature debut, Brides. The UK-Italy co-production follows two teenage girls in search of freedom, friendship and meaning, run away from their troubled lives in an English seaside town in order to join Isis in Syria.

New members include filmmakers Lynne Ramsay, Haifaa al-Mansour, Fox Searchlight’s Kate Gardiner and Screen Scotland’s Isabel Davis.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) has revealed its 2019 intake of new members drawn from the film, TV and games industry.

Among the record 558 new members are filmmakers and writers Haifaa al-Mansour (Wadjda), Laszlo Nemes (Son Of Saul), Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here), Lee Unkrich (Coco) and former Screen Star of Tomorrow Rose Glass (Saint Maud).

The line-up for the 70th Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) has been unveiled this morning by artistic director Mark Adams.

This year’s Eiff (June 15-26) will comprise a total 161 features from 46 countries including: 22 world premieres, five international premieres, 17 European premieres and 85 UK premieres.

Highlights include the UK premiere of Disney-Pixar animation Finding Dory, in-person events that include Us indie filmmaker Kevin Smith and Sex & The City actress Kim Cattrall, and the opening and closing gala world premieres of the previously announced Tommy’s Honour and Whisky Galore!.

Old classics will be re-imagined with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra performing the score to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial live at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre and the world premiere of the newly-restored 4K version of Highlander, celebrating its 30th anniversary with star Clancy Brown in attendance.
