New Harry Potter Actors Receive Backlash From Drag Race UK Star
Image
Harry Potterhas become a lightning rod for controversy ever since author J. K. Rowling took an anti-transgender stance on social media. As a result, some think that actors should boycott future projects set in the wizarding world she created.

In a post on X, Drag Race UK star Kate Butch expressed her disappointment with the actors who are set to star in Audible's Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions."I think if you were a guest judge on perhaps the least cis season of Drag Race UK, you shouldn’t be doing this," she wrote. "Incredibly disappointed at the rest of them and all."

Original 'Harry Potter' Star Emma Thompson Says the Franchise "Wasn't Important" To Her Career
Image
To fans, the original Harry Potter movies are some of the most magical films ever made. But, to one of the original stars, it was just another paying gig. The film franchise, which began in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, featured an all-star British cast, which included Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Richard Harris, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, and the list goes on and on and on. Among that A-list talent was another member of British acting royalty: Emma Thompson. While many of the cast have magical memories from their time filming the series, Thompson's are a little more down to Earth.

Emma Thompson was recently at the Locarno Film Festival (per Deadline), where she was the guest of honor. During her Q&a, she addressed everything from being asked out on a date by Donald Trump to filming the Harry Potter franchise.

Gemma Chan Starred In One Of The Best Canceled Sci-Fi Shows Of The 2010s
Image
Gemma Chan has an incredible resume overall, but she's especially made a name for herself with fantasy and science-fiction projects. If you've enjoyed what you've seen out of Chan so far, then you owe it to yourself to check out one of the best sci-fi series of the 2010s — "Humans."

"Humans" premiered on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom (and AMC stateside) in 2015. It's set in a world where artificial intelligence and robotics have become intertwined, raising a host of moral questions. Chan plays Anita, a synth purchased to help out around the Hawkins family household. Though she's designed to be helpful, the family's matriarch, Laura (Katherine Parkinson), is...

Harry Potter Set Video Reveals First Look At Dominic McLaughlin's Boy Wizard And Hagrid In London
Image
Work continues on HBO's Harry Potter TV series in London, England, and Dominic McLaughlin has just been spotted as the Boy Wizard alongside a giant-sized Hagrid.

However, despite what you might think at first glance, that isn't Shaun of the Dead star Nick Frost. Similar to the Harry Potter movies, it seems this series is utilising a suitably large stand-in who will don a realistic prosthetic head with the Hagrid actor's likeness.

As with the late Robbie Coltrane's portrayal, Frost's performance will then be merged with that. The result will be a Hagrid played by a well-known star who, at the same time, does right by the version of the half-giant and gamekeeper and groundskeeper at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by being suitably massive.

It looks like McLaughlin and "Frost" are shooting scenes in the Muggle world, where they take the tube before arriving at Diagon Alley.

'It's Not Good to Be So Furious': Harry Potter Star Weighs in on Jk Rowling's Trans Controversy
Image
Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in the original Harry Potter series and is well-known in her native Britain, has become the latest Potter-affiliated person to offer an opinion on Jk Rowling's anti-transgender comments.

Interest in the franchise has renewed now that HBO is making a new version of Harry Potter, this time for TV. Margolyes made her comments while appearing on the podcast A Gay Old Time, via The Independent. “I don't agree with her about the trans issue – I think her opinion is too harsh,” she said of Rowling. But at the same time, she “didn’t like the fact that the trans community has reacted with such fury” to her.

Trans people and their allies have indeed reacted with fury to Rowling's actions. After the author celebrated a Supreme Court ruling that stated trans women were not women, actor Pedro Pascal - who has a transgender...

Harry Potter Fans Breathe A Sigh Of Relief As First Set Photos Confirm A Welcomed Potential Spoiler
Image
The first photos set photos from HBO's Harry Potter reboot found their way online yesterday, but there's one crucial detail that has fans feeling a lot better about the upcoming small screen adaptation.

The Harry Potter books are set between 1991 and 1998, though the movies led by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint appear to have taken place at the same time they were filmed: the first decade of the 2000s. Much has been said about HBO's plans for the property, with the biggest concern being that the Wizarding World would either be Americanised or brought into the present day.

After all, how better to make a new take on Harry Potter resonate with today's kids than by making the Dursleys one of those annoying TikTok families or for Harry's fellow students to be obsessed with Instagram and influencers? It sounds awful, we know.

Fortunately, these set photos have confirmed...

