Murder Has Two Faces Season 1 Review: Who Gets Remembered?
Image
The true-crime genre, a dominant and seemingly inexhaustible force in the streaming landscape, often finds comfort in repetition, cycling through the same infamous stories. Yet, in its new docuseries “Murder Has Two Faces,” ABC News Studios has weaponized that familiarity to create something deeply unsettling.

Hosted by veteran journalist Robin Roberts, whose presence lends a steady gravitas, the show operates on a deceptively simple premise. It takes a murder case that has been seared into the public consciousness through relentless media coverage and pairs it with a lesser-known case that is uncannily similar in its details, timeline, and geography.

Each episode presents a disturbing parallel. We see the disappearance of one pregnant woman in the San Francisco Bay Area mirrored by another just months apart; we watch as a high-profile killing in Washington D.C. political circles echoes a previous one that barely registered as a local news item. The series,...

Gone Girl Trivia: How A Real-Life Murder Case Eerily Mirrors Ben Affleck & Rosamund Pike’s Psychological Thriller
Image
Was Ben Affleck & Rosamund Pike’s Gone Girl Inspired By Real-Life Incidents? (Photo Credit –Facebook)

David Fincher’s Gone Girl is more than a thriller. It slides between fiction and reality so easily that many forget where the story ends and where life begins. Gillian Flynn’s novel, later sharpened into a cold, cinematic glare by the popular director, never claims to be based on one true story, but it feels like it could be.

A woman disappears, and a husband becomes the villain before proving he’s not, or maybe he still is. The story spins like that only to leave a bitter taste, not because of fantasy but because it resembles too many headlines.

How Gone Girl’s Marriage Story Turns Into A Crime Plot

In the movie, the Dunnes look like a polished, smiling couple made for magazine covers at first glance. Nick (Ben Affleck) and Amy...

What Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Rumored New Attorney Mark Geragos Has Said About His Legal Troubles
Image
As jury selection in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal sex trafficking and racketeering trial is set to begin in early May, his legal team is reportedly seeing a major addition in the form of L.A.-based attorney Mark Geragos, who has made a name for himself defending both beloved and deeply maligned celebrities and public figures over the past several decades.

Michael Jackson, Winona Ryder, Jodi Arias, Jussie Smollett, Scott Peterson and many more household names make up Geragos’ list of past clients as he went to trial to defend them against allegations of child molestation, shoplifting, murder in the first degree and filing false reports with police. His client list alone indicates that not every case has been a feather in the cap for the celebrity lawyer, but he is renowned for providing a rigorous defense and often pulling off surprising wins in California’s courthouses.

While he has...

Chris Lacivita, former Trump campaign manager, sues The Daily Beast for defamation
Image
Chris Lacivita. (Courtesy photo)

A former campaign manager for President Donald Trump has filed a federal lawsuit against The Daily Beast over its reporting that allegedly painted him as a greedy official who prioritized his personal benefit over the effectiveness of Trump’s position in the election.

The defamation case filed by Chris Lacivita focuses squarely on a claim that he was paid $22 million for his advocacy work on the Trump campaign while the campaign itself was in the middle of a financial crisis. The Daily Beast later amended its story to clarify that Lacivita was actually paid $19.2 million, not the $22 million first reported.

The amendment was made after Lacivita objected to the original report and provided campaign finance documents from the Federal Election Commission that showed how much the Trump campaign paid him for his work.

Mark Geragos, a prolific litigator whose past or current clients include convicted murderer...

Convicted murderer Scott Peterson received a harsh beating behind bars on March 9.

Following a pickleball match between Peterson, 51, and another inmate, Peterson was “beat up” after he violently hit a pickleball directly at the other prisoner. Despite the reported severity of the beating, Peterson was not injured enough to be taken to the hospital.

In 2004, Peterson was convicted of killing his 8-months-pregnant wife, Laci, on Christmas Eve, two years earlier. Initially “helping” detectives with the investigation, Peterson became a prime suspect when it was discovered that he was having an affair. It was four months later that authorities found the remains of Laci’s body in the San Francisco Bay and the unborn son’s body roughly a mile away. Peterson was arrested shortly after, 30 miles from the Mexican border, where police alleged he was prepared to flee.

