The comic strip medium has long been a tool for ideation. Brilliant and beloved characters debut on newspaper pages in ridiculous, hilarious, and breathtaking adventures. The medium transcends genres, featuring science fiction, fantasy, comedy, drama, and satire without ever stumbling. Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, The Far Side, and other strips remain memorable and classic concepts.
That does not mean that these characters are always restricted to the comic strip medium, however. Many of these stories have been adapted into movies, TV shows, comic books, and novelizations. Some have even become some of the greatest TV shows of their eras.

Big Nate's creator, Lincoln Peirce, is thrilled to see the character brought to life in animation after resisting offers for a live-action adaptation. Mitch Watson, the developer of the animated series, was drawn to Big Nate's character and his relatable desire for acceptance through pranks and mischief. Ben Giroux, the voice actor for Nate, aimed to bring a grounded and likable quality to the character while capturing his mischievous and questioning nature.
Based on the comic strip and book series of the same name, Big Nate follows sixth-grader Nate Wright's misadventures. The rebellious Nate is joined by his close friends Teddy, Chad, Francis, and Dee Dee in his hilarious antics, which often pit him against his school's faculty. This includes Nate's nemesis, social studies teacher Mrs. Godfrey, Principal Nichols, and Mr. Galvin, the science teacher.
The original Big Nate comic strip and books were created by Lincoln Peirce.

Summer is officially in full swing, and you know what that means, right? Yup, more new content to stream. With the number of streaming services seemingly increasing every day, it can be difficult keeping track of what is released, where, and when. Luckily, the major streamers release an itemized list of their new content at the end of every month.
Paramount+ is gearing up for July with several anticipated new and returning series. These include animated titles for the whole family, tributes to a bygone era of music, and a new action series from the mind of Taylor Sheridan. June saw several successful releases for the streamer, including new seasons of iCarly, Queens of the Universe, Joe Pickett, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Of course, these new releases come at a time of mass content removal, where Paramount+ and other streamers are appearing to follow good ole' Wbd's example of purging low-rated original programming.

After splitting off from the Daytime Emmys, the first-ever Children’s & Family Emmys ceremony is here.
Taking place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, Dec. 10, the first night of the festivities focused on the creative arts, with trophies doled out for achievements in writing, directing, voice direction, cinematography, editing and more.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the establishment of the Children’s & Family Emmys in late 2021, nodding to recent growth in scope and reach among that programming, which NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp said could “stand on its own two feet.” Indeed, younger audiences aren’t strictly daytime cable viewers anymore — much of the innovation in children’s and family TV in recent years has happened in streaming. Case in point: Netflix was nominated for more awards than any other platform, beating even Disney+, Disney Channel and Disney Junior combined.

Surprising to some, Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have some commonalities. After all, the half-shell heroes were initially created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a parody of Frank Miller’s work on Daredevil, before coming to DC and turning his talents to The Dark Knight. Both properties work best in the shadows and had the producers of this animated adventure leaned into that, this could have been a cut above an obvious cash grab.
The participants have met before, in three miniseries from DC Comics and Idw in addition to one strictly set in their “Adventures” incarnations, aimed more at all-ages readers. Now, we have Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a briskly paced story. It’s not bad, but boy, it could have been so much more had anyone made an effort.

Something I’m enjoying seeing lately is animation catching up to the comic book realm when it comes to crossovers. In most instances, we’ve been forced to rely on the latter because it’s really been the only medium to get around red tape separating various franchises. But thanks to some of the top publishers out there, Batman has fought the Predator, Archie has had to survive a Sharknado, and the Ghostbusters will soon meet up with the Transformers.
Now, because of Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the acclaimed miniseries written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Freddie Williams II has been adapted to film. Actually, before either version came along, the only way for these pop culture icons to cross paths was in our imaginations – and maybe sometimes with the help of action figures. Odds are that my six-year-old self probably concocted such a mashup back in the day.
But if I’m to be completely honest here, there’s a big difference in how I favor each part in this equation. While my affinity for Batman is well-documented, my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fandom didn’t follow me into adulthood. Regardless, I really dug the aforementioned comic on which the flick we’re here to discuss is based, so I went into my viewing experience rather excited.
Oddly enough, I wound up walking away with a different sentiment toward DC’s latest home video release. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate what it accomplished and don’t think it’s a bad movie by any means – it’s just that this seems like an instance when something worked better on the printed page.
Believe me, even though these concepts have some overlap on the Venn diagram, Batman and Tmnt are very different from one another when you get down to it. In fact, the simple idea that they originate from different universes was thrown out the window in the movie, as the Turtles and their foes take a road trip of sorts to Gotham City.