'Harry Potter' TV Show Set Photos Reveal First Look at the Dursleys
Image
Production is currently underway on HBO's Harry Potterreboot, and the updates are coming in thick and fast, much like the letters that famously poured out of the chimney at Number Four, Privet Drive — the address at which Harry begrudgingly resided following the death of his parents. He was forced to live in the cupboard under the stairs, while his despicable Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and cousin Dudley stomped around him. Unfortunately for Harry, he will have to face them again in the upcoming TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books.

New photos from the set of the highly anticipated Harry Potter series have offered a glimpse at how the dastardly Dursleys will appear in the small-screen version of the story, following an extremely divisive first look at another fan-favorite character. An earlier announcement confirmed that Daniel Rigby and Bev Powley had been cast as Vernon and Petunia Dursley,...

Harry Potter TV Show Star Declines Comment on Jk Rowling “Debate”
Image
It's important to remember the ongoing controversial statements by the creator of the Harry Potter franchise. Cbr supports the hard work of industry professionals on properties fans know and love, and the wider world of Harry Potter that fans have adopted as their own. You can find Cbr's continuing coverage on Rowling here.

Production has begun on HBO's TV adaptation of Harry Potter, and with that has come a resurgence of questions about Potter creator Jk Rowling. Rowling is considered one of the leading anti-transgender figures in Britain, and has repeatedly drawn ire from trans activists and fellow celebrities.

The Radio Times asked Katherine Parkinson -- who will be playing Harry's mother figure Molly Weasley in the show -- where she stands on the controversy surrounding Rowling. Parkinson answered by not answering: "I don't want to add to that debate at all. I'm just delighted to be joining the magical world of Harry Potter.

Rumor: Harry Potter Episode Count, Minor Premiere Spoilers, And Voldemort Casting Plans Revealed
Image
Production on HBO's Harry Potter TV series started earlier this week, and following our first look at both the Boy Wizard and Hagrid, we have a better idea of what to expect from this small screen adaptation of controversial author J.K. Rowling's iconic series of novels.

We've known for a while that HBO intends to adapt a book per season, but with the show's young leads set to grow up fast and so much more ground to cover than the movies, the cable network has a unique plan to counter them being aged out.

According to Redanian Intelligence (via SFFGazette.com), seasons 1 and 2 are expected to be six episodes each, with future seasons potentially expanding to 8 episodes to help cover those extra pages. The books ranged from 223 to 766 pages.

The site explains that the first season will shoot from now until May 2026, with season 2 set to similarly film from...

Harry Potter TV Show Report Reveals Shorter Episode Count, Season 2 Filming Window
Image
Harry Potter may have just started production on its first season, but HBO is reportedly already looking ahead. A new report has offered insight into the network's plans for the show's second season, which would adapt The Chamber of Secrets.

According to Redanian Intelligence, HBO plans on filming the first two seasons of Harry Potter back-to-back, with Season 2 slated to begin production in July 2026, two months after Season 1's expected wrap date. Season 2 would then film on a similar production timeframe, wrapping in May 2027. The report also revealed that the episode counts for the first two seasons will be shorter than expected. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod previously indicated back in December 2024 that the first season would comprise eight episodes, when they mentioned having "eight hours to tell the first book." While that may still be the case, those eight hours will be divided into just six episodes,...

‘Harry Potter’ Series Star Katherine Parkinson Refuses to Respond to Jk Rowling Backlash
Image
Katherine Parkinson wants to stay out of the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling‘s involvement in HBO’s Harry Potter TV adaptation. The actress, who will play Molly Weasley in the upcoming series, was asked for her thoughts on Rowling’s anti-trans views in an interview with RadioTimes.com published on Wednesday, July 16. In response, she said, “I don’t want to add to that debate at all. I’m just delighted to be joining the magical world of Harry Potter.” Since the show’s announcement in 2023, many fans of the franchise have expressed their disappointment with Rowling’s role as an executive producer. The author has been wrapped in controversy over the past few years for her controversial comments about the transgender community, most recently celebrating the U.K. Supreme Court’s ruling that one’s biological sex legally defines womanhood. “I love it when a plan comes together,” she...

Harry Potter: HBO Reveals A First Look At Skeleton Crew Star Nick Frost As The Reboot's New Hagrid
Image
Following our first look at Dominic McLaughlin as the Boy Wizard, HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series has just shared a first look—via SFFGazette.com—at Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The late Robbie Coltrane played the character in the big screen franchise that ran from 2001 to 2011, and this interpretation doesn't seem all that different. Frost is roughly the same age as his predecessor was in that first movie—a little older, in fact—but looks a bit more youthful in the role.

So far, this adaptation of Harry Potter doesn't look all that different from the movies, aside from a change in actors. That might be off-putting for longtime fans, but is unlikely to bother the new, younger audience Warner Bros. Discovery hopes to introduce to this Wizarding World.