How ‘The Hunting Party’ Even Spooked Its Own Star
Image
NBC’s new series The Hunting Party melds a lot of TV genres into one high-concept hour. A drama about intelligence officers tracking down serial killers who’ve escaped from a secret government prison, it straddles the line between procedural and serialized mystery over the course its 10-episode first season.

“We really connected when we first met over wanting to do a procedural that felt a bit different,” says creator and co-showrunner JJ Bailey, who met fellow showrunner Jake Coburn on a “creative blind date” set up by Universal Television. “We love big serialized mysteries, but we also wanted to do a big week-to-week cases.”

Starring Melissa Roxburgh as an FBI special agent who shares a personal history with many of these criminals, each episode of the first season finds her character track down a different killer — sometimes creeping out the actress in the process. And while the writers have...

Image

Kurtis Ming, the consumer affairs reporter and news anchor best known for his “Call Kurtis” consumer reports series, has departed Sacramento’s CBS station after more than two decades.

His departure was announced during the 4 p.m. news broadcast on Kovr (Channel 13), the CBS-owned station that served as Ming’s workplace for 22 years of his broadcast TV career.

No reason was given for his departure, with the station’s anchors only saying that Ming “has decided to take another road.” From the broadcast on Friday, it appeared Ming’s decision was his alone; his contract was set to expire in February, according to two people familiar with the matter. The Desk has reached out to Ming by e-mail for additional information.

Ben Affleck’s Batman Was Great, But His ‘Gone Girl’ Casting is Untouchable for a Real-Life Killer Resemblance: ‘It’s actually frightening’
Image
For all the shortcomings that the now-defunct Dceu sustained, one thing that Zack Snyder mostly got right was the casting, whether it be Henry Cavill’s Superman or Ben Affleck’s Batman. Interestingly, like most Batman actors, Affleck wasn’t initially seen as a good choice for the Caped Crusader, and even though his version of the character left a lot to be desired on the physical front, the actor nailed the role overall.

However, his stint as Bruce Wayne doesn’t come close to the actor’s casting in one of the most beloved crime thrillers of the last decade, as fans can’t get over his uncanny resemblance to the real-life inspiration for his character.

It Isn't a Joke: Batman Really Does Know Everything And DC Comics Is Finally Explaining Why That Is
Image
If anyone truly knows everything about everything in the DC Universe, it has to be Batman. He's not the smartest character under the DC Comics banner, but he's not far from number one. His World's Greatest Detective moniker is derived from the immense level of knowledge he holds as a crime-fighting genius - and it's all by design.

Gotham Adventures #56 by Scott Peterson, Tim Levins, Terry Beatty, Lee Loughridge, Albert T. De Guzman, and Harvey Richards gets to the root explanation as to why and how Batman knows everything. The answer is simple: the why is because he thinks he has to, while the how is by doing intense research to prepare for a scenario that he needs to know.

Upon further analyzing his reasoning and how it's affected his (and the Bat-Family's) adventures, it becomes evident why Batman is such a great detective.

Menendez Brothers Documentary Producers on What’s Next: “This Story Is Far From Over”
Image
The producing team behind Netflix’s new documentary on the Menendez brothers began working on their project four years ago. What began with a letter turned into a phone call from Lyle Menendez, which would kickstart both his and brother Erik’s eventual participation in The Menendez Brothers, which is now streaming.

In the lead up to the two-hour documentary’s Monday premiere, Ross Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans of Campfire Studios spoke with The Hollywood Reporter last week, where they weighed in on the recent developments in the case, following the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office reviewing new evidence, as well as the cultural movement pushing for the release of the brothers (also thanks to Netflix’s hit Monsters series) who were convicted of killing their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, and sentenced in 1996 to life in prison without parole.

Now that the documentary is out,...

‘The Menendez Brothers’ Trailer: Lyle and Erik Menendez Tell Their Side of the Story Amid Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monsters’
Image
Erik and Lyle Menendez are getting their own non-“Monsters” platform on Netflix.