Cowabunga dudes! Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a bodaciously fun and action-packed adventure. Loosely based on the 2015 crossover comic series by James Tynion IV, Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is stylistically different than previous DC films. It expertly uses slow motion to add sizzle to the awesome fight scenes. Coupled with a clever, often hilarious script, this installment ranks as one of the best. It is a must see for every comic genre and animation fan.
Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens in Gotham City. Batgirl (Rachel Bloom) defends a laboratory from a deadly ninja attack. She gets help from mysterious reptile men that disappear in a cloud of smoke. Batman (Rachel Bloom) is concerned about the pattern of scientific installations being robbed. He sets up a trap and is stunned by the skills of his blade-wearing, metal-helmeted adversary. Shredder (Andrew Kishino) is unlike anyone Batman has fought before.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released a new clip from DC’s upcoming animated film Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The clip happens to be the opening scene of the movie and it focuses on the Ninja Turtles as they descend on Gotham City. As you might imagine, Batman is not happy upon hearing about these “lizard men” from Batgirl.
This clip features the Foot Clan descending “upon Powers Industrial, where Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl (voiced by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's producer/star Rachel Bloom) is getting a first-hand look at an extremely powerful generator.”
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
It’ll take the unlikely unification of the Dark Knight and the Heroes in a Half-shell to overcome the combined villainous forces afoot in Gotham City in the all-new, feature-length animated thriller.

The first trailer for Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has arrived, along with the reveal of it’s stacked voice cast as well as the film’s eventual home video release. Based on the six part comic crossover of the same name, the recently confirmed animated film looks to be a pretty close adaptation of it’s source material. There’s some pretty awesome moments in the trailer, so hopefully the final film will live up to the promise that this first look provides.
The all-star cast of Batman vs. Tmnt is led by Troy Baker as the voice of both Batman and the Joker – making Baker the first actor to ever play both roles in the same film. Opposite Baker are the Ninja Turtles themselves – Emmy Award/Golden Globe Award/SAG Award winner Darren Criss as Raphael, Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live) as Michelangelo, Baron Vaughn (Grace and Frankie) as Donatello,...

Butch Hartman has a long and storied history of creating great cartoon shows. Not only is he responsible for The Fairly OddParents, the second longest-running Nicktoon on Nickelodeon, but he’s also created several other popular shows including Danny Phantom and T.U.F.F. Puppy. And now here he is once again with a unique new Nickelodeon show, Bunsen is a Beast.
Bunsen is a Beast is a cartoon about Bunsen (voiced by Jeremy Rowley), the first beast to be integrated into the Muckledunk Middle School, and his new human friend Mikey Munroe (Ben Giroux). It also features self-appointed school safety monitor and beast-hater Amanda Killman (Kari Wahlgren) and a collection of other oddball characters such as Ms. Flap (Cheri Oteri) and Darcy, who circle the main pair during their adventures.
But what is a Beast, per se? Well, in Hartman’s creation, even within the Beast world there appears to be great variety,...

A couple weeks ago, we shined our spotlight on the upcoming 'FMyLife' web series, the result of a collaboration between the Fml team and the duo of Ben Giroux and Ray Chase, who run the Awkward Universe comedy channel. The first episode has now been released on the newly minted FMLVideoGuys YouTube channel. As Giroux previously mentioned, each episode will feature a combination of five short FMLs that share a common theme. The first theme is "proposals", with Giroux, Chase, and several other actors re-enacting their favorite FMLs on the subject. The fastidious nature of Giroux and Chase's selection process is clear; the five FMLs run the gamut from male proposal FMLs to prom proposal FMLs to female-reception-of-proposal FMLs. The question, at least for me, is whether the new Fml web series is a better format than the one Giroux and Chase have produced independently of Fml.