Hagrid is Hogwarts' gamekeeper and later became the Care of Magical Creatures Professor. He lives in a hut on...

Image
Nick Frost is the new Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. Fans got their first look at him in the famous half-giant’s robes, which were first worn by the late Robbie Coltrane in the original movies.

Filming on Season 1 of the series began on Monday at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. and is expected to last until the spring of 2026. Alongside McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton stars as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. With this news comes our first look at Dominic McLaughlin as the Boy Wizard himself, Harry Potter. The newcomer is wearing the character's trademark glasses and has that all-too familiar lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead. It's fair to say he looks like he's stepped straight off the page.

The new Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry robes are also featured, though we can't see the school's updated logo. Understandably, fans remain eager to learn how this small screen take will...

Image
What Do We Know About the upcoming HBO series reimagining the Harry Potter franchise? More than you may think. The new adaptation of the beloved J.K. Rowling book series is set to be a more expansive adaptation than the feature film series. From plot, casting news, and more, let’s dive in and take a look at what is coming up in the new take on the Harry Potter universe.

Why a series remake of Harry Potter so soon?

When the first Harry Potter novel debuted in 1997, it took just two years for David Heyman to land the rights to the first four books in the series. It then took two more years to transform the first book into the Chris Columbus feature film, which became a box office behemoth for the decade. But, as the books became longer and more epic, the movie needed to select which subplots and...

J.K. Rowling Clarifies Her Ongoing Role in the Harry Potter Franchise
Image
After months of speculation and industry chatter, J.K. Rowling has broken her silence — and it’s all good news for Potterheads.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the creator of the Harry Potter universe gave a glowing endorsement of HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of her world-famous book series.

The show, which promises to be a “faithful adaptation,” is set to begin filming in mid-2025. Rowling isn’t just rubber-stamping this one from afar — she confirmed she’s been working “closely with the extremely talented writers.”

“I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series and they are So, So, So Good!” she wrote, leaving no room for doubt about her excitement.

While she won’t have a screenwriting credit on the show (unlike her involvement in the Fantastic Beasts films), her creative presence is still being felt behind the scenes. Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner,...

Harry Potter TV Series Set Construction Seemingly Reveals First Glimpse At Hogwarts' Great Hall
Image
HBO's upcoming Harry Potter reboot still needs to fill a few key roles (who will play Voldemort?), and as the TV series gears up to begin shooting, construction on the show's massive practical sets continues.

We've seen Privet Drive and a bare bones version of Platform 9¾, and snaps of what look like Hogwarts' Great Hall have just found their way online (via SFFGazette.com). They don't show much, but all signs point to it being a suitably impressive take on a key location in the books...and movies.

Topping what we saw in the latter will be no easy feat, though that goes for every location that's being recreated in Harry Potter. The biggest test will be how this show's take on those differs from what we've already seen on screen over the years.

As you'd expect, there's a huge amount of construction currently taking place in the UK, and...

'Harry Potter' Reboot Star, 47, Admits He May Not Return for Season 2 of Max's New Series
Image
It looks like Harry Potter's Minister for Magic might not be running the wizarding world for long. Bertie Carvel, who’s stepping into the role of Cornelius Fudge for HBO’s Harry Potter reboot, has admitted he’s not certain he’ll stick around beyond Season 1 — and the decision, he says, may rest with the fans. In a new interview with The Times, the Doctor Foster and The Crownactor revealed that while he’s enjoyed diving into J.K. Rowling’s magical universe, his future on the show isn’t guaranteed. “I am coming at it with a really open mind,” he said. “Whether I come back [after the first series] probably depends on what the fans think. I mean, I’ll be furious if it’s not an amazing part.”

Carvel is taking over the character originally played by Robert Hardy, a performance still fondly remembered by many fans of the original film series.

'I'll Be Furious:' New Harry Potter Series May Lose One Star After Season 1
Image
The Harry Potter franchise is about to be rebooted as a TV series, with plans for release in late 2026. The upcoming HBO show has already cast several important characters who are expected to be around for a long time.

Warner Bros. revealed that they have a 10-year plan for Harry Potter, with each season adapting a book from J.K. Rowling's novel series of the same name. The studio surprised fans by casting some characters ahead of their first appearance in the show, including Lucius Malfoy, who first appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Prime Minister Cornelius Fudge, who also appears in the same book, although he is mentioned in Harry Potter and thePhilosopher's Stone. In an interview with The Times, Bertie Carvel, who will play Fudge, revealed that his time on the show will depend on fan reactions, and that he might leave after one season.