Continuing a recent trend for true-crime series, Netflix will soon debut a documentary on the Menendez brothers to accompany their fictionalized Ryan Murphy series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which was released last week. The documentary, titled “The Menendez Brothers” and directed by Alejandro Hartmann, will be released on October 7.

Hartmann’s doc aims to offer “another perspective” on the infamous case. We got the trailer today — watch it below.

This one-two combination of a scripted series and then a documentary mirrors the strategy Peacock has employed with its “Dr. Death” seasons. NBCUniversal’s Peacock also recently released a series of Scott Peterson interviews from prison, which followed Netflix’s “American Murder: Laci Peterson.”

The first season of “Monsters,” centered on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, was a massive viewership success for Netflix. It is currently...

Was 'Gone Girl' Based on the Laci Peterson Case?
Image
American Murder: Laci Peterson is the latest true-crime documentary to take Netflix by storm since it first premiered on the streaming platform on August 13th. It tells the story of the life and death of then-27-year-old Laci Peterson in 2002, who was eight months pregnant when she disappeared. Her body was found several months later in the San Francisco Bay Area, and her husband Scott was convicted of first-degree and second-degree murder in 2004. The case has been the subject of a number of documentaries and true-crime podcasts in the past, and even a recent Peacock documentary Face to Face with Scott Peterson, which came out just a week after Netflix's and shared his side of the story. Nevertheless, what caught so many viewers' attention with American Murder: Laci Peterson was just how similar the case is to the fictional one at the center of Gillian Flynn's 2012 novel and David Fincher's 2014 film adaptation,...

Netflix Doc on Laci Peterson Part of Disturbing — and Intriguing — New Trend
Image
In the past few years, there have been multiple documentaries and docuseries revisiting high-profile cases long after the fact: Lorena Bobbitt (“Lorena”), the Menendez Brothers (“Menendez & Menudo: Boys Betrayed”), JonBenét Ramsey (“JonBenét Ramsey: What Really Happened?”), Casey Anthony (“Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies”), Jared Vogel (“Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster”), boy band creator Lou Perlman (“Dirty Pop”), Brian Peck (“Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”), Sherri Papini (“The Perfect Wife”), and Gypsy Rose Blanchard (“The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard”), just to name a few. And the trend isn’t limited to docs — Todd Haynes’s 2023 feature film “May December” offered a fascinating fictional version of the Mary Kay Letourneau story after 20-plus years.

The most recent entry in the cycle is the Laci Peterson story, which met its 20th anniversary of the trial this month with two docuseries, “American Murder: Laci Peterson...

Adding to its ever-growing repertoire of true-crime documentaries, Netflix has chosen to focus on one of California's most notorious convicted murderers. American Murder: Laci Peterson documents the story of Laci Peterson, who was murdered by her husband, Scott, while eight months pregnant with her first child. Since its release on August 14, 2024, the docuseries has taken the true-crime world by storm, claiming the second spot on Netflix's Global Top 10 list in the week spanning August 12, 2024, to August 18, 2024. In a chilling true story brought to life, the three-part docuseries offers comprehensive coverage, beginning from the days leading to Laci's disappearance and ending with Scott being convicted of the murder of his wife and unborn son.

Face to Face with Scott Peterson is the killer Pov documentary no one asked for
Image
Earlier this month, Netflix released American Murder: Laci Peterson. And this week, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, Peacock dropped the three-episode docuseries Face to Face with Scott Peterson. The new doc recounts the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, but from the Pov of the killer, her husband Scott Peterson. Needless to say, it’s the documentary no one asked for. And it is wildly unnecessary.

About 20 years ago, Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife, Laci Peterson, who was pregnant with their unborn son. After finding mountains of evidence against Scott, he was sentenced to death in 2004. The California Supreme Court overturned this sentence in 2020. Scott is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, Scott claims innocence even today, and continues fighting for hearings, retesting findings, and presenting new theories.

Face to Face with Scott Peterson features the first interview in decades from Scott.

