Faces of Death remake earns an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore
Image
A year ago, Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) went into production in Louisiana, with Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival, Jermaine Fowler of The Blackening, and singer Charli Xcx making up the cast. We haven’t heard a release date for this one yet, but it did just take a major step forward: it has gotten its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. They have announced that the Faces of Death remake has received an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language and drug use.

The first Faces of Death was about a pathologist exploring gruesome ways to die via footage purportedly culled from around the world. In reality, most of the death scenes were staged,...

Alien Legion: Warner Bros. acquires an adaptation of the sci-fi comic book series with Tim Miller directing
Image
Deadpool director Tim Miller is used to bringing strange characters to life on the silver screen. Still, this time, he’s wrangling an extensive cast for an adaptation of Alien Legion, a science-fiction comic book series created by Carl Potts, Alan Zelenetz, and Frank Cirocco. Warner Bros. recently acquired the rights to Alien Legion, which Potts refers to as The Foreign Legion in space or The Dirty Dozen meets Aliens.

Published under Marvel Comics‘ Epic Comics imprint in 1983, Alien Legion revolves around Torie Montroc, the young son of an interstellar businessman who, rather than pick up the corporate torch, enrolls as a grunt in the Alien Legion, aligning himself with some of the galaxy’s most despicable degenerates.

Don Murphy and Susan Montford will produce the project through Angry Films alongside Aaron Ryder, with Andrew Swett of Rpc executive producing. According to The Wrap, Alien Legion is a bucket list project for Miller,...

Warner Bros. Picks Up ‘Alien Legion’ With Tim Miller Attached to Direct
Image
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group has acquired “Alien Legion,” a science-fiction comic-book series created by Carl Potts, Alan Zelenetz, and Frank Cirocco, with “Deadpool” director Tim Miller attached to direct, TheWrap has learned.

The studio picked up the IP with an eye towards building their own blockbuster space opera franchise. “Alien Legion” is being billed as “The Foreign Legion in space” or “’The Dirty Dozen’ meet ‘Aliens,’” according to creator Carl Potts, a long time Marvel comics Editor in Chief and writer.

The comic was part of Marvel Comics’ Epic Comics imprint in 1983 and centers on Torie Montroc, the young son of a mega rich interstellar business man who, rather than join the family business, enrolls in the Alien Legion at the lowest rank, joining some of the most vile and degenerate beings in the galaxy.

Potts initially published the series under Marvel’s “Epic,” banner which was a creator-owned...

‘Deadpool’ Filmmaker Tim Miller, Warner Bros. Tackling Adaptation of Sci-Fi Comic ‘Alien Legion’
Image
Warner Bros. is building its own galaxy that is far, far away.

The studio has picked up the rights to Alien Legion, a star-spanning, sci-fi comic initially published by Marvel Comics, with the aim of building a homegrown space opera franchise.

Tim Miller, who directed the original Deadpool as well as Terminator: Dark Fate, is attached to direct.

Don Murphy and Susan Montford of Angry Films, the banner whose credits include Transformers and Real Steel, will produce along with Aaron Ryder.

Legion was co-created by Carl Potts, a former editor and writer at Marvel, and was introduced as part of the publisher’s creator-owned imprint, Epic Comics, in 1983. It became the line’s longest-running title, even outliving the imprint when it was moved to other publishers in the 21st century. Alan Zelenetz and Frank Cirocco are the other co-creators.

Described as “the French Foreign Legion in space,” the stories focused...

Barbie Ferreira, one of the breakouts from HBO’s Euphoria, and Stranger Things actor Dacre Montgomery are set to star in Faces of Death, a reimagining of the 1978 cult horror movie being made by Legendary.

Earlier today, we shared the news that Johan Renck, who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl, had walked away from the HBO Max series Dune: The Sisterhood, a show he was supposed to direct the first two episodes of, due to creative differences. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Renck has already lined up another project. Sci-Fi Classic Day Of The Triffids Is Getting A Series Adaptation From Chernobyl's Johan Renck And Prime Video

The cordyceps fungal infection of "The Last of Us" may be the hottest infestation on television, but lest we forget John Wyndham's groundbreaking novel "The Day of the Triffids," which featured a tall, mobile, carnivorous plant species hellbent on eating us all. If the title sounds familiar, it's likely due to the film of the same name by Steve Sekely and Freddie Francis, or it's from singing the line "and I really got hot when I saw Janette Scott fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills," in the song "Science Fiction (Double Feature)" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

Johan Renck, director of the critically acclaimed HBO limited series, "Chernobyl" has been announced by The Hollywood Reporter as the latest to tackle Wyndham's novel, with a new series adaptation for Prime Video. Amazon Studios snagged the rights to the novel, looking to adapt the story as a collection of miniseries.