‘Harry Potter’ Star Jason Isaacs Slams Fan Backlash to HBO Show’s Snape Casting: ‘What They’re Being Is Racist’
Image
Former “Harry Potter” star Jason Isaacs did not hesitate this past weekend to call out the fans who have been “rude” to new Severus Snape actor Paapa Essiedu.

Isaacs addressed the issue during a panel at this year’s FanExPo Denver convention and specifically pushed back against “Potter” fans who have attacked Essiedu following his casting as Snape in the new HBO show. “Paapa Essiedu is one of the best actors I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve seen some people online who are being rude about him,” Isaacs said, according to Collider. “What they’re being is racist.”

While Essiedu is best known for his Emmy-nominated role in HBO’s “I May Destroy You,” he has stacked up impressive credits in recent years in TV shows and films like “Black Mirror,” “The Outrun,” “The Lazarus Project,” “Gangs of London” and “Black Doves.” He is now set to...

Rewatching Harry Potter Made It Clear The Malfoys Picked The Wrong Family To Mess With
Image
Rewatching the Harry Potter movies or re-reading the books is an eye-opening experience as a long-time fan. For even after all this time, there are details that most of us miss the first time around. One detail that surely stands out is that not only are the Malfoys not the most powerful family in the wizarding world, but they also picked the wrong family to mess with.

The Weasleys, who are painted as the warm, humble, and slightly chaotic family next door, aren’t just a lovable wizarding clan; they are a full-blown magical powerhouse. Shocking to hear that? Well, read on to know why this makes sense.

Why the Weasleys Are the Most Underrated Family in the Wizarding World? The Weasley family | Credits: Harry Potter movies / Warner Bros.

One would think that the Malfoys are the most powerful clan in the wizarding world. Not only are they pure-blood, insanely rich,...

Rewatching ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ on Prime Video Unlocked a Wild Voldemort Theory
Image
Rewatching Harry Potter is just as magical an experience as if you were watching it for the first time. Such is the magic of the franchise, based on the books by J.K. Rowling. But one thing really struck me, a wild, wild theory about our iconic antagonist, Ralph Fiennes’ Lord Voldemort.

While watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on Prime Video, one cannot help but think, what if Tom Riddle, ever the control-obsessed dark wizard, is bald because he deliberately wants to make it impossible for anyone to use his hair for Polyjuice Potion?

Voldemort Would Never Let Anyone Impersonate Him Ralph Fiennes as Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise | Credits: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Polyjuice Potion, as we know, allows anyone to assume another’s appearance with just a strand of hair or a piece of their body. In the books and movies, we have noticed...

J.K. Rowling Says She “Worked Closely” With Writers on HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series
Image
J.K. Rowling has given the Harry Potter series her stamp of approval.

The controversial author recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the show, which is set to be a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s mega-selling fantasy series. She also noted that she “worked closely with the extremely talented writers” on the series.

“I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are So, So, So Good!” she added.

It was previously revealed that Rowling would be an executive producer on the Harry Potter show, but wasn’t expected to have day-to-day involvement. While the author has faced criticism for her anti-transgender sentiments, HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys has said he’s “not worried about it” impacting the show and is “not concerned about consumer response.”

'So, So, So Good': J.K. Rowling Shares High Praise for the Upcoming Harry Potter Reboot
Image
The upcoming Harry Potter TV show is getting closer. After the announcement of a series of cast members for the upcoming HBO Max show, the series has just received feedback from author J.K. Rowling.

Although Rowling's views on the transgender community have caused her backlash in the last few years, the author will be involved in the new version of Harry Potter. After reacting to the casting of the new Golden Trio, the author had praise for the show as a whole. On June 22, the author wrote on X that she had read the first two episodes and shared her opinion on them.

'Harry Potter's Gary Oldman Has Bad News for Fans Hoping to See Original Cameos in the Reboot
Image
The Harry Potter franchise is currently going through some major changes, as HBO's reboot series continues expanding its cast. The most iconic characters from J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World have now been cast for the upcoming TV remake, including the titular Harry Potter himself. From the moment the series was announced back in 2023, fans have wondered which, if any, of the original cast from Warner Bros.' classic film franchise will return for the reboot. Many are hoping for at least one of the original stars to make a cameo in the reboot, and some of the actors are even open to the idea. But acting veteran and one of the few people to escape from Azkaban, Gary Oldman (Sirius Black in Harry Potter), has bad news for fans hoping for a cameo.

Gary Oldman recently sat down with Variety to test whether he knew the most famous lines from his incredible filmography.