A Convicted Killer Speaks Out For His Innocence in This Trending Peacock Series
Image
Since Scott Peterson was found guilty of the first degree murder of his wife, Laci Peterson, and second degree murder of their unborn son, Conner Peterson, the buzz surrounding the Modesto family has largely subsided. With the convicted killer behind bars, what else is there to be said? Well, as subscribers to Peacock and Netflix know, there have been some recent changes in the case that are thrusting it back into the limelight. Were not saying that, over the last two decades, the Petersons havent come back into conversation, but the timing of these two well-molded docuseries are certainly drawing plenty of attention to the tragic deaths of Peterson and her son. And, while American Murder: Laci Peterson is climbing to the top of Netflixs charts, Face to Face with Scott Peterson is doing the exact same thing over at Peacock.

Is Scott Peterson Innocent? Breaking Down the Recent Documentary Evidence
Image
Face to Face with Scott Peterson presents alternative theories on the Laci Peterson case in a three-part docuseries. The LA Innocence Project is exploring new evidence to try and overturn Scott Peterson's conviction. Despite strong beliefs in Scott's guilt, the case was built on circumstantial evidence, leaving room for doubt.

All the chatter has been reignited about the Laci and Scott Peterson case, the young pregnant woman who was murdered with her unborn son Conner back in 2002. With this year being the 20th anniversary of her husband Scotts conviction of first-degree murder, several true crime docuseries are re-examining aspects of the case.

While theres a lot of talk about Netflixs latest docuseries, American Murder: Laci Peterson, another docuseries was just released on Peacock about the much-publicized case. Titled Face to Face with Scott Peterson, the three-part series is the first to take a good, hard look at alternative theories...

After Face to Face with Scott Peterson, the Convicted Killer Doesn’t Stand a Chance in the Public Eye
Image
It’s been 22 years since all eyes of the nation were trained on Modesto, California, in the wake of Laci Peterson’s disappearance.

Lifetime and true crime networks have created an entire cottage industry about women being murdered, and the odds are always in favor that the husband or significant other did it.

That’s why, as the story surrounding Laci’s disappearance emerged, pointing a finger at her husband, Scott, we couldn’t get enough of it.

And he looked so damn guilty.

(Courtesy of Peacock)

My friend and I were actively discussing Face to Face with Scott Peterson when Variety dropped an article last night comparing Face to Face with American Murder: Laci Peterson, on Netflix.

We disagreed a bit about how it all went down, but we both knew that Scott was vilified in the public eye, and media coverage was rough. In the court of public opinion,...

Two Docs Bring Scott Peterson and the Murder of Laci Peterson Back Into the Spotlight. Which Is More Truthful?
Image
In 2004, 12 jurors — backed by a horde of blood-thirsty Americans, who had followed the case on television day and night — found Scott Peterson guilty of the murders of his wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Conner. Twenty years later, the convicted murderer is back before the court of public opinion with two new docuseries, with starkly opposing points of view, aimed at relitigating the case and swaying streaming audiences. But the projects have also arrived as new efforts are being made to overturn one of the most scrutinized convictions of the century.

On Aug. 14, Netflix dropped “American Murder: Laci Peterson,” which unpacks the true-crime story that electrified the nation in the early aughts when an eight-months-pregnant Laci went missing on Christmas Eve 2002. Over the next five months, Americans debated whether her husband, Scott, had anything to do with her disappearance, until the bodies of Laci and her baby (who had been...

Image
Quick Links What Officially Happened to Laci Peterson? Scott Peterson Quickly Became the Focus of the Investigation Scott Peterson's Affair With Amber Frey Has Been Viewed as a Likely Motive There Are More Theories Regarding Laci Peterson's Death

Any true crime fan will tell you that the murder of Laci Peterson in 2002 is probably one of the most infamous true crime stories that not only got local attention but also widespread national coverage that had people hooked on every moment. It started with Laci, who was eight months pregnant at the time, going missing on Christmas Eve, and it subsequently took a tragic turn when her remains were discovered in the San Francisco Bay months later.

As soon as Laci went missing, attention was focused on her husband, Scott Peterson, which led to law enforcement building a case against him. From the start, investigators were suspicious of him, and that...