‘The Day Of The Triffids’ TV Series In Works At Amazon With Johan Renck Directing & Angry Films Producing

According to sources, Johan Renick, Emmy winner for HBO’s Chernobyl, is attached to direct and executive produce. Don Murphy and Susan Montford executive produce for Angry Films.

With its post-apocalyptic setting and plot, Wyndham’s 1951 novel draws parallels to HBO’s breakout hit The Last Of Us. The story centers on Bill Masen, a biologist who specializes in triffids. Back in 2014, the movie Vampire Academy (watch it Here) was released to theatres, and not many people really seemed to care to see it, or to like the movie if they did see it. According to Rotten Tomatoes, only 16 of the film’s reviews were positive (our own Chris Bumbray gave it a 2/10 review), and according to Box Office Mojo it made just 15.6 million dollars worldwide. Years down the line, the Peacock streaming service attempted to bring Vampire Academy to screens in the form of a TV series… and now Deadline reports that the Vampire Academy show has been cancelled after just one season.

‘One Of Us Is Lying’ & ‘Vampire Academy’ Canceled At Peacock
Image
Exclusive: A pair of YA drama series are coming to an end at Peacock.

The NBCU streamer has cancelled One Of Us Is Lying and Vampire Academy.

One Of Us Is Lying ran for two seasons, while Vampire Academy, which comes from Julie Plec, has ended after one.

Deadline understands that execs at Peacock were happy with both shows creatively but they just didn’t find the requisite audience to justify further seasons.

One Of Us Is Lying, which is based on Karen M. McManus’ novel, launched in October 2021 and was the first Peacock pilot to go to series. It was renewed for a second season earlier this year that aired in October 2022.

Vampire Academy was handed a straight-to-series order in May 2021 and premiered in September 2022.

Both shows come from Universal Studio Group.

One Of Us Is Lying, from UCP, follows what happens when five high schoolers walk into detention...

‘The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ Set For Reboot From 20th Century Studios & Hulu
Image
20th Century Studios is developing a reboot of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for Hulu, Deadline can confirm.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a fantasy pic released by 20th Century Fox in 2003, based on the comic book series of the same name from writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill. Set in an alternate Victorian Age world, it followed a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters—including Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer—as they teamed up on a secret mission.

The League of Extraordinary Gentleman comics were first introduced in 1999. Stephen Norrington directed the original film adaptation, starring Sean Connery, which was reputed to be the reason he retired from acting—so miserable was his experience on set. James Dale Robinson wrote the script, with Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh rounding out the cast.

New Adaptation of ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ in the Works at 20th Century Studios
Sean Connery, Jason Flemyng, Tony Curran, Naseeruddin Shah, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, and Peta Wilson in La Ligue des gentlemen extraordinaires (2003)
A new adaptation of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” based on the Alan Moore graphic novels, is in the works at 20th Century Studios. The project is in early development at the studio, and intended to land on Hulu.

The film will be written by Justin Haythe, who wrote Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller “Red Sparrow.” Kevin O’Neill drew the series which ended after eight graphic novels in 2020. The hope for the new adaptation is to film the original books.

The new incarnation will be extremely faithful to the original graphic novel, which involves famous public domain characters like Allan Quatermain, Mina Harker from Dracula, The Invisible Man, Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fu Manchu, Captain Nemo and Professor Cavor teaming up to thwart a deadly attack on London from the air in Victorian times.

‘Real Steel’ Series in Early Development at Disney Plus
Image
A “Real Steel” series adaptation is in the early stages of development at Disney Plus, Variety has learned.

The potential series would be based on the 2011 film of the same name, which was itself based on the short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson.

The film took place in the not too distant future in which human boxers have been replaced by giant fighting robots. Hugh Jackman starred as a former boxer who, along with his estranged son, fixes up an old robot they find in a junkyard and turns it into a champion.

As the project is still in the very early stages, no writer is yet attached. That means it is not yet clear if the show would adhere to the events of the original film or take a different direction altogether with new characters.

Shawn Levy, who directed the “Real Steel” film, will executive produce the series via 21 Laps.