F My Life was one of the great Internet sensations of 2009, a funny, sad, cringe-worthy collection of fails, poor choices, and plain old bad luck. Four years later, the blog's traffic has waned, but that's not stopping Ben Giroux and Ray Chase of Awkward Universe from reminding us of the myriad fails that occur each day. The creative pair, in partnership with Fml, are producing a series of videos showcasing embarrassing moments from the Fml archives. Giroux and Chase will produce at least four videos, each one showcasing multiple one-liners. "We decided to select five Fml's, group them together by a single theme, and rapid-fire them in a single minute-long episode," explained Giroux. "The best Fml's feel like a personal story being recounted by a good friend -- it's embarrassingly intimate. We realized the best way to convey these pathetic stories was to eliminate production dialogue and replace it with morose,...

Those who managed to catch new SyFy b-movie horror flick 'Jersey Shore Shark Attack' over the weekend will be pleased (or saddened) to discover that it'll be arriving on Blu-ray and DVD across the Us from 28 August courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The kids from the 'Shore' certainly get more than they bargained for when their local beach is overrun with bull sharks hungry to feed on the flesh of over tanned simpletons. Jeremy Luc, Melissa Molinaro, Jack Scalia, Paul Sorvino, William Atherton, Tony Sirico, Joey Russo, Daniel Booko, Alex Mauriello, Audi Resendez, Grant Harvey, Dylan Vox, Joey Fatone and Ben Giroux all star and so don't forget if you missed out on its recent TV airing then make sure you catch it on Blu-ray/DVD later this Summer....

It's incredible to think that Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws', even 36 years on, still manages to influence so many terrible sounding shark attack flicks. Amongst the absolute brimming swarm of shark-infested features that have swam onto TV and DVD lately comes word of 'Jersey Shore Shark Attack'. The John Shepphird helmed project penned by foursome Michael Ciminera, Richard Gnolfo, Jeffrey Schenck and Peter Sullivan moves the deadly ocean-dwelling predators to Jersey Shore and features a bunch of characters clearly spoofing the cast of the American reality show of the same name. Jeremy Luc, Melissa Molinaro, Jack Scalia, Paul Sorvino, William Atherton, Tony Sirico, Joey Russo, Daniel Booko, Alex Mauriello, Audi Resendez, Grant Harvey, Dylan Vox, Joey Fatone and Ben Giroux all star. Premiering this week exclusively on Dailymotion is Ben and Burman, a new web series from actor/producer Ben Giroux (Bones, Psych) and his longtime frenemy and Second City’s Scott Burman. The story highlights the pair’s height deficiencies and their Odd Couple cohabitation, which, I’m told, kinda sorta emulates their real life friendship. “We became known as best friends who also hated each other,” said Giroux. “I'm a neat-freak who appreciates order and hygiene. Burman is a slob who appreciates chaos at all times. Together, people started referring to us as a modern-day Odd Couple. Striking up a unique friendship and creating a style of comedy Giroux describes as “if The Three Stooges had sex with South Park,” Giroux and Burman produced the twelve episode series. Then they teamed up with Gary Randall’s Grand Productions (Saving Grace, The Glades). The partnership had definite benefits, as the duo...

Every young actor wants only to be a film or TV star, right?Well, that's not quite true. A sturdy crop of young actors recently graduated from college theater programs has been giving stellar performances in musical theater productions across the country.Take, for instance, Jessica Keenan Wynn, currently the sole female in "Life Could Be a Dream," a doo-wop musical set in 1960. Written and directed by Roger Bean ("The Marvelous Wonderettes"), the show is currently playing at Los Angeles' Hudson Mainstage Theatre."There's something about musical theater where everything is heightened through song," Wynn says. "I hate to say it, but if I could sing my emotions every day—without being thought of as clinically insane—I probably would." (Perhaps Wynn comes by her enthusiasm naturally. She's the granddaughter of actor Keenan Wynn, who appeared on Broadway in musical revues in the 1930s and 1940s, and the great-granddaughter of Ed Wynn,...