Unrecognizable Scott Peterson Gives His Murder Theory In New Documentary
Image
The 2002 Laci Peterson murder case is back in the spotlight again thanks to the Netflix series American Murder: Laci Peterson. However, there is a second documentary that just popped up on a different streaming service, and it offers something brand new to the story. Scott Peterson is telling his side of the story, and he has a “theory” on who killed his wife.

Here is a look at the second documentary and what it offers fans of true crime.

Face To Face With Scott Peterson Hits Peacock

Face To Face With Scott Peterson offers a look at the other side of the Laci Peterson murder case. For the first time in 20 years, Scott is giving his thoughts on the case, and he has his theory of who killed his wife, as he still proclaims his innocence. However, Scott is almost unrecognizable in the interview, as he is gaunt and has lost weight over the years.

Laci Peterson Doc Reveals Mom Sharon Rocha’s First Impression of Scott Peterson
Image
It’s one of the most infamous true crime cases in history: On Christmas Eve in 2002, Laci Peterson was reported missing from her home in Modesto, California, while eight months pregnant with her first child. The story dominated the media for months, leading up to the discovery of their remains in the San Francisco Bay. Slowly but surely, law enforcement built a case against her husband, Scott Peterson, and prosecuted him for the brutal murders of Laci Peterson and their unborn son. In 2004, Scott Peterson was convicted on two counts of murder, though he pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence to this day.

Now, 20 years after Peterson’s conviction, director Skye Borgman’s three-part documentary series American Murder: Laci Peterson utilizes news clips, interrogation footage, and courtroom cameras to bring the dramatic disappearance, investigation, and trial into focus. The series features interviews with detectives, lawyers, and jurors involved in...

Scott Peterson still insists he’s innocent in new Peacock documentary
Image
Nowadays, there’s always a little something extra we get with what might be called the “trial of the century.” It’s not just the endless media presence, the internet conspiracies or the water cooler stance of innocent vs. guilty – it’s the documentary. When we think of some of these trials tied directly to murder, a few names probably pop up more often than others: Casey Anthony, Amanda Knox, etc. And these subjects usually have no problem sitting down to again tell their side of the story and get the latest word in, even years after the conviction. The latest is Scott Peterson, who you probably remember was found guilty of both first- and second-degree murder of his wife, Laci, who was eight months pregnant at the time of her death.

Twenty years after the conviction, Scott Peterson – and the death of Laci – is the subject of two documentaries:...

Welcome to Derry: Everything We Know So Far About the It Prequel Series
Image
If you loved the It movies as much as I did, then you’re probably as pumped as I am about the upcoming Welcome to Derry series, one of the most highly-anticipated new shows on the horizon — at least for horror fans.

Good scripted horror TV is sometimes hard to come by and when we do get a good show, they don’t usually last as long as we’d like them to.

There are horror television series that come to mind that have had long runs: Supernatural, The Walking Dead, and American Horror Story.

(Max / Screenshot)

But, over the years, they seem to lose the punch they had in their early seasons, becoming almost a mockery of themselves.

Sometimes short is sweet, but sometimes shows abruptly end before their time, such as the phenomenal Evil on Paramount+, disappointing their fans.

From everything we know so far about Welcome to Derry,...

Scott Peterson Claims Burglars Were Actually Behind the Murder of His Wife Laci
Image
Scott Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his wife Laci and their unborn child in 2004, maintained his innocence and put forth alternate theories regarding the death of his wife in the new docuseries Face to Face With Scott Peterson.

Directed by Sharon Anderson, the three-part series focuses on these alternate theories and features Scott’s first interview in over 20 years. The biggest question mark he, and others, raise surrounds a burglary that took place across the street from the Peterson home the morning Laci disappeared.

“There were a lot of people in that burglary,...

The Forgotten Few: Indie Games That Deserve a TV Adaptation
Image
Producers and directors alike rarely mention Indie games regarding a potential TV adaptation. It’s a shame. For all the hype Aaa games get, so many are busts while hidden gems circulate in the shadows of anonymity outside hardcore gaming circles.

To be fair, many Indies are nearly impossible to translate into TV shows, not without fundamentally stripping the game of everything it is and reassembling something entirely different.

Everyone knows how much gamers love that idea. Take “Unpacking,” for instance. It’s a game about just that — unpacking and decorating a home. Netflix’s Dream Home Makeover covers that quite well without an adaptation.

(Courtesy of Flying Oak Games/Screenshot)

Alas, in the midst of Fallout, Halo, The Witcher, and upcoming TV adaptations like God of War, Indies are relegated to the back shelf, at least for now.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few Indie...

Nine Most Controversial Movie Recasts — Some Hits, Some Misses
Image
Don’t you hate the awkward silence that happens when someone has been recast as your favorite movie character?

No explanation. No plot twist is given in which your character returns to save the day and thwarts the impostor.

Instead, you just have to deal with it and accept New Guy Here as the recast hero.

(Warner Bros./Screenshot)

Sometimes, the awkward silence is unbearable, and you hate the rest of the movie because of this terrible choice of recasting.

But sometimes, they get it right, and we’re all forced to begrudgingly agree that this new interpretation of our favorite character was brilliant.

Not all 11 performances were brilliant. However, when the recasting was first announced, each one divided moviegoers. Let’s consider each one and whether the recast was a Win or Fail.

9. Will Smith in Aladdin – Win (Walt Disney Pictures/Screenshot)

Scott Peterson Maintains Innocence in Peacock’s ‘Face to Face’ Docuseries on Laci Peterson’s Murder
Image
Peacock’s true-crime docuseries Face to Face With Scott Peterson has premiered with a focus on alternate theories around who and what could have caused the shocking 2002 murder of Laci Peterson.

The three-parter directed by Shareen Anderson sees Scott Peterson deniying killing his pregnant wife and their unborn child, aiming to undercut the initial Modesto police investigation and the prosecution’s case during his original 2003 trial. In 2004, Scott was convicted of the murders of Laci, who was eight months pregnant, and their unborn child, Conner. His death sentence was overturned in 2020 and reduced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. In 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project took over Scott’s case, and the nonprofit began investigating his case around the 20th anniversary of his conviction.

The Face to Face With Scott Peterson series, now streaming all episodes, focuses on alternate theories, namely turning its focus to burglars of a...

Face to Face with Scott Peterson docuseries isn't on Netflix (where to watch)
Image
American Murder: Laci Peterson premiered on Netflix on Aug. 14 and remains atop the daily top 10 most popular shows on the streamer, even after the release of Emily in Paris season 4 part 1. The case continues to captivate the world over 20 years after it reached national headlines in 2002, so much so that another documentary series will release just one week later.

Whereas as Netflix's American Murder: Laci Peterson took a "very Laci forward" approach to telling her story, the latest docuseries tracking the case takes a completely different approach. Face to Face with Scott Peterson features the first interview with the convicted murderer in about 21 years. Likewise, the series will take a closer look at the case and consider new developments, particularly those that explore whether Scott could have been innocent.

Here's the full synopsis via Peacock:

It was a case that captivated the country. At 8 months pregnant, Laci Peterson went missing on Christmas Eve,...

Scott Peterson Denies Affair Played Role in Wife Laci’s Death in ‘Face to Face’ Sneak Peek (Exclusive)
Image
In an exclusive sneak peek at Peacock’s three-part docuseries Face to Face With Scott Peterson, Peterson denies the speculation that he killed his pregnant wife Laci because he wasn’t ready for fatherhood.

Series director and co-executive producer Shareen Anderson has been investigating the infamous case for over a decade, exploring the possibility that Peterson might not be guilty. For the first time since 2003, Peterson is speaking on camera, sharing his side of the story and attempting to clear up misconceptions about what led to Laci’s death.

“They said that you killed Laci because you didn’t want to be married and you didn’t want to be a father,” the director tells Peterson during their on-camera chat from prison.

“That’s so offensive, so disgusting,” responds Peterson. “I certainly regret cheating on Laci, absolutely.” He pointed out that his adultery stemmed from being “childish, lacking self esteem,...
